My first visit to Hillside Farmacy was underwhelming, but I'd give it another try. It's been on my list forever, because it's been said to have some of the best mac and cheese in town. My boyfriend surprised me with a date night here. It was surprisingly quiet on a Friday evening. He'd gotten reservations, but didn't need them. Naturally, I had to try the mac and cheese, even though I'm trying to eat fewer processed carbs. It was good, but not "cheat meal" good. The sauce was a little thin, although flavored well. Also, it's kind of an awkward dish, because it only is available as a big serving. About halfway through I decided it wasn't worth eating all at once, and ordered a side salad topped with chicken salad to get some protein and greens with my meal. While the chicken salad tasted fresh, it was quite plain and dry. The side salad was dressed in an overpowering dressing. I ended up not finishing the salad either. My boyfriend thought his burger was one of the best he's ever had, so he will probably want to return for it, and for the ambiance. I'll probably try the burger too. I wanted to order the crème brûlée, but didn't want to keep ordering food while he was already done eating so we just went home and had ice cream from my freezer. Next time I'll try that too. Strolled in on a Saturday morning and was able to get a table for two without a problem. The grits were some of the best I've had which I would simply come back for single handily. This is for their happy hour. A friend and I were in the mood for a mid-afternoon snack before dinner and decided to check out Hillside Farmacy. Unbeknowing to us, they have a 1/2 off happy hour on their snacks menu. We ordered the malt vinegar fries, crab cakes, and the farmacy plate. Everything was fresh, local, and delicious. The plate included jam and honey that paired well with their selection of cheeses. The restaurant is idyllic and charming with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Our experience at Hillside was really pleasant! The oysters were delicious and fresh, we should have ordered more and will definitely get them again in the future. We also got a cheese plate that isn't pictured, but it had lots of fun options to mix and match in each bite. Our entrees, the fish and steak were also pretty good. I wouldn't say they knocked our socks off, but they were certainly above average! If you're considering going here, I recommend it. Cozy, delicious and the staff were all great. We were looking forward to our brunch here as the place had a really different look and interesting background story. It was one of the saddest restaurant outings in some time. I cannot really comment on the food as after being seated for over 30 minutes (I had about 45 used on the parking meter near the restaurant) our waiter never brought our coffee or a clean replacement glass for the dirty one (lipstick on rim) that I received. I did reach out to the hostess, as I did not want to just walk away without saying anything. Food was fine, though nothing you couldn't find somewhere else in Austin for a lower price point at the same quality. The menu is 70% drinks (mostly alcoholic) with an exceptionally small selection of entrees and a few desserts. I ordered the Parfait and Buttermilk Pancakes w/ bacon and a farm egg. The farm egg and bacon portions were small, and while the buttermilk pancakes were delicious when smothered in butter, blueberry puree, and syrup, I didn't find them to be outstanding. My biggest gripe during my visit was the speed of service. We arrived at 1 and were seated by 130, though we didn't get any food on the table until 240. We drank a few drinks, but tables around us were being served food long after we had arrived, although still hardly at a speed which was compensated for by the actual quality of the food. The ambience outdoors was fine, though again nothing you can't find at other locations in Austin, including and especially on the East side where cozy greenspace is abundant for most businesses. They could probably support a live musician and bring a little more character to their outdoor space, which is already somewhat deprived by being at the intersection of 11th/Rosewood/Navasota (in essence, it can get pretty noisy and you're right on the street while eating). Generally, a fine experience, but would like to come back during dinner service to see whether my visit was a fluke or a microcosm of greater problems. I am also willing to provide some caveats, particularly that I visited during SXSW, which likely meant they were seeing a higher number of customers than usual. Maybe it was a bad day when we went on Sunday?? Idk. The only time she had any pleasant tone in Her voice or demeanor was when she was standing over me while i paid. Literally standing over me. They have little portable card readers they hold in front of your face while you pay and choose your gratuity. She wanted her tip but doesn't like her job i think?? However everyone else that works there was really nice! This is a cute, Austin centric restaurant on the east side of downtown. During my first visit we managed to snag a table on the patio. It was a warm Saturday morning and I was appreciative of their umbrellas and misting fans. We started brunch by ordering a pitcher, or shall I say beaker, of mimosas. Honestly, we stumbled across this after not being super impressed at paper boy...their menu was lacking so we walked down the street to hit up this spot and boy am I glad we did! We ordered the eggs in a bowl, fried egg sandwich, and the numby six sandwich (I think that's what it was called). Everything was incredible!! We also got the brûlée grapefruit for dessert and it might be one of the yummiest things I've ever eaten. They have housemade sodas, fun alcoholic punch served in darling punch cups, and an espresso bar. We also ordered the fries but they had a little sweetness to them which I didn't love. Cute hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The waiter recommended the kale salad with chicken or the mac and cheese. I tried both. The chicken salad had a finer consistency with less chicken "chunks"which I loved. The kale salad itself had a strong lemony flavor that neutralized the bitterness of the kale. I've been here several times in the past for lunch but recently had dinner with friends here and it was just not good all around. To start, the portions are absolutely ridiculous for how much you're paying. If you're thinking an $18 charcuterie plate is a good shareable for 4 people, think again. No wait, just a quick seat on the front patio. Lovely waiter took excellent care of us. Waters and coffee never ran dry. Food was fabulous. Very all-American brunch style bistro but pulled-off with a lovely flair. I had a standard break fast of eggs / meat / potatoes. The eggs were done perfectly. Quick way to win my love and my heart... cook my eggs right... we're friends for life. Price is on-point. I went here on a Friday after work with a couple of coworkers and really enjoyed my experience. I loved the old pharmacy aesthetic, it fits well into the Austin scene. They have a pretty good deal for happy hour 1/2 priced starters and drinks. The oysters were really fresh and great quality and came with a few different sauces that packed flavor. The bacon Mac and Cheese was SO GOOD, I don't eat much cheese but I did have a more than a couple bites from my coworker. We came to this restaurant because we received a gift card, and figured a Wednesday evening wouldn't be too packed. From the number of yelp reviews we didn't think it would literally be empty though! There was no one in the interior of the restaurant other than us, with maybe 1 (or 2 ?) tables taken on the patio. We were seated and put orders in for cocktails, and one was fabulous and on point and the other a bit funky, but still enjoyable. We always appreciate a location that's farm to table with fresh ingredients, but the menu was so small it was almost impossible to order. It consisted of 5 entrees: steak, chicken, shrimp, boar, and a burger with prices mostly in the mid $20s. The burger was the only item that could be made meat free with a black bean patty. They had a selection of 5 (maybe 6) sides and a few starters to choose from. With 3 pretty basic salads... think kale ceaser salads. We decided this wasn't the place for us pretty upfront, but needed to spend our giftcard so figured the cheese platter and a side of Brussels sprouts would be a good pre dinner snack. The Brussels sprouts were on point but the cheese platter consisted of literally 2 cheese types.... that's it. Cheddar and blue cheese. I'm a cheese person so I was thoroughly disappointed! The drinks saved the day. The atmosphere was ok. I'm not sure what everyone is raving about as for the aesthetics of the place. It came off pretty dingy/dirty to me, but it was empty after all. With maybe a good hustle and bustle on a Saturday mid day it might seem better- with a lot of natural light coming in. I came here with some friends on a weekday so it wasn't crowded. Parking seemed a bit difficult because there was construction going on and there didn't seem to be a parking lot. We parked on the street at the neighborhood next door. I love the look of the interior. The waitress was knowledgeable and recommended a few dishes. My friend who has been there before always gets the egg sandwich, which is apparently their best seller. I ended up going for the eggs in a bowl which wasn't bad but felt like something I could make myself. Next time I'll probably opt for the amazing sandwich. Hillside Farmacy seems to be like a hidden gem because we came here for weekend brunch and there was no wait! Ordered the Big Brekkie, but subbed the bacon for avocado. The dish was definitely tasty and airs more on the side of simplicity. The only downside was that I didn't feel completely full afterwards strangely even though the portion size compared to price ($11) isn't bad. I did really enjoy their Wasabi Bloody Mary which is topped with carrot, celery, and other fun items. For anyone who is turned off by the wasabi idea, it wasn't too spicy in my opinion and the portion size is pretty large! The interior and exterior are definitely an Instagrammer's dream and I really love all the tiny, pharmaceutical details. The restaurant is on the smaller side but we never felt crowded or tight. No complaints about the service at the bar and table. Street parking is you're best bet, but I didn't have any trouble. Overall, I would be interested in coming back to Hillside Farmacy. read more

Delicious farm to table restaurant. I started with the Oktoberfest beer. The Farmacy Plate was a perfect combination of sweet and savory and was quickly gobbled up. I followed up with the chicken dinner and crispy Brussel sprouts. The chicken was delicious with the barley and couscous filling in for the quarter portion of chicken. Well, my iced coffee came pretty quickly. So that's the star they earned. Almost no service (all phone based, which would be fine if they checked if you needed water). But the food. Come on guys. The $20 Mac and Cheese tasted like Kraft, if you didn't use the cheese seasoning packet that comes in the Kraft box. To their credit they removed it from my check but ... Geez. They have not handled COVID-19 in the way I'd hope Hillside would. They have shot themselves in the foot with requiring guests to order from their phones, (taking away the personalization that could come from a masked waiter asking for your order and providing a personal touch), using paper products (leaving a less than classy taste in guests' mouth while impacting the environment negatively), and finally the lack of menu items (they didn't have the breakfast sandwich multiple times, that seems like ingredients that could be multi purpose) I am an Austinite and a neighborhood walk to Hillside, and I want this place to do well so badly. The several restaurants within 0.4 miles from Hillside are doing well because they are not following in Hillside's footsteps. I have found myself recommending folks go around the corner to Paperboy because they are safe and sanitary whilst not negatively impacting the guests' experience. @Hillside, please read this and take to heart. Came here with some friends while visiting Austin for brunch and we were rather underwhelmed. The prices were rather high for a brunch spot. To substitute avocado for bacon, it costs an additional $4. Once the plate arrived, it was only half an avocado. The plate I got started at $15 and by the time I added 2 extra eggs ($2 per eggs) and substituted bacon for avocado the total was $23 for a breakfast dish. That felt extremely overpriced. To get a side of fruit it would have costed an additional $5. Anyways, you guys get the idea. Regarding the service, it was moderately slow, nothing terrible but they were not busy at all. All of our dishes came out at different times so we had to stay even longer to wait for all of the members of our group to finish. All in all, I wouldn't come back based on my experience. read more

Everything was 50% off in that category. However they were out of half of the items and we were there right at 3 pm when happy hour started. We ended up getting fries, mac n cheese & crab cakes. Hillside Farmacy is truly an Instagrammer's dream. With photo worthy walls and details at every turn, I'd be sure to have your phone charged before popping in!! Old friends catching up) and we only waited maybe 5 minutes! YAS queen. We ordered a healthy spread and a couple of their virgin cocktails. Everything did come out pretty slowly as expected, but our waitress was super knowledgeable and helpful!
