The atmosphere and food are great here. The waitress was nice. Crab and avocado toast and the burger were standouts. If you like old fashions I would avoid theirs as they use a bunch of small ice rather than a big cube. I would say, word of caution here on the billing. They charge a large credit card fee (we've never seen this anywhere). You also don't get a check at the end. The waitress just tells you the total so you cannot see what's being charged extra (limes, soda water, etc). The suggested tip is for the total (not subtotal) including those fees so you are tipping on tax and fees too. Our bill was much higher from weird fees and extras. read more

Been here many times and have historically liked my experiences here. Tonight, though, I was pretty disappointed. We sat on the patio and while we were eating, a homeless person come up to us and stood at our table for about 5 minutes asking for money awkwardly until he finally left. No one from the restaurant came out during that time, leaving us to deal with it on our own (first world problem, I know, but very uncomfortable and not something you expect to have to deal with when eating out at a historically nice place. When I mentioned it to the server afterward, she responded by saying "everyone has rough days sometimes." The food was also quite mediocre compared to what I've experienced in the past. It was not busy at all, but the food still came out border line cold. En route to Hillside, I also had an encouner with another very aggressive homeless person just outside of Hillside Farmacy who began cursing at me when I did not have money to give him. I felt very unsafe and thought I may actually have to engage in a physical fight given his level of aggression. Although this latter experience is outside Hillside's control, it does seem to be an issue in that general area, so please be careful. Won't be back for quite a while, if ever. Drinks were good and waitress gave my dog some treats, so giving 2 stars for that. read more

Hillside is a gem for multiple reasons, their oysters, burgers, and specials but something about their breakfast just hits home. The restaurant itself was previously one of the first black owned pharmacies and today it carries the same vintage look inside and even still using the beakers to carry liquids. The presentation of the full breakfast spread down to the coffee and milk atop the tile table is so photogenic, I love the aesthetic and option to either dress up the meal with a full outfit or dress down for a casual date. At night the tables are candle lit and such a vibe, the whole experience is definitely worth it. read more

I was here for a private event so I only sampled some light bites, but everything tasted wonderful with fresh herbs and seasoning, and even the fresh strawberries tasted so much more intense than anything you'd find at the grocery store. Drawbacks are that it can be very loud when full of people, and increasingly hot too, and the house sodas were very much not to my taste. But that aside, I imagine a full meal would be excellent and the atmosphere is very charming with 1920s pharmacy decor throughout that's authentic to the history of the building. read more

We waited for 1 1/2 for our food, and our server forgot to add our order to the kitchen. I'm not too sure how you forget to add our order into the kitchen when we got our old fashion drinks. And then when trying to pay for our check out, they charge for the meal we didn't receive... so we were there longer to get that fixed. Overall terrible experience for us. read more

Food was delicious! I got the veggie burger and the buns were so soft and flavorful which always sends a burger over the top with flavor. Service was friendly and accommodating but the food did take way longer than expected to arrive - especially for lunch service. I waited over 10 minutes when it wasn't a crowded restaurant. I specifically asked if lunch service was quick due to my time constraint and hostess assured me it was. It's great to see an old building repurposed while still leaving many of the fixtures intact. The designers did a beautiful job. More importantly, the food is excellent. My favorites are the selection of raw oysters, the kale ceasar salad, and the mac and cheese. Friendly service. I had never been here for dinner so I was excited to try it out. We had the oysters- so fresh and tangy we had three different kinds. Highly recommended! Crab cakes- These were okay. Again nothing special. It may be that I did not get enough of the sauce it came with. I will give it another shot the next time I come here. Cauliflower Gratin-consisted of a broccoli and cauliflower mix crispy and had this great roasted flavor. Very tasty! Kale caesar- it was okay, a little bland. It was not as good as other places. Scallops with orzo- This dish was fantastic! The garlic cream sauce made the dish! So creamy and flavorful but not too heavy. The scallops were perfectly seared. You only got 3 which was a little disappointing but otherwise the dish was good. Drinks- I had the Grapefruit Jalapeño Margartita which was good. It was a spicy, smokey, and sweet. Wow what a find. We ended up here for breakfast because the place next door had a 1.5 hour wait (on a friday morning) even if our group of 12 split into 4 x 3. We were cheerfully greeted at the Farmacy by an enthusiastic hostess hell bent on finding a way to seat us. We were all seated within 5 minutes at two tables. Our waitress was above the bar in all aspects. We felt like we were long time friends by the end of the meal as well as getting superior service. The place has so much character, wonderful happy employees and the drinks and food were so good we came back the next day for brunch. The frozen irish coffee was incredible--so good that after one taste the first day, we knew we would be back just for the drink. Food highlights: fried egg sando, big brekkie, breakfast bowl (not always available) were all very good. The chicken salad sando was melt in your mouth delightful. Hillside Farmacy is a cute, Instagrammable place. Our waitress was very kind. That is pretty much where the good things end. I had this place super high on my list of "must-try" restaurants for a while, so I came here with a friend for an early dinner. We got there at 5 and their happy hour had just ended. It's from 3-5. I joked with the host if it was a happy hour for unemployed people. They were out of a lot of things. Couldn't get oysters or our backup, the shrimp cocktail. We ended up getting their charcuterie board. It seemed like it was stuff from HEB's deli. Don't get me wrong, I love HEB, but one would expect more from an $18 cheeseboard. We ended up not being super hungry, so just got a couple more sides: the fries and the brussels. The fries tasted great but were very soggy. Brussels slapped, though. To their credit, they have a good wine selection. We shared a bottle and had an old-fashioned for our nightcap. Wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. On the heels of SXSW and it was completely empty on a Thursday evening. I feel that says a lot. read more

Solid brunch spot in Austin. We visited Hillside Farmacy for brunch, which was a nice experience. Everything was fresh and delicious and I loved the ambiance. It's clear that once you step into Hillside Farmacy you're stepping into a once-was pharmacy back in the day. I love the historic feel to this building, and especially love that the restaurant has kept to its character. They even store dishes, sauces and condiments on the shelves of what most likely stored medicines. It was around Halloween when we visited, so saw that the place was decked out for it. Gotta love the spirit! Hillside Farmacy offers brunch on the daily, but know that the menu is more limited on the weekdays. We visited on a Friday, and the place was pretty busy, especially with groups. But service was good throughout our dining experience. I ordered the kale caesar salad with chicken and a drip. The kale caesar was really good, and the added chicken was shredded rotisserie chicken. I recommend the add-on of chicken, as it was juicy and seasoned well. I also really liked the fresh parmesan with. Everything tasted very fresh! I would recommend ordering this salad, especially if you like kale. Overall, Hillside Farmacy was a nice place for brunch. We stumbled upon Hillside Farmacy on our last day in Austin. It was so good and we were in such a great mood we decided to stay another day lol! My husband and I both ordered the buttermilk pancakes and bacon. Plus potatoes...for drinks I had the turmeric soda with lemon and ginger! So refreshing I came back to Houston and attempted to make the same. My husband had coffee with added CBD. If you look at the right hand side down to the bottom of the menu there's a QR code. Ordering food contactless using the toast app was something we encountered a couple of times in Austin. I love experiencing new ways of ordering and getting services... This area of town is packed for brunch! We were turned away at one establishment due to rain and the closing of their outdoor seating. We had our dog with us...but it was a blessing because we were led to Hillside. I thought this place was so cute inside and out. It's a historical landmark in Texas that really was an operating pharmacy in the 70's. They don't have reservations for brunch and it's only walk-in. We had to wait quite a while for a table and when we got a table it was outside in the Texas heat! But hey they had umbrellas and some shade so it wasn't too bad. Went for brunch and will never go back. Waited for a table for over an hour (which is fine because we had a large group) however, there was an open table next to the bar for a large tip table. I asked the hostess if the reservation doesn't show if we could sit there but I received a vague answer. After an hour of waiting, I noticed the hostess sat three individuals at the table that arrived well after we did. I again asked the hostess and she ignored me stating, " I'll be right back." I then asked the three individuals if they would mind if we shared the table. They were more than happy to and even said, "we were wondering why they sat us here since your group is so much larger and we came after you." Regardless, the service was subpar, the restaurant was out of many food items (which their menu is already small), and the drinks were heavy on the juice instead of the pour of spirit. UPDATE: I am updating my 5 star review to reflect my experience last weekend. I called ahead to see if there was a 2 table available. I was told that the restaurant closes down from 3-4 but if I could make it before 3 to order, we would be fine. We walked in at 2:56(?) and I asked if we still had time. The hostess was unexpectedly rude and said "only if you order within the next 60 seconds." We hadn't even been seated and my boyfriend was still parking the car. That hostess has always been veryyy unpleasant. We sat at the bar and the blonde bartender/server was also rude and refused to look us in the eye. We each ordered our usual egg sandwich, because it's amazing, and it came without sprouts. The sprouts are my favorite part on the meal!! My boyfriends sandwich was so sloppily made that he couldn't even pick it up. It was blatantly obvious that the kitchen was pissed we ordered AT 3. Weekend brunch is very common in Austin and I was shocked about how the staff handled us coming in right before the kitchen closed. I'm struggling even rating this as a 4 star review but the afternoon staff has always been delightful compared to the morning shift. read more

We definitely didn't mind the 45 minute wait for a table. At all. We were a group of seven and anticipated a long wait. We even killed time across the street at Quickie Pickie with some coffee and snacks (a few even "snacked" on breakfast tacos). But we *did* mind the long wait for food and drinks after we ordered. In addition to this, we didn't have the most attentive or friendly service. We felt like an inconvenience to our server. They even ran out of carafes for our mimosas. And this was *after* their big brunch rush. After eating, no one really had much comment about the food. We don't know if everyone cleaned their plate because of hunger or because it was good. I will say, however, the pancakes were memorable. Do get those. The wasabi blood mary was good too, but $2 for adding on one shrimp was disappointing. Overall, I think the food was average, but the service really brought down the entire experience. With so many other brunch options in Austin, I wouldn't go back to Hillside Farmacy. read more

First off, this place is really cute but that's about it. The service isn't great, the staff is standoffish, and everything is very overpriced. I really enjoy their brunch menu but I wouldn't recommend going to dinner here. The burger is flavorless and for $8 more you can add cheese, and egg and avocado that'll make it even more flavorless and have your burger fall apart mid-bite.
