    57. Fahfahena Limeade Smoothie
    Kevin K.

Fahfakhina or Araisy. So yeah, have you ever tried to stress test the thin line between smoothie and shake? There's always this thin vaneer of "healthiness" hidden behind a smoothie, like if you toss an apple, a banana, 2 raw eggs, whey protein powder and peanut butter into a blender with a scoop of ice, somehow the contents of the dasher is now automatically healthy, and you'll get swol/ripped if you pound 3 a day, deadlift 230 on the press, and spend 3 hours at the gym. Well, the problem here is that you can easily spend 20 minutes working out and 2 hours 40 minutes posing, and then ingest almost 1000 calories on the wrong thing (whipped cream + ice cream + mango syrup). Me, I just go directly to the jugular, ignore the healthy swol muscleboy nonsense and go for the stuff that I like. And what do I like? Araisy. What's an Araisy? It's an Arab milkshake/smoothie that contains fruits and nuts, commonly served in places like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen or the UAE. Since I frequent Arab neighborhoods like the Upper Steinway section of Astoria and/or Bay Ridge, it's one of those things that I have an affinity for - of course, most coffee joints have a variant of that (like Selab served at Elkayam in Astoria), as does most good seafood places (Sabry's have their cocktail), but you know which version I like? The one at Hemo's. What do they have? Cold mango yogurt, chopped apples and mango, peanuts, dried dates and raisins, generously annointed with berry syrup. How much is it? 20 oz is about 7 bucks as of Summer 2022. Why should you have it here? Eeeh, I had it at other places, and they are either runny, flavorless not cold, doesn't have much nuts and fruits, or a combination of all 4. You want it to be thick, flavorful, cold with plenty of fixins'? Get it at Hemos. You know what's great? Walking along Park Slope, 3rd or 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, or Upper Steinway in Astoria with an Araisy in your hand (yes, they have multiple locations). You know what's even better? Pay 2 dollars extra and spring for the Fahfakhina - which is an Araisy but with ice cream added. Know what's even better than that? The Hemo Special. A halal hamburger (a bit thin on the patty), fries and a freaking Araisy for 14 bucks (not available at Park Slope). Yeah, you can certainly give their juices and crazy sandwiches a try, or go next door for their coffee. Me? Araisy or Fahfakhina. Always.

(I'm going to update and preface my review by stating that Hemo's Spot spinach pies are the best I've had in my entire life. Loaded with spinach and so lemony. And that dough! Very delicious). Popular corner spot on 5th Avenue that has undergone a name change (possibly new owners). Whenever in the area, I drop in to have some kind of beverage, whether hot or cold. In addition to tea, coffee, smoothies and juices, it seems they've expanded with more food choices. Burgers and fries seemed to be the go to lunch today, but there were many Middle Eastern delights (my preference) such as spinach pies and a variety of breads--cheese, meat and my favorite, Za'atar loaded with all those delicious spices. It smelled delightful in there. I also saw Medjool dates and snacks/desserts available for purchase. Some necessary information: ample seating, restrooms, credit cards accepted (you'll be charged tax) and friendly/helpful staff. I ordered the #97 juice, super protein, which was kale, apple, pineapple and cucumber. Reasonably priced at $5 for 16 ounces. I also took home spinach pies and a Za'atar bread ($3 a piece). I like Hemo's Spot. Quick, delicious, clean and hits the spot for a craving (pun intended).

There are two Hemo's - one is a juice bar/cafe, and it's next door to their other spot which is... also a cafe, but with more food? Honestly, not sure. I just wanted coffee so I stopped in the smaller one (it's on 5th and not on the corner). They have lots of baked snacks, spices you can buy by weight, and of course, coffee. Got a latte, and it was pretty damn good.

So many options, healthy and comfort food. Had Chai here too on a rainy day, mm A welcoming place, attracts so many different types of people. I find it as a gem of a place to get work done with wifi, couches, and nourishment.

3arsi drink: mango smoothie with a syrup, don't know what it is but tastes so good.

I feel like I am with my Italian friends and family in Corona,NY. There is nothing but love in all three restaurants. They have everything covered. The fried calamari could've been less oily, as this took away from the crunch; also slightly overcooked. Baked clams were decent. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Pizza was great! They reheated for us, since our group was too busy chatting. Desserts - phenomenal! Drinks- ehh. Brunch menu - French toast was decent. The salmon over hash brown , was lacking a touch of something , couldn't pinpoint what was lacking. Chicken and waffles, decent, wasn't the best I've had. Service- jonathan was our waiter during brunch and also our bartender. He's GREAT! During service dinner, we had a female waitress and I felt she lacked attention to details and couldn't flag her down when we wanted something. Overall, service is a hit or miss , I guess? Bay Ridge continues its steep decline in the food scene with this cheesesteak wannabe restaurant…read more I have been to Philadelphia and had my fair share of cheesesteaks there. Some really good, some not so good, most somewhere in between. This one falls closer to the second option, and not just because this cash only joint (boo...) charges $13 for one, and it is pretty small. For an extra $9, you get fries and a drink. I took the deal, not realizing the fries are your traditional "bowling alley fries". I took one bite and threw the rest away. $9 extra wasted away. As for the steak itself, it is quite hit or miss. They also try to jazz it up to the point where it can be completely unrecognizable if you wish. No thanks. A good steak is just ribeye steak and a choice of three cheeses, Cheez Whiz, White American, or Provolone. Stop the nonsense with Yellow American. Also, the roll should be strictly Amoroso. I did not see that here. I already deduct two stars for lack of authenticity. The final star deduction comes in the form of an inconsistent steak. Throughout the experience, I was getting different bites each time I took a bite. Some bites were really good, others were flat. The steak is also cooked with far too much salt for my liking. I also felt the customer service was flat too. There was no knowledge of the menu items except for the sesame roll. The roll is also too chewy for this kind of sandwich. They also serve pizza, but it does not make any sense to me why. Honestly, it did not look good in the display case when I saw it. I am taking it off my favorites and will not be returning. Not every cheesesteak has to be a John's Roast Pork or a Tony Luke's, but a little more effort could put this little hole in the wall joint in Bay Ridge closer to them.

My new favorite restaurant…read more The food was good, fresh, presumably well-sourced based on taste, and a very fair value. The restaurant is not overly expensive -- the $65.00 lunch bill below suggests a high-end selection and/or apps. I had a pineapple mint lemonade, sea bass on saffron risotto, a lovely salad topped with potato gnocchi, and cake dessert for $85 inclusive of 20% tip and tax. Nearly everything tasted fresh and homemade. Worth it. If this were served in Restaurant Row, the bill would be $40 more and the food not nearly as good. Because Beets & Carrots offers something rare and startlingly somehow in decline: food that tastes like food the body happily accepts as such. They serve meals that stand out simply because they taste like food. It was nice to dine outside the home feeling confident no digestive issues, lethargy, brain fog, bloating, etc were around the corner. You can tell that someone health conscious who cares about how ingredients show up in the meal is in the kitchen, someone who thinks food is both very fun and very serious. Least favorite: The lemonade. Mostly personal preference here, as I prefer a much tarter, less watery lemonade with higher lemon:water volume ratio. But I think most people would like it; I would get it again. Favorite: Both the entree and salad (which surprised me with a deliciously simple horseradish dressing) were great, but the bass wins in my book. Skin crisped to perfection...very flavorful fish and a great cut...creamy, perfect risotto. I appreciated that the risotto wasn't too salty as well.

You would never know what this place is due to lack of actual signage on it, and weakling by you'd think it's a grab and go of some kind BUT NOT AT ALL!! This place whatever we ordered which was a lot have great flavors and were perfectly cooked . The start of the show was also unfortunately the one that disappointed as well. So the lobster new berg flavors were amazing I'd want to order it over and over but I will never again either . Portion is abnormally small, and for the price of 40$ you definitely would expect a lot more and also seems as if the lobster was also overly chopped and not enough in the dish . The burgers were great Stroganoff was amazing And the gnocchi the duck ragu But every item are over small in portions unfortunately So if you want greys flavors or even amazing flavors but are a light eater then this is your spot

When I brought it to the waitresses attention she said it comes with either bacon or sausage and I was like, okay you didn't ask so I wasn't aware. To which she responded that it was on the menu and proceeded to bring over the menu for me to read as if I couldn't understand her. I was really tired that morning so I guess that parts on me for just reading what I want and ordering it, but as someone who's work in the service industry you also clarify what the customer would like. I never said I wanted ONLY eggs. Just the way she handled it was really rude when I didn't even make a fuss I was just confused why there was nothing in my burrito weird energy here if you're not a white townie. Came in as a party of two on a rainy Sunday for their brunch menu and was quickly seated and served. Waiters/waitresses were very attentive and quick to give us menus, waters, take our orders, and clear our empty plates when we finished the app/food. Definitely has a pub/sports bar vibe with bar seating and multiple screens broadcasting pretty much all the sunday NFL games. But they also had ample seating for larger parties and families and it definitely seems like a place that locals visit often. The food was great, though we wouldve liked to try the chicken empanadas if we noticed it on the menu early. Oh wells, maybe next time!

We ordered the chicken liver mousse, crispy potato tart, and burger. The chicken liver mousse is a must order and something I get every time I come here, whether it is this location or the Park Slope one. The mousse itself is rich, creamy, savory, and packed with umami. I just wish it came with something better on the side. The pita was a little underwhelming and was not warmed all the way through. The crispy potato tart was excellent. The potato was super crispy, and a bite with the salmon, egg, sour cream, and potato together was perfect. The lightly dressed arugula helped cut through the richness and made for a nice palate cleanser. The burger looked pretty simple when it arrived, but it ended up being surprisingly good. The patty was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Overall, a great neighborhood spot and one I would happily come back to.
