3/5 for delivery: got the combo pho and rainbow jelly dessert. The combo pho was very tasty, but by the time the pho was delivered the broth was more lukewarm, and I had to reheat on my stove to properly cook the raw meat (soup didn't seem hot enough). The noodles were also fairly stuck together - this seems to generally happen with most takeout noodles from restaurants. However, the pho broth was very tasty, and I thought the meat and meatball portions were very generous. My one question was around the rainbow jelly dessert - it looks like I was only delivered half a serving? I love Saigon Shack's banh mi, another Vietnamese restaurant about a block from Hello Saigon, but their pho and bun/dry vermicelli has left me disappointed on more than one occasion so I was more than excited for a new place to get my noodle fix. First off, the broth is really flavorful. The meat portions are also a lot more than what Love Mama gives, and I love that the beef is a lot leaner (some people prefer fattier beef, but not me). Service was good and the staff was attentive, although I do have to strangely note that the table didn't have napkins (which they quickly remedied). They have a really sweet 15% grand opening right now, so if you're going to visit this place now would be a good time. I'll be back to try the bun next time. read more

I was so excited to discover there was another vietnamese place that was walking distance from where I work! My go-to place has been Saigon Shack but it gets annoying because they're cash only and they're always crazy busy so usually you would just have to pick up food and eat elsewhere. My co-worker and I came here today excited to try out a couple of their popular dishes we saw online! Their short rib pho and the pork chop vermicelli bowl. We got there a little after 12pm and was surprised with how big the restaurant is (at least double if not more the size of Saigon Shack) and also how empty it was especially with the high ratings. There was only a few tables when we first walked in and they also have a bar area with at least 7 bar chairs. We ordered the short rib pho and pork chop vermicelli bowl but already agreed that we had to come back again to try their other items since their menu was so large! The food came out pretty quickly which was nice. My co-worker said she really liked her pork chop vermicelli, I didn't try it so I can't go into details on that. But I loved my short rib pho! When the bowl first came out it looked kind of small but tall so I was worried it was a small portion, but when you start eating you realize there's actually a lot of noodles in the deep bowl! I first tasted the broth and it was very flavorful. It's thoughtful that they give you a separate plate to put your short rib on and cut off the meat. The short rib pretty much fell off the bone and it was very delicious! This was my first time having short rib pho, and I would definitely recommend it! This is a really cool alternative to the much more trendy/popular Saigon Shack. Although these two places are not connected (to my knowledge). I came here on a weeknight and didn't have trouble getting a table during peak dinner hours. They serve a variety of Vietnamese dishes included pho, bun and rice dishes. I got the bo luc lac (juicy steak pieces over rice) and it was pretty legit. I'll have to be back some time to try the pho and bun. This place is pretty casual so don't expect fancy decor or anything. I'm loving that there's new Vietnamese places sprouting up in NYC. 10 years ago there were barely any good Vietnamese restaurants, and now there's many more. The meat in my most recent bowl was a bit tough but the broth was quite flavorful. Fried spring rolls are consistent and I remember the banh mi being well executed. I did not enjoy the tamarind lollipop chicken appetizer special. Perhaps I just had the wrong idea of what to expect, but the dish was too saucy and the unexpected vegetables were pointless as they were drowned in salty, tangy sauce. When it comes to Vietnamese food, I stick to either their Pho soups or Bun rice vermicelli dishes. This evening, I selected the Pho soup considering it was a raw, rainy and chilly night. There's the option of beef bone, vegetable or chicken broth and of course a variety of protein. I chose the vegetable broth with grilled shrimp. It was a nicely sized portion and as always, I enjoy garnishing my Pho soup with bean sprouts, basil leaves, fresh lime and sauces. My friend ordered the beef Pho soup while another opted for their dinner special. At $13.95, it includes choice of an appetizer and a main (but not a signature Vietnamese selection such as Pho or Bun entrée). Both enjoyed their selections. There's also happy hour----get this---$3.00 for choice of house wine or draft beer. The Pinot Noir tasted quite good. Cannot go wrong at that price either. The décor is lovely, spacious and clean. I just come here for Pho as it's one of my favorite dishes in the world and Hello Saigon has one of the best in New York. When it comes to Pho, the broth has to be good and here it's excellent. I believe the way that you're supposed to make it is you slow cook beef bones up to 12 hours with a number of different herbs and root vegetables. Not all places will make the effort to do this and just use a beef broth but here you get an authentic and delicious broth base for your bowl of noodles. The ingredients I've found also very fresh, meat is tender and noodles are well made so all in all you're in for some good food and it's inexpensive as well. read more

I really enjoyed the food here (would have given 4 stars) and the reason why I am giving only two stars is because of the restaurant's dishonesty. On yelp, there is a check-in deal that allows 25% off if you pay in cash. When I called the restaurant to make this reservation, I was told that this deal was still in effect. However, upon paying the check, we were suddenly told this deal no longer existed! If this is the case, then they should have updated their yelp profile and also told me this over the phone. Walked in on a chilly weekday evening for dinner with a friend. We each got the signature short rib pho, which comes with only a giant beef rib and your usual accouterments. The short rib was fall of the bone, melt in your mouth good. Seriously - I wanted to take a picture and the entire thing slid right off the bone. Hello Saigon was a decent Vietnamese restaurant, definitely not the best or worst I've had in NYC. I ordered the summer rolls which were just fine, fresh but not too much flavor in the rolls nor their accompanying peanut sauce, and the spicy beef and pork Hue style pho. The meat in the pho turned me off a little, there were chunks of fat on it and it was a bit overcooked. The broth was just OK, but I tried the vegetarian broth that my friend got with her veggie pho and it tasted pretty good. I've never dabbled in vegetarian pho before but maybe it is worth it. Honestly I probably would not return because Chinatown is close and you can get better, cheaper pho there, or you can go a few blocks away to Saigon Shack where the pho is some of the best I've had even though at first I thought it was a tourist trap. They used some good harsh coffee for the condense milk to smooth out. Egg rolls used the skin that bubbles up to a crisp. The egg rolls came with a side of lettuce for wrapping. I was glad that we got in kind of early because the place quickly filled up and by the time we left, there were people waiting outside for tables. I imagine it's because this place offers a discount for NYU students. This place offers your standard Vietnamese fare. Food so good, I had to break my years long review hiatus. (TL;DR--skip to 3rd section) It's not news that the Vietnamese food in NYC is a bit....lacking. It's a comment that is frequently uttered, usually by Vietnamese people, persons from that West Coast wonderland, or anyone from Houston. However, there seems to be a surge of establishments from the land of the ascending dragon opening around the city. Hello Saigon is one of them and they are a standout! From fancy AF Hanoi House (their prices make my soul hurt) to Madam Vo's (their prices also hurt), there are now a few good choices to satisfy any sudden pho cravings. I've now tried all 3 places and Hello Saigon is my favorite. They're the perfect combo of price (it's actually reasonable), deliciousness, & authenticity. Authentic Bc the workers and owners are Vietnamese, the menu is in Vietnamese, and you can ORDER in Vietnamese. That last bit is probably only useful to a few people, but I love it. ORDER: the cha gio, pho, & cafe su da. The cha gio is perfectly crispy, filled with pork, wood ear mushrooms & vermicelli--like how my mom makes it. The pho is clean & flavorful, doesn't skimp on the meat, & comes with fresh basil that doesn't look like it was beaten to death. The cafe su da is just the fucking best. Just get it & drink it & feel the power of caffeine course through your veins. I've also had the bun bo hue but would recommend skipping it. It's not as well done as the pho. Highlights: those awkward Christmas lights, & the 90's/2000's Vietnamese "pop" playlist from YouTube brings back all the memories for me. Since visiting the 1st time, I already followed up with a 2nd visit within the week and the West Village isn't exactly close to me.
