Turkey club with sweet potato fries
Steve O.

The place has a very friendly, neighborly feel to it. I ordered the turkey club with the sweet potato fries and both were very good. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. This would be a great place to watch some games or meetup with friends

Solid restaurant on the east side of Austin. They have a beer list with over 100 beer options that regularly rotate. For food, you can't go wrong with the chicken wings. They have tons of TVs if you are a sports fan. There's an outdoor patio and indoor seating as well.

Nothing fancy, just easy drinking and a chill sports bar. The drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it's a good spot to catch a game without any fuss. I tried one of their mystery shots and got the dirty monkey (banana peanut butter whiskey), which was surprisingly good plus a couple of margaritas, which were decent for the price.

My first time at Haymaker and I went with colleagues. They've got a terrific happy hour and a big selection of beers and cocktails. Food is typical bar fare...on steroids! Meaning they've taken the typical fare and raised it by a crazy number of notches. Breaded/fried pretzel bites? Yes, please! Sausage balls? Yes, please. BLT is a perfect comfort food sandwich. Really chill place to hang with co-workers, friends, etc. Super attentive service.

Haymaker has good social vibes outside and has more of a dive bar feeling inside. It is optimal for socializing with a big group. They have daily drink specials, although I didn't get a drink when we went on a Friday because I don't drink margs. Their food and drinks are definitely on the pricer side for a casual sports bar. My friends ordered the garlic parmesan wings, which they really enjoyed. I got the hay-mac and cheese, which is a small bowl topped with garlic bread crumbs. It ended up being about $10, which was pricey for such a small portion. I thought it was good but nothing to rave about. The service was friendly.

They use to have beer cheese that was SO good - GONE! They use to have homemade chips - GONE So, I ordered the spinach artichoke. I'd rather have the TGIFriday frozen one from HEB. At least that one has flavor. This dip had SO much garlic. The grainy consistency left much to be desired. Do not order this!! This place has changed a lot since I was last here. Can't say it's for the better. Service was meh. Nice girl. Atmosphere hasn't change, so that was comforting. I will think twice before coming back here.

The service was good, especially for how busy it is. This is definitely a sports bar with many TVs on different sports. I ordered the garlic parm wings. The wing itself was nice and crispy, but there was sooo much oil that it took away from it.

I met my brother here before a basketball game at Moody Center. The weather was perfect for a nice lunch on their deck. Our waitress was friendly and several different crowds were enjoying sports. One group was watching the football (soccer) game and another group was inside watching American football. It's a great place for sports! I ordered a sangria which was $4 for a Sunday special. We tried the warm salsa -which was on the fall menu. At first, it had a great taste. Then you mostly tasted vinegar. I think warming it brought out too much of the vinegar taste. Maybe a bit of Mexican sour cream on top as the fat to balance the acid?? I got the French dip sandwich which was inedible. I took one bite and there was a bunch of fat. I took another bite and again...mostly fat. I took the sandwich apart to see if there was any redeeming pieces of meat but sadly, no. Even my brother noted how fatty it was. I don't know if it was just a bad cut but it was disappointing. :( I could have used more fries on my plate considering this is all I ate. My brother ordered a Reuben and his sandwich looked amazing!! (See pics) This neighborhood joint has been around for a while. The burgers have always been solid. I wish I had gone with my standby and ordered that instead. The patio is dog friendly and I made some new (dog) friends that day. :)y

Do they allow dogs on the patio?

Yes! There are always dogs outside every time I've been there. I've even seen water bowls.

Do you know if they have BTN or Big 10 Network? Thanks!

Yes!

My favorite out of those items was the mushroom salad with vinagarette dressing, who doesn't love mushrooms and some greens! The etouffee was rich and savory with what i believe was their rotating protein of the week. Can't really go wrong with red beans and rice, these are like an upgraded popeyes version. To end the meal we tried their beignets which weren't stellar but reminded me more of a fried donut with some powdered sugar sprinkled on top. I was impressed with the chicken fried steak and the complimentary corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits. I even got a slice of sweet potato pie once near Thanksgiving. But Hoover's closed down the S.A. restaurant a few months later. No biggie. I'll just go dine at the original one in Austin. A few months later on a rainy and ugly day in Austin in March 2006 I rode the bus from downtown to here. The restaurant was huge and roomy and I got seated but had to wait a long time for a waiter and left as soon as I saw people that got seated after me got served first. A few months later I rode the bus to here and got seated and was served by a young white guy who seemed exhausted and wanted to be anywhere except work. 20 years later I found out the sad news that Hoover's last day in business would be today May 31,2026. I drove here from San Antonio and noticed how much the restaurant has changed. It got smaller inside. Maybe the 2020 pandemic had something to do with that. I got seated and waited on by a friendly black waiter and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a cup of gumbo for an appetizer which was good, hot and satisfying. For the entree I got the chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and buttered spinach. The sides were okay but the CFS was a bit tough when I cut into it. For dessert, a slice of chocolate cream pie was the perfect way to end the meal. I came here one last time last week and got here earlier than I had arrived last time. I was waited on by a Hispanic waiter who seemed friendly but I had a weird feeling he was staring at me weird whenever he left my table. For appetizer I ordered a small cornbread and 2 biscuit muffins. They no longer served the free corn muffins and sweet potato biscuits like they used to serve 20 years ago. I got the Jamaican jerk chicken and a hot sausage link with cowboy beans and coleslaw. The beans were great and the slaw was okay. The perk chicken seemed a bit dry but good and the sausage was good but not as spicy as I expected. The cornbread was good and so were the biscuit muffins that were big for just 99 cents a pop. I ordered the banana pudding for dessert and that was a good conclusion to my last meal here at Hoover's. Hoover's Cooking is an Austin original that will be greatly missed. I hope whatever restaurant that moves into this soon to be vacant space will serve good food at an affordable price and won't be like the other places on Manor that serve outrageous prices for food that is just mediocre or subpar.

You can't go wrong, everything on the menu is a hit. We shared appetizers, like the queso w/chips and the cornbread. I had to remember to save room for dessert because the cheesecake here is amazing! I had the chocolate and cranberry cheesecake, which is worth every bite. The service is also excellent. They know they're closing but that did not stop them from taking care of our group like we were family. Our group enjoyed every bit of the experience. I hope to make it back again. The cheddar hash brown had a great crispy exterior with a creamy center, and the empanada was flaky with a well-seasoned filling. The cortado was also well-made and a nice way to finish the meal. Unfortunately, the overall experience was brought down by the seating. When we were seated outside, we were told it was our "lucky day" because the patio had fans. In reality, it was extremely hot and uncomfortable despite the fans, and there were pigeons constantly flying around the tables, which wasn't the relaxing brunch atmosphere we were hoping for. Service was fine...nothing exceptional, but no major issues either. I'd come back for the food, but I'd definitely wait for an indoor table next time. The kitchen delivered, but the outdoor dining experience made it difficult to fully enjoy the meal.

We were excited to try the food, and were hungry. Our server appeared (I can't remember his name but he was a short guy with blond hair). I ordered a cocktail and my husband ordered beer to begin with. He went away and then came back asking my husband if he wanted some whiskey cocktail, and we corrected him that we had asked for a particular beer. No big deal. We then ordered the deviled eggs and shishito peppers, and the red fish and short ribs for entree. A lady brought us the drinks, and the deviled eggs. Our server swung by and then disappeared. We thought the shishito peppers were on their way. We waited for what seemed like a really long time and still no shishito peppers. We also noticed that each table had a carafe of water except ours. We were just given water once, and then our server never bothered to fill the water up. Anyway, we kept waiting since there was no sign of the server. At this point, we felt he might have forgotten the second appetizer and we just did not want it, but he was nowhere to be found. A man (not our server) brought out our entrees. We then told him that we had been waiting for our second appetizer and would just want to cancel it. We asked if we could get the biscuits instead. He brought out the biscuits within a few minutes. Now this is where it really annoyed us. Had our server just come over and said he had forgotten our shishito peppers, it would have been okay. Human. What he tried was act smart and dropped by saying the shishito peppers would be out to which we said that we didn't want an appetizer after an entree and had cancelled it. I almost felt like he was treating us as if he thought we don't really dine out or whatever and he could just make fools of us. This really didn't sit right with me. We asked him for water and he filled it up left. The food was above average. The short ribs were good but my red fish had been hammered! The biscuits were good. The deviled eggs were good as well. Anyway, we finished our meal, and got the check, paid, and were waiting to finish our drinks. The receipt was on our table. Also, note, it was not a particularly busy day with several empty tables. What our server did next was absolutely unacceptable. I think he wanted to see if we had tipped him after his awful service. We did, but not 20% as we always do because of the soddy job he did, not to mention his attitude. We paid 15% which I think was more than what he deserved now. Out of nowhere, and mind you, after being absent for long periods before, he just came by, grabbed the paid up bill from our table to our shock, while we were still sitting and talking, looked at the bill, turned towards us, and muttered something angry under his breath and walked away. I have never seen this level of entitlement and bad behavior. We left right away. We had been really looking forward to this meal but I would not want to go back. The food was good, but not great, and I would not want to put up with such obnoxious behavior as a paying customer.

But I enjoy new experiences and menus with eclectic dishes. The menu had few choices for breakfast and I was unsure why it was suggested as a breakfast place. It's actually a good place to eat any time of day! The beautifully decorated patio provided the perfect welcome into their modestly decorated air conditioned restaurant and bar. When I say bar, it's more like a 1950s bar that you can sit at and have a meal at. Although drinks and meals were offered any time of day! The waitress was pleasant and helpful in suggesting add ons with my meal. But being a purist, I wanted to try it as intended. The food arrived in the normal amount of time. When I first saw my mozzarella omelette I was a little surprised! It didn't look anything like what it was described as! Oh well! I thought. Let's give it a try! My taste buds were happily amazed! Could this omelette smothered in mushroom gravy, green "pesto" and bread crumbs be the best omelette I've ever had?! The mushroom tomato gravy was so smooth! Along with the cilantro avocado topping. That tasted more like pesto, gave it the perfect zing! I had wished I the had ordered some toast to dip in the sauce. I could have done without the bread crumbs. But they were easily swept to the side. The amount of mozzarella cheese in this omelette led me to believe it was more of an omelette lasagna than a plain old omelette.
