I somehow managed to never patronize Posse East while I was at UT. So while in Austin on a sunny winter day it seemed a good idea while on campus especially the óutdoor´ area is roofed but still sunny. I forgot how Austin feels kind of beachy with its balmy sunny weather and the infectious sunny disposition of locals. At Posse East, there is the other special element still around Austin - that backwoods red neck vibe. Posse East is literally a shack - with cheap beer and honky tonk vibe. It's not fabricated. Beer drinking guys kind of dominate the landscape ' but people come here to study too. I ordered the burger with tater tots and a Lone star. Posse East has been in Austin for over 51 years and their burgers are classic. I got the cheeseburger and the patties looked hand shaped. The meat had a good mix so once cooked it was moist and beefy. I also liked how it was salted just right. There are too many places that just over salt their burgers or under salt them and over salting to me is worst. They also managed to balance the richness of the beef and fats so you didn't feel full at first bite but satisfied after finishing the burger. Just the right mix of Mayo and mustard. There is no need for ketchup on these burgers! The greens and the onions gave it a good texture. Wash it down with a beer and everything is all right. read more

She was rude and snarky, we didn't know that we could dispose of our trash outside as it was our first time and she gripped that it should be disposed outside. Picked up dinner here tonight and liked my order but didn't love it. I ordered the wagyu burger as my main course and it was ok but a pretty basic burger in my opinion. Not that big overall, and the patty wasn't big or anything special as I had hoped it would be as I upgraded to the wagyu option. It was like a good burger I could have made at home. The sweet potato fries were a huge let down... cold and limp by the time I got home, which was a less than 10 minute drive away. I ordered through Grubhub and know that timing is tough with 3rd party apps, so I wouldn't count them out on their sweet potato fries, but I was left less than impressed with that. Where I was SUPER impressed was the last second addition to my order... chips and queso. It was a cheap app and I've been craving queso lately. I got a decent size portion of queso and a HUGE ziplock bag full of tasty chips. Man I might go back to this place just for this app. Amazing value, so much so that I wonder if they didn't give me a size up by accident. A solid 3.5* experience, but will round them up to 4* since the food was ready early and they had a proper Covid setup for pickup, and I appreciate that. read more

This is probably the best UT sports bar in town (Beaufords is arguably better). You can see the football stadium and feel the UT energy on game day. Also they have unbelievably cheap beer and food. If you want to watch a game or want to save some money, come by. In terms of beer selection, nothing special. The standard Austin starter pack on tap. But, for 12 dollar pitchers of shiner, who cares. They also have cans of cider/white claw if you dont like beer. In terms of food, tater tots, fries, burgers, nachos are exactly what you expect. Back yard bbq, dads had a beer, perfect when your a little tipsy. They toast the buns which is nice. Plus they have a bar with jalapeno, salsa, etc. Its a little crusty so use at your own risk. One knock against them is that they dont have heinz ketchup. They have French's. Ive also ventured out and gotten wagyu patty (because i know you are wondering). There are a lot of red flags here. For one its wagyu raised in austin. Second, its only 9 dollars. Its a standard bar burger. I couldnt tell the difference between this and the regular burger for 5 dollars. Posse East is a cool place to eat located in a pre WWII strip mall where my family used to shop when I was a kid growing up two blocks from the UT campus long ago. It was neat to return to my old neighborhood after all these many years although when I told people about my personal history and relationship to the local geography they could hardly wait for me to shut up. Anyway Posse East is about as far from a chain as one can get. It is pretty divey in a very positive sense. I had a spicy chicken sandwich a la Chick Filet with fries. Everything was hot, prepared from scratch and excellent. They have a variety of condiments including salsa and pico de gallo. The food was very good and I loved the ambiance. I say "discover" because I was not a UT undergrad, nor was I in Austin when the bar opened in 1972; a pal told me about it recently and I went for their Monday craft beer night. $2.25 Texas craft beers? And hamburgers and cheese fries and fish and chips and soft OR puffy tacos? Yes please. Yes all DAY. One of the best parts of hanging at Posse East (aside from the beer and food and that everyone there, from staff to clientele, is cool) is in telling people you went there, and having them burst out with "Oh! I came here after studying all night at the ATT conference center. This is a nice place to watch a game and have a beer. The food was solid and the queso was really good. Atmosphere is that of a college bar but it brings back memories for me being around all those kids. We did come in a bit early so parking up front was a breeze. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They recommended the regular cheeseburger if this was our first visit. This is a solid campus, dive bar that offers fried bar food. I had the Caesar Salad + Chicken. The stoic waitress announced via intercom that my dish was ready and when I collected it from the dirty bar top counter, I noticed it was plated perfectly. Fresh, green lettuce, charred chicken cut into strips, and a side of creamy dressing. Once combined, the salad was pretty good. The chicken had a funky flavor and I'm pretty sure it was once frozen, but hey, it was $7. I'm not sure I'd get it again. This place definitely strives to be labeled as a dive and it succeeds! We might of had a little more of an emotional tie to this place as my boyfriend was a member of the fraternity across the street.
