First of all, I've been coming to this spot since the 80s (before it was the Crown!), but after leaving ATX in 2013, my trips to the Crown have been few and far between (last one was in 2018). I knew I wanted a burger from the Crown before I started the long drive from South Carolina. Despite a literal wrench in my tire, I managed to make it there on 2/28 by 1pm, where my travelling companion and I met up with an old friend of mine from college. There was a bike swap going on, which felt about right for ATX. We ordered a beer and a burger then settled in on the porch (the part I call the "inside/outside" because it has a roof). I'm not going to say the Crown has the best burgers in the world. I guess it depends on what you want in a burger. I will say that, for the price, the Crown has the best pub burger - a good basic burger. I got a jalapeno cheeseburger, but I can attest to the deliciousness of the veggie burger and the mushroom-swiss. Back in the early 90s we used to bring my daughter with us and she would play pinball with my friend, Dirk. The bartenders at the time included a couple of guys who used to work at Duddley's Draw in College Station, TX. In the early oughts, I would come in for lunch and try to decide if I wanted the chicken tacos or a burger. Later I came in with the guy I was dating for too long for beers and a burger. Times change, Austin grows (parts are completely unrecognizable and no longer have that "vibe" that seems uniquely Austin; however, the Crown is a jewel in the rough that continues to shine for those of us who can see it. I had an awkward piece of time on 3/4/26 so I stopped by for a NA Guinness before heading out to see my aunt in Lakeway. I had the pleasure of seeing Derwin! My trip wouldn't have been complete without saying "hi." It took a minute, but he did eventually remember me! Here's to hoping it doesn't take another 8 years; because, we only get older and my friends are starting to show their age! I hope the Crown continues to serve great burgers and cold beers. I'll be back next time I make the pilgrimage home! read more

Cute little pub next to campus. It has a patio area so we swing by here while the weather was nice in December. Fun Austin bar near UT. They only have beer but they have NA ones. If you're nearby, swing by for a beer! They also have sports on the TVs. read more

Solid burger and a great Austin bar. I do think the burger is overrated and definitely not a top burger in Austin. My friends were even going as far to say it's a 6.0 burger. I think it's more of an average burger like a 7.3. Love drinking here but the food is only for if you are starving. read more

Everyone knows this place has been around since the 80s and is a fixture on the Austin college bar scene. In fact, when my boyfriend went to UT way back when, this was one of the old stomping grounds with his mates. That said, it isn't strictly a college bar, and we have gone on several occasions over the last decade or so. As you can imagine, they get crazy busy but the service doesn't suffer because of it. They have indoor and outdoor seating, drink specials, and food. The cheeseburger and fries platter is really great bar fare and enough to share. This was my first stop in Austin, TX because it was right across the street from my Airbnb, and it was great! I got the veggie burger, and unexpectedly, it was the best veggie burger I have gotten to date! It was crispy and crunchy! It tasted great! They had options for vegetarian and vegan friends, which is great! They also had options for our omnivore friends! They got the chili cheese fries option and the nachos to share and they really enjoyed it! Everyone was really nice and even though it was cold outside, it was all good vibes! I would definitely recommend for anyone who needs a quick bite to eat! It's super close to the University and walking distance! The menu and drinks had some variety and it was a great price! My husband and I decided to try this restaurant due to the fact that it's in the University of Texas area. We drove up and there is a parking lot at the side of the restaurant. There is also parking up front but there aren't many spots. We walked in the restaurant and were greeted at the counter by a nice guy. He gave us some menus to look at and then we placed our order and paid. He asked us where we were sitting and we said outside. This restaurant has a laid back atmosphere. The inside of the restaurant has pool tables, and dart boards. There was also some seating inside if you wanted to be indoors. They do have a selection of different types of beers for those who like to drink. After ordering we went out front and sat at some covered picnic tables. There were fans going which kept the area nice and cool. We waited for our food for about 40 minutes. Then a waitress brought out our food. My husband ordered the Classic Hamburger which is a burger that comes with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mustard and mayo. My husband chose to get it without tomatoes. I tried the burger and it was good. The bun was crisp and warm, the meat was good, and the lettuce, onion, mustard and mayo made for a good burger. The tortilla chips were crispy. The salsa was good. It wasn't spicy but it was flavorful. I ordered the chicken fajita tacos with cheese with tortilla chips on the side. The tortillas were soft and the fajita chicken was very flavorful. My husband and I shared the Super Nachos. These nachos have spicy refried beans, lettuce, tomato, onion and chicken. I was surprised at how good the nachos were. When they brought them out they were warm. The chips were crispy and the cheese was melted. The combination of the beans, cheese, and chicken made a good choice for an extra side to share. Overall this restaurant was a cool place to try. The ordering process was quick but we went when the restaurant wasn't busy. The service was okay and the food was good. read more

This is an awesome bar near campus that isn't too much of a college bar. The patio vibes are really good. The prices are great too. I usually get cider or share a pitcher of one of their many beers. I finally made it here after hearing how good the burgers are from my boys. The burgers remind me of the awesome drive- in burgers when I was a kid. The size is just right, I prefer a thin patty. Fries are delicious, and seasoned well. Lots of brew choices. Friendly service and relaxed environment. In door and covered patio sitting. Pool tables, darts, board games and good music. Stopped in here before a concert on campus. It's a dive bar with an old Austin vibe. There's some on-site parking but it's limited. They've got food here that I've heard is good, but I didn't get a chance to try this time. The staff were friendly and welcoming. It's a good spot to meet up with friends to grab a few beers, have some bar food (burgers and fries), listen to music, and play some pool and darts! The rare bar serving the UT crowd that I'm still happy to drink at after graduating. The students who frequent this bar are of a more low-key, grad-student variety, not a rowdy frat kind. The pool table and darts are always popular, but I prefer to sit outside on the large patio. It's funny that I'd give this place a glowing review considering I found a chunk of glove from someone in the kitchen staff in my fries one time. They handled it super well, giving me a free drink and replacement food, and honestly I'm just glad to know the people in the back are wearing gloves in the first place. A+ beer selection, delicious burgers for an incredibly cheap price and possibly the friendliest staff I've ever met at a bar (and I drink at a lot of bars). My fiancé is that obnoxious person who walks into a room and immediately tells everyone we're from out of town. Maybe that attributed to the friendliness but I won't complain. We were trying to see as much of Austin as we could in one day, but if we had more time we would have stayed for a few more beers. Great patio too. The second member of the grad school holy trinity (the other 2 being spiderhouse and taco joint). Its basically the perfect neighborhood bar. Basic wooden tables, a nice porch, 3 dart boards and 2 pool tables. You dont have to pay for darts, but you need collateral. They always have a great selection of beer, also they always have a nice deal on some type of beer they're trying to get rid of. Your dollar will go far at this place, especially during happy hour. In terms of atmosphere, its no frills. Its great for big groups and small groups and hanging out. The porch is enclosed with screens but it is a little hot in the summer. Its great in the fall and spring though. In terms of food, nothing is really stand out. But, it isnt bad either. Their burger is like the perfect backyard barbecue dad burger. Their fries are pretty good too but there jot artisanal. The cheese fries have a healthy amount of cheese. The nachos are fine too. The prices are a little high compared to the drinks. But, they're not unreasonable. A lot of researchers at the university have happy hours here, so it gets busy on fridays especially during the semester. People from the neighborhood come too so theres always a crowd. That being said, youll usually be able to get a dart board or a pool table if you want it. read more
