We definitely had a five star experience at Hattaways. We ordered the pimento cheese appetizer, the celery parm salad, and the duck and lamb entrees. All were delicious. The service was excellent, and they've done a nice job with sound deadening materials to keep the place from being too noisy when full. Service and ambiance were good but came on an off night I guess. Got a $70 tri tip ordered medium rare and took awhile to come out and got this. The waitress did ask if the kitchen could send it back to bring it up to temp but it's already cut and didn't want a pan fry refire. The other food was ok: broccolini was good but the oysters were so smoked and salty tasted like can of sardines, would prefer on the shell with a little smoke. The price was pretty steep so was a little disappointed because of all the good reviews. Others at the table also had their scallop dishes so salty they didn't finish. Before our appetizers hit the table, Hathaway's has earned a solid 5-star review! We were greeted with friendly staff at the door, and our waiter was helpful, knowledgeable, & thoughtfully asked if we had any food allergies! We started our meal with an old-Fashioned & Modern Love (a delicious, citrus-flavored vodka concoction) and the waiter gave us a sample of their amazing house-made pickles. At this point, we knew we were in for a tremendous meal! (They sell their pickles in quarts or pints to go!) Our "Larder" was the Pimento Cheese with crostini- yumm! Our entrees were: Chicken & Grits and Mushroom Braised Beef Cheeks. Oh boy- where do we start on the main part of our review?!?! Chick & grits: the chicken had a wonderful outside crunch but moist center! The sauce tasted as though the herbs had been freshly-picked for the garden! The jalapeño (not spicy) grit cake were cheesy & creamy and had a beautiful, buttery, golden crust! Beef cheeks: this was THE most juicy, tender, melt-in-your-mouth beef ever! The variety of mushrooms was incredible! It should be illegal to come to Walla Walla without eating here! The staff treat you as if you were eating at a 5-star restaurant (which you are!) and never let your water carafe or glasses run even remotely close to low! It's been a month since I ate there, but I'm still dreaming of the chicken & grits. It was our 1st time, and what a great way to try the menu for restaurant month. In a nutshell.. Salmon fritters (good, but I wish there were more)..celery salad, nice but I didn't see all the fuss from other reviews, hubby got shrimp risotto, nice presentation & he liked it, and I had the chicken& grits. I have never had chicken crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle like that. EVER. The mix of flavors & textures was off the chart with perfect grit cake and it was perfectly sweet and spicy and..oh my. I wanted the hubby to taste it, but I wanted every bite for myself. That was a 5 star dish by far. The portions were big, which was nice since I didn't want it to end. I was kinda 'meh' bored when I heard about the chefs choice ganache brownie& lemon meringue. BUT WHAT JUST HAPPENED WITH THAT BORING LEMON MERINGUE COOKIE... That bite was unbelievable. Chewy, with a crunch, and the perfect lemon..not too sweet. I would give that 5 stars as well. My new favorite restaurant! I appreciate two things when I eat out: spectacular food and attentive service. This place delivers on both. And if I've been at a restaurant 3 times in 2 weeks... it is definitely a winner in my book! I've come here for brunch once and dinner twice. Every drink and food item was perfection. Service was always stellar. Drinks: Our server/bartender, Chad, said his cocktails change weekly, depending on what he finds and plays with at the farmers' market. Food: I am a huge fan of the halibut that I've had it twice! It's served with grits and a nice BBQ butter. The chips and dips for an appetizer is great. They make their potato chips fresh daily. The dip is addicting-- the sweet Walla Walla onions really shine here! Service: Personable, happy, attentive staff. Ambience: Love it. Home-like, comfortable feels. Good, not extraordinary. Limited menu--southern vibe. Sadly, sat out front (which is not really a patio, but a sidewalk where you are staring right at the cars parked on the street). Flies galore--I know that it is summer, but this is the only patio that we visited with flies this thick. Inside seemed better, but, after a reservation made more than a month ago, we were directed outside to the cheap seats, so that they could ensure that a large group of 20 could sit together. Not our problem...Tri tip was $69 and just OK (six pieces) with a weird potato and kale mash.. Fresh pepper pasta and shrimp was the best dish of the evening. Oh, and the flies...Server, "there is no winning, they are really aggressive...". Flies on our wine, on our food, in our water. Skipped dessert to get away from...the flies. We showed up an hour early for our reservation and they were incredibly kind and accommodating (keep in mind this was a Saturday night at 6). I wish I could remember our server's name because she was fantastic. Totally clear that she was knowledgeable about every single dish and had great suggestions. I ordered the pork collar and my wife ordered the chicken dish. Both were delicious! My pork had a unique smoky flavor along with yummy potatoes. My wife loved her chicken! My fiancé and I came here for his birthday dinner and were seated at our table with a cute happy birthday note signed by several staff, a sweet touch! We both had the modern love cocktails with the pimento cheese appetizer, which were both really yummy!! He got the braised beef cheeks and I got the Dungeness crab. The braised beef cheeks were incredible and fell apart so nicely! I love crab, so I loved it! I do wish I would have been in the mood for one of their specialties though, but I was craving that crab! Our waitress, Emily was very attentive and suggested good wines for our dinners. We ended our meal with the heath bar bread pudding with butterscotch drizzle and a candle on top! This was our first dinner spot to try while visiting town and we were SO happy we came. Everything was awesome, from the vibes to the service to the food. Bartender's name was Chad and he gave us excellent service. He was friendly and knowledgeable about all the food and drinks. I ordered some type of magical rosemary gin drink and it was delicious enough that I got a second. My husband loved his bourbon drink too. They brought out an unexpected amuse-bouche to start, a crostini with queso fresco and a corn hash(?) or something on top. Really good, so this gave me high hopes for the rest of the meal! Then we ordered the baked oysters and the bbq chips. Ohhh my gosh those chips were incredible with pulled pork on top. Yummmm. Might have been my favorite thing, but that's a tough call. For entrees we ordered the clams and sausage, in a delicious broth served with crispy bread. We demolished it and Chad brought us extra bread. Also the halibut cheeks - portion seemed smaller than expected for the price, but it was absolutely worth it. Served with perfect grits and some smoked or sundried tomatoes. It was heavenly. Yum!! I came here for brunch before leaving for Seattle after a weekend of wine tasting in Walla Walla. It's a relatively new spot (2018), and I'm all for it. I LOVE Southern food, and ESPECIALLY in breakfast/brunch! The ambience is awesome, with cool lights, and it wasn't too busy at all. I had an elderflower mimosa (really yummy) and the smoked pork hash. Now I love me some smoked pork, but this was next level! There was a good mix of both fatty and leaner pieces (which I like). Pork belly is one of my guilty pleasures, but I honestly think it gives pretty much anything that boost of flavor. The dish was REALLY hot when upon arrival, so I warn you to be careful, especially with the potatoes. The sauce (chive?) is really delicious- I wonder what goes in it. There are some charred red peppers and onions mixed as well! I tried a little bit of the spaetzle scramble (a more unique dish), and it was tasty too. Went for my birthday is September and had a fabulous birthday dinner. Staff was friendly and service was fabulous. We started with an a amazing charcuterie board, which was AMAZING. My boyfriend and I shared the halibut cheeks and a risotto dish. Both were fabulous and pictures are included of both entrees. The drinks were also fabulously made. Several weeks ago we also got one of their Sunday dinners to go. It featured pork beans, pulled pork, and a endive salad. Coming home from a trip to that meal made coming home that much more easy! My review is only based on drinks and a little appetizer we got a taste of because we tried to both walking in and to get reservations here all weekend (this is based on an end of summer visit) and had no luck! The restaurant is tiny, so with covid the capacity was pretty limited. They must've known we were desperate one afternoon before their dinner rush though and let us have a table to get drinks as long as we were going to be less than 30 mins when they were expecting their reservation. The drinks were great and they even gave us a little jalapeño bread bite snack to try and it was delicious - I wanted another. Make sure to plan ahead if you want to eat here - I imagine even without covid that during a busy spring or summer weekend it can be hard to walk in just given the size of the place. read more

I got the Clams in Chowder and my wife got the shrimp risotto. Both were really well conceived and executed. The risotto was really flavorful and the shrimp in it were cooked perfectly. The whole clams in the chowder was a nice way to elevate what would otherwise be a bowl of soup! The staff here are friendly and best of all they seem genuine and happy to be here. We have been here for an hour and I still have no idea who is the owner or manager. We have had multiple people stop by and serve and or ask how our meal is going.
