Halibut cheeks over grits - avoid at all costs
Dave G.

A nice change from the usual fare in downtown- emphasizing comfort food. It mostly works with one big exception. Started with sweet corn beignets that were perfect - moist and hearty at the same time and a guilty pleasure. The sticky ribs were another winner - super tasty with a nice char, and sweet Asian sesame style sauce. The Cucumber Celery salad with poached figs was delightful- drizzled celery was a great compliment to the richness of the wine -poached figs. Where it went awry was the Halibut cheeks over grits (more of a creamy polenta). The cheeks were skillet charred - like no halibut cheek should ever be cooked, as this is a delicate part of the halibut that is easy to overcook. They also had a fishy taste that wrecked the otherwise creamy polenta. The crème fraish addition couldn't save it. It would've been far better with shrimp. Better to stick to the chicken, steaks, or pork chops that merit the missing star. I'd go so far as to recommend dropping the halibut cheeks from the menu as it doesn't work with the otherwise stellar options. Next time we'll try out the other mains. Service was terrific - friendly and prompt, and servers knew the menu and drinks well.

Carmel Bread Pudding

Beautiful restaurant with pretentious pricing. We strolled in to try their desserts after dinner down at another establishment, based on Yelp review. The hostess was friendly and sat us in their over flow seating area. We visited at 7:30 which is peak Friday night diner, I guess. Our sever was friendly, helpful and patient. We ordered a couple Amaro Nanino (after dinner drinks), a bread pudding and salmon puffs. The salmon puffs tasted very fishy and maybe not so fresh. Not sure where the fish is sourced. The bread was delicious and devoured quickly. The restaurant seems like a local favorite. This traveler is a little skeptical.

Wowza.... I had the best fish of my life at Hattaway's. The southern-style steelhead was absolutely incredible-perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and so fresh. The seasoning was spot on, and it melted in my mouth. The atmosphere was just as great, with friendly service and a cozy vibe. And if you're a fan of dessert, the Heath Bar bread pudding is a must-try- rich, indulgent, and the perfect way to end the meal. I can't recommend this place enough. I'll definitely be back!

Wine room

Wow, this place is amazing. I made a reservation for four for my wife's birthday and we were lucky enough to be seated in the wine room - a glassed off room where we got to play our own music over blue tooth. It's a working wine room where- servers came in and out to grab bottles when guests ordered them, which was fun to watch. We all had a cocktail and then shared a bottle of wine. The cocktails were all lovely and well-balanced and there was a great selection of Walla Walla wines. We started with the pimento for an appetizer - don't skip this - it was a taste bomb of flavor. I had the pork collar for my main which was awesome with the crispy rice. Everyone else had the chicken schnitzel which they thoroughly enjoyed. We split the bread pudding for dessert which was delicious - hearty and sweet without being cloying. Service was pleasant and prompt. Go!

AMBIANCE (5/5): We had a group of 7 people and got lucky enough to sit in their wine room! It's soundproof and such a cool vibe surrounded by all the best wines in the restaurant. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. SERVICE (4/5): Service was great! They were very attentive and brought out the food very quickly. FOOD (5/5): $18 STICKY RIBS: They were crispy on the outside & delicious! Felt Asian inspired? $19 ROASTED OYSTERS: AMAZING! I usually don't like hot oysters, but the crispy panko breadcrumbs & mayo aioli were a great combo. LOVED! $15 CELERY PARMESAN SALAD: sounded weird, but it was only HALF CELERY + HALF ARUGULA. Very refreshing. $29 SHRIMP FRIED RICE: one of the BEST fried rice I've had anywhere & I've had a lot! Trust me & order this. $30 UMAMI STEELHEAD: WOW! This was amazing! Highly recommend if you feel like a lighter option. $31 SPAETZLE & SUNDAY SAUCE: this was my least favorite dishes. It was pasta with ragu sauce pretty much. I'd pass on this one. MKT$ BONE-IN RIBEYE: this was good, but I thought the steelhead was better! Just depends what you're in the mood for. Shareable! Ours was 24 ounces. OVERALL (4.5/5): I was HIGHLY IMPRESSED with every single dish that came out here. I literally flew in the GEORGIA the same day I tried this restaurant, found out the owners are originally from Savanah, GA. Opened up this restaurant with a Southern flare and it was better than most of the restaurants I've eaten in Georgia. BRAVO! Highly recommend this spot. Please go here! Keep up the great work. I'll be back.

In a town known for its fine wines and small-town charm, Hattaway's on Alder brings something unexpected -- a taste of the South polished with Northwest finesse. Tucked just off Walla Walla's main drag, the restaurant hums with the low, steady confidence of a kitchen that knows exactly who it is and what it wants to say. The evening begins with a plate of Frog Hollow tomato salad, a vibrant ode to late summer - thick slices of sun-warmed heirloom tomatoes glistening with olive oil, finished with just enough salt and herbs to let their natural sweetness sing. Alongside, the sweet corn beignets arrive like little golden clouds, crisp on the outside and tender within, served with a touch of honey butter that walks the line between indulgent and irresistible. Salads here are far from an afterthought. The celery Parmesan salad is a masterclass in restraint - cool, crisp ribbons of celery tossed with shards of nutty cheese and a whisper of lemon, refreshing the palate between bites. For mains, the pan-seared halibut cheeks prove why this humble cut deserves star billing. Delicately caramelized, the fish yields to the fork with buttery softness, resting on a bed of seasonal vegetables that taste as though they were harvested that morning. The chicken & grits, meanwhile, is Southern comfort at its most elevated - perfectly fried chicken paired with creamy, stone-ground grits that soak up a savory jus with soulful abandon. And just when you think you can't manage another bite, dessert arrives: the Deschutes Black Butte Porter bread pudding. Dense, dark, and lush with malty richness, it's the kind of sweet ending that makes you linger long after the plates have been cleared -- a quiet, contemplative finish to a meal that feels deeply rooted yet refreshingly modern. At Hattaway's, hospitality isn't just a gesture; it's a rhythm -- one that invites you to slow down, savor, and be reminded that good food, when made with heart, always tells a story.

Dinner Menu

Our first dinner in Walla Walla based on Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. 7PM reservation on their street side patio to watch the sun go down. I mentioned my wife's birthday and there was a card on the table and a small glass of sparkling wine at the end of the dinner. Friendly responsive service. Generous wine pour of Chardonnay (on tap) for $10. Sticky ribs were delicious but wish there could have been 6 instead of 5 so we could evenly divide them. 1st 2 courses came quickly but it took a while to get our entrees. The definitely deserve all the good reviews they have received.

Sweet corn beignets - we already ate two : )

This is my first 3-star rating in quite a while. : ( The food was very good. The sweet corn beignets were so good. Light, not oily, with a wonderful slightly spicy honey butter. The Frog Hollow Tomato Salad had very tasty heirloom tomatoes with a pecan vinaigrette that I ate with a spoon before turning in the plate. The celery salad was unique and delicious. Our entree was the Citrus Glazed Sterlhead which was cooked to perfection on top of a really interesting green (herb) rice. Finally the Black Butte Porter Bread Pudding with a whisky glaze was hot, moist and delicious. BUT the portions were a little on the small side and the pacing was awful. Our salads arrived 95 minutes after we sat down, the entrees didn't arrive for another 30 minutes after that even though we asked our waiter to put those orders in early - while we were still waiting for the salads. The waiter apologized a couple of times but didn't do anything to address the situation until the end of the meal when he brought a champagne toast on the house for the "small hiccup" with our meal. Since we told him at the beginning of the meal that we weren't going to drink that night this added no value to the meal - we left the champagne untouched. While our waiter is not responsible for a slow kitchen, he could have reached out to the manager (who also should have been aware of the situation with the kitchen) and how it was affecting the diners.

Dinner here was such a wonderful way to wrap up a day of tasting in Walla Walla! The table ordered oysters and Brussels sprouts to start and the Brussels sprouts were so good that we ended up getting 3 more orders. They are pure magic! I got the shrimp fried rice and it was crunchy, flavorful, and incredible. I LOVED it! They had plenty of gluten free and pescatarian options on the menu, but my vegetarian friends mostly ordered starters. We wished the wine list would have been a bit more lengthy or impressive given the location of the restaurant, we had a hard time finding something we liked and our waitress didn't know what would pair with our meal. It feels like they could have had some pre selected wine pairings or something due to the nature of the restaurant. The service was okay! Our server was kind but did get a few things confused. We were a big group, so didn't really mind and were patient about this. I would totally come back for the food!

Beautiful spot to dine or have cocktails. We stopped in without a reservation and the seated us for some drinks and snacks. The service was fantastic and 5 stars. We ordered our drinks, had the snacks and enjoyed the vibe the place offers. One of the best in WW.

I give up. I've lived in Walla Walla for 2-1/4 years and I have been to Clarette's 5 times, spaced…read moreout to let new cooks take over, because I really want to like this place, but ... The 1st time I went, not long after I moved here, I got a burger at lunch time. I remember thinking it was meh. The meat was dry and the bun was stale. That's about all I remember. 2nd time, I got their version of Eggs Benedict. The eggs were overcooked (jammy-to-dry yolks) and the cheese sauce was terrible. 3rd time was the salmon filet, which was significantly undercooked in the middle. 4th time, I got the Country Biscuit Breakfast: gravy was terribly salty and the scrambled eggs were rubber. Tonight, it was the corned beef hash with two poached eggs and a Belgian waffle: the hash was more green pepper than meat or potatoes, the "poached" eggs were white hockey pucks with completely solid yolks and the Belgian waffle was a fluffy waffle-shaped pancake, no crispness on the outside at all. The waitstaff are fantastic and extremely nice. The setting is ... dated, but serviceable. The place is still better than the truly awful Denny's in town. I really hate ripping the place because the folks are so nice. I guess I'll sum it up this way: I've never had a truly bad meal at Clarette's, but I've never had a truly good meal there, either.
