You'll have a different experience depending on where you sit at this amazing bistro in downtown Walla Walla. The bar is spacious, but fills up during happy hour. The main dining room can be noisy, but the patio can be a peaceful place for dinner, depending on the weather. (Walla Walla evenings can be quite warm during the summer.) We were visiting for the weekend and this place was recommended by so many people. The downstairs ambiance was really nice, but we were seated upstairs, where it didn't have quite the same vibe. It was brighter, more open, and honestly felt a bit like the section where they send the "uncool" kids. Also, due to the extremely high ceiling height, it was impossibly loud. * Spicy pepperoni pizza was delicious, and everything tasted fresh--especially the mozzarella. * Carbonara was a standout. Classic Roman-style, with no cream, just a silky sauce from egg yolks and cheese. It was rich, cheesy, and smooth, but surprisingly didn't feel too heavy. * We got the tiramisu to go, and that was a huge miss for us--plus it was $12 for a tiny slice. Service was prompt, but it felt cold. Our server hardly smiled and came across as very robotic. Everything we ordered was really flavorful, delicious, and beautifully plated. Our server, Alyssa, was very sweet and helpful. The Gem Lettuce Salad was tasty and a good portion for two to split before the main course. The Polenta Filled Agnolotti blew our minds. Truly. SO good. We had a side of grilled asparagus with crispy garlic slices, which complemented our pasta meal perfectly. We arrived around 7:30 PM and were promptly seated in the courtyard .I really appreciated the variety of seating options: cozy booths if you want something intimate, open areas to relax in, more structured formal seating if that's your vibe, and of course, classic bar seating The staff was warm, offered thoughtful suggestions, and even made time for a little friendly chat when their schedule allowed. we started with some cocktails and the Focaccia which came highly recommended. Honestly I wasn't the biggest fan--it didn't feel very "focaccia-like" to me--but it was still good bread. The wine selection is extensive and rich and offers a lot of variety. Next we ordered the carbonara , some Hand rolled Pork and prosciutto meatballs and Burrata & Asparagus Panzanella. Everything tasted stellar and the portions were very good for sharing . There will always be outliers. It doesn't matter what context; the distribution curve is a long continuum. It is just so strange to me that Passatempo has been caught in the vortex of the Gaussian curve. Passatempo is so much more than a 4-star restaurant. If you read the reviews, you find that much of the discontent is with the timing of the experience at the tavern. However, Passatempo is at the pinnacle of the slow-food experiences. Think about the last time you dined at an osteria in Rome? I loved our dining experience. We had a lovely family evening seated in the courtyard. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. We had several different dishes, perhaps over-ordering a bit, and loved every bite. From the fresh made pasta to the pizza and salads, the food was spot on. The pork chop was lovely - moist, well seasoned, and cooked to perfection. In the spirit of the osteria tradition, Passatempo offers house-branded Vino da Tavola, table wines. Add to the mix the summer cocktail special (we had a Negroni special), and it's a great start to any meal. Honestly, this is a true destination kind of place. Don't be put off or misled by the seemingly low Yelp rating. Passatempo is a 4.8 kind of place. One thing - as you probably expect, the restaurant is busy. Make a reservation. This was our first time at Passatempo and we were pleasantly surprised. The ambiance was cozy and had a tavern atmosphere. The bartender went out of his way to fix a great crafted cocktail which was perfect. The pasta and pizza were great comfort foods and we ordered the salad special which had fresh flavors that were locally sourced. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The only negative mark is that we were given one of the smallest tables in the worst location in the restaurant even though we came early and the restaurant was mainly empty. That puta a damper on the entire experience . Don't understand why they don't give out best tables first come first served especially since we had reservations. Fabulous food, drink, and service! The ambiance was fantastic, but was unfortunately ruined by some very loud children. I recommend going on a weekend or later into the night. Our reservation was at 5:30 on a Monday and lots of kids were there. For appetizers I HIGHLY recommend the focaccia. The appetizer was also very well priced. We both had pasta dishes and they were delicious. You can't beat homemade pasta and sauce! The mixed drinks are on the pricey side but are some of the best I've ever had. We closed out the night with tiramisu and gelato (chocolate) and both were decadent. Our server was attentive and helpful. The food came out quick and I couldn't have asked any more of the staff. Truly great! A quick PSA: if you bring children into a restaurant, especially a very nice one please do your best to keep their noise at an appropriate level. Tonight we had a group of children yelling/screaming, banging dishes, and running around their table. We paid a lot of money to have dinner there tonight just like anyone else and I think we deserve to have a meal where we can talk to each other without yelling. My friend and I tried this place upon a recommendation. Reservations for Saturday are particularly hard to get - you'll want to book 2-3 weeks out if you want a reasonable dinner time, so we settled for a 8:15pm reservation booking last minute. We tried the Campari and orange sticky ribs, zozzona, and prosciutto and peaches pizza. The sticky ribs were an excellent starter - slightly crispy yet tender, with a balance of sweet and savory. There is subtle bitterness from the citrus and campari, but that whet our appetite of what's next. The zozzona is a fairly new addition to the menu, slightly similar to a carbonara except this is tomato sauce based. The sauce is very rich and the pasta is cooked to Al dente, my preferred texture in pasta. Don't be fooled that it looks so tiny - they bunch it up tightly and the richness made this small plate very filling. The pizza was good - the dough is lightly seasoned and I am a fan of the peaches bringing some sweetness to a very hearty and savory dish. The arugula also helped balance out the fattier prosciutto and cheese. Service is decent - water was brought out promptly and we were checked on a few times to ensure we have everything. The waiter acknowledged a slight dip in service as a result of large parties that were seated before us. A culmination of reasons why it's not a 5 star experience: while we showed up 45 min early for the reservation, there were lots of empty tables yet they made us wait 30 minutes before they seat us. Even if we need to wait longer for food, that is okay since we acknowledge the reservation time, maybe just a psychological factor of waiting outside vs getting seated. Also, the pizza was not cut properly so we had to spend additional effort of cut them in proper slices. The food took incredibly long - almost an hour - though the server did apologize that is because of a large group before us. read more

We had reservations for 8:30 but our table wasn't ready until about 8:40. The host tried to seat us but the realized the table wasn't reset yet. We ordered the burrata caprese as an appetizer but it was taking a while to come out. The server comped our first round of drinks, which was appreciated. The Two Step cocktail we ordered was super interesting with the savory spices! Once the burrata arrived, it tasted great! I loved the crusty bread throughout the dish! Our main course didn't come out until 9:30, an hour after we had arrived. I wasn't a huge fan of the Alla Gricia but that was a personal problem, not the restaurant's. My girlfriend, who is much more discerning about pasta, said it was great in her opinion, so I won't knock the restaurant for that. My girlfriend had the Zozzana and that tasted even better than mine! Maybe I just like red sauce more. For dessert, we had the tiramisu which was boozy and delicious with amaretto! Our server did not steer us wrong in her recommendation. Overall, service was friendly and professional. Our server even made some recommendations for other places to check out around town. One more nitpick - The blue and brown table chairs were small and uncomfortable. I would return and recommend this place but i would try something else on the menu. The service, food, and drinks were good overall but it lacked some attention to detail to really make it 5 stars. If you check it out, be sure to make reservations!
