We saw this place on Check Please and thought it looked great. The place was small and casual but nice. The service was very good. The food on the other hand was just fair. We ordered the Beef Chow Fun and Pork Sheng Jian Bow. The beef came first. The noodles were overcooked and the beef was fair but sparse. Especially $19. It could have used a bit more flavor as well. It was mostly oil and soy. It was tender and not fatty or stringy. The bao. They looked wonderful on the plate. The bao bread was actually the best part of the Bao. The meat filling was pretty bland and dry. Most good Bao while not juicy like a dumpling or soup dumpling are at least moist, tender and have a bit of juice. The value. $35 before tax and tip puts this very low on my value meter. Close to $45 all in could get 3 people a pretty good lunch special at most Chinese restaurants in town.
Loved it! Came here with a larger group, about 8 of us so we were seated at the tables outside the restaurant. The inside isn't big so we were happy they were able to accommodate us somewhere so we could sit together. The food came out promptly and was so good! The XLB was so flavorful. The portions and prices were also pretty good. They continued to check on us and refilled our waters throughout the service. I would highly recommend!
This is an awesome spot to get happy with bao, soup dumplings, and more. This location is within Mekong Plaza, a little Mecca of Asian food in Mesa. It's a very small place so at busy times you may have to wait for a table. Yet, the wait is worth it. You can also order to go and order large larger quantities of their product, frozen to take with you and make it home. We come to this place as often as we can, even though we live quite a distance away.
Take out review! I ordered via DoorDash though you can order in front of their shop on the iPad. I got the chicken dumplings and the braised pork rice. Chicken dumplings: Dry and chewy. Not good. Wouldn't recommend. Braised pork rice: The flavor was good and the pork was tender but wish they gave a little bigger portion of rice and meat. The other reason I give it 2 stars is because of the lack of care when it came to packaging the order. They included no utensils and no sauce for the dumplings. Not only that, they didn't wrap it tight so the sauce of the pork rice spilled all over the bag when I opened it up. Maybe you'll have a better dine in experience.
Saw some videos about Happy Bao's on social media and found ourselves in the area so we stopped in to try it out. Menu is massive. Everything sounded amazing. Tried the bar bun combo, wontons in spicy chili oil and the hot and sour noodle soup. Only regret was that we couldn't try more. Spice levels were on point. Flavor was exceptional. Large portions. Zero complaints!
Honestly not sure what the hype is about this place. Overall the food was meh and that doesn't say much. We stopped in and placed an order to go so we could sit at the food court. They don't allow outside drinks and we had our boba teas with us. We tried their spicy chili dumplings, chicken xiao long bao and beef chow fun. The spicy chili dumplings were all spice and no flavor. The filling inside lacked any depth to it, all I tasted was pork. Definitely need to up their game and include some flavor in their meats. The chicken xiao long bao were decent soup dumplings. The chicken had more flavor and the broth was tasty. Definitely wasn't the best I have had, but not the worst. The beef chow fun was inedible. Not sure what they put in it or how it's cooked, but it had a weird smell to it. It was so off putting and I could smell it through the take out bag. Couldn't put my finger on the cause, but it ruined the dish. My wife also felt the beef was a cheap cut, you could tell from the texture.
Lunch on a busy Saturday afternoon. The place was very crowded, but everything moved quickly. We sat outside (which is a table inside the mall, but outside the restaurant itself). The menu has plenty of options from dumplings to bao to rice to veggies. We opted from a variety of place of bao, Chinese broccoli, and Honey ribs. All the dishes were really good! The bao are chewy on the top and crispy on the bottom. The honey ribs were delicious! Yes, they are small pieces of rib with bones, but the bones are easily removed. I actually dipped my bao dough in the remaining honey rib sauce. So good! The Chinese broccoli was a nice offset to the meat of the other dishes. There are a variety of sauces you can get on the veggies. Spicy garlic was very good. N*joy!
Happy Baos truly make me happy! They're my family's go-to for delicious baos and authentic Chinese food, and they've never let us down. Over the past few years, we've tried several different items and have enjoyed everything, but our favorites are XLB, vegetable shen jian bao, and Singapore rice noodle. The food is always super tasty and fresh. The portions are big enough to share, and the prices won't break the bank. They also have combo deals for two, four, or more people, which are a great deal if you're not too picky! Happy Baos is located inside Mekong Plaza near the food court. The space is cozy, but there's ample seating inside and outside of their space, but fills up quickly. They now have a device outside for placing to-go orders, making it more convenient to get your hands on their delicious baos!
Haven't been here in awhile and decided to meet up with a friend for a late lunch. We order the Xia Long baos, beef chow fun and spicy wontons. We were immediately greeted by a nice gentleman. Then a friendly & professional lady brought our water and took our order. This has always been a small store front with a few tables just outside the store front. Everything was clean and we arrived just in time to get a table inside. Our food was prepared, cooked and seasoned well. I would definitely return.
This spot is so delicious I can see why it went viral. You can absolutely tell the time and quality they put into their food. Happy Bao's is located in the Mekong Plaza which is basically a mall. They have all kinds of cool shops and places to eat along with a huge grocery store. We visited on a Wednesday night about 630pm and were able to get a table right away. However it is a small restaurant and very popular. While we were there a line formed outside for those waiting to be seated. It's worth the wait! Their food is very authentic and fresh. The quality is apparent and the bao's were a work of delicious art. I personally ordered the Pork Wonton Noodle and it was amazing. The broth was super flavorful and the wontons were perfect. I also tasted the Egg Fried Rice, which was some of the best I ever had. I'll definitely be returning to Happy Bao and would like to try some of the other spots in Mekong Plaza!
First time. This restaurant was in a asian area of Mesa from what we saw. Inside was small. We got the Xiao Long Bao, Dan Dan, and House Fried Rice. Everything was very good. Thank you for the reply, Matthew. We went back tonight to check out our once beloved spicy beef noodle soup to see if it was updated to how it was originally over the past year. Unfortunately, it fell short again and may have been worse than last time. There was a positive though, and I could tell some effort was made to correct it. The positive was that the broth seemed to be back to being made more close to how it was before. It's still not all the way there. I'm happy to send you a pic from earlier last year where you can even see the fatty bubbles in the broth and tell just from the pic how good the broth was. It definitely had more depth and even looked better this time though than the last 2 visits. But unfortunately it was basically ruined tonight because it came out just warm and not hot at all. It used to always be really hot and that is what helped it be great. You just can't catch any heat or spice when it is lukewarm. I prefer the less depth of last time's broth and it being hot rather than this corrected broth that is only warm. The good news is that this can be easily addressed. The last thing I want to say is that last time was skimpy on the beef. I will say I think you might have tried to address that because there was way more of what I thought was beef at first. However, it was almost all the fatty or collagen part and it is not even edible. By the time we took it out of the soup, there was actually less edible beef than last time. It might as well have been called Spicy Tendon Soup, not Spicy Beef. We had to complain to the lady and she brought us out a side bowl of edible beef. The soup used to have a lot of actual beef and only a small portion of this tendon stuff. I have attached a picture below for you to see for yourself. I also saw a review from Donna from 6 days ago with the same issue, and I have noticed recent pictures as well with a lot of the chewy stuff. As I mentioned, it was opposite before with more beef and a smaller portion of the tendon. One last positive also is that a bit more bok choy was added it seems like. Overall me and my fiance were super disappointed tonight. As I mentioned, it was the best beef noodle soup in AZ - always super hot, great flavorful broth, and plenty of edible beef before the last 3 visits. And we drive 35 min from North Phx to eat it. I never write this long of a review, but I write in hopes that you can correct it. The change in the quality happened around the time I noticed the Korean gal left that was running the place and new staff working. Not sure what happened. We might could come back and give it one more chance next month, but if it is the same as the last 3 visits, I would sadly not come back again. Thanks. read more

This was my second time coming here and honestly it was okay. I got the seafood Xiao Long Baos and they were alright. Previous I got the Sheng Jian Bao combo and I had the same feelings. They were good but it's not personally somewhere I would choose if my friends didn't want to go so much. While I'm glad they are getting plenty of service and staying busy, during our lunch besides getting our order taken and our food getting dropped off our server didn't check on us at all and even left half way through. Our server after we were able to pay with but through the lunch we never got refills of our water which were empty almost the whole time. My first time going though, the service was much better so maybe it was just a off day. read more

I have been waiting forever to finally eat here and my time came! I have heard amazing thing about happy baos and they did not disappoint! Ordering was super fast and easy. The employees were nice and efficient. The restaurant is in an in order strip mall so sitting is limited and there are wait times so plan accordingly. The menus have pictures of all of their items which is super helpful! Baos are one of my favorite meals and this place did not disappoint! We got the combination platter which had veggies, pork and chicken baos. The dough was super soft and a nice crunch on the bottom with sesame seeds. Then my boyfriend and I shared some bacon fried rice, which was amazing. The bacon was crispy and super flavorful. For dessert we got steamed taro buns, which was the perfect end to our meal. My friends got the dumpling combination and I was able to try one and they were very good! I want to come back so I can try more of their baos and dumplings! read more

Went in for tomato egg noodle that I saw online then came out with tomato egg noodle, Lu ro fan, and dessert combo baos. Tomato egg noodle is good as expected but a bit sweet. Lu ro fan, braised pork belly with egg over rice is so delicious. The meat is so tender. This dish is not too salty and not too fatty. I want more! The dessert combo baos are the best! The red bean bao is tasty and the taro bao is to die for. They taste so good and I could not go back to eat the frozen ones nor the ones from other restaurants. I want more! They are really busy. I think because they got several stories on social media at that time. They told me when to come back to pick up the food so I went to shop at other stores within the complex. read more

I've heard so many positive things about this place and finally was in the area so I had to stop by. Unfortunately I had to get my order to go since I had just eaten a 3 course meal. I ordered the 20 piece dumpling combo, and though I ate it 4 hrs later, it was still really good. I can't wait to stop by again and sit down and eat it fresh. Great! Decent pan fried baos (sheng jian bao) Dropped by for lunch on Saturday afternoon. This place was slammed! Super busy but easily joined the waitlist on site and got a text that our table was ready in about 15 mins. Ordering was easy, QR code on the table led to an ordering website where we were able to place our orders and they delivered the first order within 5 minutes! Dan Dan noodles - was okay, noodles well made, I thought it wasn't spicy enough, so maybe flavored for local taste rather than authentic- I added spicy chili oil and it enhanced the taste. Shanghai buns (pork) - very good, wrapping is nice and thin, soupy, taste great Sheng jian bao - very tasty, crispy bottom. Hot and some juice when you bite into it. Spicy wontons - just okay. While not initially impressed, my 2nd visit to Happy Bao has been quite redeeming. I think I was harsh the first time around since I had their soup dumplings and I felt I had had much better elsewhere. But this visit I tried other menu items and they were quite tasty. Their regular dumplings were great. While my fiance felt their wrapper was a little too thick, I thought it was fine. My fiancés beef noodle soup was super flavorful and the beef really tender and good. My lamb noodle soup had a great flavor but I wish it was more concentrated. It tasted as though it was somewhat watered down. Overall very satisfying food! read more

4.5 Stars. I came into Happy Bao's on a Friday night. I opted to get my food to go since it was busy & they had a 20 minute wait. The place seemed very popular & it was inviting. All the team members I spoke with were really nice. I ordered the Beef Chow Fun & the Pork & Chive Dumplings. The dumplings were really good & tasted fresh. The Beef Chow Fun was a large portion, had a good consistency & a decent amount of beef but it was lacking flavor a bit though & if I would dined in I would have asked for more sauce to add to it's flavor. As soon as my fam and I landed in Phoenix, I wanted to jump straight to Happy Bao's for lunch. I was craving some comfort food, and I wanted something soothing after our flight from SFO. I didn't realize that Happy Bao's was situated unassumedly inside a shopping plaza in Downtown Mesa. Though the storefront felt rather uninviting (and my hanger got the better of me when our server refused to seat us until she saw all our party members present), the food did NOT disappoint. Being spoiled by all the Asian food in SF, my expectations were blown beyond proportion. The noodle soup dishes we ordered, while simple, were full of flavor. The servings were also generous. (The pork wontons that came with my wonton seafood noodle soup were especially meaty!) I highly recommend Happy Bao's, like most of the other Yelpers here. From the friendly and quick atmosphere to the delicious dumplings, wontons, bok choy, and bao buns this place will see me again! Well, where do I start? First of all, big shoutout to my niece Bella for tipping me off to this magical spot!! I've been coming to the Mekong Market and bakeries for the past 3ish years now, and I just noticed this place, which is kinda sad as I'm about to embark on a cross country move next month. Well, I'm so glad I made time for a visit. I'll start with the size of the restaurant, this is a smaller yet functional place to enjoy your meal. The servers are constantly busy, but will greet you as soon as they can. There are a couple of tables outside, as well as a larger elevated table for larger groups. The Food: I chose the Beef Noodle Soup and the Signature dumplings wow!! The beef broth was perfection, the broth was savory bursting with that beef taste, I paired it with the dumplings making it a most delicious meal. Plenty of parking outside as well. I want to try everything on the menu, which means I'll be heading back before I leave Arizona. Service is fairly quick, they do come around often to fill your water cup. My wife and I came for an early dinner and were impressed by the great food. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, so we ended up ordering four dishes: Xiao Long Bao, Spicy Beef Noodle (similar to Vietnamese Bun Bo Hue), Chilli Dumplings, and Roujiamo. So went for lunch with high expectations and was not disappointed - we ordered the Pork Sheng Jian Bao and Dumpling sampler.First the aroma was a pure delight then biting into the light airy Bao flavorful Boa was pure bliss. Next came the Dumpling sampler platter and all we could do was savor each tasty bite - all flavors were light airy filled with perfect amount of mixture - also recommend getting your own house chilli sauce because one was not enough for 2 it was that good - cannot wait to go back and try more items in their menu - the perfect Friday fun - the wait staff was help ful and attentive as well read more

I've been waiting a long time to try this place and I'm so happy I did! I was lucky and arrived right before the last table was taken and right before a waitlist was started. I was quickly seated and given water, utensils, and sauces. I ordered the spicy wonton dumplings and the mixed bao. The spicy wontons came out first. I am giving this place 4 stars because they were slightly cold and not as spicy as I expected even when adding extra chili. The Baos were 2 chicken, 2 pork, and 2 veggie. All of them were warm and so good! I thought I was pretty skilled with chopsticks until I encountered these lol they are a great size. Surprisingly, the veggie one was my favorite! This place is inside of a plaza with lots of other restaurants but people were flocking here. After tasting the bao, I can see why! The shop is small but they have some seating outside too. read more

I've been to Happy Bao several times before and it's one of my favorite places to take people when they come to town and they always love it. Today was no different! I took my friend and her husband and both loved it. We each ordered a different kind of boa bun and shared them, all were delicious! We also got a couple different noodle dishes to share and they were just as good as the buns. Our favorite thing to get there is the sweet custard buns for dessert. I know you'll be stuffed after eating the meal but trust me, you have to save some room for these! The service was really fast and friendly. The restaurant has a hole in the wall vibe and it's not very big and always busy but they always seem to be able to get us seated pretty quickly somehow. Me and my twin love to go out to eat together and we decided on this little spot that is located in a small mall with other little restaurants. I'm so happy we chose this place. We both ordered the beef noodles and dumplings with pork and veggies with a chili sauce to dip in, soo good! Only recommendation I would say is just cook the beef in a little longer so it can be a little more tender for the noodles. The waiters were very attentive and never sat in one place. They continuously moved around and so if we needed anything, if one wasn't there another was & ready to help! I would recommend this place and is definitely worth the hype read more

Wow, so glad I came across this place when I was visiting Phoenix! Was craving Xiao Long Bao and this place really delivered on taste and quality! This place may be small, have limited seating, and be the definition of a hole in a wall; but I left feeling satisfied. The Xiao Long Bao and nice thin skins that held all of the wonderful soup and flavor. The Pan Fried Baos had that nice crispy bottom but fluffy tops. The Lamb Dumplings were also really unique, with that distinctive lamb flavor that was well complemented by the spices and seasoning that they used. If you come when they are busy, expect service to be a bit slow. But even then, I still think it was worth it and would definitely want to come back again next time! :) read more

I tried this wonderful restaurant recently and came back for some more happy bao goodness. I have no idea what this dish is but it was awesome. It had shrimp, noodles, in a curry type sauce. This dish was unlike anything I've had before and I could eat it every week. The taste is savory and full of flavor with a large portion to last several meals (possibly).
