My husband and I ordered jajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), tangsuyuk (fried pork with sweet and sour sauce), and jjampong (spicy noodle soup with seafood). Jajangmyeon is one of my favorite type of noodles, and whenever you order jajangmyeon, you also have to order tangsuyuk. It's crispy, crunchy, and the batter is not too thick. With the sauce, you can either dip it in or pour it all over. Inside the jjampong, there's a bunch of seafood and other ingredients. You get shrimp, mussels, octopus, squid, broccoli, peppers, and of course, the noodles. Such a savory, hearty, and comforting meal. Hainan is great for a quick and casual meal. The space is bigger than it looks, as there is a dining room on the side by the restrooms and a separate dining room in the back, which could be good for large parties. We were seated on the back as the tables in the front were filled. The service was friendly and they came by a few times to refill tea. Thick Black Bean Sauce Noodles (A4 - Jjajangmien) is made with a fresh sauce, so definitely recommend. It had ots of sauce and onions. There are bits of pork and zucchini as well. The noodles are cooked well and bouncy. Fried Pork with Sweet Sour Sauce (C1)had a great crisp. The sauce was more sweet than sour but I liked that balance. It is very thick but a little goes a long way. (Spicy) Noodle Soup with Seafood and Beef Brisket (A14) had the right kick to it. The brisket was a tad bit overcooked, probably from sitting in the broth. Will try it without the brisket next time. The noodles are the same as in the Jjajangmien. The banchan (onions, pickled radish, kimchi), the chunjang (?) and other seasonings, and the yogurt drink at the end were great touches. The pricing is also pretty good for the portion sizes. My friend and I went to Hainan around 12:30pm on a Sunday. It was decently busy, but we were able to get a table without a wait. It's a bit of a walk from Main Street, so I would recommend catching a bus, especially in the cold weather! The ambiance is casual, with the menu items posted up around the restaurant. For food, it comes down to preference. We each ordered a jjajangmyeon ($11.98 - I could've sworn the menu said $9.99, but that may be a lunch special price?) and a medium tangsuyuk to split ($23.99). Pricing is fair, and it is still cheaper than Manhattan prices. I was a bit off-put by the orange-colored noodles in the jjajangmyeon, but they had a nice silky texture. The sauce was where the dish lost me. I don't know what it is, but it tasted almost like there was a tomato component in the sauce, and the sweet black-bean flavor was not coming through to me. The tangsuyuk was fried well and the coating had a nice texture. However, the meat itself was flavorless and absolutely needed the sauce. Service was mixed, though everyone was courteous. The food came quickly, and I was granted more kimchi when I asked (this kimchi was REALLY good!). However, you have to ask for most things (water, water refill, kimchi refill, etc.). I'm not super put-off by this, since that's how it is in Korea, so just be aware of it. It remains a mystery to me how the name "Hainan" was selected for this above-average Koreanized-Chinese restaurant in eastern Flushing. There is no relation between the food served here and the beachy island in Southern China. Perhaps it is similar to the way the word "Manchurian" is used to evoke distant lands in Indo-Chinese food, which I can assure you has no culinary relationship with Dongbei cooking. The tofu with vegetables here was one of the best tofu dishes I've had recently. The tofu was perfectly fried with a starchy outer layer and a perfectly custardy interior, served in a thickened gravy. I would come back for this alone. I was less a fan of the jjajjangmyeon. I prefer when restaurants use a mix of corn starch and water to create a thicker sauce from the jjajjang, but there was very little gravy here, and as a result it was hard to impart much flavor upon the noodles. read more

TLDR: Good local spot in the Broadway Flushing area for Korean-Chinese. Very old school flavor and also some tough to find items. Can't go wrong with the jjampong or jajangmyun. I think they've been around for awhile but I never got a chance to try until recently. I found this place because ever since I had jjampong (seafood noodle soup) with beef brisket in Korea - I have been chasing that flavor. So when I saw Hainan had this, I needed to try. The broth was flavorful, it was not too greasy and there was a good amount of seafood. We also tried the spicy jajangmyun which had a nice wok-fried flavor and real spice. Fried dumplings were tasty and the so was the sweet/sour pork. They put the sauce on the side which I prefer - so the coating doesn't get soggy. I was craving jjajangmyun, jjamppong, and tangsuyuk, so my friend recommended that we come try Hainan since it was in the area. We ordered the jjajangmyun (where my friend specified to the waiter to make the jjajang sauce fresh), the sweet rice tansuyuk (pork), and jjamppong. I think the fresh sauce and onions elevated the taste of the jjajangmyun. The tansuyuk was crispy, mochi-like, and airy at the same time. The sauce on the side paired perfectly, and had bits of veggies inside, so you can get a different experience with each bite. The jjamppong was good, but nothing special. Not sure why my husband picked this place since it's completely out of our way but I am so glad he did! There was a special going on for jjajangmyeon for $5.99 when the usual price is 9.99. We barely looked at the menu and instead looked at the pictures of specials around and ordered those instead. We got two peach iced teas, fried mandoo, jjajangmyeon, spicy beef soup with rice and the sweet and sour fried pork. The iced teas were very nice and refreshing but a tad too sweet. It definitely has a yogurt drink in it. The mandoo was basic, nothing to rave about. jjajangmyeon came in a big bowl and enough for 2 people or one very hungry person. The black bean sauce was thick and sweet and paired with the chewy noodles perfectly. The spicy beef soup was surprising and I wish they had said it somewhere that it is seafood based and not beef based. I am not allergic to shellfish but if someone was, it would not be a pleasant experience. The star of the whole dinner was the sweet and sour pork. The pieces were big and perfectly fried without too much batter. The sauce looked very thick but it didn't taste like it and it was not overly sweet. We ordered the medium size and at first it looked like a huge portion but we ate most of it. The server was very pleasant and made approving comments on the food we ordered. The most delicious Korean Chinese food in Queens! I love a good jajangmyeon and jjampong so I had to try this spot. It was my first time going and I will definitely be back! Everything the servers and owners recommended were incredible. My family has Korean Chinese food pretty regularly but usually have our go to orders. We got to try so many new dishes and I think we will have to add these to our go to order. Some of my regular favorites are the Fried Pork w/ Sweet and Sour Sauce, Stir-Fried Clams with Veggies and Noodles, and Jajangmyeon. First time and wanted to see if their jjajangmyeon 짜장면 is legit. My usual go to place has been joonggookjib 중국집. I honestly think this place jjajangmyeon is better altho it's a bit too salty. But nice consistency of texture and not too watery either. I've asked for a pair of scissors to cut so feel free to ask and cut the noodles. Restaurant is clean and service was great. I originally came in because of their banner listing Jjangmyun for $5.99 as their grand opening deal. But when I actually sat down and looked at their menu, we decided to go with their lunch special. I came in on a weekday around 1:30pm. There was surprisingly a decent amount of people already seated (not super full, but not empty). My friend and I were immediately attracted by their lunch special menu. The lunch special combos offered 4 different things on one huge plate for a fairly good price. I was sold. In the end, i opted for combo #4. The lunch special combo is very satisfying. I got try to their jjangmyun, the salad, 1 piece of fried dumpling and the garlic chicken (kang poong gi). They give a decent amount of chicken and noddles. To my surprise, I felt kind of bloated after eating everything. One dish you must try here is the oyster-broth white jjampong!! This dish is to die for so I recommend everyone to try it. Very thick, hearty and the aroma of oyster, seafood combined with variety of vegetables. Perfect! They also have fried chicken dish that comes with salad and special sweet and sour sauce(yuringi), fried shrimp with creamy white sauce and their leek/beef japchae..I love them all. So scrumptious!! Had a craving for Korean Chinese food, and a brief search on Yelp showed that there were not too many options available for outdoor dining. Most restaurants were offering delivery only, but Hainan came through. Don't be deceived by their street side storefront - their outdoor dining is set up in the back, which the host will take you to via a walk through their indoor seating and their kitchen (which thankfully looked nice and clean). The outdoor seating has a modest set up, four picnic style tables under a large tarp tent, but provided enough insulation for you to take off your winter coat and eat comfortably. We ordered a little bit of everything - the regular and spicy Jajangmyun, Tangsuyuk and Mapo Tofu. Everything was up to expectations, and exactly how I imagined it to taste whenever I got a craving watching Korean dramas. One of my friends I went with is Korean, and he said that it was the most authentic Korean Chinese food he's had in New York. Service was quick and not in your face, always around to refill your barley tea and not judgmental at all when we ordered way too much soju. I believe it was about $20 for the whole dish. When you first bite into it, there is a juicy crunch to it with a lemon flavor. I would recommend eating it with rice though, as the fried part can get a little overwhelming standalone. Every dish here was on the pricier side on the menu, with everything averaging around ~15-20 for your entrees. Alas I tried it again and I was disappointed yet again. The chapssal tang soo yook was not so chapssal-y. And the jjajangmyun was a bit greasy. One of the biggest downfall is the fact that they don't use THE best kimchi (Hansol) which they sell across the street like dabin used to. I refuse to believe it's the same chef.
