I think I'm done with Gracies, which makes me sad because I REALLY like the food. But their service is just the worst. And there always seems to be a problem with my food. Like today, it was not very busy. Our order was taken pretty quickly, our food came pretty quickly. Then, we never saw our waiter again. And my bacon cheddar pulled pork sandwich was missing the bacon, which just made me sad. But I couldn't even complain about it, because our waiter never came back. So we waited. Another girl came to bring us our bill, and when I went to pay, told them my bacon wasn't on my sandwich. I basically got a "Oh, too bad. I'd charge you for the other pulled pork sandwich but this one is cheaper anyway." That's it. Pretty disappointing. Also, the guy at the table behind us accidentally spilled his whole drink on the way out. No biggie, normally. But our waiter said they didn't have a bus boy, so out whole lunch I had to sit there and watch it drip, drip, drip. Eh, weird. read more

My number one BBQ spot in Vallejo! The owner is so nice and most of the staff is pretty nice as well! Usually on Friday and Saturday nights they have a live band and boy do they get down! The thing I used to love so much about this place is that I lived a couple of blocks from it, but now that I have moved back into my parnets house its sooooooo far away! This is a tough one. It's decent BBQ but doesnt even come close to a place like E&J so I cant give more than 3 stars. I've avoided coming here because I visited years and years ago when they had the taco like truck set up on Springs Road. I remember clearly the sides tasting VERY store bought. Safeway brand potato salad and canned Pork and Beans even! Here is a more recent run down tho: -Meat was pretty damn good and so was the sauce -Sides still disappointing, same reasons!!! Plus they had no green beans?!!? -Sweet Iced Tea??? Be still my heart. Wow. Gracie's did not disappoint. We were greeted quickly, staff was friendly, and food came SO fast. The food. Fantastic. I had the half order of baby back ribs, mac and cheese, and coleslaw with a huge jar of swamp juice. Everything was perfect. I didn't really like the cornbread, but that didn't matter. The food here is killer. I'm incredibly stuffed and happy. Husband got the chicken. I don't usually order chicken at restaurants because it doesn't excite me, but the chicken was juicy and flavorful. I can't say I am impressed at all with this place. First. Terrible service. We saw our waiter three times total. Once when we flagged him down to take our order. Second when we got our food. Third when he brought us the check - we had to take it up to the counter to pay as he never returned. The food is nothing you couldn't do at home with some effort. I had just gone to a BBQ the prior week where friends cooked up some awesome ribs and chicken. Those were more flavorful and tender than Gracie's. A telling event was when we were trying to walk up to the front and pay. The server tried to come through the passage way with arms full of plates of food. She nearly bowled us over and clearly wasn't going to let us pass first. I'm all for stepping aside for someone working but there is a general lack of friendliness to the customer. With the very high prices you pay to eat here, you should get better service and better flavor. On the plus side, the portions are huge so at least you get the quantity side of the equation. I like BBQ but this time it was just okay. I had the sausage with corn bread, green beans, and potato salad. My boyfriend had the brisket with a salad. He liked his.. I shouldn't have gotten the sausage. Corn bread was REALLY dry, green beans were decent but obviously canned (fresh would taste better and they could get them from the Farmers Mkt), and potato salad was really good! :) Sausage was extremely greasy and oozed red nasty oil from it. Last minute meal before closing let's see how this turns out... I got my food in less than 15 minutes to go and I love this place but their food tastes the same and I don't see any improvement or changes of their food. When I first tasted the ribs about a year ago, I thought they were very delicious. Just the right amount smoke and seasonings. I went back to get a whole rack. Yum. Recently I had their chicken, hot links and ribs. All were missing something. Though the chicken thighs and legs had a nice smokiness, the meat was very bland and dry. Though the surface was a beautifully caramelized mahogany, it was bland also. Blah! The hot links looked totally amazing. They turned out to be mealy unlike any quality sausage I have ever eaten and they tasted old, on the verge of rancid. The slight gag kind of rancid. I could not eat anymore. The ribs looked amazing with the sauce. They were meaty, but again bland. Someone is holding back the salt and spices folks. Also the meat needed more cooking. I like my rib meat to still be attached to the bone, but these seemed under cooked, tough and sinewy. The fat was not rendered enough. Someone rushed the cooking on these. A major let down. Friendly staff. Tasty bbq sauce. Can't justify paying good money for bland, rancid, under cooked food. Something went wrong. Terribly wrong. Ok so this place is ok but its NOT a 5 star resturant and i would have gave them 3 stars but i noticed everyone was over rating it so to even it out im going to under Rate it at 2 stars..If the place had more realistic reviews i would have rated it 3 stars.. Ok now for the food .....Yes it takes good.....does it taste great?? id say no not great just good......... Price is TOO HIGH if it was cheaper then id say the food taste great but for the price its only good not great..... I've been here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'm from the south and have opinions about BBQ. Their food is solid, sometimes on the dry side, but well seasoned. This is our favorite place in Vallejo for sure but to be fair there's not really any where to eat in Vallejo besides chain restaurants and fast food. A complaint about the sides: They don't have baked beans or mac and cheese unless its a special. Which is disappointing because I don't think beans and rice count as quintessential BBQ grub. Tea and lemonade are good. Sauce does just fine and sort of has to make up for the dryness. Overall, if your in Vallejo, I recommend this spot. Otherwise check out Smoke in Berkeley. Catering: I have a problem with the guy that runs catering however. He was unprofessional and hard to communicate with. He never followed through with sending us a menu when their site was down (3 of us called and not one menu sent). It wasn't a totally unpleasant experience just sort of frustrating and I felt like he didn't want to be very accommodating. It was enough to make use give up on the catering idea. read more

Never been disappointed! This place has delicious bbq and sandwiches. Tri-tip sandwich, BLT, club, hot link, all great, and with side they're pretty affordable. Beware, their hot links are spicy! Corn bread is delicious, bbq sauce is delightful. Never had a bad meal here. Also the service has always been great here. The servers have always been very polite, quick on refills, and welcoming. This is a great spot for lunch. Only really weird thing about the place is that to get to the restroom you literally have to walk through the kitchen. Feels weird. read more

Hello; My husband and I just moved to Vayaa-oh from out of state, and discovered Gracie's. Wow, what a discovery. It tastes like everything is made from scratch- just good home cooking. We sometimes stop in on our way to work- the kitchen is humming, the Chef and wait staff are humming songs to themselves, the place smells divine, there are biscuits in the oven- just like it was back at Grandma's back in the day! Then I find out in the Summer and fall, live music ( from Blues to Singer Songwriter to Bluegrass to Jazz - maybe even some world music this year(!!) ) and Barb q's take place here on the patio! Fantastic! Let's help make this beautiful little city by the water a new haven for food, culture , music and the Arts. A working Person's Sausalito... so much Opportunity to help re shape and re-invent Vallejo. And Gracie's is helping inspire me with new visions about what Vallejo Could be, not what it was. What a delicious jewel in the depressing taint that is Vallejo! The portions were great, the food delicious, the service wonderful. It's really hard to find really good, distinct BBQ joints in the Bay Area and this does the job! It's okay to leave the bulletproof vests at home, the facility is nice and really deserves better than to be in Vallejo. They're currently construction going on but the area seemed "alright". I have to say this is probably one of the BEST places to eat in Vallejo! I have been going for a few years now and the food is amazing! I love the great service, music, and outside patio seating. This place is perfect on a warm summer evening/night to sit outside and have a sweet tea in a big mason jar! :) They also have fresh lemonade, swamp juice, soda and beer. All of the bbq meat is so tasty and tender. I love the rice and beans. The macaroni salad is great too. I've had the homemade mac and cheese and I have to say it's so good! The cornbread is delish too! The tri tip sandwhich and club crossaint on a roll are definitley my go to items. I have to say, if you are in the area to go enjoy some bbq! Now that I'm doing the Davis/SF commute thing, I have ample opportunity to sample foodstuffs along my route. After hearing good things about Gracie's and reading the high praises on yelp, I thought that it was a sure thing. Upon approach, the enticing aroma of smoked meat also indicated that tastiness was close by. We ordered a brisket dinner and wanted a baby back rib dinner but they were out, so spare ribs it was. On the menu, it makes note of their "special BBQ sauce," "homemade BBQ sauce," and a "savory mop sauce." Only one sauce is served with the meat and it's a sweet style sauce. I do appreciate that it was served on the side, but the meat disappoints. The brisket was served as long thin slices with nary a fatty bite. The color was an insipid flat gray-brown ringed by a pinkish smoke ring. So yes, the smoke ring was present, but where was the beef and smoke flavor and the juiciness? The spare ribs were better but only reached about 2 stars. Tender bites were intermingled with tough and dry bits and I didn't notice any dry rub flavor. Servings were large as they often are at BBQ places. Of the sides we tried, none impressed. The red beans and rice had an institutional flavor profile and a large Zataran's box was noted in the partially open kitchen. Cranberry-apple slaw had no discernible cranberries, however the apples were apparent and it was fine. The corn bread was on the cakey and crumbly end of the spectrum and was also fine. The service was very friendly and there's a definite sense of community with some chatter between the tables and also with the cops that showed up to pick up their dinners. It's the kind of place that you want to love but it really didn't come through for me. 2.5 stars. read more

Two more items checked off on my Gracie's to-try list: Breakfast and pie. Both are new since my last visit a few years ago. (I'm not in Vallejo often). The huge cup of coffee is by Moschetti, a local Vallejo roaster. Refills are offered. Eggs and tri-tip came with three large, tender slices of beef. The pleasant BBQ sauce is in squeeze bottles on the table. Here's a recommendation to order fried or poached eggs rather than scrambled. A runny yolk breaking into the cubed potatoes would have been great. The cubed potatoes with a sprinkle of chopped chives were fine but I'd like a crispier exterior. I like a fluffier scrambled eggs. The cornbread was good, not too sweet and better with a little butter and honey (also in squeeze bottles on the table). Next time I'll try the huge house-made biscuits which looked excellent. The cherries in the pie were canned, but had a nice tart tang. The crust was good with a slight touch of butter for flavor. Walking into the Gracies, there was the appetizing aroma of smoked, BBQ meat. Service was great and the restaurant is homey with an indoor restaurant, covered patio area and another open patio area. A bakery case in the restaurant had pies, cakes, croissants and biscuits. Sunday papers left behind by other customers were on top. There is a parking lot in back of Gracies as well as street parking. Prices are reasonable for breakfast and portions are filling. I paid $12 for the eggs and tri-tip. A similar breakfast at Denny's would have cost just as much without being half as good. One note however: I think the five star reviews are misleading and might lead to disappointment. Gracies is good. Gracies is good especially for Vallejo, a town which doesn't excell much restaurant-wise. Gracies is probably the best BBQ in town but, giving the location, that's not saying much. Gracies has been in Vallejo for many years, expanding the menu and it survives because it is one of the best places to eat in the area ... but it is not five star great. On my still-to-try list: Swamp juice ... an Arnold Palmer but made with sweet tea instead of regular tea. Cold drinks are served in Mason jars Baby back ribs - supposed to be best BBQ item here. 3 stars because at least the prices are in line with the food. Very bland, very basic BBQ here. As you'll note in my photo, once you remove the 11 unwanted items from the sandwich (tri tip sandwiches should come with nothing on them outta the gate) you get a flat, bland, Arby-esque roast beef sandwich. But way thinner, and with no fries anywhere in sight (hence the dry cornbread's presence). And the BBQ sauce! When there's only one unmarked choice, it better be OUT OF THIS WORLD or it just means you're mixing the cheapest stuff you can put together to pass off as BBQ sauce. Very bleh. Update 7/18/07: That's right, I FINALLY went back. I think it was the new patio area but the place looked inviting enough to convince my fiance back. First thing we noticed, the counter was gone and we were greeted when we walked in the door and given a menu. We ordered the sampler which was big enough for THREE! It came with two links, brisket, two pieces of chicken, choice of baby or spare ribs, corn bread, rice and beans, AND a choice of a side (we got macaroni salad but more about that later)!! Let's start with the meat - I mean BBQ is about the meat and then the sauce. They serve their meats dry with sauce on the side which is exactly how I like it. THE BRISKET - I watch enough food network to know that smoked meat should have a pink ring which shows how deep the smoke has penetrated the meat - this brisket had a 1/4 inch thick ring. The brisket was tender, moist but not fatty and had a sweeter smokyness to it so that you could, not only eat it without the sauce but you could enjoy it without the sauce. THE LINK - Cooked to perfection and sliced up so that when you stick your fork in it, you don't get sprayed with oil (I don't know if this has ever happen to you but its like acid). Not too spicy but not too bland, real good flavor. THE CHICKEN - Moist, not oily and oh so smoky and like the brisket it had a touch of sweet smoke. The skin was not charred, the meat fell of the bones and cooked just right. THE SPARE RIB (we got the spare rib instead of the baby back) - They cut the ribs down so you are not eating a 6 inch rib and getting crap all over your face. (very nice touch) What more can I say about the meats here? Another winner! So moist and tender that it fell of the bone; so sweet and truly BBQ that you did not need sauce for taste! RED BEANS AND RICE - It had bacon flavoring the beans...I think that is all I need to say about this cup of heaven!! MACARONI SALAD - Full of flavor! Had black olives in it!! I love you, macaroni salad, so full of fat and carbs hidden by the name salad but you are all flavor and nothing nutritious. CORN BREAD - The worst I have had in my life which I did not make myself....minus one star. They only gave us two napkins...hey I know that overhead costs can break a business but COME ON!! Give us at least two napkins each! Everyone knows the first napkin always falls apart before the end of the meal then what?? -------------------------------------------------- I went here for a late lunch with my fiance. We both got sick. We we think it was the potato salad but we have not been back since. I don't even remember how the BBQ tasted. What I do remember is the stomach cramp. Food here is amazing. When I had moved away from Vallejo for a few years, I would get cravings for Gracie's on the regular. The BBQ, cornbread, and any sandwiches on their very own croissants (they tend to be in very limited supply so I tend to call and see if they have any first) are great! I've also fallen in love with the way they make their strawberry lemonade (lemonade with strawberry puree). This place is a local joint in downtown Vallejo. Nothing fancy but when you are fiendin for some BBQ, this is the place to go. We ordered the family combo...$60 and it comes with enough food to feed at least 10 people and get you full! Spicy hot links, BBQ Chicken, Pork Ribs and two sides of choice plus corn bread and red beans and rice..oh yah! The red beans and rice was yummy...this is no popeye's red beans and rice..this is legit! I loved the pork ribs..a little tough on the outside, but I don't mind bitting into my meat. We hit this place up on a weekday when the restaurant wasn't full, so our service was pretty good. If you live in Vallejo, it's a cool little spot to go out and eat BBQ with the family. Finally a day without the kids. So the wife and I headed out for dinner not knowing where to go. She smelled the neighbor bbq'n and said it smelled good. I had heard of Gracie's and made the suggestion. So agreed so we headed down town. We found parking right in front. We walked in and were greeted promptly and told to sit wherever we wanted. It was kind of weird walking past the cashier stand to go outside. I felt like I needed permisiion from the manager. Our server was great. Very personable and took the time to help us with the menu which is quite large. The wife got the baby back rib and hot link combo and I got the tritip hot link combo with a side of chicken. The food came and it was decent at best. It had no flavor. From the meat to the sides. The beans and rice was horrible. Pasta salad was good. The links are good. My tri tip was very well done and the chicken was ok. I think they under season and rely on their sauce to do the trick. Problem is their sauce is just ok. I like bbq that stands on its on without sauce. Bottom line service A+, food C-. Kudos for serving tea in the BIG mason jars!! read more

I have been going to Gracies for years and I must say the food has always been pretty darn good! Today I had a taste for barbecue and decided to go to Gracies, when I picked up my to go plate the box felt light, mind you I got the rib and link dinner. I should have checked it before I left however I have always trusted their service When I opened my container there were three burnt ribs and two hotlinks the red beans and rice were cold and nasty and the green beans flavorless I do not know what happened but it was a horrible tasting meal. We live in Vallejo and are the first to support local businesses. We went to Gracie's years ago when they first opened and the glorious precedent had been set. We hadn't been to Gracie's recently and dropped in. We were told to choose our own seats and offered something to drink within the first five minutes or so. We ordered the smoked chicken and the combo plate with two sides; macaroni salad which was mediocre, beans and rice which were on mexican rice and the cornbread which definitely had been sitting for a while. It was curiously warm but difficult to chew as if it had been reheated. I remember fresh steaming cornbread in past visits. Not this time. However the chicken fell off the bone and the tri-tip was excellent as was the cole slaw which really deserved a double order. I also noticed sitting out in the patio more attention should be paid to sweeping and keeping the patio tables clean and replacing broken light bulbs on their stringed lights. But the service was excellent; the servers seem to know their job and accommodate the clientele. So with a two-star rating as I know this place has offered better fare, hopefully the management of Gracie's will read this, do a little tweaking and we will once again go back to support a local Vallejo business! read more

This guy started off with a trailer and a smoker in a parking lot. The food hasn't changed and the prices have relatively stayed the same. The BBQ here is so good. The best in Vallejo. Everything is smoked to perfection from the ribs to the brisket to the links. They are accompanied by one of the best sauces I've ever had....sweet, tangy with a little spicy kick. I found good BBQ in Vallejo! Another notch for Yelp app search of local restaurants! Yelp app helped me find this joint after a crave-driven search for "BBQ Nearby". I ordered a full order (slab) of baby back ribs with two sides, rice and beans and potato salad, and a Louisiana Hot Link. I really liked how the ribs were cleanly sliced but no separated. The meat was deliciously smoked and tender. Extra sauce ensures a bbq-cheeks smile from ear to ear. A hit! The beans and rice and cornbread were just OK. The potato salad has black olives in it and I don't like black olives but I ended up finishing it. It was different but in a good way. The sides were a little small but good, I'll try different ones next time. I had a beer served in a chilled mason jar, that's dirty south! If you're looking for some good stuff, check out Gracie's! June 2007: update Gracie's is trying harder! This is a good thing, because they are packed all the time especially for 'take out' orders. A new menu which has some great items, a new computer system that has a mind of its own some days, and some new drinks including SWAMP JUICE and my favorite, SWEET TEA! Lunch on the patio is a great way to spend the afternoon - you won't be disappointed. ~~~ 4 Stars because we've found a place at which my parents will eat that is not Japanese or Chinese food! 4 Stars for location, location, location...downtown Vallejo, close to the Empress Theater and on the corner of Sonoma Blvd. and Florida Street. Too bad I just cannot get super excited about this place -- LOTS of food -- but I think I must be a finicky eater (what, me!?) 'cuz it doesn't thrill me or cause any of the usual BBQ cravings that will send me across the Benicia bridge to that place in Pleasant Hill. But...Gracie's is growing on me...I judge all BBQ joints by their sides, their cornbread and, most imporantly, their SAUCE.
