The food here is actually pretty good, but the lady taking the orders is absolutely a terrible person she disrespects. The customer said come in. She's constantly cutting people off. She's done it to me and I have noticed that they're not really sanitary in here. The pots got a very dark burn on them and that's because they won't take the pots to get professionally cleaned, but that's pretty much it if they clean the place up, they should be all right but one day somebody's gonna hit the lady in the front for her disrespect while taking orders kind of feel sorry for it. Im not a soul food connoisseur but this was a great find to me, everything a local spot is supposed to be: unique, inviting, friendly. I went on a Sat so I got the 3 piece BBQ chicken plate with two chicken and one hot link. The hot link was a bit too spicy for me but there were no leftovers of anything else on the plate, it was all very good. Old school homey vibe from the decor to the service. Nothing fancy here, but they serve some good grub at the most reasonable prices! Definitely great when you want a good meal on a budget. The two older ladies working are straight forward and sweet. They remind me of aunties at a party wanting to feed you and make sure you're well taken care of. They have daily specials too! The breakfast menu ends at 11AM. Street parking is available and I never had an issue finding any. Everything is low key. Some signs are hand written and most dishes are served on disposable dish-ware with plastic cutlery. Condiments are self serve. Don't forget to bus your own table too. The chicken and waffles are good, I only wish it came with more pieces of chicken especially since the pieces are small. The waffle was crunchy. The steak omelette had lots of great ingredients that you usually don't get at other places and the grits were actually yummy, I usually don't eat grits either! Owned and operated by the sweetest ladies, i really enjoyed my time here. This restaurant has been up and running for around 20 years. The inside is definitely ideal for small parties, max 4 people/table. They have a bunch of decor around the inside of old photos and memories making for a heartwarming sit down. The service is amazing! They are so nice and sweet and will make you feel taken care of. They consistently check in on you throughout the meal and also clean and maintain the area well. They do close early and they shut off their grills an hour beforehand so make sure to drop by early if you want to grab some food before closing time! I get the special Obama burger when I go there , but I have had chicken and waffles, I had also got some of that that smothered pork and I had a really good portion of some peach cobbler there too. You could get that with a la mode if you want it that way. Yes it is that good. 100% .She has this sauce in a bottle for sale there that should get an award because it's so good you have to go there JUST to buy that sauce. The food is southern delicious! Like you are sitting in a southern grandma's kitchen. The chicken &waffles and meatloaf special are PERFECT! The service is very down home and personal. I knew I hit gold when Yvonne, the owner asked if I wanted my cheeseburger with a waffle instead of a bun.....whaaaatttt?? Yes and yes.... That sounds amazing but just had a bad hamburger yesterday...(to clarify the hamburger was from some other place), so decided for the Philly cheese steak with everything, fries and a coke. The steak pieces were perfectly seasoned, melt in your mouth meat, cheese and whatever magic was in there, I think mushrooms, onions and peppers. The fries where standard issue but where hot and crispy. I can't wait to come back in a weekend and try the fried fish or cheese burger. Black owned in Vallejo and well run spot so must support. Very colorful displays and posters on their walls, they love Obama here so probably best not to talk politics..LOL...but just very clean and definitely home cooking flavor. I visited My Homestyle Cafe for the first time to have lunch one afternoon. I ordered the special of the day which was a smothered pork chop with mashed potato's and gravy, collard greens, corn bread, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese. I topped it off with some peach cobbler and a fruit punch Snapple. My food was delicious. Everything came out hot and in big portions. Sitting down to eat in the restaurant was like eating at my grandma's house. The entire restaurant was comforting and a wealth of knowledge. It was nice to be able to look at all the pictures and see the history of how many people the restaurant touched and how much they appreciated the culture and those around them. We ran across this fantastic little Cafe tucked away in Vallejo today. We were in town visiting a friend and drove across to Mare Island and pulled up "lunch near my current location" on my go to App.....Yep....Yelp! This was one of the 1st places listed and was literally a few hundred yards away.....so off we went. Menu is basic, good homestyle food (as the name suggests) wife got the fish and chips and I got the grilled cheese (my go to at any new place.....if they make a good one....it goes on the return again list....this place is FIRMLY on the list). The staff were friendly and dropped off utensils and pointed out where the condiments were behind us. In quick order, our food arrived. The portions were perfect sized and piping hot. The kitchen is large and the staff really know their stuff. I saw they do various specials depending on the day of the week, we need to go back for BBQ day! My wife gave the lady behind the counter a hug when we were leaving. I misplaced my sunglasses while we were there and later in the evening, I had a call from a friend who owns a business a few blocks away from here (we had mentioned that we were visiting her to the ladies in the store) they had called her and told her they had my sunglasses!! And are going to have them dropped by her store. Fantastic. Oh and did I mention our meal including 2 drinks was $22! Incredible value. Go check em out. My Obama Burger was made "MY WAY" (I added a fried egg, bacon, and mushrooms), without any extra expense, just as they said it would be. Cons: (more like suggestions) 1. They use chopped garlic from a jar. Fresh is ALWAYS best! 2. The burger was a little greasy. (not sure why) 3. The menu says Assorted Pastries...$2.50 and you get one big pastry for $2.50. For the price, I didn't expect more than one, but I wanted to see what I would get. Suggestion: remove the "s" or add a "1" so that people know. I was born and raised in Vallejo and am ashamed to say that this past month was my first time eating here. Shout out to Groupon for always introducing me to things that are right in front of my face. This place is a gem! I know that that phrase gets tossed around way too much but when you're from here, there's not too many places that will get you leaving with a smile like this establishment. When my girlfriend and I came in, it was a one woman show. The lady was holding down the register, stamping down the waffles, and frying up the chicken at the same time. I didn't get a friendly vibe at first because she was obviously busy but when she was all finished, she was the absolute kindest woman to serve us. I ordered the philly cheese steak and was not disappointed. I don't remember what was inside it but it was HOT! Any dish that can surprise me with a hot dish will automatically get you 5 stars in my book. The meat inside was plentiful and juicy, but the cheese was meh. It was packaged shredded cheese. I'm not really trippin off of that because I heard in philly, the legit was is to use cheese wiz, so I guess My Homestyle Cafe is one step ahead. This review is more for my girlfriends dish. She had the chicken and waffles. The chicken is A1 here but the waffle is to die for. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE that the waffle is straight crispy and flakey on the outside, but you still get that dough on the inside. That waffle is probably the best waffle I've ever had in life. Amazing! We stopped here on our way home from San Francisco. Found it on yelp. The women running this restaurant are so nice. Lots of cool posters and pictures on the walls. Great specials and lots to choose from the menu. My husband had the Philly Cheesesteak....said it was the best he's had in years. I had the fried chicken sandwich. The fries were cooked to perfection, hot and crispy! Great food. The desserts looked delicious too, just didn't have room for more. The prices were reasonable also. We discovered this gem today and it will be our spot when we are back in Valejo! We walked in and ordered fish and fries and a grilled cheese and fries as well as a couple of Sodas. We were so surprised that it was so reasonably priced! The wonderful woman who helped us, brought over napkins and cutlery, then brought out these more than adequate portions of food. She let us know that condiments were on a shelf behind us and told us to make ourselves at home. At home..... I had just told my husband that it felt like being at your favorite Aunties house. The dining chairs were so comfy and we enjoyed the conversation with this wonderful woman (I wish I had asked her name!), ordered dessert to go, because, peach cobbler, I asked if I could hug her, and we headed home to Tracy. We had misplaced my husband's sunglasses while there, but got home, and had a msg that they had found them. My cousin and I went to this little breakfast cafe after reading up reviews and looking for a place to eat. I was attracted to the many photos of the chicken and waffles, and thus we went! Walking into the Cafe, you can see that it has a lot of character. There are many photos on the walls, posters, and the menu is on the left, if you're just walking in. It brings out the uniqueness of the cafe and it really shows! We ordered at the counter, and then sat down, since the only one working at the time was just the owner herself. She's a very sweet lady, and you can tell she put in a lot of effort into this place! They only accept cash or debit (there's a fee), no credit, so be prepared ahead of time. I ordered the chicken and waffles with one scrambled egg, and my cousin ordered a breakfast sandwich with bacon and a side of grits ($1.00 each), using a croissant bread ($0.50 extra), instead of sliced bread. The chicken and waffles were really great, don't get me wrong, but I was a bit disappointed by the lack of chicken: only two small wings and a small drumstick versus that big waffle. My cousin's sandwich seemed to be really good with the side of grits she got. She finished her whole breakfast meal, and she usually brings leftovers home, so she definitely enjoyed it! However, just something to note was that she found a chunk of egg shell in her sandwich. I'm sure the owner didn't mean to, since she was busy doing other orders too, but she should have seen it very quickly because of the size of it... Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back here again, but it definitely needs more portion on the plate (for me at least, anyways). I'd rate this place 3.5 stars, but I chose to round down, only because of the egg shell. Hopefully the next time I go will change my rating! I hope to try the burgers! read more
