I traveled 26 miles in a crazy rainstorm to this place because my 18-year-old son said I had to try it. I also wanted to go because I heard they had vegetarian and pescatarian options. Being a pescatarian, I am sadly not able to eat at most soul food places unless they have seafood options, which many don't. Urban Fusions even has vegan collard greens on their menu! I was expecting the place to have the traditional greasy spoon diner feel that a lot of soul food places have. Instead this place had more of a artsy urban feel to it, which I loved. My son got the fried okra and the southern 3-way plate with the fried chicken, fish, jumbo shrimp and fries, with Mac n cheese for the side. He loved it and of course couldn't finish it all, so he saved it for later. His friend had the sticky ribs and fries, which he said were amazing. I ordered the fried basa with vegan collard greens and of course fried okra, which my son and I order any time we see it on a menu. The fish was PERFECTION. It was seasoned just right and fried to the point of being crunchy but not at all greasy. The okra was flavorful and not too salty the way it can be at some places. I tasted the mac and cheese and really liked that it was seasoned with a touch of garlic. Yum. Our server Lyla was sweet and attentive. Be sure to tip her well when you come to this place. None of us could finish all of our food and had to take the remainder to go. We all left feeling super full and happy. All three of us slept like logs. Walking in, it's an interesting decor I should say. The walls are made out of a foam texture. She cute. There are booths along the wall and tables in the middle. This place is your local hang out, a lot of people are return customers. Their drink menu is nice and drinks are definitely on the cheaper side. Our server was so funny! We ordered the black Barbie margaritas.... At first I was scared but damn... they was good. We ordered another round. Two will do you justice here. We were heading out to another event so we ordered appetizers. The fried okra which was delicious and perfect texture, also the ratio of breading to okra was great. They needed a dipping sauce, which later was brought out. We also ordered the pork belly and let me tell you, it was fire. Cooked to perfection. An overall disappointing experience. We waited forever for everything--not sure if the server was overwhelmed or just underwhelming. I always wondered where Urban Fusions was. I had seen people talk about it but never got to go until Vallejo's Restaurant week. Wendy is so kind and so humble. She does it all really - she's in the front of the house, back of the house, she even has time to chat with her guests which is a luxury we as guests get to have. Now the flavors and the menu are rich. I am talking about a true fusion of not just what Wendy and her sister grew up with but what this community has been built on. It draws on flavors of the melting pot of Vallejo and pays homage to their roots. The curry is my favorite. First time ever coming to this restaurant and I definitely want to come back to experience the ambiance. Coming in, it felt like it had an intimate atmosphere, but also a "homey" feel. I want to come back and experience it. I went to the front to order my food and the staff member, who seemed young, took my order, but not my payment (at the moment). I kind of stood there waiting to see if I had to pay or come back or what. I asked her should I come back, she said yes, then I asked how long-30 minutes? And she was like yeah, that works. I left and came back before the 30 minutes and asked if I could pay and just wait here, but by that time my food was done. That was the only negative experience I had, nonetheless, I enjoyed my food. I got the salmon garlic noodles! Sooo good! I love some good garlic noodles! I would just go back and order the garlic noodles. Also hot the chicken wings and fries and the pork belly bowl. Urban Fusions in Vallejo is a truly authentic Caribbean, Southern, and soul food experience! From the food to the atmosphere and service, everything exceeded my expectations. I ordered the gumbo, and it was delicious. It was well-seasoned, served piping hot, and had a great mix of small and jumbo shrimp--both without shells, which I appreciated. The crab meat was already picked out rather than being served in the shell, making it easy to enjoy without extra effort. The andouille sausage gave the gumbo a nice kick of flavor. No complaints at all! My lemon berry mango lemonade was sweet, just the way my son likes it, and it was served with fancy ball-shaped ice, which added a nice touch. However, I would have preferred less ice since my son finished it in two gulps! We had someone at our table with a shellfish allergy, and I want to give a big shoutout to the server, who was very accommodating. They made sure to bring out that person's food first to prevent any cross-contamination. My husband ordered the oxtails with sides of greens, rice, and cornbread. He enjoyed the meal and said the cornbread was moist and tasted like cake. The rice paired well with the oxtails, though he found the oxtails a bit salty. My son ordered the three-way combo with chicken, fish, and shrimp/prawns, along with a side of oxtail gravy and rice and candied yams. He had the catfish, and it was moist--not over-fried or hard. You can tell that Urban Fusion cooks with grace and takes their time to provide quality over quantity. The portions are fairly big, and everything is well-prepared. The candied yams were not overly sweet, tasted fresh--not canned--and were well-seasoned. The oxtail gravy and rice were also flavorful, though he mentioned he would have preferred a different side instead. Now, I have to highlight the mac & cheese--hands down, the best mac & cheese I've had in Vallejo! Many places serve mac & cheese, but this was homemade with no American cheese or processed flavors. You could taste the authenticity, and my kids even said a lot of the food reminded them of our holiday meals at home, which meant a lot to me. The restaurant itself is not very big. One side of the restaurant has high-top barstool seating, while the other side features booths, so I'm not sure how they would accommodate large parties. However, the space gives off a diner-like setting with a jazzy, date-night feel. The ambiance is enhanced by wholesome, soulful music, which adds to the charm. This place has a class! There is also a bar, which adds to the upscale but relaxed atmosphere. Whether you're looking for a great meal or a nice drink, this spot delivers. Beyond the food, the staff are friendly and hospitable, and make you feel like family. You can tell this is a community-loved spot, as customers treated the staff with respect and kindness. It's also a great family place, my 5yr old's energy blended right in, it wasn't loud, just everyone having a great time. My favorite, great 90's and early 2000's R&B was playing on a Friday. We ordered a curry burrito and it was so good we want to get it again to split for lunches. It was soul food night and I got the fried Basa fish with fries. My god that was perfect and even the fries were perfect, totally a detail they coulda skipped but didn't. We got the vegan tortilla soup, spicy spicy but delicious. I've been in buildings like this in Vallejo and none of them look as nice as this one. We enjoyed nice jazz music. I came just for the catfish and I was not disappointed. Keep in mind these prices come with very large portions. So, I find it fair. 1 entre and 2 apps were enough food to feed 3 people. My cocktail was fantastic and had tropical flavors. We had the Peruvian Beans & rice w/ shrimp, yellow chicken curry & urban lemonades. The Beans & rice ain't no punk! It's spicy with all the right flavors. The shrimp was cooked to perfection! This street is quite the foodie spot, so if you are going to an event at the Empress Theater, you have many choices for great eats before the show. We arrived at opening because we were famished and I'd already read the menu and was drooling in anticipation. We started with drinks. I went for the sweet tea, and as someone who spent time in both Alabama and Georgia, I know a good southern sweet tea when it hits my lips. And this was some good southern sweet tea. We both opted for the Peruvian Beans and Rice which starts at a base price of $13. Then you have a choice of adding to it if you want to. $4 will get your choice of chicken or Yellow curry potatoes with sweet potato and black beans, or $5 for shrimp. I had the addition of the curry potatoes and my friend had the chicken. The beans are Mayocoba beans. Google world says, "Despite their name ("Peruano" means "Peruvian" in Spanish), they are actually native to Mexico and are a common ingredient in Mexican soups and side dishes. Mayocoba beans have a buttery taste, and are said to have less of a gas-producing effect than other beans." I say they are super yummy and creamy. Similar in texture to butter beans but with a pinto flavor. The dish has an underlying heat, which is pleasant. They were very flavorful and comforting. The curry is so yummy and provides another flavor profile and texture. The staff were two super sweet young ladies under the tutelage of the owner. I just loved how nice they were and how hard they were working. Reminds me of the times I worked with my mother at her job as a teen. Taught me much more than any classroom would have. read more

I'm sad to write this review. I heard about this place and looked at reviews and people said how friendly and nice the owners were and I guess I was expecting that. When we got there, a woman was chatty and talking to the people at the next table, but when she came to our table, she just said "are you ready to order? What can I get you?" I asked her if the rice plates were good and she just nonchalantly said " Ya, it's good." And then she didn't elaborate. She didn't say another word or offer any suggestions on the menu...until we asked. We were really kind of shocked and put off by that. She didn't talk up the menu at all. I had to ask what she thought was good or would recommend. Is it coincidence or irony when she said the most expensive item on the menu, oxtails at $29.00 was their best dish? . We had drinks and sadly one of the drinks was the best thing we had there. We had to ask for extra plates twice. We had to ask for extra ketchup two times. Extra salad dressing, twice too. They weren't busy and I could see them standing in the back. They just totally forgot when we asked for anything. We had to get their attention to bring us stuff every time we asked. I just didn't see a lot of experienced waitresses there and great service is half the tip. The mac & cheese was gooey and cheesy. I might get it again, but I wouldn't make a trip back just for it. Shrimp salad was kind of underwhelming. I guess I was expecting maybe a few grilled shrimp on there with a smoky flavor. What we got were just tiny cold shrimp with no flavor. The girl that helped us towards the end was really nice but she couldn't save this experience. I was just hoping for something so much more. Honestly, this place was really expensive for downtown Vallejo. And if you're gonna be expensive, you better be damn good. And they're just not....yet. I really hope they can get there because the place is decorated so cute. If they can have a well trained and enthusiastic staff, improve the service and give the menu a little more attention then in my opinion they have a chance of making it. Woman owned, black owned, and family ran! The best of everything!! We have wanted to try this place for some time but always seem to miss their open days. We finally got to enjoy a dinner here on Valentine's Day night. We were so excited and we had an amazing meal. They had a deal for two which included an appetizer, two entrees, two drinks, and two desserts, for $160! That is a DEAL!!!! We couldn't believe how much we got for such a great price. Service was great, everyone was so nice. And you could just feel how kind they are. We really enjoyed the thorough service. We ended up being the only customers there which didn't seem right because the food is so good! I wish they could have more clientele and hopefully my review can help that. My mom and I came in for Mother's Day dinner. The food was outstanding! We spent time talking with the friendly owner and waitress. At one point, the chef walked by our table and I said, "it looks like it's gonna be good, and he said, "it tastes even better." True that. I visited Urban Fusion primarily due to the reviews, but now I feel misled. I ordered the catfish dinner, for which I was charged $25 and some change. Upon arriving home, I discovered that they had provided bosa fish instead of catfish. The portion size is unreasonable, and the fish is under-seasoned and lacks crispiness, tasting unpleasantly bland. Additionally, the oxtail gravy rice was a disappointment, bearing no resemblance to authentic oxtail gravy. Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied, having spent $25 on a meal I do not wish to consume. So....last week on a day in the life of Tiffany and Steven shenanigans...we were looking for a Mexican lunch spot. Our most recent trusted restaurant served beans with hair and I can't bring myself to go back there- even though I have had great meals up until then...ANYWAY I yelped best rated on my area abf headed towards #1 however ended up at the #3 this quaint bistro a block and a half away. One star for astectics. Very clean outside and indoor decor warm welcoming and posh- black lacquer and wine. Cute wait area with fireplace insert.....giving much ambiance. We occupied a pub style table. Greeted upon entry by a Black dreaded woman(star #2) who later introduced herself aa Wendy. Sooo...now I am wondering what actually is being served here. Now tge name of the restaurant made me believe we were going to a local Mexican spot but her presence has me thing Mexican fusion....on the lines of Asian fusion which often is delicious. Yelp listed as Caribbean, Mexican soooo after reviewing the menu and consuming meal I can only say it is possibly Spanish or Mexican inspired dishes sinxes they have tacos, burritos, and nachos. All with a possible Island/unique twist. We started with the Supreme nachos. He had an urban burrito with Auntie's ground beef as they were out if steak. I had a shrimp taco plate. I substituted salad for rice . The beans were a white bean...nice consistency, mild flavor kinda nutty. Taco ummmm ok. Nachos were pretty good...a little too wet. He slammed the burrito just commented that we had to ask for salsa, sour cream to make it work. Flavors weren't bold. We asked for fresh peppers on the side and they got us get to the level if heat we like. Wendy brought out a diced black chili that should accompany all dishes. I love that they had a lot of vegan options ( star #3)and easy with order customization. She also gets a star of got her transparency and 10% comp on the total che k as an apology for my order mishap that she immediately corrected. I'm returning with friends in tow to check out the vegan dishes and explore the drink menu. We definitely doing a repeat visit for Soul Food Wednesday! I wish I had taken more pictures.
