EXCELLENT pizza. Not your average toppings that you see everyday. We tried 5 slices, pepperoni, margherita, spinach, funghi and summer squash. ALL GOOD PIZZA. Would come back again next time we dog sit! Rating 4 star bc ranch is $1 extra ... so pricey!

Tucked into the side of your average street in Berkeley is the best pizza we've had in the Bay Area. GIOIA is serving up some VERY good pizza out of what feels like a hole in the wall. Beware that parking may be hard to find as it's right off the street although there is a lot just down the road. The inside is very bare bones, which in this case is a good sign. The smell of the oven and dough just hits you once you step in and it's fantastic. Ordering was quick and easy and the slices are priced a bit high but for the quality of pizza we'd say it was worth it. We got some classic slices and also their fungi slice. From ordering to eating it took about 5-10 minutes despite a few people ahead of us so it was relatively quick. And now time to try it... man was it good. It's clearly a good representation of NY style. The crust is firm and crunchy but the pizza has a nice flop to it. The cheese is tasty with a good sauce under it too. The fungi also popped with flavor from the mushrooms, parsley, and olive oil; just a great series of slices. The best place to eat it is probably the bench seating they have outside but it may be full as a heads up. As far as we see it, GIOIA is a must stop in Berkeley. It came very highly recommended and was devoured in less than 5 minutes. We almost wish we didn't have plans to eat later that day because we could've eaten 2 more slices each then and there. This is as close to true NYC style pizza as you can get outside of NYC.

Lots of premade pizzas to choose from

4++ small pizza spot located in Berkeley. This place is seriously not much larger or wider than the counter you order at. The folks here are friendly and they have lots of premade slices that you can choose from. This place is conducive for takeout or grab and go. It's a great neighborhood spot where you can walk inside or order from the window I think. I wasn't super hungry so I just got the mushroom slice. Nice crisp and great flavor. My brother took me here when we were visiting the area with him and my sister-in-law. They let me know that this place was one of their old haunts. Just a really great spot to grab a quick bite for a reasonable price.

    Squash slice, perfection!!!

These bad yelp reviews are ridiculous. The people commenting on the bad attitude or over priced pizza, need help. You're getting a slice of pizza not a Michelin star experience! Like get your slice and move on. My husband and I are house sitting for a friend in Berkeley and found this last minute. Honestly, BEST slice we've had probably ever. Lived in LA for over 20 years and nothing compares. I got the squash slice, incredible!!! Husband got the sausage slice, equally as good! The front staff was totally great and sweet! We're going back again tonight, we can't stop thinking about the pizza!

Previous review was 4 stars but I'm upping that to 5. I'm rating Gioia on the pizza. I love it. Love it. I think it's improved. And I love the style which is the New York style way. You order your slices which are pre made pies. Then they heat them in the oven which makes them hot and crispy. Several topping choices to choose. No indoor seating. Other than a bench there's really no outdoor seating either. But the pizza is so good. And it's nice, shady outside. Decent amount of street parking.

Delicious pizza! It was easy to place an online order on their website. I also needed to modify my pick up time and easily got a hold of them when I called and everything was smooth. We got the Pepperoni, Asparagus, and Julian pizzas, the chopped salad and cannolis. Everything was SO GOOD. Will definitely be one of our new go-to's when we're in the Berkeley area.

The half baked pie, delivered and baked at home at 500 degrees for ~6 min has helped me officially stop missing pizza in NY.

Delays, deliberate misdirection, miscommunication, and cold pizza, all for the tidy sum of $36 and change. Thanks, Goia.

Brief Summary: - Close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station…read more- Indoor and outdoor seating available - Right next to it there is a shop where you can purchase slices and ingredients Lately, this is the family's favorite pizza place. The first time we tried this was a few years ago, and one of my family members wanted to try a new place to eat pizza and had been exploring one almost once a month cadence. Then we tried here, and we were amazed and became our favorite. One of the reasons why we like going here more often than the other restaurants, the food of course, but the comfortable restaurant atmosphere. Still to this day we chose to walk-in and test our luck than take a reservation, and so far we were able to get a seat. In the most recent visit, there was a university game, so there was a longer wait time. The good thing about waiting was there were dedicated seats to wait, or in the first few minutes we hung out in the shop next door. Here, visitors can choose to buy and take home a slice instead of dining in, order food or shop for ingredients. The pizzas we've eaten so far are the Sicily style and this one has a lovely texture. Its appearance is like pillows. It's lightly-crispy on the edges, even the under-layer. It holds the pizza toppings without bending. We also tried a pizza named the most thinnest pizza, and we loved this one too. This one was located under the Speciality menu, so this didn't have topping customization. We loved that while it was very thin it still held the toppings too. I also love stracciatella cheese, so I also tasted the milkiness while eating this slice. We've also loved the pasta and have been trying a new menu each time. The one we tried recently had a fun texture, like a gentle crunch, and the pesto sauce was easy to eat, didn't get heavy in the end of the meal. I also tried a salad that was being served to most of the tables on this particular evening; a bowl of purple leafs, purple onions, and beets. The chicory leaf had a subtle bitterness to it, but with the sweet beet, it balanced it out. I also love goat cheese, and it was creamy. Wrapping up the review, it gave me a soft joy when the staff recognized and greeted us. The staff were kind and attentive since our first visit,, so his was another part that we liked during our eating experience. We'll definitely visit again when we're craving pizza.

Their menu is stacked with so many items from appetizers, drinks, and then pizzas. I started off with some olives, and they were perfect. Not sure where they sourced them from. I ordered the Old Faithful and I should've ordered two. I tried their pie for the first time, sharing a She Wolf pizza and spicy Caesar between our party of two. They strictly serve 14 inch thin crust pies, which is a decent amount of food split between 2, if you supplement with a starter course. The She Wolf, littered with olives and garlic confit, is sublime, and the dollops of burrata thoughtfully portioned on every slice make a rich, excellent contrast to the tangy sauce underneath. I'd imagine Portnoy being likely pleased with the undercarriage, which was stiff enough to not forfeit any of its structural integrity nor toppings to the almost-inevitable flop. The spicy Caesar is a damn good Caesar and not over nor under dressed. Next time, I'd add some anchovies. In Carrie Bradshaw fashion, I also indulged in a chilled red with my pizza this afternoon while people watching on their adorable patio. Is there really a better lunch to be had?
