I lived in Japan for four years - I know my sushi. I know my miso. I know my natto, kinpira, kaisou sarada, tempura, etc. etc and Gen has it all in super authentic deliciousness. They have the freshest tasting NON slab of low-grade fish on a fistful of rice (ala Manhattan style) sushi that I have had anywhere outside of Japan. The decor is edgy yet completely warm and inviting and will wrap you up like a temaki as you sip your sake and swirl your wasabi and shoyu. I just moved into the area and was thrilled to find a nice, neighborhood sushi restaurant -- Gen! I found the fish to be fresh, the waitstaff friendly, and the menu chock-full of "standard favorites" as well as creative "new" rolls! The seaweed salad isn't the usual kind that is common--it includes two different kinds of seaweed. Yum! There is a very cute area for outdoor seating when the weather is nice. This is a small, cute place. They also offer delivery service! UPDATE: I am now a regular of Gen. It is really excellent. I took my parents here and they ordered the white meat teriyaki special and they were utterly blown away! The miso soup is great, and the sushi is above average. I came here and got udon, and it was excellent too. So, as I am "branching out" and trying new things on Gen's menu, I am never disappointed. Also, the lunch special can't be beat. 1. The Chirashi. For 15 bucks get a load of the freshest, yummiest, best-est combo ever! Salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shiso leaf, makerel, amaebi, ikura, hirame, mirugai, and uni. Everything is cut lovingly and presented beautifully. Of course since this is chirashi it's slightly different each time, but seriously, UNI!! And so pretty! It's like eating a piece of art for $15! 2. Brunch. $13 prixe fixe brunch includes: Coffee (damn good coffee too), a cocktail (sake mimosa or sparkling cranberry w/ sake), SOUP (they have the most amazing soups, pumpkin with a sake kasu base is one of the favorites that i've tried), a mini chirashi with wild rice, an egg dish of some sort (scrambled egg with unagi for maybe...), an egg roll (ex. mango, red bean and wild rice) and then, after all that, your choice of a main course. Every week they get creative, different soups, egg rolls, etc. Amazing. 3. I could go on about the food and prices, but the atmosphere/decor is also truly notable. Everything is DIY, but done with style and expertise. Check out the bar, a beautiful, natural piece of wood, pretty cool. There is a small yard in the back, with a canopy(?) sort of thing, the construction is uniquely impressive. The art on the walls change periodically and always features pretty good stuff. Everything is cozy and inviting, with good music too. Roots reggae, blues, jazz, etc. Oh, and the bathroom is cleeean. So, those are only three reasons (there are many), why this place is great. There are some things I should mention: the wait staff is friendly, but a bit spacey and slow. And, (this is important!) about the chefs, if you're having sushi, avoid that one Ecuadorian guy. It's usually a group of rastafarian Japanese dudes, (Naoki is the best sushi chef) but EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, Nester (Ecuadorian dude), mans the sushi bar when Naoki isn't there, and consequently ruins everything. So Gen, you are my gentrification dream, did you know that? Though you mysteriously do not deliver miso soup with your sushi deluxe, I forgive you every time. Why? Because while other sushi shops make me feel like I'm eating leftovers, your fish is makes me feel like I'm a baleen whale swimming off the coasts of Japan, scooping up the freshest schools . You are delectable when you deliver; super thick, moist, brightly colored, neatly plated. You know exactly what I need when I come to you; a calm and elegant space, a subtly sexy , multi-ethnic "dread" locked staff to fantasize about as I gaze out in my hand rolled/sake stupor. At first, Gen may appear to be an odd combination of Japanese cuisine and Rastafarian style. However, upon further investigation it seems to be a perfectly natural convergence of two individual, tranquilizing elements. This satisfying alliance is best described by analogy: Sitting next to a wood burning fire place : While it's snowing outside :: Eating a tuna, mango and avocado roll : While listening to reggae music. I've never had a bad meal there. It's affordable for sushi (especially for New York) and they offer a fun and unique variety of maki. The atmosphere is warm and wooden. There are seasonal changes in menu, but they seem to have pumpkin tempura regularly which is enough to warrant a glowing review from me. Plus, you can justify coming here any time of day, from brunch (an amazing deal) to lunch to dinner to late night take-away. Go to Gen to achieve dining zen. read more

For Brooklyn, for not leaving the United States, and for the price, you really can't beat Gen. Once in awhile they seem to have an off night, but for the most part I'm always happy when I leave here. With the exception of perhaps Taro, Gen is my favorite place for authentic Japanese-made sushi in the borough. To the previous Yelper girl who gave Gen a one-star rating while pondering that 'maybe none of us have tasted real sushi'--I'm not sure what or where you're basing your opinion off of, but coming from someone who's resided in Japan longer than most so-called New Yorkers have resided in NYC, and also coming from countless Japanese friends I've brought to Gen, their sushi is almost always excellent. By far the greatest Japanese spot in the area, perhaps even in all Brooklyn. We stumbled upon this place a few weeks back and I've now been three times in a month. The food is so good and the menu is quite expansive I want to try everything at least once. So far i've not been disappointed. The place itself is welcoming and intimate. The staff are unendingly friendly, there is a fantastic garden space and the food is fantastic. There is a pork belly dish that comes in a warm broth, and the pork bell is so tender that it literally melts in your mouth. I have never had anything so delicious for such a sensational price. Why did I only find this place AFTER moving out of the city? From the customer service, to the waiter service, to the food, to the atmosphere, to the decor, from the first second I called the place to the last second we left it, this was probably one of the best overall dining experiences I've had in NYC in the past 10 years I've been here. It was my birthday night and my small group of sushi for three turned into sushi for eight in the 11th hour. Without knowing the restaurant geography of this part of Brooklyn too well, Gen showed up on a Yelp search (thanks guys!) in the nick of time. I made a Hail Mary call around 4 p.m. that day (a Saturday) to ask for a reservation at 7:30 p.m. They said they don't take reservations on weekends, but they will try their best to accommodate our group. The woman asked for me to call back again closer to 7 with an updated arrival time and guest amount, as everyone knows: every group dinner ends up running late with a few people who don't show up or someone who decides to bring along someone you've never met to what's supposed to be an intimate event. I called back around 7:15pm and said we would be running late (of course) and would get there around 8:15pm, but the group size should be holding to 8. I was fashionably late for my own party, but by the time I got there at 8:30pm, all my friends were seated at a long, L-shaped table toward the back. It was a great start to my birthday night to see our party taken care of, without having to deal with the "we can't seat you until your entire party is here" or the "if you're not all here in 10 minutes you have to forfeit your table" or "we hate everyone in this city and are just gonna be rude and ruin your night" moments. And just to say how nice/important/unheard of the above 87 paragraphs are, this place is TI-NY. And PACKED on Saturday night. There were people crammed into every crevice in the dining area as well as the small vestibule and outside waiting for tables. The menu/decor is definitely a little different than your normal, neon-lighted sushi spot. Oh, so you want to know about the food now, right? It's got a little Caribbean/South American flare to it and it's pretty much the best combinations of flavors ever. Let's just say, I honestly don't think I've ever put a better tasting or visually appealing roll in my mouth than Gen's citrus salmon roll. Anyone who knows me knows that every time I go out for sushi (which is like 2x/week), at least one of my rolls is some sort of salmon with jalapeno combo. This one truly takes the (fish) cake. (Get it? Fishcake?) The salmon and jalapeno also had asparagus, tomatillo AND onion on the inside WITH AVOCADO ON TOP. And for $9.50? Whaaaaaaaaaat! I swear, my sushi fairy godmother dreamed this roll up that day and led my finger to tap on "Gen" in the Yelp app and made me call and made the hostess take a reservation for 8 people on a Saturday night when they don't take reservations on weekends and pulled her marionette strings and made the big L table in the back open up and made all my friends not miss the subway and get there on time and made me a tad bit late so I could get there and not deal with any hassles or drama or anything and just enjoy my birthday night. Oh, and the server was bomb too -- always refilling our glasses and always with a smile on his face, even though I know large parties can be obnoxious to most. I just have to say "Thank you" to Gen for helping me pull together on a whim the most awesome birthday dinner in recent memory (besides the ones I had at the roller skating rink with the pizza and hot dogs). I love brunch. More than anything. I could eat brunch for almost every meal, except for the ones where I eat Vietnamese or pasta. But, although he graciously squires me to brunch almost every weekend (and occasionally more than once in a weekend), my gentleman friend does not share my enthusiasm. It is not his power animal food. What is? Sushi. Enter Gen. Sushi BRUNCH. I can't figure out why more sushi joints have not figured out this concept; after all, they've got all the necessary ingredients. What is tomago if not a really thin omelette? What are takoyaki if not squid donuts? Gen's brunch is so fantastic, great value for your money. We had a curry soup that was a-mazing, the fish tastes fresh, the presentation is gorgeous, bringing to mind the word "bountiful". It is important to note, though, that its the timing and prix-fixe structure that are the nods to brunch, not the food being offered. This is pretty full-on sushi, not a sushi-american breakfast food hybrid. Although fortunately you can get coffee, and we found that coffee went really well with morning sushi. read more

My friends and I were headed to Brooklyn for the Murakami exhibit, and we looking for somewhere to eat afterwards. We wanted something nearby, and in keeping with the Japanese theme, we decided to get sushi. I had looked this place up on Yelp, and based on the good reviews, we decided to go here. It's a relatively small place, with artwork on the walls. The sushi itself wasn't anything spectacular. I did enjoy what I had, but it wasn't exactly mind blowing. However, everyone in my party did enjoy what they got, and the portion sizes were decent enough that no one left hungry. The presentation was nice. The only thing I felt was off was the service. It wasn't friendly, but wasn't rude. More like vaguely interested. Other than that, it was an alright place to get a quick dinner. read more

Located in Prospect Heights (gun shot!) right on Washington Ave. and St. Marks, GEN is the ultimate SUSHI haven! Since I live right around the corner from Gen, I try to support it as much as I can. During the summer the $2 house Sake, and $1 beers are prefect. They recently redecorated their patio/Garden which is the perfect place to kick back in the summer and sip on sake and fresh salmon salad (TRUST I WOULD KNOW). In all seriousness, Gen does the best Sushi in the City... I have eaten at many sushi joints, and Gen is a step ahead -a whole different level. The chefs pay close attention to presentation/detail making the food even more appetizing. They are also very friendly, and fun to hang out with...Most of their utensils (plates etc) are hand-made mostly earth tones-it gives your meal that real personality. The aura of Gen has a reggae vibe going-which I love one of the Chef's is actually a Rasta-(Japanese Rastaman!)-please keep checking my blog for udpates-I will have a special story on the chef shortly). My favorite on the menu is Saku Saku a tuna-avocado-scallion roll with macadamia nuts and crispy fried potato toppings. Godzilla rolls are great as well-Broiled eel and ripe avocado make a perfect pairing! The Rasta rolls you just have to try cause they are cute! Wash it down with a dry and refreshing sake, opt for Suijin-(40% proof!). My favorite night at Gen was when I had my graduation party many summers back when my folks were visiting. It was one of my favorite nights of the year...All my good friends were there, and most importantly- moms and pops who mean the world to me! I tried the Umeshiso for $3.5 and the Kanpyo for $3.5. The umeshiso tasted weird and the kanpyo was normal, good. These rolls are meant to besmall because te taste of the filling is strong. It's definitely a small snack size, that you can pop into your mouth and have it in one bite. I didn't stay in, I had take out, and the wait wasn't that long. read more

This place has gone downhill in the past 12 months. I want to blame it on management or the fact that they are complacent with current business, but I won't. That's the easy way out! Within the past 12 months the food and service has somewhat deteriorated. Waiters are cold and not very friendly. EVEN THE JAPANESE ONES! Are they as bummed as every other New Yorker for being in New York? Are they missing Japan and can't afford to go back cause they are a waiter at a small local Japanese shop? I'm not sure. The food is also lacking. I am not sure what is happening, but the fish isn't as fresh and the rice is a little too heavy for the fish. Regardless, I used to love this place when it first opened 3 years ago, and still think their garden is beautiful. What made me want to go here was looking over their menu online. They had some interesting rolls that I wanted to try so I decided to go and try them out. The inside seating area is not very big. They do have sushi bar and outdoor seating. I wasn't able to see how big the seating area was. The service was okay. The sushi rolls, not good. The two rolls that caught my eye when I first looked over the menu were the Saku Saku and the Melting in Your mouth. The fish did not taste fresh, the rolls were poorly assembled and loose, and the flavor was bland. Again, very very disappointed. read more

Whatever I said about Gen before, I double say it now. Had the most amazing meal ever last night there. They had a black cod baked in salt as a special. Sounds gross, right? We asked about it and the waiter's eyes lit up and he got so excited his already not-so-perfect English got even more garbled. Not knowing what we were ordering but dying of curiousity due to his excitement, we got it. Caked in an inch-thick wall of salt, it came out looking like a calzone and feeling like terra cotta. They give you this wooden bat and I whacked the salt crust till it cracked, and we pulled it off. Inside is an entire fish, steamed to utter perfection. You peel the skin off, and dig in. It was so moist and tender and delicious, I have never had anything like it. The waited came back, still super excited, and explained that even in Japan this fish is a big deal and special occasion food. He really cared that we enjoyed it. I came here with my sister when she visited, and while our dining experience was fun, I was disappointed in a few areas. Even though we arrived very early (we were the first ones to show up for dinner), the service was pretty slow and I felt like we kept getting forgotten about. As the meal progressed, the intervals between seeing our server got longer and longer, and our frustration increased exponentially. We ended up having to ask a completely different waiter for our bill. As for the sushi, it was fine. It was serviceable. Kind of bland. Not what I remember it being. Had to ask for more wasabi. It's hard to give a place 5 stars after only one try. But I always appreciate a Japanese owned Japanese sushi restaurant. I have major issues with Chinese owned sushi joints. I am Chinese and I know the difference between the foods. My group really enjoyed our food. I had the "Funky Wild Chirashi" and it was a treat. It's a nice combination of cooked and raw fishes that came with wild brown rice. It was a very well put together meal that offers something different. Plus it came with 2 pieces of Ankimo sushi! Amazing. Service for three at 6:30pm was good and the prices are average. I look forward to trying this place again. read more

I was brought here by a friend and I had the most amazing experience! We both had the sake and unfiltered sake combination. I drank the unfiltered sake and it was really good. We shared the edamame and the shrimp/vegetables tempura which were good, but the Kakuni ( Braised Pork ) was so delicious! It melts in your mouth. A true delicacy! Afterwards, we shared a plate of sushi, which included my favorites: Salmon, Tuna and Eel sushi among others. I had never tried Uni before and I was transported to the ocean while eating it, so good! lol. The Ikura was excellent, it's like eating liquid salmon, so tasty! Best Japanese and sushi place in Brooklyn around Prospect Heights, Park Slope, Boerum Hill, Ft Greene, Clinton Hill, etc area. If you're looking for fusion Japanese or Asian, you've come to the wrong place. This is more of a "purist" or classical/customary menu in re Japanese cuisine. Some might hate it but more often than not, Asian cuisines are best kept separate. How often do you find killer Pad Thai (Thai) or Moo Shoo Pork (Chinese) at a Japanese place, or vice versa ? You shouldn't. It's one of the few bastions of cuisine that should more often than not stay orthodox and be cooked by skilled chefs or dare I say chefs of the race in question. Not very PC, but there is a difference when Japanese cook Japanese, Chinese cook Chinese, et al. More often than not it matters. With that being said, Gen's main owner and chef is Japanese and he knows what he's doing. If you want good and fresh authentic Japanese food, then this is your place. While Curry Rice may not seem to be an authentic dish, it's a staple of Japan due to Indian influence from years ago. It's kind of like Mac and Cheese in Japan. While I'm only half-Japanese and grew up in NY, I know a little about Japanese culture due to visits and family. Curry Rice was a staple of my family and is ubiquitous in Japan. While my Mom's has different veggies and toppings on her version, Gen's is excellent and I highly recommend it-total comfort food. The rolls come in large portions and everything is fresh and excellent. There are some "Americanized" Japanese dishes like Chicken Teriyaki, and there's nothing wrong with that. Theirs is very good. Everything I've had from the gyoza, to edamame, to the negimaki is excellent. I've had terrible Japnese appetizers from other Asian restaurants. When seemingly simple appetizers come to you overlooked, dry or like the wilted and soggy edamame I had recently from an Asian fusion place (my mistake), you realize it matters where the food is sourced and who cooks it sometimes. Not that I'm against it all the time. But if you know where I'm coming from you'll understand and know what I mean. Anyway, Gen is a gem to Brooklyn and I'm sure you won't be disappointed unless you're looking for Godzilla Maniac or Justin Beiber rolls. Please. read more

Although I appreciate the funky atmosphere, the sushi doesn't cut it for me. I ordered both sashimi and some of their specialty rolls. The first bite of Spanish Mackerel was slightly too opaque with a moderately chewy texture- indicating that it was not very fresh. The rest of the sashimi had the same disappointing taste. As for the sushi rolls, two of the 4 we ordered were not tightly rolled, so they continuously fell apart. I wouldn't mind that so much if the flavors were great- however,they were not. The Spicy Citrus Salmon sounded excellent, but the proportions were off which made it taste heavy and almost greasy. The servers were friendly, but not that helpful with the menu. It may have just been an off night, but I'm not sure if I would try them again. read more

Gen is yet another reason to love Prospect Heights. It's may not be the best sushi you'll ever eat, but I think it's the best you'll find in the area (hands down better than Geido and Taro). The fish is consistently fresh and the rolls are creative, at times even whimsical. On my last visit, I enjoyed the tuna-avocado roll with macadamia nuts and crunchy potato crisps on top. Maybe not something you'd find in Japan, but then again, we're not in Japan. The tempura is expertly fried, light and crisp without much grease. We tried the pumpkin, which was soft, supple, and salty. Seafood Sukiyaki was tasty and refreshing. Generous portions of fish, shrimp, and vegetables tasted of the sea without tasting fishy, if you know what I mean. I've brought a few Japanese friends who concur the food is tasty and often quite authentic. Worth the trek to Washington Ave if you're in the Slope. read more

When I get sushi at a moderately to cheaply priced establishment, I am usually all about value. Give me lots of delicious fish for not so much money, and you have a friend in me. However Gen is in an interesting place where they substitute some value for creativity. The creativity is what will bump this up from three to four stars. Right now the value part of my brain keeps sending me red signals. You had to order food after eating the omakase the last time you were there! Remember that time when you needed extra rice to go with the curry roll? This rating is wrong!!! Settle down value brain. If Gen were the kind of place that just served up a couple rolls with the standard dozen types of fish, charged more because it's not a take out joint, you'd be right. But sometimes, something different is required. I like that Gen does specials that change and are interesting. I like that there is a dinner vibe at 9:45 PM on a Sunday. I like that its an enjoyable experience that makes me look forward to going back. I like all of it enough to get that fourth star. read more

I found this place to be absolutely awesome. One sushi chef had dreadlocks. Another was in drag. But that, though intriguing, was not the appeal. The appeal was the dishes I ordered: 1. Abstract Garden: four different pieces of sushi put together in very unusual ways. There was some monkfish on a slice of lemon, a cold noodle salad topped with crab, chopped bluefish on a cucumber and a fourth item that has slipped my mind. 2.Kalbi: wowza this was a nice piece of meat: tender and deliciously fatty. Ok. So my friend from Denver came to visit a month after writing my last review, and she was really craving sushi. My roommate and I took her to Gen since it was so conveniently located and the sushi was usually pretty good. The three of us ordered sushi, and we all enjoyed it (can't remember exactly what we got). Nothing out-of-this-world, but good. I was pretty mortified when the manager approached me at the end of the meal and asked me if I wrote the review about "the bone in the sushi." Yep, that was me. He graciously apologized and explained that all the fish is deboned by hand, and that it's rare for this to ever happen. I guess I was just unlucky...anyway, it was nice of him to personally talk to me (as embarrassing as it was). It's definitely the most authentic Japanese restaurant in this area so I'm looking forward to going back and giving it another shot. read more

The outdoor area is super cute and the restaurant is really cozy. they always have unique specials to try, sometimes they are things you would never have imagined together. The service is really nice, although I was there recently and the waitress was a little pushy in her recommendations, hence the 4 stars, instead of 5. I live right around the corner from Gen and absolutely LOVE IT! D and I usually go at least once a week. The fish is always incredibly fresh and their sashimi is some of the best I have ever had. Especially the salmon. We haven't tried any of the kitchen entrees, we keep wanting to, but it's impossible for me to go there and not get the sashimi dinner. It's SO good! Also, the mega godzilla roll is fantastic. They make their own soy sauce too and it's quite tasty! The miso soup is just okay, but the ginger dressing on the house salad is great, so I recommend getting the salad with your dinner. They also offer a really good wild rice instead of white rice which I love. It can take a while to get your food, but as someone else mentioned it takes time to prepare really well made sashimi, sushi, and maki. They also have a really cute backyard patio which is great to eat in on nice days. read more

Called ahead and they said come by in 35 - 40 minutes. So, 40 minutes later I walk over and it's not ready. No big deal, I think. I can wait for 5-10 minutes... 25 minutes later, I'm still standing there wondering if it's gonna be ready soon. I tried to catch one of the waitresses' eye, but they just weren't being receptive. Like, at all. Finally someone brings me the food and I notice it's been 35 minutes since I walked in the door, which makes it over an hour since I placed the order. I'm all for good food taking a while and sushi definitely should, but a) they could have estimated better and told me it would take longer when I called or b) been like "hey, we're kinda backed up, it's gonna be another half-hour" when I came in to pick it up. I would've walked around or just went home, rather than look/feel like an idiot standing in the entrance of this quaint (read: small) corner restaurant. At any rate, I mostly enjoyed the food (the lobster tempura was tasty, but the salmon sashimi had brown around one of the edges --not good), but they didn't give us chopsticks, which made it a LOT less enjoyable. Imagine yourself walking down Washington Avenue. You see what looks like an adorable Japanese restaurant, so you decide to go in and order. It appears that there is a sushi bar, where food is being made, but somehow 10, 20, 30, 40 minutes go by and NOTHING appears at your table. You are stumped. There was a delightful waiter who took your order and it looks like there is a kitchen where food is coming out, but somehow you have found yourself sitting for an hour with not one morsel in front of you. You ask to speak to the manager who is astounded that you had come to his restaurant with the intention of eating. Welcome to Gen. Don't go to this restaurant if you actually plan on eating dinner. Though it might be a good place to introduce Grandma to what hipsters look like. read more

A little out of the way Japanese spot with some delicious food. We went as a detour from the Brooklyn Museum (about 8 blocks away). The sushi was very fresh and the portions were very well sized. Prices were about average for good Brooklyn Japanese food. The pumpkin tempura (appetizer) was delicious as was the more traditional Sukiyaki. The only detractor really was the service, which seemed a little spotty. read more

A friend of mine and I decided to come here after the "Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Sakura Matsuki Festival," because if you know me I live life in themes!!! So clearly we had to eat Japanese after the Sakura Festival. It was so perfect!!! Luckily we got there before the rush of people, so we were greeted and seated quickly. And to make my heart flutter with Sakura joy, they had a special "Sakura Menu" for that weekend only. The food was amazing. Some of the best dumplings I've ever had, it was a bit of a wait but when they arrived did the cloud part ways so the sun could shine down on the glory of those babies. Highly recommend this little piece of Japanese heaven. A great place to eat after a stroll in the park, to just have some good food and reflect on a good life. Or def. consider heading here before the Sakura Festival, and grabbing a bunch of thing to go... and having a beautiful Japanese themed picnic at the festival with good food, at a great price. And skip the lame, over priced food they sell at the festival. Def. looking forward to heading back over to Gen, and checking g out what other exciting limited time menu options they would have in the future. read more

I guess I had really high hopes for this place after reading all the reviews...it was good...but it's not Taro. I am spoiled by that place, for real. Cute place though. Service was slow, but friendly. Our order of edamame was forgotten about until we reminded them. The seared tuna was alright - it was kinda stringy and tough to chew instead of the "melt in your mouth" way it should be. The fried chicken was good but a little greasy [yea, I know it's fried chicken...]. I ordered the Red Dragon Roll anticipating some good salmon, only I didn't read the menu closely enough because it was actually topped with smoked salmon. It was good, but I really wanted some raw fish! Next time, I'll be more apt to try the regular sushi and sashimi and report back on that. read more
