We asked for a roll without avocado because we are allergic, but they missed that. No damage was done because we just removed the avocado and ate the rest. My wife and I are not fussy like that ;) I'm considering it an aberration caused by us being the first in the door on the day. They made one big mistake, but otherwise it was a good experience. What would have been a 4 is now a 3 star. The service was quick and easy. The outdoor space was particularly good, the wood slats (I think) keep it a few degrees cooler than outside which is a blessing on hot days. The presentation of the food was good. I would recommend as a date spot given the caliber of the food and the ambiance (they have a lovely outdoor space in the back and they are apparently working on adding a sake speakeasy/ secret sake bar as well). We were a few steps ahead of the table seated next to us and they were so impressed with the food that arrived to our table that they replicated our order! By far, the best sushi I had in Brooklyn. The fish was extremely fresh (I know because I ate sashimi mainly). There was a perfect balance between atmosphere, freshness, portions, presentation and service at this fusion- sushi restaurant. They have local artists work displayed for sale in the front of the restaurant, and the semi-outdoor seating in the back is the most pleasant experience. Their saki selection is pleasing to the eye, and the Nabeyaki Udon soup is enough for two. If you're in the area, I'd stop in for a bite! read more

I have to say, coming from San Francisco I was pretty freaking skeptical about eating sushi in NY. My first thought was "it's going to taste like Chain store sushi" But little I knew I was wrong. My Cousin told me about this place named Gen about a block away from his place, he swore it was the best sushi in NY... Went an ordered the 7 piece sushi... HOLLY CRAP!!! The white Tuna, salmon and Yellow tail were specially OUT of this world. It was so fantastically awesome. Not to mention the staff is super friendly and Reggae it's played all night long. Came around 3 on Sunday. They didn't have the regular menu which included the sashimi combo I wanted (avoiding rice at the moment) so I ordered the wild rice chirashi. It came with a soup or salad. I got the miso soup which was ok. The chirashi came on a beautifully arranged wooden tray with a big bowl of the wild rice topped off with sashimi, I think about 7-8 pieces that included salmon, tuna, fish roe, shrimp and others. It also included, edamame, a small bowl of ceviche-type fish with tomatoea, and two slices of egg tart - type thing (not good with remembering all the Japanese names). Overall, very good for the price $14.50. I skipped the rice and edamame so can't attest to it but the rest was very good. -.5 star for the extra warm temp inside. On a Friday night at 9 pm, there was still a 20 minute wait, so I just hung out outside, there is a bench. The restaurant is a snug fit, but it works. I am excited about their summer garden, which is supposed to be open now, but I guess the rain and cold weather is stopping them from seating people there. As an appetizer, I decided to try the Conch, I have seen Andrew Zimmerman eat these fresh off the coast of Africa and I was like, damn, that looks good. Maybe he made it look better than it was or the $10 price tag dampened my taste buds, but the conch was not as orgasmic as expected. It was sort of like giant clam, expect a lot more dry, and a lot stiffer. There was also no hint of the ocean, briny taste that lingers on most creatures of the sea. So, if you had this before and you love it, go for it. But, if you are looking for something new to try, maybe go for the Red Uni instead. I ordered the sushi deluxe - 10 pieces of sushi and 1 roll - for $18. Here's the line up: 2 pc. tuna - The tuna was soft and not sinewy. Color was vibrant. 1 pc. white tuna - Very fresh and buttery. 1 pc. shrimp - Standard. 2 pc. white fish - Tender and slightly sweet. 1 pc. mackerel - Salty and satisfying. 2 pc. salmon - Great color and a huge piece. 1 pc. salmon roe - More on the salty side, but great. i white tuna roll with 6 pieces - I don't like rolls much, but the white tuna was definitely fresh here and made its stamp in the roll. A standout Japanese restaurant in Prospect Heights, this place appears like any other... however, I've decided to come twice to give you an assessment of both their lunch and dinner service. A quick short and sweet "Great sushi, great appetizers and great service!" just won't do... I ordered the chicken katsu dinner the first time through and it hit the spot. The chicken was breaded and fried perfectly, and the complimentary soup/salad were prepared as-expected. For lunch, I had the takoyaki as an appetizer and shrimp tempura udon. Once again, the tempura was batter and fried well and the takoyaki came out just as how I've imagined it at other top notch japanese establishments in the city... topped the bonito flakes waving from the heat emanating below. The presentation was what sets itself apart along with the decor from other sushi restaurants in BK... on par with other Manhattan counterparts, but nothing to knock your socks off, which is why this place is deserving of 4-stars. Delicious, fresh sushi, prepared with obvious care and attention to detail. Hand-ground wasabi. We loved every bite of the sushi sampler and the citrus salmon roll. Really impressive sake selection, including aged dessert sake. The mochi dessert with the fresh strawberry, red bean mochi, matcha powder and ice cream was perfect. Service was warm and attentive with great recommendations. I can't wait to try the dumplings next time - they smelled absolutely amazing. The only drawback for us was that there was a loud group in the back corner and the way the restaurant is designed, if someone is being loud the sound echoes all around and it becomes impossible to hear your dining companion. I noticed that most of the poor reviews for this darling gem of a restaurant are left either by people dining in big groups or trying to get takeout. Hot tip: Maybe just don't do those things? Gen is one of those sushi experiences where you sit there and say this is better than good sushi, and that Gen's sushi might be the best sushi I've ever had. The soft white rice, the perfect proportioned pieces with flavorful and delightful fish, a crisp and flavorful ginger salad, raw octopus with pickled seaweed and cucumber, seared tuna belly with a deep grilled flavor, salmon and asparagus a perfect pair, tender yellow tail and very fresh scallion, delightful miso soup (which was complimentary for our roll taking longer than expected), and a wonderfully long sake list to peruse. Great sake options--more expensive than most sushi places, but the kinda I've tried were so good it didn't matter. My husband and I took our daughter here for her birthday. I had never been to the restaurant before but my husband had. The waitress was really nice and helpful. The food was very good. I opened for 2 stars because the restaurant was so dirty. We are outside on the patio and it is in poor shape and is very dirty. When we were leaving I scrutinized the floors, corners and surfaces throughout and was appalled by the lack of cleanliness. I like a clean restaurant in general but this pandemic has heightened my need for all things being clean. I absolutely love the weekend brunch here. Came here a few months ago for a friend's birthday and returned for Father's Day (came close to closing and there was nobody but us). Me and my fiancé were walking around prospects heights on a hot Saturday and wanted something more than a snack but less than a meal. Something cold and tasty. Sushi!! We searched for what was around and rated well. We decided to check out this place. We got the 3 sushi roll special for $14 and choose the tuna, salmon and eel/cucumber roll. They were all super delish. Hit the spot. I think I liked the eel best, but maybe cause I love the dark eel sauce they use! Their special rolls looked really good. I want to go back to try some of the other dishes. With summer here, I am sure the craving will strike again. Looking forward to going back soon! Oh and staff were nice! The attention to detail is what sets this place apart !! It is reasonably priced for such a nice presentation. The staff is friendly and attentive. The level of service and quality is something out of midtown. They seem to promote the specials....but cost is reasonable even for the blue fin. The fat content was way above average and it melted in my mouth. Rolls were well rolls had a uni special roll and it was good, a little sweet but still fresh none the less. The whole grilled mackerel was not over cooked and had a nice crispness to it. I will come back and see if the dining experience was so wonderful because I had Japanese company !!! read more

I've been here 3 times for chirashi and I've had some of their sushi once. It's great for the price. Chirashi is quite fresh on Tuesdays, assuming that's when they get their fish. Monday is closed. In fact today is Tuesday. I ordered for pickup towards the end of lunch. They cut their fish sloppily and omitted ginger and wasabi, but it didn't matter. This place is excellent. The menu is diverse and interesting, and every item we sampled was perfectly prepared. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the decor inside is reminiscient of the tiny, family-owned places I loved in Japan. I am not the biggest sushi fan (is my Brooklyn card revoked?). I love other types of Japanese food (katsu, tempura, udon, yakitori, etc.), but I feel like most Japanese restaurants in NYC are so sushi-heavy that, unless I specifically visit a ramen joint, it's hard for me to have a full, satisfying meal. Not here! The menu is really imaginative and I got to try a variety of delicious dishes that weren't all focused on raw fish (though you can easily focus on raw fish, if you're into that!). My husband and I shared grilled octopus balls (takoyaki) that rivaled the ones we tried in Tokyo. Slightly spicy salmon-stuffed shishito peppers. A beautifully-grilled piece of yuzu-marinated salmon. I did try some sushi, just for kicks, and...I loved it. I ordered the citrus salmon and soft-shell crab special rolls, but my favorite was my husband's toro aburiyaki: lightly seared tuna with avocado. I've had similar rolls before, but something about this toro made me say, for the first time at an NYC sushi joint, "I LOVE THIS. I would order this again." I did, and I really, really would. Also, the wine is on point! Wine is understandably an afterthought at a lot of neighborhood Japanese places, but I'm not a big beer drinker and I wasn't in a sake mood, so I got a pinot noir because I figured it wouldn't overpower the fish. It was excellent. It capped off my ideal Japanese meal: fresh grilled fish prepared in imaginative ways, a bit of delicious sushi, and a large pour of a subtle wine. Nom. Finally, our server was delightful: attentive and personable. She had a lot to do, and yet she was always around just when we wanted to ask for something. Reading the reviews of Gen Inc, I thought it would be an awesome place in Brooklyn. We arrived on a Thursday evening and found it empty-- not a good sign. SERVICE: The wait staff pretty much did everything they possibly could to ensure we would leave quickly. The waitress immediately told us the kitchen was closing, even though we were there around 10pm and the website said it was open until 11:15pm. We had to wait over 15 minutes just to get a glass of water. FOOD: We ordered a house salad and sushi rolls. I got the house salad and the "melting in your mouth" roll and a regular spicy tuna roll. The house salad was nothing to write home about and was slathered with a heavy miso-laden dressing. The rolls I ordered were average. The spicy tuna roll also had a miso sauce on top that was not tasty. The "melting in your mouth" was poorly made-- it was falling apart and difficult to eat. My boyfriend's sushi was also poorly wrapped and that made it difficult to eat, with fingers or with chopsticks. PRICE: About $33 for 1 house salad, 3 basic sushi rolls, and 1 specialty sushi rolls. Decent. OVERALL: Although the price was right, I was unimpressed with the service and the food of this place. If you boast sushi on your menu, then learn how to roll a basic sushi roll that actually stays together when you eat it. Will not be returning. read more

I came here for dinner yesterday and everything was incredible. I started with the buta kakuni, which absolutely melted in my mouth. It was velvety and was falling apart in my chopsticks! The flavor was rich and paired well w the mustard sauce it came with; definitely the best pork belly I've had in some time. Next I had the chirashi, which was very solid and had a wide variety of fish. I love daifuku and was elated to see it on the dessert menu here, since it has been some time since I've had it. The soft mochi with rich red bean and refreshing strawberry inside was exactly what I wanted after my satisfying meal. It even came with a side of matcha ice cream, which was rich and delicious. A sushi restaurant in Prospect Heights is like a flower in a weed garden. Too bad the food wasn't up to par. I had my immediate suspicions because the waitresses were attractive. Pretty girls make graves not sushi. I should have listened to these divine oracles, for the old adage turned out to be true. The miso was salty. The Red Uni, a welcome rare offering, tasted fine... but the portion was much too small. This goes true with the sashimi pieces on the dinner plate. Some of the pieces were so small, it seemed like the chef had taken a regular piece and cut it in half. More importantly, the fish was merely edible. The salmon came stuck to a slice of lemon, perhaps to hide the fact that the fish wasn't super fresh. Also the girl forgot our drink orders. You get less hot every time you forget my Sapporo. My julie told me that the food was normally better; that I was there on an off night. If you're a fan of inconsistency, by all means check it out. I thought I was in Samurai Champloo. I got their lunch special which was a lot more food than I thought. Soup, sushi, tempura sides and grilled stuff. Dope. That was years ago though.
