I hate to do this because this is always a go to spot on my visits to Brooklyn.... My visit here on Thursday night was lacking good service. We were seated promptly on a busy Thursday night, but the good service ended there. The table ordered a bottle of hot sake and the waiter brought us the bottle and no glasses. When we asked for glasses, he seemed annoyed by us. Our table ordered various sushi dishes that were all great, but they gave my friend something completely different from what she had ordered. She then had to wait additional time while they prepared a new dish. By the time she got her food, most of us were done eating. Our waiter stood with his arms crossed staring at the door the entire time. He looked like more of a bouncer than a waiter with this stance and it was off putting. The food is good, but with service like that..... I don't think I'll be back for a long time. read more

I would recommend sticking to the rolls and soups here, as those were the highlights of our visit. Unfortunately, the vegetable and tofu teriyaki fell short (the tofu was steamed) and the dish lacked flavor overall. The yaki udon was also underseasoned and did not meet expectations. When we shared this feedback with the staff, we were informed that the items could not be removed from the bill per the owner (because they already made it and we ordered it) so we ended up taking the uneaten portions home since we had to pay for it. While we understand that policies may vary, this was disappointing given the quality of the dishes. We did not take many photos, as others in our party ordered these items. Additionally, there was a large birthday celebration taking place during our visit, and much of the staff's attention seemed focused on that group. Attentive and quick service, incredible lunch pricing, tasty food--it was a great deal for a spur of the moment late lunch. We shared a Hana roll and their famed Monkey roll, then each got our own salmon teriyaki. The salmon skin was well rendered and crispy, full of flavor. The veggies were fresh, abundant, and flavorful. We can see why the monkey roll is so popular! The Hana roll with the fried green onions was incredible. I went back here a while ago for dinner. This place as per usual was quite crowded and the prior time I had gone here, I actually couldn't get a seat as there was a small line out the door. It's not like this place is tiny but it's popular among the locals. I got green tea as per usual though they do have some beers on the menu. The staff was friendly as per usual. I went with the Dinner Bento Box which is around $21 or so. It comes with your choice of two options along with Miso Soup, Shumai, House Noodles, and a Green Salad. Among the options which includes mixed sashimi and sushi, they uniquely have Ahi Tuna Teriyaki and I went with that along with the Grilled Beef Scallion Roll AKA Beef Negimaki. The tuna was legitimately delicious being buttery and tender and I would honestly go back here just to get this again as a solo plate as you can order this alone which comes with your choice of rice or noodles. The bland vegetables below aren't exactly needed but whatever as it's extra things to dip in the teriyaki sauce. The beef scallion was pretty much the usual outside of it being slightly better quality than the average Japanese spot which is expected with the high ratings and everything. The rest of the dish was okay outside of the particularly good miso soup. The miso soup came with some salmon in it which was unique and quite tasty. The two shumai were very likely frozen and the salad had the same generic ginger based dressing you typically find in Japanese spots. The noodles also needed a bit more flavor. There was plenty of them but I think adding a bit of sesame oil would help a lot as the texture is decent enough. If the rest of the dish was as good as the tuna, I likely would be updating this spot to 5 but I'll maintain the 4. The prices are still very reasonable for the quality as well. read more

This is the quintessential neighborhood sushi restaurant! Are you going to get a 21-piece omakase from a chef who has prepared food for royals? NO. You're going to get consistently good food and drinks at SUPER cheap prices. And that's the name of the game when it comes to local, no frills sushi places. The interior is pretty small, with a few tables for two and for four. Not the best for larger groups. The quality here is above average, but the value is off the charts! In January 2024 I ordered edamame, a specialty sushi roll, and two beers, all for about $30 including tax and tip! Don't come here if you're looking for the best sushi in the city. I love ordering their sushi by the piece (tuna and yellowtail are my fav) and they've always tasted fresh. Their rolls are on the larger side, and they are filled with a lot of protein and wrapped in a lot of rice. But the best part about Iron Chef House? The lobster ramen. It is sooo delicious. A nabeyaki udon is one of those Japanese dishes that looks simple and easy, but is actually fiendishly difficult to get right. First, the broth. It must first taste clear and bright, developing complexity as you consume the bowl. Hence, the best restaurants like this one serve it scaldingly hot in a hot earthenware bowl. As it came from the kitchen, the broth was elegant and complex, with notes of all the seafood ingredients being used. I could taste the mussels, and scallops, and squid, and kanikama (Japanese imitation crab sticks). None stood up, but each present and supporting the starchiness of the udon noodles. As I progressed through the dish, because of how hot the dish was served, some of the starch from the noodles mixed with the broth to increase the unctuousness of the broth... until by the end, the bowl was cool enough for me to pick up to down every drop. read more

The space is very attractive, inviting, and clean, with some of truly exceptional service - especially given the somewhat out-of-the-way location. During our visit here, the staffers were not only attentive, but they were also very friendly and welcoming :-) Everything we tried here was not only tasty, but beautifully presented.  Portion sizes aren't so large that you need to order less food, but big enough that you won't go home hungry. read more

This is a really good place for Japanese. It's very affordable. The food is fresh and tasty. The chicken fried rice is very good, probably the best restaurant fried rice that I've ever had, and I'm extremely picky about fried rice. The portion is also great for the price. Bad: Food - I found 2 hairs in my rolls. I'm convinced that there was probably more I just didn't find. Also, the rolls in general are just inferior. Iron Chef serves great sushi in Brooklyn Heights. There are several unusual creations on the menu that are well worth trying, not the least of all the Monster appetizer which lives up to its name in every way. I absolutely loved the contrast of the crisp bowl, the fresh fish, sweet mango and multitude of sauces although I unfortunately also found some fish scales is mine (hence only 4 stars). Another real highlight for me are some of the specialty rolls rolls like Hard Rock as they are wrapped in rice paper instead of nori, and the crabmeat and pork dumping bun popped like little parcels filled with deliciousness in the mouth. We were visiting the Brooklyn Heights area when we happened upon this low-key sushi eatery. It was late afternoon, perfectly between lunch and dinner, so we had no problem being seated. We were also not feeling too hungry so we decided to split a sushi platter for some diversity and to stave off our appetite until a proper mealtime. We are very glad to have stumbled upon Iron Chef House as the sushi was very fresh and a great price compared to similar spots in Manhattan. Staff was friendly and their outdoor area seemed cool and fun. Nothing to worry about regarding Covid protocols, etc. We would love to return next time we are in the area! This place looks humble from the outside but the food is anything but. The flavor was amazing and the service was really some of the best I've received in a long time. The staff was super friendly and gave us all the time and space to order, eat, and chat. It's nice to not feel rushed and actually get to enjoy the atmosphere of a place. My husband and I stopped in here to fulfill a craving for sushi ! The place was pretty empty however it was a weekday afternoon so I suppose that's expected. The place is relatively small and easy to walk pass. We ordered a few rolls as well as the dumplings. The dumplings were the best we have had in a while. The sushi wasn't anything special and I was surprised considering they had a voted best sushi in brooklyn sign from some publication on their window. There well a lot of little flies flying around the soy sauce and that was quite annoying and a bit unsanitary. Yelp tells me my original review was 8 years ago. Updating in 2024, Iron Chef House is still an undisputed gem of a place, with incredible attention to the quality of the fish. I don't like any fish other than sushi, so I have a real aversion to anything "fishy" but at the same time, wanting the flavor only very fresh raw fish provides. This is a solid sushi spot. Each time I've ordered delivery or rocked a lunch special, the rolls have been solid, the fish tasty, and everything taken care of efficiently. They go a little heavy on the rice for my taste, but you can do a lot worse in the area. Personally, I prefer to go with a regular sushi dinner, but if you're interested in the wild Americanized rolls with spicy tuna and mayo and crazy names, they do that and they do it well. No judgment here either. I also love when they fry tempura crunchies and stuff as many different non-Japanese things into a roll as possible, I'm just trying to be a little healthier, and I don't think all those Japanese folks are living to be 100+ because of all the cream cheese.
