Signature Tokyo banana (pudding) dessert
Alex W.

After my first visit: This is my favorite ramen restaurant on the planet. It's my perfect restaurant - but not because of the ramen. Because of the desserts! First - Tonkotsu (pork) ramen was perfectly balanced. The broth was deeply flavorful but not heavy, almost like an 80/20 hybrid of tonkotsu and shoyu (soy sauce) ramen. Noodles were springy and not overcooked, and the roasted pork had a slightly smoky flavor and was flavorful itself, not just protein and texture like many other ramen joints. We also had the edamame appetizer - super flavorful and addictive, and we wound up ordering a second one (for our party of four) after devouring the first one. Now here's why it's my favorite ramen restaurant- my favorite dessert is banana pudding, and Tonchin's signature Tokyo banana dessert is an elevated banana pudding that makes magnolia bakery look like amateur hour. Plenty of fresh banana and a carmelized banana on the side with a balanced pudding that's not too heavy - this is peak banana pudding. So it has my favorite ramen and favorite dessert. But can it do better? Yes. It can also have...my second favorite dessert! Tonchin has excellent shave ice desserts that reminded me of Korean bingsu. We had the strawberry and it was fresh, bright and had lots of strawberry flavor. Delightful. Service was excellent and the ambiance of the space is dark and elevated. I liked this place so much I bought a hat.

I didn't have a reservation but I put my name in around 6pm on a Friday and the wait was about an hour. The menu is through a QR code. We were a party of 6 and got seated at the booth but it was very tight. The broth was fairly rich and decently priced. Not too spicy. My favorite was the eel rice roll. I like how they cut the eel and it was not too much sauce. The potato and crab salad was too sour for my liking, but good portion. The star was the mango shaved ice which I'd order again. It was so big and had chopped mango pieces in the center of the ice. Our server, maybe it was because she was busy with her other tables but it was hard to get her attention.

Every dish was amazing, I was so impressed! The appetizers (cucumbers, shishito peppers, edamame) were all so unique, and the tonkotsu ramen was absolutely perfect. The fried fish bun was delicious. The mango kaki-gori was AMAZING, but it's huge, you need like 4 people to eat it. The service was extremely fast, even though they were so busy. It's pretty casual inside, but it's great for a date night or dinner with friends.

I have been wanting to try this ramen spot for a while now and I'm glad I did. The restaurant can be easily missed since it doesn't look so big outside. However, once you enter, it's a cozy long place with a few cute booths and tables. It ends with an open kitchen. The service was super quick and efficient! I ordered the Tebasaki 8pcs chicken wings that were peppery and not as crispy as I expected but still good. The only thing minor issue is that it wasn't completely seasoned evenly as you can see that only one wing had the red pepper powder on my picture. However, it was still flavorful. The Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen was very tasty! The broth was rich and creamy without being over salty. The noodles were perfectly bouncy and chewy. Although the cha-shu pork was paper thin, it was seasoned well and delicious! We finished with a shaved ice mango flavor. It was light and refreshing with little bits of fresh mango pieces. Planning to come back again and to try out other appetizers and ramen.

Smoked Dashi ramen!

Delicious ramen! I had the Smoked Dashi (pork broth with fish oil- HEAVY on the fish flavor, but so delicious). I got the lunch portion and ordered the salad as my appetizer- really flavorful kale salad. Service is great.

Spicy Tan Tan Ramen
Evan Z.

I got the spicy tan tan ramen and enjoyed it. The tonkatsu broth with miso was flavorful without needing to use an excess amount of oil, and the noodles were fresh and chewy. I also appreciated that they added a fair portion of mixins that complemented the rest of the ramen dish well. I will say that I don't think the ramen was super special or a must try, but definitely solid for satisfying a craving for ramen. The restaurant is quite busy, I went on a random weekday night and had to wait about 25 minutes for a party of 1; I believe a part of 2 was at least a hour long wait. I was seated at the bar and it was quite loud and hectic. I guess my biggest gripe with Tonchin is that I'm not a huge fan of waiting for restaurants that I don't think are super special. I did read that their chicken wings and shaved ice are popular specialty items though, so I'll definitely be back to try those next time. 4.7/5

Fried Fish Bun

Tonchin exercised every part of my palate. The yuzu marg is not to be missed: gorgeous color, fruity, yet with a great acid profile. My spicy tan tan was heavenly: generous position of noodles, melt-in-your-mouth chashu, and delightful cashews for balance and texture contrast. The fried fish bun was disappointing in comparison - light, flaky, yet mild. I went in at 2p and found a seat at the bar immediately. When it became Happy Hour at 2:30p, after two cocktails in a row were unavailable (no ingredients that day), they made it up to me with a ridiculous, complimentary portion of the house sake. It was smooth and flavorful, well short of astringent. What a meal!

TONCHIN CLASSIC TOKYO TONKOTSU & UNAGI Tokyo Rice Ball
Nahush G.

Discrete door so keep an eye out or your walk right past it. The Unagi Tokyo Rice Ball was not only delicious but it also told my fortune! The Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu was just like I remember it tasting in Japan. Silky salty pork broth for the win. Especially on a chilly night! The Chashu was tender and the egg perfectly jammy. Ok, as much as I'd come back to Tonchin in a heartbeat, I still haven't a few gripes... For one, I still haven't been to a Ramen spot in the US of A where they load it up with Chashu and Seaweed. Second, the Tokyo Banana desert was good but I don't know about $15 good... Still, solid spot and I didn't even have the wings which I kept overhearing people say were so good!

Haven't been back here in over 2 years and the first sip of my ramen was exactly how I remembered it the last time I was here! They are definitely very consistent with their bold flavors and execution. Tonchin was always one of my favorite ramen spots in nyc and it still continues to be at the top of my list. I got the classic ramen ofc and it was so delicious. Packed with bold flavor in the broth, not overly nor under salted, perfectly al dente noodles, and perfectly cooked pork slices/egg. Everything was perfect - this is what you call a perfect bowl of ramen!! This time I tried the fried chicken as an appetizer and it was SO good. It was very flavorful and perfectly seasoned. It was a bit expensive for 8 wings ($25) but totally worth it as a treat!

I thought I could come here for a quick bite before a Broadway matinee (Maybe Happy Ending--go see it!), but Tonchin was so busy! If I wasn't a solo diner, I wouldn't have been able to do it without a reservation--I was lucky to snag a place at the bar. I enjoyed the Tokyo Ramen. The broth was rich and though I loved the pork, thought they could've had more toppings given the price. Service was wonderful. The appetizers and cocktails also looked very good. My expectations were high and they were not quite met--I was overall disappointed. It was good but not as great as I was led to believe.

Mayra P.

I'm honestly not a big ramen fan, but my daughter wanted ramen and it was a cold night during our stay in New York -- so we gave it a try. Let's just say... it did not disappoint. The ramen was delicious and very flavorful, comforting and satisfying. I do wish it had been a little spicier, but even without that, it was really good. The broth and noodles were well balanced and perfect for the cold weather. There was a long wait for two, but it moved faster than expected -- about 20 minutes, which went by quickly. Service was good and efficient once seated. Definitely worth stopping by if you're craving a warm, flavorful bowl in NYC. Tonchin Ramen

Curry + Cheese Chicken Wing

This is my second time coming here for early dinner around 4pm. It was happy hour but we didn't order anything from the happy hour menu. The space is narrow but they make it work and around 5pm they switch to night mode, closing the lights and bringing out candles. They are always busy and on a time crunch to the point where it feels like you are constantly being rushed to order, eat, amove on to dessert, and leave. So make sure you reserve a spot beforehand. That's the only negative. Other than that, I think the food was wonderful. The Curry + Cheese Chicken Wings was unique and had a great kick of curry flavor. Worked really well with the parmigiano shavings. The wings were juicy and skin was crispy. The Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu and Spicy Tan Tan were both great in their own way. You can taste the restaurant's signature broth in the classic, but the addition of niko miso, crunchy cashews, and chili peppers really gave it some flavor. The Spicy Tan Tan is my favorite of the two and not too spicy in my opinion. I really liked the abundance of scallions in each bowl of ramen and how delicate the Tonkotsu was. The Mango Kaki-Gori was splendid as well, with the cream on top working really well with the tart mango pieces.

Sharon C.

My daughter and I were searching for a restaurant to grab a quick bite. Luck brought us to Tonchin. We have Raman noodle restaurants in Tulsa. This one is much different. The ambiance is trendy Asian. The service was fast and streamlined. The food was an adventure. My daughter ordered for us. I can't remember the names of the dishes, but I'm posting photos of what we ate. We started with delicious old fashions. We got a rice ball and ramen noodles. My favorite is a dish that came with lettuce and sea weed. You create your own little sushi roll by putting a piece of sea weed on top of lettuce and a filling on top of that. It created a magnificent contrast of textures and flavors. It was a delightful dining experience.

The interaction felt dismissive and unwelcoming, which made the overall dining experience uncomfortable. Customer service matters just as much as the food, and sadly this visit fell short. I only wish they offered the super spicy ramen with chili oil on the side like the good old days, but the standard spicy packs a punch too! The regular size ramen was plenty, but don't let that stop you from trying the decadent Mega with all of the toppings. The food came out hot and fast too, so my table of two was in and out in less than 45 minutes easily. The menu is pretty straightforward with few choices that are all delicious - a perfect spot for the quintessential quick bite and a fair price to match. Vibe-wise, this place is a true hole in the wall with steps leading down from street level into a basement. The inside is packed and intimate so I'd come with a small party such as a friend or a date who's into good food. There was no line when I visited on a Sunday at opening time, but it got packed quickly so be prepared to wait on the sidewalk or arrive at noon. As someone who's moved out of NYC years ago, I made an effort to visit Totto Ramen every time I come back and now Toribro has taken that spot in my itinerary.
