I went to the newest location of this excellent miniature Szechuan/Sichuan chain with a group several months ago, having been to both their Flushing and popular St. Marks location. It's the same schtick mostly when it comes to the menu, outside of missing certain dishes such as the Lamb Scorpion, a delicious dish made from lamb spine. In terms of other visits, I would recommend their Suan Cai Yu, or fish in sour and spicy cabbage soup, or the similar beef version with enoki. I heavily recommend making a reservation early if you can, as you'll otherwise have to wait a while, with there not being that much room by the entrance. We had a large group, so it took a while regardless. In terms of drinks, they have a selection of nonalcoholic drinks, wines, and a selection of baijiu. This includes them surprisingly selling a $15 100 ml bottle of Er Guo Tou/二锅头, a 54% ABV liquor that might be one of the easiest ways to get hammerered in the city. For food, they give you some free crunchy cabbage with a mild spicy kick. The other dishes were the following: Fried Shredded Eel- Deep-fried shredded eel with chili pepper and celery. $32. I found the portion a tad bigger compared to the other location, and it was pretty tasty as usual, though I, as usual, prefer getting cumin lamb over this as the texture is better and it's a bigger portion of protein. Pepper Rabbit Meat- Stir-fried spicy rabbit with hot pepper. $25. Bony is expected, but I liked the flavor. It had a good sour and spicy mix, reminding me more of Hunan or Yunnan food. Szechuan Double Cooked Pork- Pork belly, Chinese leeks, and chili pepper. $19. We got this as they were out of the country-style pork. Good version with streaky pork, which wasn't too fatty. There was also enough douchi/fermented black bean, but not too much that it was overly salty. Salted Egg Yolk Corn- Golden baked corn kernels with salted egg yolk. $18. A nice sweet bite with a bit of saltiness, which mixed well when combined with all the spicier dishes. Peppercorn Beef- Tenderloin in Szechuan peppercorn broth. $26. Good amount of tender beef, and a decent dish overall. This was the most numbing of all the dishes, along with the pepper rabbit. Fried Rice With Szechuan Pickles & Bacon. $19. Alright. I wish the rice had more smokiness from the bacon. This is yet another good location of this miniature Szechuan chain. I prefer the St. Marks location in terms of atmosphere, and maybe as there's a dish or two missing here compared to that location, but I presume this one's easier to get into. read more

Every time I come to New York, I try to get at least one Sichuan meal, and this time I picked this spot. Overall, it was a pretty good experience. The pork knuckle soup was a highlight -- they added beans to it, which gave it a really nice texture. The broth was rich but not greasy, and definitely something I'd order again. However, the "Mao Xue Wang" (spicy stew) was way too salty for my taste. The flavor was a bit overpowering and kind of masked the ingredients, which was a little disappointing. That said, this place is great for group dining -- lively atmosphere, good for gatherings, and the pricing is reasonable for NYC. Overall: solid choice for a casual group meal. The decor alone is worth it -- feels like you've been transported the second you walk in, koi pond and everything. I've been to the east village location and absolutely loved it. The midtown west location did not disappoint. The food was delicious! Each item tasted different. The corn and snow pea shoots were absolutely addictive. Both used simple flavors, but I couldn't stop munching on them. I didn't take a picture but we also had chicken giblets, which had a perfect sour and umami flavor. The service was great. They were extremely attentive and constantly filled my glass with tea. With two locations in Manhattan, this spot in Times Square has stunning Chinese interior and is a reliable spot when it comes to authentic Sichuan cuisine. Service here is excellent and fairly quick. When I came, I got their swinging pork belly, wontons in chicken soup, mapo tofu, la zi chicken, and drunken jelly (for dessert). I absolutely loved their dumplings and their la zi chicken. Mountain House is a Hells Kitchen staple. The inside is very cute and welcoming, perfect for a group dinner and the service is also good. Now for the food. The staple is the pork swing and the sauce stole the show. I ended up putting the sauce on every dish. The mapo tofu was solid - would get again. The fish soup was very bitter and not my favorite personally, but it was the first time I've tried this dish so maybe it was done well! We also got the chili chicken which was really tasty, but the dish was almost all chilis and very little chicken. The jasmine milk tea pudding is a MUST. Along Manhattan's famous Restaurant Row (46th Ave), Mountain House is an authentic Szechuan restaurant where you're greeted warmly by members of the staff in a well appointed dining room. My wife and I enjoyed a range of dishes in the beautiful first floor dining room (2nd floor is equally beautiful). We started with complimentary hot green tea along with Beef Sour Soup. The soup's broth is both sour and very spicy while the meat is very tender and delicious. We also had my favorite dish, Kung Pao Chicken which is loaded with peanuts and quite tasty. I liked this place! Me and my friends needed a late dinner option after a long day out. We put our name on the waitlist and waited around 30 minutes for a party of 4. The restaurant is surprisingly bigger than I expected since they have seating on the top floor. We ordered the green beans, ma-po tofu, swing pork belly, la-zi chicken, beef stew with potatoes, and a couple cocktails, I got the endless summer one. The ambiance of this place was so cozy with tea being served in hefty tea pots and warm lighting. Definitely have a palate for numbing spice when you come here! They do all of the dishes well but my favorite had to be the cauliflower which was deliciously cooked. When I think of the top regional cuisines defining NYC's Chinese food scene these days, I mostly think of Shanghainese restaurants, Yunnan noodles, and an increasingly large presence of Dongbei and Uighur cooking. I'd venture to guess there are fewer Szechuan restaurants today than there were in the late 90s. But Mountain House is one of the few restaurants bucking the trend, having brought a fresh, more authentic take on the region's food to Manhattan diners, with dishes like mala fish that previously were harder to come by. For a vegetarian, the options here are somewhat limited. I tried the mapo tofu which they offered without any beef, salted corn with duck egg yolk, and a stir-fried cabbage dish. First and foremost, y'all need to either have reservations or be prepared to join the waitlist. There is always a line and a wait. Today, it took us 1.5hr to be sat but that was fine because we were browsing stores nearby to pass time. There's also complimentary sweet tea while you're waiting if you choose to wait. The waitlist will text or call you when your turn is next. They have a timed seating of 1.5hrs but I still recommend this place for all group sizes. Because our wait took so long, we each got to choose a drink from the soft drinks or house special section. The service is on point here with people checking in on whether you liked the food, bringing new plates, more napkins, more tea, etc. You also get wet wipes after your meal. On the food, this is high quality Sichuan food. Everything we ordered had tons of pepper and numbing spice and we loved it. Note that you have to order rice on the side - not included with the entrees. The star for me was the bass, the flesh was so delicate and the fish was super fresh. The scallion and ginger was refreshing. My friends enjoyed the long beans and la zi chicken - super super crispy. The beef dish we ordered was also super tender and there was a bed of bean sprouts underneath which was delicious. The chicken stew has great flavor and the taro it came with was perfectly cooked. This place takes Sichuan to another level. The diced chicken with lotus roots had plenty of heat, but then four other flavors of spice kicked in from various peppers. My wife and I were impressed and I thought of some of the better curry dishes I have had. We ordered it "regular," with the thought that when you say mild or medium some of the flavor (spice) ends up being skipped. The sizzling crispy tofu was gently sweetened and true to the Chinese standard of being light and airy when you bite into it. ambiance=yes, portions=yes, sweating from the spice=yes - this place is so charming, it's two floors with low tables (many separated by pretty curtains) and somehow even with the light wood and clean interior, it maintains a cozy vibe - the cozy vibe is amplified by the complimentary green tea brought to each table with a refillable bowl of spicy cabbage - get ready for the spice level to only increase! the mapo tofu numbed my entire mouth. it was a hearty bowl of soft melt-in-your-mouth tofu swimming in chili oil and bits of beef. there was not as much beef as I like in mapo tofu and it had some chunks of fat, but the flavor was outstanding. - the kung pao chicken sweet sauce was almost mapley. the serving size was huge with chunks of perfectly cooked soft chicken and enough peanuts to feed an army - noodle dish (only one on the menu) was massive! each noodle was longer than my arm. the beef was salty and sweet and of course the whole thing had that numbing Szechuan spice - the grilled beef ribs was a ~make your own bao bun situation~ which was truly missing a sauce. the meat and buns were chewy and soft but it lacked a sauce to cancel out the dryness - chili dumplings were packed with meat and soaked in chili oil that somehow didn't cancel out the rich meat flavor - serving sizes and prices were great, you can definitely split an entree!! read more

Excited for have Mountain House in Hells Kitchen as I became a fan with the food here after my initial visit to the one in Flushing. My all-time favorite dishes are the sour cabbage & fish (get it in filet), swing pork belly, and stir fried Chinese long bean. The prices are very reasonable especially for being in midtown west. During my most recent visit, the server Steven overheard it was my birthday, gave me a beautiful chopstick and wooden spoon set as a present to celebrate my special day. This place is POPULAR! Came at 9 PM on a Friday night and there was still an hour wait. The host/manager was extremely nice and let us get seated a little earlier. All the servers were also super friendly and kind. La Zi chicken: Generous portion size. We got mild spicy so it wasn't overly spicy, but still flavorful. Green pepper Mao Xue Wang: Very generous amount of meats inside. I specifically really liked the duck blood -- the texture was very smooth and it was extremely flavorful from the soup. I prefer this dish over the normal Mao Xue Wang because it still has the numbing chili but without the excessive amount of chili oil. Spicy steamed bass: We dug into the fish so quickly I forgot to take a picture! I appreciated how they separated the meat from the bones for you. The fish was tender and perfectly cooked and nicely infused with the soy sauce. Stir fried potatoes: One of the better stir fried potatoes I've had! I enjoyed the extra kick and spices. Stir fried string beans: I personally really enjoyed this dish also. My friends thought it was a little lacking and their least favorite dish of the night but still good. Overall this place is one of the rare restaurants that I feel live up to their hype. We asked the spice level of La zi chicken to be less spicy but it was still spicy but liked the crispness of the chicken. For my solo date in New York, I was recommended by my mom's friends to check out this place. I ordered the mala intestines and they have a spicier and a more mild option so I ordered the spicer option. We ordered the Mapo-tofu, Kung pao chicken, and pork slices soup. A lot of the dishes are spicy and have a good kick, the Mapo-tofu had a little bit of a numbing spice and it was so delicious. I will come back to NY just to eat here again! The appetizer is pickled cabbage, so delicious! The service was great, very polite and proper making my friends and I content to be there. Mountain House is considered one of the best Szechuan spots in the city, even as they have grown to multiple locations throughout the city. Location of this new spot is near the theatres, which I love as it adds a solid spot for a pre show meal in an area devoid of many good options. This was my first time so we tried alot of the classics. Swing Pork Belly was my favorite and definitely not just a social media food. Loved it. The La Zi chicken was fine, but pieces of chicken were super tiny. The Mama black fish "soup" was delicious and the most intense szechuan flavor I've ever tasted. I've always wanted to try the East Village Mountain House, so was excited to try the Midtown one. Our group got the below dishes: Swing Pork Belly La-Zi Chicken Mapo Tofu Fried Rice with Special Vegetable Pea Shoots Out of the dishes, my favorite was the Swing Pork Belly and Pea Shoots. The Swing Pork Belly combined with the cucumber and sauce was a combo that I didn't expect to like so much. The Lazi Chicken was also good, though they put so much pepper corn that I felt like I had to fish for chicken bits even after we had asked for less spice. Overall, food was quite solid and would definitely try some of the other things on the menu. Ambience was nice; it's tucked away on Restaurant Row with decent seating options on the two floors with nice aesthetics. Prices are also not too bad, especially if you split with a group.
