The ambiance in here is gorgeous and a massive space. The lighting is dark and reminds me of shopping in Hollister and there's a big bar area on the main level when you enter where you can wait and relax before you're seated. I do think the place gives off some pretentious vibes and it was quite obvious we were the only Asian customers apart from 1 other person. This place is elevated overpriced Pan-Asian fusion food that I feel appeals to non-Asian people. As a Chinese person I'd never really pay these prices for this kind of food which I can get for much better at authentic local restaurants in Queens, Brooklyn or Chinatown. That said, I can see the intrigue to celebrate a birthday or event here because it's very photogenic and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. The noodles and rice dishes were fine; nothing amazing or horrible necessarily. And the mocktail was good but small and not worth $12 per in my opinion! This was basically just Americanized takeout style Chinese food in a bit of a dressed up setting. Practically all of the menu items are hiding some kind of meat product, so definitely inform your server of any dietary restrictions. My server very helpfully pointed out the small handful of dishes that were safe or could be made with minor modifications. The crispy tofu was decent, in a sweet and sour sauce. The greens had a nice garlic kick, but were otherwise a bit bland. The noodles were far too salty - they might've compensated for removing the oyster sauce by doubling the soy sauce instead. The meal worked out to around $72 for two after tax and tip. It's not super expensive for the neighborhood, but you're better off saving a few bucks and going to a takeout spot nearby instead. read more

I can tell the popularity of this restaurant is boosted by its gorgeous interior design and grand setting. As soon as you walk in, there is a cozy little speakeasy-esque bar, and several chairs for a cute waiting area. The inside is massive, and boasts 2 chandeliers followed by grand staircases. This is definitely something you don't see in NYC. With that in mind, to me the quality of a good restaurant is its food, and Buddakan just didn't stand out to me in that way. We came as a big party of 8, and didn't realize most of the dishes were for sharing. I got the mapo tofu. I understand it's more of a fusion restaurant so it may not taste authentic, but my tofu was watery and lacked spice and I didn't think it was with the price. Other friends got the crispy tofu which I preferred, but the glaze was way too sweet. To me, this location is a one and done. There was a constant stream of folks who worked there zooming around but we could never seem to get a hold of our server and had to ask other people several times. In this case, the menu wasn't vast and that's perfect because with a small menu one will believe the food will be fire. However, that wasn't the case I got the chili chicken with lobster fried rice. The lobster fried rice was good, but the chicken was as dry as a Popeyes biscuit without the a drink on the side. I probably would've choked after every bite. The lamb chops were bland and was not seasoned well. however when you dipped the lamb chops in the chili sauce that came with the chicken then it slapped. The duck was really good they perfectly balance the juices and the crispiness of the duck definitely will recommend that dish along side with the curry noodles. Those noddles were really good. For drinks, I got the espresso martini. I personally did not like it. It taste like water with a splash of espresso, granted I substitute vodka for cognac, but this substitution always taste extremely good. The service was unsatisfactory. We were seated for about 20 minutes before our waiter introduced himself and I am not over exaggerating. The one thing this place do have is an amazing atmosphere. We were there for a while so I think the table they had reserved for us had a party that was just not leaving. I would say we waited about an hour in the bar area. We were seated upstairs and had a wonderful server. The host brought us a bottle of champagne for the long wait and I thought that was very kind. We ordered a bunch of plates to share and then to drink I ordered the Blush cocktail, like a lychee martini, and it was also delicious. I can remember some of the dishes including the vegetable fried rice, the carrot dumplings (shaped like carrots... so cute), the tuna tartar spring rolls and the sizzling short ribs. Everything was just so tasty I can't really say what was my favorite. So what I can say is you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My party and I shared the dim sum tasting, kung pao monkfish and wok charred broccoli. Everything was so so delicious. There were some dim sum I wasn't too fond of - but after all, it's a tasting. Some things hit and some things miss. We did get a few scoops of vanilla ice cream for dessert. They sit it on a bed of frosted flakes (?) which I found to be perfect crunchy addition. Ice cream was so silky smooth too!   This place is gorgeous. A really elevated experience. I would say the biggest issue during the visit was that it took over 30 minutes for us to be seated once the whole party had arrived (we did have a reservation). Hope that could be improved on. The place is dark and a little loud, which can be annoying, but the ambiance is so special. What an amazing experience. Came here for dinner on a Thursday night. There is a parking garage right nearby. We booked for 2 hours and went slightly over. It was $97! I think they ripped us off as we used another garage nearby on another night and it was $20 for 2 hours. As to the restaurant, service was upscale and friendly. The place used to be a bank and the large (I mean LARGE!!) vault is now a 2 story dining area. The place is abuzz on the night we were there. Everything was excellent. Went here for the first time the other night with a group of 7. The restaurant was beautiful, similar vibe to tao if you have ever been. The service was also very good. The waiters were attentive but not overbearing. They noticed it was one of my friends' birthdays and brought over a drink and dessert at the end of the meal. A very thoughtful touch, and the reason I am giving 5 stars instead of 4. We started out with the spring rolls, cauliflower lollipops, and crispy beef lettuce cups. All were so, so good. I think overall the food was great, but the apps stood out to me more than the mains. All 3 I would order again and recommend. For mains we got the black cod, fried rice, and crispy tofu. Everything was good and very shareable, definitely try the black cod. The blush (their take on a lychee martini) was great and so was the oasis. I really enjoyed this place and am glad it lived up to my expectations as I have been wanting to come for a while. We chose Buddakan for our Thanksgiving dinner this year, but had a long wait, about 45 minutes; the staff was really gracious and ended up getting us the specific table we preferred. I appreciated that level of accommodation. The atmosphere is always a high point here. I tried both mocktails; the Reflection was the clear favorite at our table, super refreshing. For appetizers, we tried the edamame dumplings and the carrot dumplings. Both were good, but heads up to fellow vegetarians: we didn't realize the edamame was made with a non-veg broth. The carrot dumplings were excellent and definitely get my vote. For our main dishes, my vegetarian friend and I shared the mapo tofu (minus the pork), along with a side of fried rice and noodles. Everything was solid. Our non-vegetarian friends also tried a chicken dish and chicken dumplings, and they seemed very happy with their orders. Let's start with the ambiance of this place because the restaurant was a vibe. It was very dark themed but well lit and had beautiful decor throughout. I enjoyed the chandeliers, candles, and sculptures that were elegantly placed. We started at the bar which was fully stocked with a variety of Asian drinks however I was able to get a mojito which was delicious. Then we sat for dinner and ordered quite a few tasty starters. By far my favorite was the chili rock shrimp and I joked how I wanted a bowl of it for my entre. It was beautifully crisped and tender with amazing flavor, simply chefs kiss. Next we had the sweet and sour prawns with walnuts which was also incredible and full of flavor. Now on to the main course. I had the peppered beef which was nothing special but the crunchy croutons in the sauce was a nice touch. The sauce just wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. I also ordered crab fried rice on the side which flavorful but I wish it had more crab. The service was great and they took care of us well, especially being a large group. Everything was very delicious, and our waiter was great. The only service-related complaint was with water refills. There were several times I was waiting for more water, and I noticed that other servers refilling nearby tables didn't look around to see if surrounding tables also needed water, which was frustrating. Food-wise, my only note is on the rock shrimp--I wish it had a slightly sweeter flavor, as it didn't have much flavor for me. Other than that, everything was excellent, especially the chocolate cake, which was a standout. The one thing I did not like were the giant spoons placed for the desserts and small dishes .... I would say this place is literally the definition of a hidden gem because it's right next to the Chelsea market. I lived over there for awhile and never noticed it. It's so beautiful inside. I was in New York for work and had a free night. I decided to take myself to Buddakan since I'd loved it in the past. This time, major yikes. Food was fine, service EXTREMELY mediocre. Waiter came to take my order after about 5 minutes. I never saw him again. He took my entire order all at the same time, no time to enjoy drinks by themselves before ordering appetizers or mains. Appetizer came out within 10 minutes -- the ducks in a row which was adorable and got an ooooh from the next table. 10 minutes later, a busboy came to give me my plate for the next course, before I'd finished my duck. The waiter came over and said "no she doesn't need that." At which point my main course was dropped on the table and I ate it on the same tiny plate as my appetizer. Meanwhile the table next to me got different plates for each course, like 4 different people coming to check on them throughout. It was just so strange. Never was approached by the waiter to ask how my food or drink was. Never was asked if I needed anything else, another drink, anything. I was in and out within 45 minutes. I ate here a few years ago and was amazed at the service. Not so now. For a fancy restaurant I was appalled.
