Turning 40 called for a very special celebration, and my husband couldn't have picked a more meaningful place. He knows me well. Since I was born in 1986, he surprised me with a reservation at The Eighty Six, and I thought that was such a thoughtful touch. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the history of the space. Service: 3 Atmosphere: 5 Food: 2 Service was fine but felt neglected a lot throughout the evening with empty water glasses throughout our dinner and expressing my disappointment in my main course, the steak. When you do get a hold of the staff they are sweet, friendly, and knowledgeable when it comes to history of the building and food. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit for a drink and a great vibe, but getting in can be tough. The decor and lighting are beautiful, but you really need to have dinner to fully enjoy the space. I wouldn't recommend wasting your energy trying to get a table. This is coming from someone who spent months on a waitlist. The food was a bit of a letdown. So sad. I'd been waiting months to get a reservation, and when we finally did, I was so excited. Walking in was magical, and sitting down felt really special and welcomed. Having options for water and delicious pickles was a great touch. But thank goodness it was just the two of us to enjoy two pickles. I saw tables with four to six people sharing two pickles. I think they need to rethink their sweet gesture and provide an order for every two people at a table. The cheesesteak was good, but not phenomenal. The pickles' acidic notes should be on the side so you can add them as you need. We needed more cheese to sandwich to add that sharp, pungent flavor you get with the soft, tender beef. The corner store nailed their steak sandwich French dip, where all the components came together to create their biggest hit. The 86 missed the mark for us. The biggest letdown for us was their dry aged Delmonico steak: 2 out of 10. The dry age was perfect, with all the right funk of blue cheese lingering on the steak, but it ended there. We expected huge flavor and a well-marbled cut of beef. Instead, we got the opposite, steak was chewy and tough. The steak came sliced, as pictured, so it's surprising the chef sent it out. I do have to add that it was cooked perfectly. But not a lot of flavor with a mouthful of juice with each bite. It wasn't tender or soft. Just a huge disappointment and let down. The Eighty Six lives up to the hype, mostly. Tucked into 86 Bedford in the former Chumley's space, the Art Deco room is stunning: warm, intimate, and dripping in old New York glamour. Service matched the setting, attentive and polished without ever feeling stuffy. Now, the food. The caviar croquettes? Stop what you're doing and order them immediately. Crispy, layered, topped with crème fraîche and caviar, they were the clear highlight of the night and honestly some of the best bites I've had in recent memory. The Philly sliders were equally outstanding: warm, gooey cheese, perfectly caramelized onions, sesame-seeded bun. Simple in concept, flawless in execution. And the compressed pineapple for dessert was a genuine showstopper, light, bright, and beautifully presented on ice with edible flowers. The Caesar was solid, well-dressed with generous parmesan and good croutons, but the warm olives hiding in there threw off the whole vibe. Small thing, but notable. The tuna tartare looked beautiful on that vintage china and was technically fine, but bland. For a room with this much personality, the flavor didn't quite keep up. Had a fantastic dinner at The Eighty Six recently. This is a hard reservation to get, so my party showed up about 30 minutes before opening and were able to get seated as a walk in. The staff were fabulous. Very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant has a very elevated and swanky feel. Kudos to the interior decorator on this team. The food was quite delicious, though I will admit we didn't have any unique cuts of meat. The stars of the meal were the croquettes appetizer and the banana pudding dessert. This is my second review of this spot because it's honestly just so so good! It's so cozy and feels like you're on the Orient Express , transported into the dreamiest location. Pure perfection. Even though it feels so exclusive, the staff make you feel like you are part of their family. So helpful, from the second you step inside. The Olive Oil Old Fashioned was still my favorite drink even though the Last Word was spectacular as well. Our friends agreed that the Dirty Martini was the best they've had. One of the best dinners I've had in years If you can get a reservation here, stop reading and just go. I'll warn you upfront: it took us a long time to find a date that worked. Worth every minute of the hunt. The space alone is worth the trip. Ten tables, built inside an old speakeasy, and without question the coolest room in New York City. The vibe is exclusive without being pretentious -- from the moment you walk in, every single person on staff greets you like they've been waiting for you specifically. The hostess looks like she walked off a Bond villain casting call, and she is absolutely magnificent. Drinks first: I had the olive oil old-fashioned and ordered a second one because I couldn't help myself. My wife had the bread and butter martini. Both are exactly what you want from a cocktail -- interesting without trying too hard. The meal opened with an amuse bouche: two artisanal pickles, one full-sour, one half-sour, each finished differently. They had no business being that good. Perfect tone-setter. For apps, get three things -- two of which you'll have to ask for: The potato croquettes are on the menu and mentioned in every review for a reason. Caviar on top, taste exactly like sour cream and onion chips. Get them. The rippers are off-menu. Ask. They're tiny cocktail-sized hot dogs on potato rolls, a nod to Rutt's Hut in New Jersey. My wife grew up on those, and these held up. The hamachi crudo is also off-menu -- apparently heading to the official menu soon. Chicken liver mousse, caviar. I'd order it every single time. For a mid-course, we had the lobster scampi pasta. We finished every bite and poured the remaining sauce directly into our mouths. I'm not embarrassed about it. Mains: the cheesesteak is deceptively spicy -- loaded with hot cherry peppers that sneak up on you. Great bread, great meat, genuinely delicious. We also ordered the $375 Wagyu strip for two. The waiter sold me on it, and honestly I let him. Citrus-fed cows from some special farm -- I can't tell you whether any steak is worth $375 on principle, but this was one of the best I've ever had, and I don't regret it for a second. Sides: mashed potatoes and the corn pot pie. Both rich, both excellent. Dessert: banana trifle situation that reminded me of Magnolia, and a lemon sorbet palate cleanser. Both were comped because it was our anniversary. It's a little absurd that a complimentary dessert feels significant after dropping $375 on a steak, but it does -- because it's just a thoughtful move, and this place is full of them. Five stars. He said his grandmother had "a little place on the South Fork" and that his parents got him a Tribeca loft after Williams, which in my naïveté I took as the greenest flag since St. Patrick invented the color. Let's call it what it was: generational fraud in an outlet Cucinelli vest. The Eighty Six invite should have been my warning. Hard res, glossy crowd. But old money doesn't dine where ambition queues. I heard "Creek Club" and assumed member, not guest of a guest whose grandfather actually earned the money. The nerve of the bourgeoisie. Rookie fumble. The food was perfect in that "I'm paying for the lighting but pretending it's the truffle oil" kind of way. The bluefin and Osetra combo was cold silk, the wagyu sliders were small enough to make my freshman year eating disorder, I mean conscious consumption, proud, and the spicy tuna crispy rice was engineered for people who still call it "crispy rice" and not "that crunchy tuna thing." Then Welford mentioned that after Grandma sold the house they "just stopped going out east," and I had what can only be described as a revelation. Not divine, just financial. I realized I was on a date with a liquidity event that never cleared. I ordered another martini to celebrate my restraint in not hurling my amuse-bouche across the table. The food was so good I briefly considered checking whether his Tribeca loft was at least on a cobblestoned street, maybe Walker or Franklin, something with resale potential. Then the rain outside parted like divine clearance to flee. The Eighty Six: five out of five for food and the kind of lighting that flatters even the undercapitalized. I know this place is a hard restaurant to get into but there is a surprising thing about this restaurant that makes us want to go back again and it's not just the incredible food! Day 1: waited on line and they came out took numbers so were not waiting hours. Even though we were prepared to it was super nice of them. And the guy who took our number was super cool. PS did not get in that day. Day 2: looked at DoorDash and hit food lottery and got reservation at bar. We were sooooo grateful. When showed up the guy who put us on waitlist remembered us from a day ago and fast forward the bartender Sean gave us the best service. He made our night. The Eighty Six, a relatively new restaurant (opened five months ago) by the same group behind The Corner Store blew away expectations! I snagged a 4:30 reservation on DoorDash where tables are reportedly dropped daily (not sure if at a specific time) and they also allow for walk-ins at the bar. The restaurant has an unassuming entrance in Bedford st and you're welcomed into a small entry room for check-in. The staff were all so welcoming, charismatic and engaging, introducing all of them and chit-chatting, getting to know us and was one of the most personalized dining experiences I've had with the team - shoutout to Don and Claude! The dining area has mild-moderately lit lighting and decor giving off Great Gatsby-McKittrick Hotel vibes with plush, comfortable booths and chairs. Claude was so helpful in providing recommendations and portions and all of his delivered. For drinks they have diverse options and cocktails ranging from classics to their own takes - I went an olive oil old fashioned that was spectacular. They have extensive wine options and by the glass. For food, we started off with complimentary pickles seasoned and one with wasabi, which was a refreshing, stimulating starter. We then got the potato croquettes topped off with caviar and filled with cheese - so delicious and the ingredients complimented and contrasted each other great. Next we got the Japanese madai, gentler on the palate but fresh and delicious sashimi well-prepared. For entree we got the porterhouse for two with green beans and corn pot pie as sides. The porterhouse was fantastic, cooked perfectly to medium rare as requested and just a ton of flavor with nice char and paired with their preferred sauce. The corn pot pie is a must-get and was an explosion of flavor with each bite - creamy, rich, and strong flavors. The green beans had nuts which offered a nice texture contrast and was a gentler dish to round out the steak. We got a glass of red each - Barda and Chianti - that went great with the porterhouse. For dessert we got the strawberry cheesecake that is truly one of the best cheesecakes I've ever had - such strong, sweet, rich flavor and a thicker-than-usual crust which I really appreciated and the strawberries were all fresh. Overall a fantastic meal and well-worth the visit, will definitely return and recommend for any kind of visit - casual dinner, date, birthday, anniversary! read more
