As a tourist from the Midwest, I want to first start with the decor. The absolute homage to the 1920s is beautifully reflected in the decor. The tile on the floor to the sconces hanging from the walls. The bar is a beautiful scene for a backdrop for photos, but more importantly than any of that is the service provided. We specifically want to mention included Daniel. Daniel was the most hospitable, the most gracious and absolutely the most accommodating staff we have encountered in our trip to New York so far. Daniel made excellent choices and actually helped to custom craft drinks to our particular taste. Midtown between 5th and 6th is mostly sad salad chains and tourist traps, so Valerie is doing more work than it should have to. Went today, pre-theater crowd already forming at 5. It's better than it needs to be, which in this neighborhood counts for a lot. The room is the star. Brass, smoked mirrors, marble, wallpaper with burlesque dancers, very Gatsby cosplay but done with actual money. Think the Campbell at Grand Central, minus the $28 martini attitude. It's also LOUD downstairs. Ask for upstairs if you want to hear your date. Gin is the program here and they take it seriously, house-infused bottles paired with specific tonics, not an afterthought. My G&T was legitimately well built. Food from chef JC Colón is better than cocktail-bar standard: truffle fries in duck fat are worth it, the lobster mac at $31 is rich and fine but you've had it before. Skip dessert. The steak frites at $48 is where I'd tap out, that's real-restaurant money for bar food execution. Here's the move though: weekday happy hour, 4 to 7. Dollar oysters and $13 cocktails in a room this pretty is one of the best deals in Midtown, full stop. Service was warm and fast even slammed. Not a destination, but if you're near Bryant Park or seeing a show, this beats everything else within five blocks. Book ahead, walk-ins were getting turned away by 5:30. read more

Amazing ambiance! We visited for a birthday dinner and were seated in a cozy, intimate corner, enhanced by the restaurant's beautifully dimmed lighting. Our server was fantastic--friendly, helpful, and highly efficient. The cocktail menu leans heavily into gin, but they are happy to mix up whatever you like. I ordered a margarita and it was excellent! For dinner, I went with the steak frites. It was absolutely delicious, and the portion was so generous that I actually had to push myself to finish it. Came here for brunch and had a decent time. The place wasn't too busy, likely due to the crappy weather, so we were able to sit there for a while after our meal concluded. Service was good. We had the fried chicken Benedict and the crab cake Benedict. I was a bit confused when I saw that each Benedict dish only had one poached egg - shouldn't it always be two? I guess that's shrinkflation (plus inflation) for you. That bent said, the crab cake was actually really big and filling. The side of potatoes were really delicious. Even the hostesses and runner were super friendly making you feel welcome. Seems like a great place to work, and it shows in the vibe of the place. Brings about a very 1920s vibe, with speakeasy cocktails. Great interior and vibe, with a location that clearly brings in a lot of folks for an after work happy hour meet. I had read a couple of reports that happy hour was dying but it's alive and well here. And for good reason. The cocktails are phenomenally well done. Mixology is on point, making a deceptive drink that doesn't have any hint of alcohol. The food was also great. Had the New York Strip Steak Frites, which was cooked perfectly to the temp I wanted (medium-rare), described as "10oz grass-fed brandt steak, hand-cut french fries, peppercorn compound butter, green garlic chimichurri", and the dish delivered. The chimichurri, and other condiments are in small dishes as sides so you can choose them or not. I gave it a try bu the steak didn't need help although the chimichurri was good. The fries were crispy but not overdone. Service was also good, especially for the crowds, the team served well and without being overbearing. Not a fan of this place. We came for lunch, and the ambiance is great, and it feels very cute, but the dish I ordered was not good. I got this pasta type gnocchi dish, and it was so underdone, the sauce it was sitting in was like water, and the peas even felt undercooked and unseasoned. The only thing that was decent was the pea puree inside the pasta pieces. It's also not a cheap place by any means, so I wouldn't come again. Came here for a slightly early dinner after a Broadway show with a party of 4 on a Sunday evening. We had a reservation, but it didn't seem like we would have needed one, but I suppose better safe than sorry. The ambiance feels straight of the golden age, which is an aesthetic I'm certainly a sucker for. Even their robust cocktail menu fits the bill and is one of the prettiest menus I've ever had the joy of perusing. Staff was able to sit us a little bit ahead of our reservation which was also much appreciated. Wait staff was also very helpful and attentive, I don't think I've ever had my water glass so topped off! Starting off with cocktails, this place is a gin bar through and through and you'd be making a mistake if you didn't try one of their many options. I went with the 10,000 words, which you simply just give a spirit of your choice (I picked gin of course) and whether you antes) wanted your drink shaken or stirred and the bartender does the rest, so a bit of a surprise! I wound up with their version of The Last Word which was delightfully citrusy but I was hoping I'd wind up with something a little more adventurous app things considered. My girlfriend got the blackberry G&T, which was not only very pleasing to look at but delicious to boot. For food, we started with splitting some zucchini blossoms and beef cheek bao buns (both come in portions of 3). Both were tasty, but I love a good bao bun and these were so light and pillowy, I could have just went for an order of those for my main course. For the entree I went for the roasted half chicken, perhaps the most unassuming choice on the menu but this was maybe the best roast chicken I've ever had. Prepared perfectly, cooked to perfection, excellent portion size, and the kicker of it all was the stunning gravy that I was tempted to lick my plate for. Chicken is very easy to screw up, and they nailed it on all fronts here. My girlfriend went for the Valerie Signature burger with white cheddar and this thing did not mess around! A very rich patty, cooked to her temperature of choice served alongside some garlic truffle fries that made an American classic feel just a little more elevated. Our experience was delightful and I'd love to comeback here again, especially to check out more of the cocktail menu and soak in more of that golden age aura the place gives. read more

The drinks were amazing, and the ambiance was beautiful. Unfortunately, the service really took away from the experience. When I said I didn't want to open a tab, the bartender rolled his eyes. When I asked for a straw, he handed me one with a rude, snappy attitude. To top it off, I was still drinking my cocktail when someone who hadn't even been near our table came over and took it away. I understand that new customers are coming in, but I should at least be allowed to finish my drink without feeling rushed to chug it. Not all of the staff were like this, but two specific guys were particularly pushy and unwelcoming--one with fake blonde hair and another who wasn't even around our table most of the time. It's unfortunate because the drinks and atmosphere were great. If the owner sees this, I hope they take it as an opportunity to remind their staff that being kind, patient, and welcoming goes a long way. Fabulous brunch in midtown. Beautiful and upscale but reasonably priced and not snooty. Excellent live jazz (I think 12-2) If you're into gin, you'll go nuts for the selection. To be able to see the band, you need to sit downstairs in the front section. You can also sit upstairs at the upstairs bar and position yourself to see the band. There are also a couple of cozy rooms in ther rear of the downstairs. Shrimp and grits highly recommended by my husband, I had the Greek omelette twice and it's delicious! We went to Valerie around 10 pm on a Sunday after a show as it was a short walk from our hotel. There appeared to be no seats at the bar. The hostess told us we could sit at the front window but that there would be no server and we'd have to go up to the bar to order. As my husband stood at the bar waiting to order, I spotted a table for 4 under the stairs. I mentioned it to the hostess who said they were saving that table for 4. Really? At 10:15? For mains the strip steak was excellent, really nice. The burgers are also good, though I would take the steak over them. VALERIE is an absolutely outstanding spot right in the heart of the city with great ambience. This bar has a real sense of history, and it's definitely a place you must visit.
