Dear Irving is what you imagine a New York speakeasy to be. It's a beautiful cocktail parlor in a few locations but we go to the Gramercy location. It's quaint, elegant, kitschy, and all things you want in a special cocktail experience. There are several rooms to choose from including the JFK room that looks like you're on the set of Mad Men. The Gatsby room is perfectly over the top in design and our favorite, the Marie Antoinette room with chandeliers, gilded stools and sofas. The cocktails are some of the best we had in the city. The menu is extensive with custom creations and classics, but their off-menu execution is exceptional. We've been to a lot of great places that encourage off menu, but it can be spotty if they get your request right. The bartenders are true pros and everything we ordered was delicious and represented exactly what we asked for. We think they're some kind of wizards. The service is as attentive as anywhere we've been. It's the right rhythm to always be there when you need them without being annoying. They have their model down cold which is why we go back almost every time we're back in NYC. The first cocktail we asked for was an old fashioned variation made with scotch and some holiday flavors like allspice, a rich Amaro, cinnamon, or whatever they were feeling. It ended up to be a nice balance of highland scotch, Montenegro (Amaro), banana liqueur, cinnamon syrup and Barspoon of Islay scotch. It was delicious (photo 2). The second was a whiskey flip. They mixed both rye whiskey and cognac for the base with Lucano Amaro, allspice, simple syrup and winter bitters. It was the perfect nightcap (photo 7). Finally crossed this speakeasy off of my bookmark list. Came here with a friend to check this spot out. We booked a reservation on Resy last minute for 10PM, but walked in about 30 minutes earlier to see if they could seat us earlier, which they had the space to do so. A lot of couples on dates, group of friends, and even families check the place out. Loved the decor that matches the prohibition era. I tried the Xantolo ($21), which is a mezcal drink with tequila, spiced pineapple, and lime. Tasted smoky, has that distinct mezcal taste, while also having that tropical pineapple taste to sweeten the drink. Perfectly made to my tastebuds. I also got the Phoenicia Old Fashioned ($21), which more bitter than I'm used to for a typical Old Fashioned. Overall, great service and fantastic drinks. Overall: I went here on a Friday night with my wife. We went in and asked for a table, but it was a 45 minute wait. When we finally got our names called we were seated immediately. Service: They had lights by each table similar to a call button on an airplane except that they didn't actually call anyone, just turned on an annoying red light. When we asked for our check, someone dropped off the check and ran away immediately, even though I was trying to hand my card to them. We didn't get much attention and it seemed like we were a bit forgotten. They seemed eager to close for the night. Value: Each drink was around $20. They're all pretty small so not great value, but they are well made and tasty. Atmosphere: The atmosphere here is really cool. There's interesting decorations everywhere and it's dimly lit with lots of barriers between the different seats so you feel like you're sort of isolated. My fiancé made reservations here to celebrate right after she proposed, and let me tell you, it was absolutely perfect. Honestly, the ambiance is the star of the show--imagine cozy, plush couches and this dreamy Victorian-inspired vibe (I think that's what you'd call it, though I might be wrong, haha). It's just so warm and inviting, making it feel like you're in a special little hideaway. We had the lobster guacamole, wagyu sliders, and potato croquettes. The sliders were the standout--bonus points for the cute logo branded on the buns. The cocktails were a mixed bag. My friend's margarita was too sweet, and my lemon drop was just meh. We had to send them back to be fixed, but hey, it happens. Our server was efficient and courteous. A nicely decorated lounge with cushioned velvet chairs are located in the back, separate from the main bar area. The call buttons for when ready to re/order, yep, drinks are a nice touch. The bourbon drinks hit just right and while the service was okay, the prices quite high, the time spent was great. Had a buzz when the hostess or somebody told me to buzz the little doorbell when I wanted service and sort of forgot that detail when it came time to make up our minds... but after looking around and it catching the corner of my eye, it all clicked and I pushed the button like I was trick or treating for brown liquor. Cocktails are good, service was decent, atmosphere is nice...it just feels kinda dated in the sense that it reminds me of the cocktail scene in like 2017 when everything was just riffs on classics. I had two drinks: the tinderbox (a little spicy mezcal drink) was fun. My second drink was the weaving weber (basically a tequila old fashioned) that I thought was really tasty but it was a $28 cocktail so at that price point it better be. Honestly a good half of the menu are riffs on classic dark liquor cocktails (manhattans & old fashioneds). They don't seem to have anything inventive featuring vodka or gin.
