Dining at The Modern was an extraordinary experience that we will remember for a long time. The dining room is bright, understated, and comfortable letting the food and service shine instead of the space. We indulged in the tasting menu with the wine pairing so we could savor every morsel and sip. The food is presented as art and tastes like heaven. The eggs on eggs on eggs was the standout dish for me, with the sea bass and duck coming in second. The service was high end, informative, and professional without being stuffy. One of the finest dining experiences in the city if that is what you are looking for.

What a great experience here! We got the longer tasting menu. Every dish of the night was a hit except this one vegetable only dish with asparagus and one other vegetable which I forgot. I got the reserve pairing, wines were on the younger side. Eggs on eggs on eggs was great, that was the dish we were most looking forward to. The extra bread was nice. Our servers were also super cool and nice to talk to / ask questions. Also appreciate them showing us the kitchen when we asked at the end! Ambiance is definitely nice. Bathrooms were less nice than other 2 star restaurants I've been too, not sure if it's because it's in a museum. Oh yea the melon lemonade zero proof drink is amazing.

Wow. When you think "museum restaurant" you don't usually think of places with two Michelin stars. The Modern is not a typical museum restaurant. It's a restaurant. That it happens to be in one of the best Modern Art museums in the world is a bonus (you don't need admission to the museum to eat there, however.) Food: We ate lunch here and had the prix fixe meal. The amuse buche was a tiny seafood and vegetable tartlet that was like a perfectly balanced mix of flavors and textures in your mouth. This was basically the theme of every dish we tried. The culinary team have mastered balance. Every dish had an excellent balance of salt, acid, fat, flavor, texture - nothing was overbearing or missing. Every dish felt thoughtful and well composed, with intentionality and executed to a very high standard. Service was, as expected, flawless. Staff was incredibly attentive and knowledgeable, and dishes arrived in the traditional organized ballet of multiple servers keeping the four of us up to date as they simultaneously delivered each of the three courses. I will definitely be back for the tasting menu.

I came here for dessert and it was good. First the place is beautiful and the employees are really nice. We came here for dessert and that dessert was so good, the cookie was delicious gooey, sweet and soft. I loved it and will be back. It was pricey but it was a great experience. I saw the portions and they looked a bit small, but I would be willing to try an item off their food menu and the drinks did look good.

Might be my favorite 2 star Michelin star restaurant I've eaten at. It is pricey so it might be more of a 4.5 rating but I'd round up. We opted for the Abstractions menu, some notes: - the scallops were my favorite dish, bright and well combined - the eggs dish was interesting, not my favorite, but an interesting execution and they proactively gave us extra brioche to eat with it - the pumpkin seed sourdough was just okay; they will give you more if needed - the dark chocolate cremeux was like clarified chocolate, I don't quite know how to describe it We first started with the French Martini, which was good and balanced. We also got a glass of red wine, which was good. However, we had requested the sommelier to choose a red wine glass for us and this seemed to be the most expensive one. Cost wasn't an issue but I guess it rubbed me the wrong way whether it should or not. Perhaps this was her genuine opinion. They gave a menu printout upon request.

The modern has been on my list, even more so after trying the bar room menu. It was a great experience overall and one to check off my list, but unlikely to return. I was seated by the windows, right by the garden which was amazing. I did the abstractions menu, as I think the point of coming here is to try the eggs on eggs on eggs. The presentation of that was great, but toward the end it was a bit too much / greasy. Otherwise the courses were definitely filling. I would say it was good, but not mindblowing. The service was great though, but from a 2 Michelin star restaurant, that's expected.

Came into this with very high expectations, being that it's one of the few elite-level 2-star restaurants in NYC. I arrived for my dinner reservation for 1 person about 7 minutes late, which is within their 15 minute grace period. I was shocked because I still had to wait another 8-10 minutes for my table to be ready, as the hostess told me the prior party was paying their check still at my reserved table. This is very unexpected for a 2-star establishment. The utensils served with a number of the courses seemed to not be what was needed to get the job done. For example, the scallop course had a dull knife that when I went to cut them into pieces, the whole dish fell apart and became messy. For the cooked fish dish, they gave me a normal spoon and fork. Not even a fish knife or regular knife. So I had to pry the fish apart with my two utensils, which again, made the dish a mess. Most of the dishes were good, but nothing really stood out as exceptional. $125 for a 4-bite truffle risotto add-on course is robbery to be honest. The truffle the server used was at the end of its life so it was harder and funkier than it should've been. The beef and lobster dish was very lackluster, as the beef was a lesser-than-expected quality and cut of beef that I would think to get in a tasting menu like this. Flavors were very bland and overall a lot of the courses were forgettable. Service was decent, average, nothing above average or crazy good. Overall, this was a disappointing experience for being a 2-star establishment.

I had the vegetarian option on three course lunch with the eggs on eggs on eggs as a supplement. It was a well-executed meal, and I enjoyed everything very much. The first bite was a tart containing poached beets to stand in for crab. The shell was light and crispy, contrasting against the soft beets and avocado. It was a light and refreshing bite. The bread course was great - crackly and blistered crust on the sourdough, with a fluffy and nutty interior. The cultured butter was funky and a great pairing. Next, the beet salad. I enjoyed the different types of beets and the slightly sweet passion fruit dressing. Little dots of mustard cut through with a nice sharp note. The main course was a ravioli filled with roasted sweet corn and ricotta, topped with radishes (raw and poached), tossed in a truffle butter sauce. The ravioli had a tasty roasted note cutting through the sweetness and creaminess, and the truffles added a hit of umami. Finally, the managed to get the vegetarian version of the eggs on eggs on eggs added to my meal last minute. The dish consists of a stick of fluffy brioche fried in butter and topped with pickled onions and dill, a poached egg, a nice aioli topped with dill oil, and beluga lentils standing in for caviar. The dish is incredibly rich and indulgent, and a very cool experience overall. The lentils are fried crispy to provide some nice contrast as well. Finally, I had the opera cake for dessert. The cake is a bit dense, but the chocolate and hazelnut mousse are rich and tasty. The cafe au lait ice cream is salted as well, which cuts through nicely. I also loved the views of the courtyard from the dining room and all the beautiful dishware. The service was fantastic, especially accommodating my last minute request to add the eggs on eggs on eggs, which also ended up being my favorite dish. The menu starts at $115, with a $75 addition for the eggs on eggs on eggs. This works out to around $250 after tax and tip. I definitely enjoyed my meal here and would recommend giving it a try.

MoMA is my favorite NYC institution, and I've been dying to check out The Modern ever since I learned of its existence, but would you believe that no one ever wants to spend $200+ to experience it with me? Pffft. Plebs. Well, I finally got my wish when relatives came to visit. We opted for the Impressions menu as it had more of what we wanted. - Smoked sturgeon and cucumber tart: Perfectly baked, and as savory and refreshing as one would expect for this kind of opener. - Avocado and summer squash with cara cara orange and basil: Beautifully plated and as refreshing as, well, a summer salad. The cara caras were a nice touch. - Sunflower sourdough with cultured butter + Turbot cooked on the bone with sweet corn and lovage: These came together, presumably so one had something to sop up the lovely turbot sauce with. The sourdough was crisp and chewy, and the fish was perfectly tender with lots of maize flavor. Lovely. - Roasted maine lobster with maitakes and meyer lemons vs. Venison glazed in cognac with sweet prince tomatoes and jamon iberico: Half of our party opted for the lobster, while the other half got venison, allowing us to try both. I was Team Lobster and definitely made the right choice, from the juicy, crunchy crustacean itself to the equally juicy, crunchy shrooms. Mmmm. The venison will undoubtedly appease manly red meat lovers, but I'm so over the "seared meat course" on every tasting menu. - Milk chocolate ganache with mint and shiso ice cream: A simple but satisfying dessert with surprisingly not too sweet ganache. The real star was the ice-cream though, because I've rarely found shiso ice-cream anywhere (even in Japan), and considering it's one of my favorite herbs....Let's just say I *MIGHT* have licked my plate. Might. We also received a complimentary white chocolate and lemon mini-cake for celebrating a special occasion. It was delectably spongey and large enough for the whole table to share. The final petit fours were a nice touch as well: an mandarin chocolate truffle and guava-jasmine gelatin. For drinky drinks, we got the fruity Jungle Bird and zesty Spiced Pina, but their cocktail and wine list will likely impress even the pickiest drinkers, given this is a two Michelin-starred restaurant. Service was as attentive as one would also expect for such a starred restaurant, but not so overly obsequious that I felt like I'd been recently knighted. I actually felt the decor was a bit lacking for a modern art museum restaurant--they could use a few unique statues and paintings a la Robert above the Museum of Arts and Design. And the sculpture park wasn't lit up when we were there, so that was boring to behold too. All in all, glad I (finally) tried this. For the most part, it lived up to the fantasies.

Perfect portion relative to lunch. Lobster was the star of the night albeit there being nothing mundane at all. Pasta accompanying said lobster was amazing & the contrast between said lobster & pasta was harmonious Definitely a lesson in hospitality that should be studied. Handcrafted & personlized copy of the menu plus Complimentary museum ticket.

Amazing food. From the crab amuse bouche, to the warm sourdough bread, to the salmon and kanpachi appetizers, every bite blew us away. The eggs on eggs on eggs was obviously the star of the show and did not disappoint. Every ingredient really comes together in that dish. I thought the mains were the only parts of the meal that were not perfect; the chicken was a little dry, and the sea bass sauce was good but not mind-blowing like the others. The desserts were also amazing--the chai ice cream went so well with the pears, and the chocolate opera cake was the perfect amount of decadence. We came for lunch prix fixe on Columbus holiday and enjoyed such fantastic service. We also had an amazing view of the sculpture garden in the daytime. I thought the lunch prix fixe was great value overall, even with the eggs on eggs on eggs supplement.

Absolutely incredible, one of a kind experience at The Modern. My husband planned this lunch as an early birthday gift; it was everything and more. The restaurant was stunning, the food was out of this world, and the service was next level. We even got to see the kitchen, which was such a treat!

We had dinner in the main dining room at a coveted power table. Service: Steve, our server, was warm, knowledgeable, and explained the menu like a pro. Jenna, the sommelier, is the GOAT. We bonded instantly over my upcoming sommelier certification, and her wine recommendations were flawless. Ruth, from Colombia, was sweet as a peach pie and made me feel at home (I'm from Venezuela!). And the lovely woman from South Africa such great energy and charm. Food: Perfect. Ravioli with black truffle = decadent heaven. Lamb = rich, flavorful, unforgettable. The Modern is a must in NYC. Excellent service, incredible food, and genuine hospitality.

Is lunch tasting menu same as dinner abstractions tasting menu?

Hi Connie, Please find our lunch and dinner menus on the website - enjoy!… Read more

Are they still doing no tipping?

    No. Tips are not included

Is gratuity included in the pre-fix/wine pairing?

    No, it's not included.

Are there personalized take home menus?

We did not get one. However, the food was so amazing, I didn't need a take home menu to remember it.

How much time should we plan for lunch?

It can vary but I'd say about 1.5 to 2 hours or so.

How much is their Tasting menu? Is it a better deal/experience than ordering A La Carte?

The Modern only has a tasting menu. The Bar Room is a La carte. The Modern is a bit pricey, yet such a lovely and utterly worthwhile experience. The Bar Room is, our FAVORITE restaurant in NYC.

Do they offer wine pairings with the pre fixe menu?

Yes. It's $195 for 6 half glasses of wine

How many courses to the dinner tasting menu?

    5 savory, 3 dessert

How much are main courses? The menu doesn't list prices

    Expensive.

What are the prices of the set menu? Can I just order the eggs on eggs on eggs?

Hey Benny - I don't believe you can order a la carte in the main dining hall, and if my memory serves me correctly, the dinner set menu is $188.

Can i wear a hat here?

Probably not the best idea given it's a white table cloth place.

Is this restaurant kid friendly? Can I bring my 10 month old with us? Thanks

The modern is a quite expensive, classy restaurant with an eclectic pre fixe menu. I would not bring any children under the age of 18 unless they have gourmet tastes, and can sit through, and enjoy a 2-3 hour meal.… Read more

Will it be difficult to walk in for the bar room on the weekend? If so, how long is the wait usually?

Do they offer a vegetarian menu?

The Bar Room is à la carte and you can likely find vegetarian items.

Can you access the museum directly from the restaurant?

No, you cannot. There is a separate museum entrance where there is bag check, temperature check, and security check. Very thorough and safe. I believe that this is the case due to COVID-19 precautions.

How formal is the modern? Should I wear a long dress, or short or is it more casual? Are guys wearing suits? Would I get denied if I am not wearing the appropriate attire?

It's not too casual or too dressy but a little in between. I have seen guys in suits and for girls, I'd say a short dress will work absolutely fine.

Can I take my own wine to the restaurant? If so would it be charged?

yes, bring your own but as i recall the corkage charge is $50. just call restaurant and ask --they are very accomodating

The front part where you first walk in is the bar area with some tables. This restaurant is on the darker side and brings you back in time. I thought for sure they would seat me at the bar area. I had a wonderful waitress whose name I think was Taylor but I could be wrong. I ordered the Monkey bread to start off with. It's a very buttery bread with truffle and parm cheese on top. I have alot of allergies and I was searching online if I could even have truffles as I have a nut allergy. But, she came back to me and told me that White truffle grows near or like over where Almonds grow from but that, they don't use white truffle so I was all good. We started with drinks, and mine ended up being a surprise standout. I ordered the coconut margarita, slightly hesitant since I'm not usually a margarita fan--but it completely won me over. It struck a perfect balance and leaned just enough into the coconut to make it feel unique without being overpowering. My sister-in-law, who's pregnant, had a non-alcoholic Ritual margarita and loved it, noting how convincingly it mimicked the real thing. Since we were sharing, we got to try a good mix of the menu. The monkey bread came first--definitely a splurge at $34, but it's one of those fun, indulgent starters that's worth ordering at least once. While I wouldn't call it the best bread I've ever had, I also wouldn't change anything about it. The crab rangoon was another highlight. Having it made with real crab made a noticeable difference, and the dipping sauces complemented it really well. It felt like a more elevated take on something familiar. For mains, the French dip was a hit. The meat was incredibly tender, the bread had that ideal crusty exterior, and the au jus was packed with flavor--I was very glad I ordered extra. It pulled the whole dish together. We also tried the smoked whitefish Caesar, which was the only dish that didn't quite land for me. It was a well-made, fresh salad, but the smoked fish flavor was a bit overpowering and took over the balance of the dish. Even though we were too full for dessert, the restaurant surprised us with a scoop of strawberry ice cream with chocolate sauce to celebrate my sister-in-law's babymoon. It ended up being one of the most memorable bites of the meal--we're still talking about how good that ice cream was. We arrived right at 11:45, and by the time we left, the place was absolutely buzzing. It's clearly a popular spot, and for good reason. Between the lively atmosphere, strong service, and well-executed food, I'd highly recommend making a reservation if you can.

This spot is alllll about the shareable items…read more We visited for Mother's Day brunch and the restaurant was packed! However, we were greeted warmly and a server was with us very quickly. They did however seat us at a table that was directly in the way of a lot of movement through the restaurant. Many waiters found themselves squeezing between our table and another to attend to other tables. Some were carrying very heavy looking trays. Beyond that, we had a blast. We ordered the butter service, which was super fun! The waiters make a whole show of it, seasoning the butter at the table, talking it up a bit, and then allowing us to go to town. The added shallots on top bring an extra hit of umami. The chorizo spread was a little grainy for me, but others at the table were going for seconds and thirds. I especially enjoyed the marinated leeks and the eggplant dip it was also served with. Our entrees were a little underwhelming. We ordered the lobster frites and the french onion soup burger. The burger wasn't overtly French oniony. It was just a solidly good burger. The lobster was delicious, but not anything I am continuing to think about. What I am still thinking about though, are the creme brulees! We ordered the corn creme brulee for a side. It was sweet and salty, with a great crack and chew to the top. I also loved the espresso creme brulee for dessert, which also had a nice light saltiness to it. We also got the spicy orange carrots which were totally delicious. In addition to the espresso creme brulee, we also ordered the lemon ice cream cake. It was bright and refreshing. The only downsides were the wait for the desserts. The wait was so long that our waiter insisted that they would be comped for our inconvenience. However, they were still on the bill at the end of the meal. He did remove them immediately when we pointed them out, though. And finally, coat check accidentally gave our Mother's Day bouquet of flowers to the wrong mom! We wound up with a much prettier bunch, but lost our balloon as part of the switch. Oh well! Next time, we'll definitely be ordering the brulees and I'll be damned if I leave without having their french onion soup!

I am writing to share some constructive feedback regarding a recent dinner at Quality Bistro…read more Having been a loyal patron of Quality Meats and Quality Italian for many years, I was eager to experience your take on the French bistro concept. While there were highlights to the evening, several aspects of the experience did not meet the high standards I have come to associate with the Quality Branded family. First, I must address a significant comfort issue two weeks ago. Our group was seated in one of the large booths, and we found that the cushions were so soft that we sank down uncomfortably low. It was quite awkward to dine when several guests could barely see over the top of the table. For a restaurant of this caliber, guest ergonomics are essential, and I would strongly encourage looking into firmer seating support for those booths. Regarding the menu, we found the oysters to be a bit of a letdown for the $5 price point. The citrus toppings were so heavy-handed that they completely overwhelmed the natural flavor of the oyster. Additionally, as a long-time fan of Quality Meats, I found the steak to be lacking in both presentation and precise execution. I had hoped for a dish that mirrored the excellence of your sister properties, but this fell short of expectations. On a more positive note, your staff was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout the night. We also thoroughly enjoyed the bread and butter cart; the butter was truly lovely and stands up well against international varieties I have tried. Furthermore, your desserts are stunning and were the highlight of our meal. I share this because I truly enjoy your restaurant group and would love to see Quality Bistro refine these details to match the world-class experience of your other locations and competitive locations in the neighborhood. I look forward to returning in the future to see how the space evolves.
