As the name implies, it really is an excellent dumpling house! Me and my buddies were in Jersey and New York for some hockey games, and wanted to go to a deli, get some Chinese food, and a slice of pizza. Got off the E train and when we looked for Chinese food, this place popped up with good reviews and it was just a short walk from where we got off the train. My buddies ordered the special lunches and we also got two types of xlb's, beef chow fun, and some fried dumplings. The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. Nice and juicy and great with some ginger, soy sauce, and spicy chili. Friendly service and food comes out pretty quickly. Credit card is accepted. Bathroom was also very clean, which is sometimes rare in some Chinese restaurants I have been to. If you're looking for a good Chinese meal, stop here when you're in the Chelsea area. read more

Generally, I love this restaurant - everything I've had it's been good. This is the first time I've ordered out from them and their delivery service leaves a lot to be desired - as does the grub hub app. The app didn't update that my order was delivered so I was keeping an eye out for delivery. I missed a call and literally two minutes later the call came through again and the woman yelled at me - "hurry up hurry up, hurry up, hurry up!" said the driver was waiting 10-15 minutes for me, which was simply untrue - I got a call literally two minutes before- just rude. Added a screenshot in case the owner doubles down that it was 15 mins. Guess the first call was from the delivery driver, and the second was from the restaurant itself. ‍ But the really disappointing part is that they didn't pack any soup separate from the noodles! - So my chicken dumpling noodle soup basically had no soup - don't know if they forgot it or if it was absorbed by the noodles but most restaurants at this point know to pack the broth and the noodles separately,- so I ended up having to add some of my own vegetable broth, which totally was not the flavor I was hoping for. So - love the food, but delivery service leaves a lot to be desired - next time I'll try giving instructions to pack the soup separate from the noodles and see if that helps! read more

We started out in Chelsea, aiming for Chinatown. The bus was twenty minutes off. "Is it worth waiting?" I asked T. "We can go someplace else." "How 'bout there?" he responded pointing to Excellent Dumpling House. It was directly across the street. I pulled up Yelp, saw good reviews and readily agreed. At 3:30, the restaurant was empty. There were a few takeout orders, but we were the only people sitting down for late lunch. And y'know ... it was pretty good. Wonton soup is what I'd expect in Chinatown. Wonton wrappers were thin -- my preference -- the stuffing delicious and the broth flavorful. They were generous with the beef in our chow fun. Good, but the noodles needed a jolt. So I asked for soy sauce which was sort of a solution. Shrimp with vegetables was great. A lot of shrimp, too. There are lunchtime specials on weekdays, reasonable prices, and nice people work there. I've been looking for a place open late-ish to get food in Chelsea now that the Malibu Diner is sadly gone. I hadn't been to EDH in a while and was happy to see they do have later hours (with a smaller late night menu). The place was pretty busy at 10:00 PM last Saturday, with a wide range of diners, which is good for business. The food though, at least that night, was really disappointing. My friend had the chicken dumplings. He said they were okay. I thought they were overcooked. My steamed shrimp shumai were fine, but steamed, they didn't have much flavour. The edamame, on the other hand, had way too much when it should have almost none. I don't know if it was excess salt, MSG or something else, but not good. I should have sent them back. I hope this was just an off night for the kitchen. read more

Short review/recommendations: XLB, Hot & Spicy Wontons (mild but excellent,) Honey BBQ Spare Ribs, and Shanghai Style Fried Noodles. Originally opened as a small restaurant in Chinatown on Lafayette, right off Canal, this spot serves Shanghainese and Cantonese food with a wide selection of dim sum. I was here with a very large group a good while back, and the friendly staff was very happy to accommodate all of us, with our group taking up two large tables and then some. They had the typical selection of beers and other soft drinks, but as per usual in less fancy Chinese spots, I stuck with tea. We first received a lot of dim sum. The Steamed Crabmeat & Pork Xiao Long Bao, which includes 6 pieces for $11.95, was above average. The skin was thin, the inside had a good, meaty filling, and the soup was well-flavored, mostly with pork and a bit of crab. It wasn't the best XLB I've had, but it got the job done. Also good was the Hot & Spicy Wonton, made with mixed pork and shrimp and served with hot oil and peanut sauce. These included 7 pieces, and the price at $10.75 was comparable to most Szechuan places. I wish the sauce had been more pungent, but it's a Shanghainese place, so that's a bit more typical. Again, the wrapper was thin, and the filling was generous. For the same price and portion size, you can also order Pork Dumplings, either steamed or fried. We got both, and I, as per usual, preferred the steamed variety. These were more standard but fine, with my definite preference being the other dumplings we had. There was also the Walnut Rock Shrimp. As we ordered 3, I presume it was around $12, but I don't remember the price, and it's not listed on the online menu or in any photos I can find on Yelp. I've never been a huge fan of this dish, as I generally only like the larger prawn variety found in many Cantonese places, where you can taste the shrimp better, but this was good. The batter was light and not overly sweet. We also got two of the siu mei/roasted meats. I don't see the Honey BBQ Spare Ribs listed, but I presume they were around $15 or $16. This was a very tasty version, with the ribs falling off the bone yet retaining some texture. Also, compared to most Chinese-American spots, the ribs weren't overly sweet. The BBQ Roast Pork for $15.45 was alright. I've had this dish from too many spots not to compare it to the better places around Chinatown and other neighborhoods, and this was just OK. I liked the mix of fatty and lean pieces, but the leaner ones weren't super flavorful and were also a bit dry. I wouldn't recommend this as much./ The remaining plates were larger. The Shanghai-Style Fried Noodle, available with a choice of protein, was good for $14.75. The noodles were the best part, with a good wok hei and a nice, slightly chewy texture. I probably would have preferred them with beef or pork, as there wasn't too much shrimp, but otherwise, no real complaints. The Young Chow Fried Rice for $15.25 was, in many ways, the opposite of the noodles. By comparison, the dish had plenty of protein, but the rice itself felt a bit lacking in flavor and wok hei. It was decent For a veggie, there were the Sauteed Snow Pea Leaves With Garlic for $22.75. The leaves were cooked nicely, and there was plenty of garlic flavor. In other words, nothing to complain about and nothing particularly notable, so it was a good standard variant. It was also the expected price for these usually expensive greens. Last was the Sizzling Ginger Beef in Basil Sauce, consisting of beef with ginger, scallion, and onion in basil sauce for $24.75. The beef was tender, but the sauce was a bit milder than expected. It was still tasty, and the portion, as expected for the price, was generous. This is a tasty Chinese place with a couple of excellent dishes. Bumping it up a good amount, given the neighborhood and the general quality as if this was closer to Chinatown, it would be closer to a lower 4/upper 3. read more

I from NJ originally and live in Chicago now. I love Chinese food and for some reason Chicago can just not do it the same way. So whenever I'm in the tri-state area I'm finding Chinese food. This food was so good it legitimately made me sad...because I want to live in NYC just so this can be my go to spot. We had lo-mein, pork fried dumplings and pork bun. I hadn't been to Excellent Dumpling House in years (it used to be a place I frequented a lot in college, since I went to school nearby), but I decided to go back this past weekend. We went in around 5pm, and there were several open tables. My group of 3 and I were sat right away. The staff is friendly and attentive, and to make it even better, they have spa music playing overhead, making the ambience perfect for a relaxing meal. Since I was feeling a bit under the weather, I got the corn and egg drop soup to start, and the mushroom and vegetable dumplings for my main. The egg drop soup is a delicious classic, and the corn was a nice touch. The mushroom and vegetable dumplings were also amazing, and were flavorful enough without the dipping sauce they give you. It's rare to find vegetarian dim sum options, even though I do love my shrimp dumplings. They were heavenly! When you take a nibble of the crab and pork dumpling the broth jumps out in the most excellent way - rich and delicious, with the thinnest wrapper to hold it. Stumbled into Excellent Dumpling House and was greeted and sat immediately. It's a bigger place, with some bigger tables to accommodate bigger parties. We ordered a Sapporo each and hot sake to look over the menu. Menu was pretty big and had lots of options. We ordered the Hot and Spicy Wonton, Crabmeat and Pork Xiao Long Bao, and two specials including the Dan Dan noodles with duck and the honey walnut shrimp. The wontons and the XLB were both amazing. I wanted to order more, but we ordered a lot of food. The shrimp were really good and had big candied walnuts, couldn't stop eating them. Also the waiter we had was super attentive and nice to us and even spoke to us about his favorite dishes. (He usually has the orange chicken with the sauce on the side so it stays crunchy- I'm trying that next time!) we ordered the orange chicken and it was tasty and crunchy and I love the pineapples with the dish too. While mostly empty when we arrived, we were quickly seated and served. The mostly bare walls and lack of overall aesthetic gave a bit of a passive ambiance vibe, but what they lack in decorations, they made up for it in food quality. Excellent Dumpling House's must have are their dumplings, and their soup dumplings are the star of the shoe. They're filled with steamy broth and in a delicate wrapper making them difficult to grab without rupturing them, but well worth it when you get the perfect bite. Their peking duck spring roll was tasty, but a bit small for my preference. But the sizzling eggplant served on a hot plate was exactly what I hoped for: juicy tender explants in a garlic sauce that just melts in your mouth. absolutely horrific customer service would not recommend delivery unless you'd like your evening to be ruined. At the dark hour of 8:40 PM an aggravated man yelled at me repeatedly for 10 minutes continuously making agressive hand motions and even physically assaulting me by gripping and throwing my hand off of my PREPAID food. As a young girl I was petrified, I was being stared at by on lookers on the street and I felt incredibly unsafe. He then tried to bike away with my already paid for and expensive food. Not only was this man refusing to give me my food, the owner of the restaurant was attempting to coerce me into giving the delivery driver a tip over the phone saying "the adults are telling you, you have to tip because you put in the wrong address" which is not correct, my student handbook states the correct address and I made sure to copy and paste it from that document in order to not cause any inconveniences to greatly appreciated delivery service workers. Not only was this interaction extremely aggressive but extremely inappropriate to do to a minor. Thank god the food was better than most delivery dumpling places despite the tomfoolery afoot. Although the ratio of pork to soup to wrapping was honestly nauseating. 1 the soup was too sweet. 2 the amount of pork was overpowering AND there were some chewy parts. very americanized. Not authentic. 3 the wrapping ripped and soaked my bag. Why would you over steam the dumplings? Mind you I am a dumpling connoisseur, my first dumpling was with my beloved lola (Filipino grandmother), she introduced me to the wonder of beautiful Xaio Long Bao just for it to be TAINTED by poor costumer service and even worse... bad porportions and ratios. Thank god my friend came out of my PRECOLLEGE school's building, I thought I was going to end up under a bridge and as a Jane Doe. Would not recommend if you are looking for an easy, seamless, and hospitable experience. We discovered this dim sum house by a happy accident and we are so glad we did! The food was incredible, the service was warm and friendly and the restaurant itself was cozy and welcoming. We had the crabmeat and pork Xiao long bao (soup dumplings), the egg drop soup and the hot and spicy wontons to start. They were all delicious, get them all if you can. The broth of the egg drop soup was insane, some of the best I've ever had in the city. The egg ribbons were perfect and it was just the best way to start this whole meal. The hot and spicy wontons are in a spicy peanut butter sauce so just be weary of that if you have any allergies. The Xiao long bao were perfect. The meat and the broth were delectable, like lip-smackingly good. Definitely up there with the likes of Joe's soup dumplings and other Chinatown favs. For our main, we had the special fried rice which paired really well with the chilli oil and the cashew chicken which had lots of veggies like zucchini, celery and carrots, and was just so yummy and paired really well with the rice. Service was good and not pushy - loved that they were attentive enough to always have our waters refilled, but didn't necessarily come over every 5 minutes to ask us how we were. Our order came out within 10 minutes and was super fresh. The skin is thin and did not dry out while we were eating or pop. The amount of filling was generous. I only wish there was more soup. The soup itself is super interesting. Usually it is savory, but this one had a sweetness to it so it will not be everyone's cup of tea.
