Food was very hit or miss. Soup dumplings were not bad. Fish dry pot was yummy and the best item by far. The dan dan noodles were more like bolognese... The dim sum items were all ok. While initially wifey was disappointed in the size of the shrimp dumplings and sticky rice, it worked that it was plenty of food. Everything was tasty. I was really excited to come here with a friend especially with their extensive menu. We ordered a few things - the chicken and broccoli, chicken soup dumplings, and we each got a hot and sour soup. The soup was inedible. I had such a hard time handling the acidity and the pepperiness of it all and I love hot and sour soup! It wasn't busy at all when I visited Baodega as a group of three on 7:45pm on Monday, so it was easy to get a table without a reservation. I ordered the spicy wontons in chili oil and the preserved cabbage and pork rice cakes. I was quite bewildered and disappointed by the spicy wontons, as they barely had any sauce, and the filling was dense and hard instead of being juicy and bouncy like a wonton should be. The little sauce it did have was quite flavorless and not spicy at all. The rice cakes were a bit better, but the pork was also quite hard. I felt like the dishes were not as hot as they should have been. Furthermore, we were still eating when they dragged a huge garbage bin by us, so the smell made the dining experience even more unpleasant. Would not recommend. read more

Came here at 6pmish on a Tuesday and there was plenty of room for us. The menu included photos of every dish, which I appreciated. Service was quick, nice, and we received our food within about 10 minutes of ordering. The DanDan noodles were delish - the sauce was spicy, had plenty of pork, and the perfect balance of noodles. The wonton soup was good - it had 6 big wontons that tasted fresh. However, our favorite was the Grandma's Recipe Soup Dumplings - sooooo good Chewy outside, yummy broth, and rich, savory filling. Just came for dinner with a friend after hearing the hype. We got seated quickly. We ordered a bunch of dim sum and the Peking duck bao buns. Our favorite were the duck buns and the pork soup dumplings. The spicy cucumber were interesting. Lots of garlic and the pictures didn't show garlic. The spicy wontons in chili oil came with crushed peanuts and the pictures on menu didn't show it either. Good thing we didn't have peanut allergies. We also got the pork and shrimp shumai as well as the shrimp dumplings. These were ok. They also weren't steaming, but luke warm. Not sure if this was an off night but the food was just ok at best. While service tends to not be the forte of Chinese restaurants *cough cough*, I did expect decent service from Baodega given its location, marketing, and price range, but was left deeply disappointed. First of all, I love that they have their own reservation system on their website. I was able to easily make a reservation for 3 at 12:30pm the day before. However upon arriving, the host did not greet us or try to make eye contact with us. He was running around trying to play the role of host, waiter, and busser all at once. While I do feel for him, I think this is ridiculous on the business's fault. It's apparent that after their Tiktok boom they NEED to hire another person to keep up with the demand and there is absolutely no excuse they can't find someone to hire in this economy. The host never asked if we had reservations and I could not get the chance to tell him because he would always be away from the front counter. When a table was finally ready for us, he merely pointed at it from far away to tell us to sit down. While I understand how much he has on his plate due to the circumstances, I did not appreciate his behavior and way of handling it. It takes only a second to greet someone and 10 to show them to their table. We ordered the Traditional Shanghai Pan Fried Soup Dumplings and Grandma's Pork Soup Dumplings. Both had very thick skin and not a lot of soup in it. The flavors of the fillings were good. I felt the skin of Grandma's Pork Soup Dumplings to have a weird odor to it, but couldn't exactly pinpoint what it was. Needless to say, I wouldn't come again. My Guh Guh (big bro in Mandarin) found this place on Tiktok, as they had a heart warming story and it is family owned and operated. Guh Guh is also the pickiest person when it comes to Chinese food as he is from Taiwan, so him saying it looks authentic was the only stamp of approval I needed to make the excursion to Flatiron. Guh Guh and I arrived at 2:30pm on a Saturday to a PACKED house. The Tiktok effect is so real. You could see the owner and his wife BUSTIN their ass in here, my boy was actually drenched in sweat. They were a little understaffed but it's all good that Tiktok had like 2.6 million likes in 2 days so... We ordered FEAST, as he is Guh Guh and I hadn't eaten all day so I was BIG Hungry... plus I wanted to impress Guh Guh and show him I could eat a lot! We could see the owner's wife handrolling the Bao (soup dumpling) through a glass window that peeks into the kitchen, so we centered our order around that. We ordered: Crab Roe and Pork Bao, Grandma's Pork Bao, Vege and Pork Spicy Dumplings, Peking Duck Burgers, Roast Pork Buns, Beef and Cucumbers, Dan Dan Noodle, and the Beef Dry Pot. Like I said, a FEAST. Big dogs gotta eat though........The waiter even chirped Guh Guh in Mandarin saying "You guys won't finish all that....." He learned the hard way not to mess with my Guh Guh! We DEMOLISHED everything. I mean it was 70/30 Guh Guh but still, I did okay. The food was PHENOMENAL. The Bao was actually the best I've had, and Guh Guh was obsessed and that man is hard to impress. The Dry Pot changed my life, as the vegetables and beef had the perfect amount of char that made them just a little crispy on every bite. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it now damn I loved that dry pot. My only complaint about this place was the name. "Baodega" just sounds like a cheap Chinese place that I would doordash on the way home after striking out at the local bar, and this place couldn't be further from that. I didn't realize I tried this place before years ago! It's a cute place and prices are still higher than usual. Tried more dim sum specialties and would say they do okay with it. Some other places do it better. The shrimp dumpling was smaller than I'm used to and the filling lacked flavor. The crab roe soup dumplings were just okay. Jellyfish was okay and had crunch. Roast pork bun can be skipped. Theirs is steamed, filling is less than other spots and mostly bread versus roast pork but at least they use some lean meat. The sticky rice with chicken wasn't bad. My favorite was the hot pot chicken noodle soup. The flavors in this dish were really good and I liked the noodle in this dish. Super flavorful, tons of chicken and vegetables. Great combination. BEWARE OF TIKTOK HYPE! I came to visit this spot because I wanted to support this restaurant struggling to make ends meet. The place was clean and the service was okay but the food was disappointing. There's a reason why the restaurant is not doing good and it's not because of its awkward location. The soup dumpling skin was too thick and had barely any soup, the scallion pancakes was extremely thick and was very far from what one would consider to be a scallion pancake. Trust me when I say there's way better and CHEAPER spots in Chinatown. It was not at all means bad but it wasn't good either. I'm glad I tried it and supported this restaurant but I won't be coming back again. I love to support a struggling business if it deserves recognition. I visited here on Christmas and I want to shoutout the staff for entertaining all my niece and nephew's kiddy questions. Although they didn't plan on paying for any portion of the meal and had no clue what most of the dishes were, they scrutinized every page of the menu lol. I appreciate them for it because it helped me assess my experience through a less biased lens. Overall, I enjoyed my visit here and I would recommend it to anyone in the area looking for a good lunch. For drinks, they don't have cocktails so I had a glass of rosé. I would pass on that but i liked that the bottles were reasonably priced. For food, my family and I tried the string beans with beef, string beans with chicken, chicken fried rice, braised beef stew noodle soup, sweet corn soup + chicken, bao, and deep fried sesame rice balls. Out of all of those dishes, the sesame rice balls and the string beans with beef were my favorite. The string beans with beef dish was flavorful and not too salty and the bean paste in the sesame rice balls pleasantly surprised us all. The pricing felt a bit high for some of the dinner entrees but their lunch time and take out pricing seems very different. I would definitely revisit here if i was doing either of those options. This is always one of our favorite places to eat in the city. Food is delicious and the service is great. The ambiance is always close to serene. It's never overly crowded or ever too loud. Rating this spot based on the food my group got & experience we had, and honestly it was a good time with great food. I would come again! A bit surprised by some recent reviews. I made a reservation online but the main guy was so busy seating tables when we walked in that we didn't even need to mention the reservation and got a table. There is a steady flow of people all night but things move easily and most people I saw come in didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes. They were BUSY at 630 on a Friday, but every time we needed something the main guy or one of the other people in the restaurant came to help out. The food was solid -- great soup dumplings (could definitely use a little more soup BUT still solid and would get again 100%), pork bun, and wontons (my favorite of the night!). We got a couple other dishes, steamed veg dumplings, scallion pancake, but I could do without those and try some new stuff next time. The place is lively and chill. The restaurant is nice inside and clean. The staff were very friendly and set us right away. We ordered the regular grandma's pork soup dumplings and also the pan fried soup dumplings. Both were really great with a lot of flavor, but the original soup dumplings were better because there was less breading. I also ordered the pork shredded and garlic sauce, and it was so delicious. Definitely worth trying. They do not hold out on the garlic. they have a good lunch special here that includes an entrée, a spring roll and a soup for $15. Overall for the lunch special, an entrée and two kinds of dumplings our receipts ended up being around $50 so pretty good price for two people. read more

Not going to lie, I had high hopes for the lunch special after looking at reviews and photos, but Baodega played me big time. I ordered the Char Siu Noodle Soup and was SUPER disappointed to find that the pork was a dark gray, almost black color and EXTREMELY tough and chewy. It was definitely not fresh (likely reheated a few times) and completely inedible. I had to toss it which was really frustrating, but the broth itself was delicious so I sipped on that. Still, it was definitely a dissatisfying experience and a waste of $$$. I wonder if it would be different if I had dined in the restaurant itself? I can't imagine they'd be okay serving that that to a customer face-to-face. Staff seems very friendly Lowlights: wait and food. The wait seemed extremely long for 2 people mainly because of people lingering at tables and slightly slower service. Understanding that it's a smaller family run place probably nothing to be done here, but wanted to call it out in case anyone was debating trying to squeeze in a quick meal. We waited about 45 minutes with 4 parties in front of us. Food: We ordered the fried soup dumplings, chicken soup dumplings, scallion pancake, Dan Dan noodles, and crispy wontons. Fried soup dumplings: while tasty, came with about 1/4 of the soup that XLB generally come with, basically taking it out of soup dumpling category. The vinegar also comes mixed with something, I would love to see an option for normal black vinegar Chicken soup dumplings: same as above, the soup ratio was quite low. The dough on the dumpling was also quite thick changing the consistency and experience of a XLB. Scallion pancake: much heavier and thicker dough than typical scallion pancakes I've had at dim sum. Also was not served with sauce and came out pretty dry with a blander flavor profile. Dan Dan noodles: this seemed more like a spaghetti with meat sauce than an Asian noodle dish. It is upscale fancy Chinese restaurant with lots of dim sum offering and some typical Chinese food at uptown prices. Lunch specials (egg drop soup + 1pc vegetable spring roll with bowl of rice) $15 with 2 rice plates at $17/18. We ordered: 2 lunch specials- Kung pao chicken + hot pot chicken and 1 roast duck noodle soup. We ordered pork soup dumplings + crunchy wontons for appetizers. The appetizers came last. The 2 chicken dishes were very similar but kung pao is more saucy (chili oil). Both chicken dishes had similar seasoning/spice that gave us a werid after-taste and the chili oil seem to give us a werid numbing/tingling feeling in our lips. Both spring rolls were COLD (not even room temperature). Rice seems old/dried out. The noodles in the soup was different from picture on menu and looked like spaghetti noodles not Chinese noodles. The crunchy wonton are very crunchy but still pink/reddish (see photo). Soup dumpling barely had soup inside- was dried out. Next time we'll stick to chinatown for the soup dumplings. Great spot for a variety of authentic Shanghainese dishes in a clean, open space. I came for dinner and tried 4 different dishes: 1. Roast pork bun ($7.50)- This was a large bun with a savory filling of pork and onions, and the bun itself was nice and fluffy. 2. Braised meat ball noodle soup ($19)- Noodles were cooked well and the soup was flavorful; meat balls were large and tasty. 4. Egg tarts (2 for $8.50)- Had to order this classic delicious treat; this one was a bit more egg-forward rather than custard-tasting compared to others, but still very good. As a whole, I'd say the prices were a bit high, but still somewhat reasonable. The restaurant interior is quite large and very clean. It also has some elegant decor with a casual atmosphere. I came on a Friday night, and there were only a few other people dining in. The owner was the one who seated us and took our order, and he seemed friendly. Overall, I would recommend Baodega if you are looking for high quality Chinese food (especially if you're looking for Shanghainese food) in a nice setting. I always think of this place as a hidden jewel because it never seems overly busy and the food is always spot on delicious with reasonable prices, the latter being a rarity in the Chelsea/Flatiron area. The food is Shanghainese, which for most people usually translate to the Chinese food they are used to ... or at least it's close to it. But truth be told traditional Shanghai cuisine is hard to get right, and this place does. It's very mom and pop, which is part of its charm. The older gentleman who seats patrons and takes orders is the owner. His wife, who speaks little to no English, is the head chef. We've been coming here for awhile and the food is always consistently good. And I don't say that often. NYC is infamous for its inconsistencies. The dry pot is a treat. It seems that last year I came on an off day, because when I arrived this time the place had quite a couple tables full.
