Shiumai exceptional! Other food, not so much. Will not return for lunch special, perhaps only dumplings, presumably. Even the WHITE RICE is crunchy/overcooked/completely a disaster! Truly remarkable. Soup terrible, didn't even resume after first few cornstarchy bites. I'd say the food earns them 4 stars on its own, and you can find more of a variety at the dim sum halls of Flushing, Chinatown, and Bensonhurst, but the food here is still quite food for midtown and worth a visit for. Dish highlights include the shrimp and chive dumplings, beef chow fun, and my personal favorite, the stuffed eggplant. Other items were a little bland, like the turnip cakes and har gow, and the pan fried shrimp noodles were awkwardly plated and made them difficult to eat. I also wish they had rice noodle rolls, which I didnt see on the menu. Really what pushed it to 5 stars to me was the service. We came as a huge group of 20, with a baby and stroller in tow, and they handled everything without so much as a grimace, just an outpouring of helpfulness. They sat half our group at a round table and the other half at a rectangular long table and also helped us navigate dietary restrictions, asking specifically who in the group had those restrictions. The menu is labeled too, so you know which items are vegetarian or gluten free. At one point our helpful server noticed we hadn't really touched that awkwardly plated noodle dish and offered to replace it with another. We didn't take him up on that as I'd find that wasteful but I thought that was so attentive and earned them a generous tip. The space is nice looking, and the food came out very quickly. We also didn't break the bank, even with plenty of drink orders. Dao's is an easy recommendation, especially when you factor in how seamlessly they handled our chaos. read more

I liked the food here. Came here for the dim sum and brunch. Nice selection of dumplings and decently priced. Personally, the other items (we got a noodle side dish and a veggie side) were kinda pricey for about $20 a piece. Was good though and we devoured the everything on our plates. I made a RSVP before, but when I went they seemed confused, but didn't have to wait a long time to be seated. Its kinda small, but busy. There's booths and tables in the middle. Don't be fooled by the high ratings on Google; they have an offer where if you leave a good review you get a free dessert. The food here was okay. The pan fried chive and shrimp dumpling was crispy. I could see chives, but somehow couldn't really taste the chives as much in the dumpling. The pan fried turnip cake was too mushy. It was crispy on the outside but the inside stuck to my mouth and didn't have the nice chew that a good turnip cake should. Shrimp dumplings were overpriced at $8 for 3 dumplings. Instead of chopped shrimp, it tasted more like a shrimp ball inside. The ginger tripe was probably my favorite. The flavor was good but the sauce was a little too thickened by cornstarch. We also ordered the scallion ginger lobster, which in the picture on the menu showed noodles underneath. When it arrived it only came with rice and when we asked the waitress about it, she said the picture was actually lobster lo mein and that the picture was wrong! Rounded up to four stars because I think a lot of my comments are very specific personal preference when it comes to Chinese food and dim sum in general because everything was ultimately cooked perfectly. Ordered: mixed vegetable dumplings + krabmeat/spinach/shrimp dumplings + crispy sesame ball + veg. spring rolls + pan-fried veg. dumplings + pan-fried shrimp & chive dumplings + scallion pancake + steamed egg custard buns + sticky rice in lotus leaf (didn't notice that this was meat filled! couldn't eat) + crispy shrimp balls + vegetable lo mein + shrimp fried rice. Many dishes, a mix of vegetarian and seafood, had an off-putting flavor or were just way too big to eat and enjoy comfortably with the texture, imo. Threw most things away, sadly. The shrimp fried rice, vegetable lo mein, and shrimp w/ chive dumplings were INCREDIBLE, though, and my partner was obsessed with his egg custard buns. This place was recommended by the concierge at our hotel for lunch since my mom wanted "NYC Chinese". We took the quick 10 minute stroll to this restaurant during lunch time which was nice. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. They have the lunch rush down pat as we did not wait long for our food at all. Both my mom and I were pleased with our selections. Finally got a chance to try this place after noticing signage repeatedly on my way home whenever in this area. Noticed they have a sign out advertising all-day take out specials. Decided to get takeout for dinner. Ordered the eggplant with chicken special and the assorted vegetables with fish filet special. Food was ready within 15 minutes of ordering. Neatly packaged containers and sturdy double paper bag. Good excellent portion size. Good value. Food was delicious. Wonderful new dim sum restaurant on Madison Ave btw 33rd and 34th st. Came here for lunch and they had a nice sit-down atmosphere with comfy booth seating. I ordered their dim sum platter ($22.99) which came with one of each: -Red bean sesame ball - love the mochi texture but wished the inside red beans was more purée -Duck dumplings & Pork roll - good but not memorable -Black truffle and spinach dumplings - perfect texture! -Crispy shrimp ball - nice crisp on the outside but maybe too much shrimp -Shumai and har gow (steam shrimp dumpling) were sooo amazing that we ordered extra. Both were juicy and fresh! We also ordered a side of crispy tofu skin shrimp but I wouldn't recommend them since there were very little shrimp and mostly crunchy tofu skins. The platter was a nice experience for our first time visit but Ill be ordering a la carte the next time I go. Staff were nice but with only 2 working there, it took some time to flag them down. We were a group of 19 celebrating a birthday. The day before our dinner plans had to change. I looked up restaurants in the area we would be near. I came across Doa Dim Sum and we were very lucky. I spoke to Peter who handled everything for us. He and the rest of the staff were very nice and helpful. The food was delicious we ordered so much food. The dim sum platters are definitely worth it. We ordered 2 of them, pan fried dumplings and veggie rolls. I had the Roast Pork Pan fried noodles. My husband had the Duck Rolls. Some of us had lo-mein dishes and fried rice. I cant remember everything else we ordered but Everything was delicious. They also have vegetarian and gluten free options which was another thing we needed. The restaurant it self looks small when you walk but it's not. The atmosphere was cozy and warm. It was clean in the restuarant, from what I could see of the kitchen and the bathroom. We came here after a long day of Anime Con and it was completely empty inside. We ordered the classic dimsum, shumai, xiao long bao, chicken feet and spring rolls and steamed pork ribs! All of them were okay and the best were the shumai in my opinion and the steamed ribs! For the entrees we got mapo tofu and the fried seafood noodles and I thought the seafood noodles were good and the greens were done well! Overall no complaints and we got a booth and while it's not the best i think its just good enough for me after a long day of walking we just want cold water and to chat about our day. The place is nice, new, and clean and the service friendly. The prices are good, particularly given the large portion size. The food varied and part of that was on us because in hindsight we should have ordered differently. The hot and sour soup was great and almost unnecessarily large for $6. The dim sum was a little disappointing partly because it was so big -- I prefer small pieces. The har gow was decent, the pork and shrimp siu mai pretty good, while the potstickers were more fried (on many edges) than pan fried on one side as we like. For the main we split a chicken with asparagus, onion, and scallion and while the ingredients were tasty the sauce had an unexpected sweetness which I think may come from their in-house soy sauce which refrigerated (served cold), lighter, less salty, and sweeter than the usual store bought product. Note that I'm from SF and may have a west coast palette for Chinese. Recommendations: shrink the dim sum, pan fry the potstickers, and serve both regular and your special soy sauce. read more

Was a last minute friend suggestion to come here after work. I generally know most of the top dim sum spots in the city and was initially surprised that Dao was not on my radar. Upon ordering a bunch of dishes including classic XLB, truffle dumplings, gyoza everything was good but not great. We proceeded to get half roast duck and an order of crispy shredded beef. This place is in the same group as Dim Sum Garden, with a few branches in the city and in Flushing. The dim sum offerings here are limited, with no cheung fun (rice crepe with fillings) at all, but this is not surprising because they also do not offer that in Dim Sum Garden restaurants. This place is more spacious than Dim Sum Garden branches in the city, and most if not all the dim sum dishes are about $1 more than Dim Sum Garden. From what I could see, most non-Asian patrons just order the lunch specials, which are typical American Chinese dishes. Those are good deals for the area (around $14). The dim sum quality was so-so, some were typical but some tasted off, such as the beef tripe with black pepper sauce. The sauce was weird, and not what you typically get at dim sum restaurants. I also think it didn't taste fresh, despite the heavy seasoning. The skin of the pea shoot dumplings was impossibly thick and quite a joke really. I think the place caters to non-Chinese patrons and in that sense it's adequate. If you want quality dim sum, look elsewhere. read more

Our eyes gravitated straight towards the dim sum platter where we got to try a little bit of everything. It was such a fun way to enjoy our meal. We opted for the Peking duck half portion which came with 6 buns and the house special lo mein which had a variety of meats included such as chicken pork and shrimp. After finishing work, one of our friends from Asia recommended Dao Dim Sum, and we gladly agreed to give it a try. From the moment we stepped in, we were welcomed by a spacious and inviting atmosphere. We sat at a comfortable round table by the window that was perfect for our group of five. Rather than choosing from the menu ourselves, we left it up to our friend to surprise us with his selections and it was the best decision! I think the dim sum dishes were pretty good, but the main dish was little lacking. All the dim sum dishes came out quickly and were a good level of crispness. The pan fried shrimp and chives dumplings and har gow were both had some tasty fillings. The Har gow were a bit larger than usual as well. The scallion pancakes were thin but a little hard. The beef chow fun took longer to come out and the noodles were clumping together and too salty. The ambiance in Dao is more elevated and modern than the usual dim sum spot, but it does cost a little more. I think the prices are still very reasonable for ktown. Overall, if you're looking for dim sum in the area, I'd recommend Dao. read more
