I had not been back to Tipsy Shanghai for perhaps a year or two, and I was surprised by how much the food quality seems to have deteriorated. We ordered three dishes that I had either enjoyed before or was familiar with: Wuxi Pork Ribs: The ribs were quite decent, tender and juicy, with a nicely balanced sauce. But there was nothing particularly memorable about them. The menu says the secret recipe has been passed down through generations for more than 110 years, but I found that claim hard to reconcile with what was on the plate. Slow-roast a slab of pork ribs for four hours at 250°F, I can get a very similar result at home. Famous Assorted Bowl: This used to be one of my favorite dishes here, and I ordered it almost every time I visited. Unfortunately, this time it was a real disappointment. The ingredients no longer tasted freshly prepared, well-seasoned, or flavorful. Instead, much of the dish had the bland, slightly lifeless quality of previously frozen food. Even the shrimp in the soup did not taste particularly fresh. Boiled Shredded Dry Bean Curd with Chicken and Shrimp: This is a classic Yangzhou dish and another item I used to order regularly. In the past, the bean-curd sheets were cut into extremely fine threads, with a soft and delicate texture that absorbed the flavor of the broth beautifully. This time was completely different. The bean-curd threads were hard and dry, with the texture of a packaged frozen product, and they had absorbed almost none of the broth's flavor. What had once been a delicate, carefully prepared dish now tasted surprisingly flat. Overall, Tipsy Shanghai used to be a restaurant I returned to for several specific dishes. Came here today with family - we were a party of 5. Saw this place on social media and we decided to check it out. Was with family - in the moment and enjoying so I have no photos, sadly. Their alcohol menu consists of beer and wine. Tsing tao and Sauvignon blanc were our drinks of choice - as they were out of both options of sake. To eat - we had a little of everything - the wonton soup, veggie dumplings, pork soup dumplings, the ribs, braised beef noodles, the eggplant dish and ones of the fish. Everything was absolutely delish and the service was quick. They were also out of the dessert we wanted - the green tea cheesecake but we had the pumpkin dessert which was phenomenal! The front counter was chaotic; a new hire kept mixing up orders, gave away another customer's food, and almost handed me the wrong bag twice, requiring me to explain my order three times. Stopped by for a quick lunch. Food came out promptly after ordering. I got the boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili, black truffle fried rice, pan fried xiaolongbao, and the steamed xiaolongbao (which I forgot to get a picture of). Overall, the food was alright. I think it satisfied the craving without having to wait to sit or travel far for. The boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili had lots of fish and relatively mid tasting. It's a good place. The food is authentic, the servers are quick and very nice. The place is a nice local vibe even in the city and the prices are fairly reasonable. The xiao long bao was a bit think and needed a bit more flavor. The sweet and sour rubs came out quickly but were a little overcooked among them tough. The shrimp sui mai was good and had a nice size to them. I'm sure if I had other options, there would be better choices with great flavors. Still a good spot to try out. read more

The location and menu looked pretty authentic. Everything from the stewed fish slices to the crispy orange beef was spot on, with generous portions. However, the Xiao Long Bao was a bit lacking. I'm not sure if it was steamed too long or left in the steamer and prepped too far ahead of time, but about half of them came already leaking their broth. I also wanted to try their signature smoked carp, but they were out, as well as the sticky rice with chicken. This place really has that authentic Shanghainese taste since there's a butt load of sugar in every dish. I enjoyed my eel noodle soup and the noodle was so silky like the one you get in Shanghai. One of the incorrect dishes, Famous Assorted Bowl or something, had 3 famously mushy, disgusting prawns on a pile of cabbage.
