Made to feel like you're transported to an old Japanese village, this restaurant boasts bamboo panels and clay-tiled roofs with kabuki masks and paper lanterns adorning the walls. But Kin Ramen isn't just all style and no substance. The food, too, was just as delightful as the decor. The buta bara, marinated pork belly stuffed with scallions, was wonderfully meaty and perfectly charred. It was a great dish to start. The pork chashu was creamy, the noodles had a good chew, the yolk on that boiled egg was expertly firm yet gooey. This is certainly a great date-night spot paired with an evening at the Moma. The decor was so cute here! It feels like you're eating at a true ramen shop in the heart of Japan. The seats were quite close to each other so you could hear the conversations next to you, but the lively atmosphere makes it cozy. They provide crates for you to place your belongings by your table. One of my new favorite ramen spots - I've returned quite a few times since my first time a year or so ago and even though it's not in a particularly good food neighborhood, it definitely makes my personal list of favorite ramen spots in the city. Specifically, get their regular kin ramen (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) and you'll find a deeply flavorful broth that hits all the notes, with jammy ramen eggs and thick cut pork donkotsu, nicely seasoned and cooked with nice chewy noodles of the perfect texture. They have a pretty big cocktail menu too of solid and creative cocktails, and most of the standard japanese appetziers but their ramen is really where they shine. It's a bit of a hidden gem and I find myself coming back again and again. No reservations, but it's not too long of a wait. You need whole parties to sit though. There are two floors. read more

My review is only about the Spicy Kin Ramen. I can't really give it more than 3 stars because although the quality of the broth was high, it came in a small bowl and was not satisfying. There were two very thin slices of pork and very little broth. I usually struggle to finish a ramen, but this time it was over in a few minutes. This place is so popular you need to show up at 4:30p if you don't want to wait outside in the cold. I stayed at a hotel next door for a few weeks and noticed there was always a line outside Kin Ramen, pretty much every single day. That alone told me it had to be good. I finally made time to go right after they opened for lunch on a Friday... and yep, there were already people lining up. I grabbed a seat at the bar. The place is small but cozy, with really cool decor, and I was immediately greeted by their friendly staff. I started with the cucumber salad, then went for the Shio Truffle Ramen since I wasn't in the mood for a heavy pork broth and wanted to try something a little different. It was recommended by the bartender, and he nailed it. The Shio Truffle Ramen has a homemade chicken broth, chicken chashu, half ajitama, bean sprouts, menma, nori, shiso, and truffle paste, and wow, SO good. Flavorful, comforting, and not too heavy. They also have a pretty broad menu beyond ramen, including don, poke, many appetizers and rice bowls, as well as a full bar. I'm so glad I made time to stop by before leaving NYC. Came here on a weeknight around 8:30 and the place was packed, but we were luckily able to find a seat upstairs (the dining room is split into two levels). It's very cozy, the menu is anime themed which is really fun, it reads like a comic book. Upon learning that they offered a Meowjito (exactly as it sounds - a mojito served in a cat shaped glass) I had to have it, and it did not disappoint. I took a gamble and ordered one of their ramen specialties on the seasonal menu items (I unfortunately forgot the name) but it was creamy and made with coconut broth. This is my go to place every time I'm in town. The location is super convenient (next to Thompson). It's a small, cozy space that makes you feel like you're in Japan. The staff is very efficient and fast. I get the soy vegan ramen every time and it's consistently good, the broth is more of a creamy broth which is very different from regular ramen broth. A friend and I randomly came here before seeing Alvin Ailey at City Center. I was taken aback by the line when I arrived at 5:30 on a Friday but I figured that meant the ramen was good. The line moved quickly enough someone came out to see the size of all of the parties and we were sat by party size and availability as well as when we arrived. Once inside, it's small but they use the space well. There was also a good playlist going which was nice. My friend and I both had the seafood ramen. It came out quickly and it was very good. From the pictures, it looks nice, and well decorated but we came for a Sunday lunch and they were playing 160 bpm nightcore Hatsune Miku music. We stumbled across this place by staying at the Thompson next door. It was near the end of lunch. We were promptly seated and the service was great especially being that it was obvious that we just squeaked in before they closed. The atmosphere made me feel like I was back in Japan and I felt like I was at a little street diner in Tokyo. This small Ramen shop was near Carnegie Hall and the Thompson Hotel, and was excellent. We came in for an early dinner before going out to a Broadway show and the Ramen was perfect. It's a little cozy inside but the servers were attentive and the food quality was authentic and portion sizes were large enough that you don't need to worry about dessert. What a joke. I asked for white rice instead of ramen noodles because I have a wheat allergy. The restaurant refused, insisting they "don't do substitutions," even though this was an extremely reasonable accommodation request. I've had better ramen personally elsewhere that was a tad better but this is still very good itself. The only issue I have that tags it down a star is certain prices for ramen seem a bit steep, and one person in our party had to wait a little longer than the rest of us for her food. But hey there we're apologetic about it though so that's good. Came here after seeing Jimmy O Yang on a Saturday so it was close to closing time but the place was still packed. It is not a big place but once we sat, we understood why. In Japan, ramen is like fast food. You order, sit and eat pretty quickly. I guess at NY prices, people want to enjoy the experience. Some people sat there for almost 2 hours, which would be unheard of in Japan. That being said, It is a very nice experience. The tea cups and bowls are pretty decorative. The food was also very good. One of the couples we were with are Vegan and their Vegan options were excellent according to them. We ordered Ube Tempura and Agedasji tofu dishes for the table and they were very tasty, especially given they were vegan. The Kin Ramen I ordered was very good and Cathie ordered the Kara Kaisen Ramen, which was also very good. Her noodles were a little wider and so a little chewier. The "Kara" option for all ramen is the spicier version although it is not really spicy and you can order extra bowl of spice sauce if you want to make it spicier. I preferred the spicy version so will get this when we come back. The only knock I would have is that I wish they gave you a choice of noodles and different doneness levels. I had heard of this spot over a year ago and had tagged it as a spot I wanted to hit next time I was in town. Well I was in town the other week and made a special trip up to Kin. From Greenwich is was just a quick train ride to uptown. A small walk form the station, down some steps, and a comfy spot at the small bar up in the nose of the restaurant. I was set. I don't want to overstate it, but it was a magical spot. Most of the tables were full of pleased customers chit chatting. I don't know the rules of it, but every time some one arrived or left, someone in the staff said something, and they all yelled something together in response. Pretty cool. I got the good ol Tonkotsu. It was excellent. I should mention my bar buddy for lunch was a samurai and a Godzilla statue, facing off.
