We tried a lot of different dishes and ended up probably liking 70% of what we ordered. Some were much better than others. The conch sashimi was very fishy - would not recommend. The yakitori was ok while the fish collar, wagyu rice were both highlights. Some of the prices were very high for the product.
Found some plastic in my curry, so unfortunately giving this place a 1. I also was not impressed by the food. It might have been due to what I ordered- I noticed later that they had a wooden menu hung up on their wall that was possibly more seasonal, and maybe should have ordered from that instead, but I was in the mood for something filling. What I ordered: Takoyaki - 3/5. Pretty average takoyaki, very heavy on the sauce, small pieces of octopus. Earl Gray Umeshu - 2/5. Way too sweet, and I couldn't taste the earl gray. Tonkatsu Curry - 1/5. The tonkatsu was a bit tough, and there were some really off-tasting pieces. The curry was a decent beef curry with a standard flavor. As I mentioned, I found a big piece of plastic in the curry, which threw me off for the rest of the meal. Staff was friendly and apologetic and the atmosphere was nice, but I've found way better options in the area.
Great izakaya spot, and surprising since it's so close to Times Square. The staff are super friendly. I enjoyed everything I ordered, but highlights for me were the deep fried tofu, pork rib Yakitori, enoki and bacon Yakitori, and grilled miso mackerel.
Our last dinner in NY! At this point, we were both tired from walking and didn't want to spend too much time thinking about where to go for dinner - so we chose somewhere walkable from our hotel and somewhere cozy that had some comfort food. We were a bit worried about bringing our puppy but they were super accommodating and our pup KO'd in the booth the entire time, and the two of us got to relax and enjoy a delicious meal. We loved both the drinks we got, and most of the dishes. I wasn't a big fan of their grilled beef tongue but everything else was great. It wasn't a fancy meal, but definitely the perfect place for us to end our trip. After dinner, since we were recharged, we walked around the Rockefeller center & Time Square otw back to our hotel. Even though Heno Heno wasn't originally on our itinerary, I could see myself coming back here again if/when I'm in the area!
Owned and operated by Japanese people (kind of rare to find true Japanese restaurants nowadays..) food were good, yakitori and omelet over rice were very good. The beef tongue that supposed to be their signature dish end up tasting bad... eel over rice could get more sauce. Would come back, cute place not too crowded on a weekday.
A restaurant in Hell's Kitchen within walking distance of Broadway, we came here looking for a nice Japanese dinner before a show. The service was friendly and the food was quick. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and the chicken was cooked well. The futomaki was delicious and the array of adult beverages they had were impressive. We recommend ordering several small dishes to share. A great place to come by for a light meal before a show.
Came for dinner on a Friday night before a Broadway show. They take reservations on Yelp and we had no trouble booking ahead. Started with a toki high ball (happy hour until 6:30) which was tasty if not very alcoholic. My boyfriend and I then shared: + simmered firefly squid + Takoyaki + chicken skin + salmon and salmon roe + Potato salad The chicken skin was by far the best bite. Also really liked the takoyaki and potato salad. Overall a good and speedy pre-show option!
Yummy small dishes, perfect for sharing. Great happy hour ($5 Sapporo, $7 sake, $5 wine, $5 yuzu soda), perfectly located for pre-theatre.
TLDR: Beer? Izakaya? Yes, come here. A tad pricy, but that beef tongue is remarkable. Sashimi? NO! STAY AWAY especially from the 4 pieces. It's not only a trap but NOT FRESH. Each piece was mushy, and it may ruin your entire experience. - - - - - - Good ol' Izakaya and beer is what one could expect at Heno Heno, and yes it did provide that! My friend and I visited for a quick sapparo sapporo pitcher and izakaya experience in beef tongue and squid. The beef tongue was AMAZING - incomparable to any of my experiences at yakiniku or KBBQ - as medium rare was it could get, with the perfect char and mix of "still lightly beating." Whoever the chef was that made these - mmmmm! The squid was also tasty, and none were overcooked to the point of rubbery. The sauce was a bit too overpowering, but not overbearing. Overall, the price points on these weren't too bad though on the higher end. Pictures may be tempting, and so can raw fish, so we ordered their five kinds of sashimi - 4 pieces of each. Sheesh was that MISTAKE, and how I wish we either didn't order it or try for two pieces first. To make a long story short, the sashimi was NOT fresh, and it tasted so lukewarm and mushy that it ruined the ENTIRE experience. The staff were friendly, and the vibes were good, but that sashimi was not it.
My kid wanted ramen so we took a walk over to restaurant row to try Heno Heno. It was a Tuesday night and we ended up not needing the reservation we made since lots of seating was available. Very cute, tucked in spot. All the servers were warm and friendly. They have a wide variety of wines and beverages and the food was delicious. We will be back for sure!
A cute little izakaya place that's perfect for pre and post show. Came here on a Wednesday night at 6pm before my broadway show and there were a few tables occupied and a couple people at the bar. They have an expansive menu including sashimi, ramen, rice bowls and also a special menu on the wall. We ordered multiple small dishes which included the corn spring roll, oden, soft shell crab, uni with yuzu pepper, kaki fry, chicken thigh skewers, grilled rice balls, grilled salmon belly, tamagoyaki, and pork katsu beef curry. The soft shell crab was very flavorful, the corn spring roll filling was creamy yet not heavy with a lot of crabs inside. The oysters were fresh and juicy. However, they all seemed a little oily and heavy by the time we were done eating them and the paper underneath them were all soaked with oil. The oden was ok. The broth was not as hearty and tasty as I would like. There was also a piece of hair that got stuck in the egg so they had to make another one for me. The uni was a disappointment as I thought I was over marinated where you can't even taste the uni. It was also way too salty to eat by itself so I waited for the grilled rice balls to come so I can eat them together. Their grilled items however, were excellent. We ordered both the soy and miso grilled rice balls. The soy one was ok and could use a little more sauce for the grilling. The miso was my favorite as it had just the right amount of miso to rice ratio. Their chicken thigh skewers were also grilled to perfection. It was very tender and aromatic. However, it would be nice to have more variety as we thought there were limited skewer options available. Their tamagoyaki came out freshly made and hot. Texture was on point. However, I thought it lacked the umami flavor and the hint of sweetness that you often find it the omelette. It could use more dashi and the grated daikon was a little dry. The grilled salmon belly was one of our favorite dish. It was moist and tender and the skin was crispy. Also another favorite was their pork katsu beef curry. The curry was very hearty and flavorful. The cut of the pork was nice with minimal fat. The only thing is I wished they didn't pour the curry on top of the pork katsu as it was no longer crispy by the time we tried the dish. Overall, it's a great option for small plates. The restaurant had plenty of comfortable seatings. The staff were friendly and attentive and were very apologetic with the hair incident. Although some of their dishes were a miss, I would still come back for their curry.

One of my absolute new favorite spots in NYC! Heno Heno literally feels like you've been transported to Tokyo. We came in around 11pm on a Wednesday night and were seated next to a full and lively table of Japanese salarymen drinking and eating after work. If that doesn't scream authentic, I don't know what does. We ordered a variety of yakitori (which you can either get with teriyaki sauce or salted), sashimi, and a great bottle of sake the server recommended. Everything was delicious and the menu was massive, so I can't wait to try more. There's old Japanese and Western movies posters and handwritten menu signs in Japanese all over the walls. Definitely come here if you're in the area, especially for dinner and drinks/bites. read more

Been here a couple of times, and it's been consistently... mid? Maybe I should stop coming then, lol. It's just nice to be able to order a variety of food as their menu is pretty expansive. Food is aite - nothing to rave or complain about IMHO. I'd think that it is authentic given how many native Japanese people eat there every time I visit? My issue is more with the service; the employees are a bit hard to flag down even when it's not super busy, but they are nice once you manage to get their attention. read more

Wow, what a fine! We were just strolling down restaurant row after a show trying to find something that was open to get a light bite. This place was great. The salmon sashimi was delightful and the scallop sashimi was off the charts good. My husband got like a kind of a marinated hanker steak. It was a small portion, but delicious as well. I think they're open really late. The surface was great atmosphere was also fun. I would definitely go back. read more

Japanese food was a must while my son and I were visiting NY. I was looking for omurice in particular. I foujd heno heno and wanted to give it a try. We arrived and was seated promptly. Not too busy on a Sunday night plus it was snowing out. It's dark inside and I love the ambiance. We browsed through the menu to figure out what we wanted. I started off with a grapefruit sour. It was refreshing and tasty. For food we decided to order a few things to share. We did chicken skewer, takoyaki, omurice, hamachi Kama and fried cheese. Everything was delicious. I loved the omurice. The Demi glace was good and plus I tasted ketchup. The hamachi Kama was also my favorite. Food and service were both good here. I would come back here. Highly recommend. read more
Had a great meal the other day. It's quietly tucked away on W 46th St, on a lower level. Step down into this vibey hole in the wall decorated with movie posters. The menu is massive with tons of small bites to choose from. You could keep it simple and order a couple, or go all in and order a bunch with a group. Tried the grilled eel box which was so tender and served with the perfect amount of sauce & rice, the classic tuna roll which you can't go wrong with, and the fried quail egg skewer. Everything was delicious. They have a really impressive drink menu which I skipped this time but I'd be down to try some next time! read more

Love this place! Especially love the 3 sake tasting for $15. Suigei has been my fave so far but also liked the Dassai 45 followed by the waitress' rec of Kikusui. For food, I really liked the takoyaki, omelette appetizer, Ebi shrimp appetizer, and the tuna don. The gyoza and salmon avocado roll weren't bad either. My husband loved the fried tofu appetizer. Skip the omelette rice entree - it had a weird tangy ketchup sauce that neither of us loved. They also have a HH including on weekends for drink discounts. Will definitely return! read more

Solid Japanese restaurant. Having recently returned from Japan, I was excited to try an authentic Japanese restaurant again in the States. However, my to-go meal - beef curry rice with pork cutlet - was very mediocre here. It just didn't have much flavor and the meat wasn't especially tender. The yabe taki udon was better, but still quite small for the price. Sushi was about average. The rice ball was quite good; I'd definitely order it again. Prices weren't too bad but also not especially cheap. Though you can make reservations, they weren't needed, although the restaurant did fill up around 7pm on a Saturday evening. Staff were friendly and attentive. A few things to be aware about: 1.) They don't allow outside food or drinks, even if it's sealed. Fortunately for me, they were nice enough to let me put my unopened boba in their fridge. 2.) You can't order to-go meals in the restaurant. Well, you can, but you need to package it yourself. They'll give you a hot meal and a takeout container, and you'll need to package it up. read more

I didn't make reservations, and I don't think that you need to as I went on Friday night, and there are tons of restaurants in the area too. This place was vibrant, and the servers were great. There's many waiters walking around that can take your order. Just be sure at the end to take a look at your receipt to make sure that your receipt is accurate. Regarding the food, I ordered two skewers, fried Octopus, beef udon, grilled squid, and beef tongue. I liked the udon as it was really tasty. The skewers were good, too, as it wasn't salty. I didn't like how they charged extra for spicy mayo when I asked for spicy sauce in general. All in all, I'm not sure if I would go back as there are so many restaurants in the neighborhood read more

My partner and I were looking for a quick meal on the healthier side before seeing a Broadway show, and we stumbled upon this place on Yelp. We made a reservation on Yelp 30 minutes before and we're seated right away on arrival. Service was very fast and attentive. We made it just in time for Happy hour and they even came around to let us know it was last call. It had a nice, warm, "late night" vibe inside. Food was nothing out of this world, but a very decent and reasonably priced meal! read more

Cute small izakaya place in Hell's Kitchen. We came by at 530 on Saturday and were still in time for happy hour which included $4 beers and $5-6 hi balls and hi chus. We started off with two of the seasonal specials, grilled eggplant and fried oysters. The oyster were amazing! The eggplant was in a very salty sauce and probably my least favorite dish of the night. The izakaya skewers were average and the breast was really dry. We dipped it in the cod to give it more flavorful. Next time I will pass on the skewers. The katsu curry rice and cod udon were both great. Service was quick and friendly. read more
I've been here two times for the happy hour. The prices during the happy hour are very good, especially for the area. The happy hour is available even during saturdays. The food was good for the price, nothing fancy but what is to be expected at an izakaya. I recommend it for smaller groups for catching up over some drinks and japanese bar food. It is not very loud and that was a plus for me. read more

Heno heno is the definition of a solid go-to neighborhood sushi spot! The prices are reasonable and foods are classic and comforting. Honestly so much of New York Asian food is so fusion-y, overly sweet, and trying to be the next new thing that I crave the classic / homemade style foods like at Heno Heno. I've come by a couple times and also gotten takeout and always had a great experience. The salmon don is my go to because for $19, the portion of raw salmon is incredibly generous and fresh. I introduced a friend to this restaurant since it was close to both of us and she is equally if not more obsessed with the salmon don, ordering it for takeout many times after. I've also gotten the nabeyaki udon, yellowtail jalapeno roll, and grilled squid all of which I've enjoyed. I am personally not the greatest fan of squid, but to my surprise quite liked it here and it had a nice flavor! The only thing I didn't notice at first until a friend pointed it out was that they don't have nigiri on their menu (at least online) which is surprising for a sushi restaurant. Maybe they might still make it if you ask, but if your go to at a sushi restaurant is nigiri probably good to keep in mind that they may not have it. Overall, no complaints about heno heno and am always excited to go back! read more
