My friend and I dined here for a late lunch. The space was modern looking with light colors and some pops of color throughout. The friend I came with got the Ramen, informing our waiter she has a severe dairy and fish allergy. After she was served, the waiter returned to let us know there was milk in the broth and took it away. I believe this was preventable and am thankful that she only tried 1 spoonful. The waitress tried her best to accommodate my friend by offering a custom made broth, but my friend ended up ordering something else. It was Happy Hour when we went, so some of the smaller menu items were half off. From those options, I selected the Shrimp Tempura Roll. For my entree, I ordered the Korean BBQ Rice Bowl. The Shrimp Tempura Roll was tasty with satisfyingly crispy, light, and tender shrimp. The Korean BBQ beef was mixed with onion, green onion, sesame seeds, and egg over the rice. I thought that the egg would be cooked, but instead, it was raw egg yolk. I didn't mind too much, as I stirred it into the hot rice. The BBQ Beef was tender and well seasoned, with the onion adding a fresh touch. I would've liked to have more veggies in there, since the meat and rice were such a heavy, hearty dish. Service was good. Our waitress was friendly and everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were reasonable. My college friend and I met up at Tenjou for a quick lunch last Monday. It's close to the office, and I heard good things about their food, particularly the omurice. OMURICE - 23 I haven't had a ton of omurice, but this was easily the best I've had, and pretty affordable too. No fancy rose or tornado shaping here -- just the classic bloop in the middle, sliced open, then flop! The black pepper sauce was chef's kiss, and the fried rice (with onions, mushroom, and chicken) was super flavorful. It also came with a small cutlet of chicken katsu on the side, which was fine but nothing special. GYU BEEF DON - 20 Very large portion, and we ended up with half leftover since we prioritized on finishing the omurice. It was solid but not particularly memorable, felt like something I could replicate at home. The beef was a bit chewy, and the rice leaned a little too sticky. Other than that, it was well-seasoned and the sauce was flavorful. Overall, generous portions and a great lunch spot near the office. My friends and I were looking for an affordable dinner spot in the Flatiron area when I came across Tenjou, which I had bookmarked to try. The crew was very much into the idea, so we agreed to meet there one night. The restaurant was located right on a busy stretch of 23rd Street, but it also managed to be relaxed, quiet, sleek, and modern. It was a welcome respite to the hecticness outside. Two of my friends had arrived before the rest of us, and they had ordered some happy hour specials while they waited. The restaurant had several drink and food specials to choose from, and I got to sample the Popcorn Chicken and Takoyaki Octopus Balls when I joined them. I am not typically a fan of fried food, but the chicken bites had been seasoned before they were battered, and they were actually really good. The octopus rounds were topped with Japanese mayonnaise and largely shaved bonito flakes; these were delicious in flavor, but the octopus was rather tough. For my individual meal, I ordered the Hawaii Bowl, a poke mixture of sushi rice topped with furikake, cucumber, mango, corn, seaweed salad, avocado, salmon, tuna, and sesame sauce. I also just had to try my favorite standby, an Eel Avocado Roll. Both were FANTASTIC! Every ingredient was fresh, colorfully ripe, and super flavorful. In fact, the roll was probably one of the best I had ever had. I enjoyed my meal with a glass of the Decoy Cabernet Sauvignon, which was not a typical match for seafood, but was a recognizable brand from the wine list. I should note that from the start to the end of our experience, the staff was just so inviting. Everyone greeted us and said goodbye as we left, plus they were attentive, while also allowing us to linger endlessly after our meal. I'd more accurately give this a 3.5 but am rounding down when you factor in value. I eyed this place in a prime location on 23rd and 5th next to Eataly and the Lego store with suspicion. The menu was just too long, covering vastly different categories like sushi, donburi, and ramen all on a single menu. Yes it's all Japanese food, but typically good Japanese restaurants focus on just one. This place is filled with mostly tourists too, but I walked by enough times to give in to my curiosity just once. While the place was full on the Saturday afternoon I visited, we were seated right away, got our orders taken, and were served pretty quickly. The omurice was cut tableside and had the right runny texture. The chicken katsu that came on the side was made of what might've been thigh meat which is not my favorite, since I still feel new to eating meat and get the meat ick. But the rice under the egg was surprisingly flavorful and buttery. The special rolls we ordered, one with shrimp tempura, salmon, and tuna and another with spicy tuna, avocado, and cream cheese were served warmer than what I'm used to with sushi. I suppose it's because there were a lot of fried elements in these rolls, but it threw us off a little. All the dishes were not bad overall but two rolls and two bowls after tax and tip was nearly a hundred bucks. I guess that's par for the course for a place like this but I will promptly forget this meal as soon as I'm done writing this review. read more

The atmosphere is more casual and menu smaller than your typical Japanese restaurant in New York, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food from the kitchen. The chicken yaktori was small but mighty, with a sweet glaze and nice bite of leek. The Crab Tempura Dream was filled with crunchy rock shrimp and topped with a generous portion of kani, I liked that the ratio of rice to filling leaned heavily on the filling side. Made a reservation while staying outside of the city for here after doing some searching for ramen spots. My reservation was for 8:00, but due to my schedule and the quickness of things I was able to get there about 7:30 and checkin, alerting them I was obscenely early. I was able to sit at the bar as a solo, which was fine with me. Bright colors, somewhat loud but they are busy and wood accents with diffused lighting. Nice place. I ordered a pork and chicken bun to start with a Tenjou roll. I think I got two pork buns bc there really was no discernible difference between the two. The sauce on them was kind of thin and runny but the flavor made up for it - very good. The tenjou roll was arguably the best non-local sushi place favorite roll I have had while traveling, warm, great flavor on top, and the crunch of the fry on it was all very very good. For my entree (I was really hungry and just came from a spin class ok?) I ordered the black garlic pork tonkotsu ramen. This was good - standard issue ramen. The service was very good and attentive, I was able to eat, pay and keep it moving in a fair amount of time. Also from order to first time may have been 4 minutes. The only issue I can think of was the ramen came out before the starters. Not a problem. Would recommend as a place to get ramen while in the midtown/iron area. read more

​Finally had the chance to stop by for dinner after it opened a few months ago. It was pretty busy when we arrived around 6pm on a Saturday, but there were still a few tables available for our party of 2. The restaurant is decently spacious, and the clean and minimalist decor made for a very welcoming environment. We ordered the omurice (I think their speciality), the Hawaii poke bowl, and two of the sushi rolls (salmon and yellowtail/scallion). The omurice was very delicious. The egg was cooked expertly, to the perfect runny-ness/texture, and the brown sauce was very nice, adding some savouriness to the omelette without being too heavy or salty. The fried rice was not bad, but I don't think there was anything too notable about it. We chose the pork cutlet (instead of chicken) and it was also fine. The meat had a nice flavour but it was just a pretty average katsu. The Hawaii bowl was fine. The fish had a lovely, fresh flavour which went nicely with the sesame sauce. However, the veggies (cucumber and avocado in particular) did not taste very fresh -- had a bit of an overripe/old flavour to them. Not the worst, but definitely detracted from the overall bowl. The sushi rolls were pretty good. Like the fish in the poke bowl, they were fresh and tasty. Overall, the meal was not bad, but I don't think it was anything particularly fantastic. The price point was also on the higher side, especially for the portion sizes. I think I'd want to try one of their ramen or yakitori options if I come back in the future, but don't think I'm in too much of a rush to do so. read more

Checked out Tenjou based on all the videos I saw about this place online. I came with a party of 7 and booked a reservation in advance since it was a weekend. The restaurant is spacious and has more tables upstairs for bigger parties, which was good so that we could hear each other better (wasn't as loud). The service was quick and the staff were all very friendly. I ordered the Tokyo Tonkatsu Ramen, and I thought it was delicious! On top of that, it was the perfect amount of food for its price. I thought the broth was flavorful and the noodles had the perfect texture. I also ordered their Thai Iced Tea which was good as well, but nothing mind blowing in comparison to other Thai teas.
