Hamachi is packed on a Monday at lunchtime, with delivery people so crowded in the doorway that one can hardly get in...that is a good sign, of course, though you wonder if you have entered the wrong way. Once fully inside, the restaurant has comfortable booths and friendly service. The menu is full of unusual combinations of various fish and vegetables mixed in rolls, combinations that are hard to imagine, but may be wonderful or may not be. Since this was new to me, I ordered a sushi lunch set and a clear soup I expected to be a Japanese clear soup. The sushi set came with a salad, that came covered in heavy dressing. (Note that we were asked about allergies not about whether we wanted dressing or not.) The salad was basically lettuce, not exciting. The clear soup was mushroom broth, no relation to Japanese clear soup which has a fish stock. It was not what I thought I was ordering. My sushi set also was a reasonable size but just not exciting., None of the fish had any distinctive flavor. So I cannot say I had anything to complain about, but Hamachi is a place for a quick, satisfactory, reasonably priced lunch but in NYC, there are a lot of other choices. read more

Great service. Very friendly staff. Attentive with water refilling and order details. One of the rolls we order was a salmon cucumber. When the rolls came, there came a salmon avocado roll instead of a salmon cucumber. When she introduced each roll, she said salmon cucumber from her memory whilst looking at the salmon avocado and caught that the roll was incorrect. I don't know if she would've remembered if it was busier (there were only 2 occupied tables when we visited), but that attentiveness and memory was impressive. The sushi itself wasn't bad. I wouldn't recommend the raw fish rolls, nigri, or sashimi because the spicy yellowtail roll and salmon cucumber roll were oddly tasteless. Usually there probably is some vinegar-y seasoning in sushi rice that I wouldn't even think to note, but the plain fish rolls were just so tasteless, unlike how the same rolls would taste at other places. The special rolls were good though, probably because they had more sauce. The dragon roll and rainbow rolls we got were good, although the rainbow roll did mostly taste like the snowcrab mayo mix filling, which I don't mind. The Sushi Sandwich Roll was very filling. It had a heavy mayo taste, and the texture was all mush. I feel like some crunch texture would've helped, maybe from some raw veggies. The amount feels like it was two rolls in one, so for the price it's great. I probably would get it again if I was really hungry! The sushi roll pieces were not small, and I like that the filling to rice ratio was like 80-20. I really appreciate them not using a ton of rice and not skimping on the filling. I also like that this place uses a crab and mayo mix in their rolls rather than just a stick of imitation crab. Most places in NYC / the East Coast I see just use an imitation cran stick. I really enjoyed their sushi and I haven't seen a spot that has such a great price for crispy rice. Happy hour here is top notch and includes weekends too. I started with a Shirley Temple which was standard and $5. For happy hour bites, I got the Crispy Rice w. Spicy Tuna. Crispy Rice w. Spicy Salmon, and Pork Gyoza. The crispy rice bites are so flavorful and there are 6 in an order. $8 for that is insanely good. The gyoza dumplings were also juicy with a nice fried bottom. As for the sushi, the quality of fish they use is amazing and they don't skimp. We got the spicy tuna crispy rice, which was a good portion but not my favorite crispy rice. The rice was very hard and a bit stale. Bit of a rough review I'm afraid. 5/5 decor, friendly staff and available tables at peak time on Friday night. Quick with the tap water which I appreciate 4/5 Only one bathroom but clean and sink outside so you don't spend as much time inside the bathroom. No towels or hand dryer I assume that's an oversight on a busy Friday night. 3/5 house salad is fine, miso soup is fine. Not good not bad just average 2/5 the sushi and sashimi were not good, they weren't actively gooey or rancid, but they were the worst non lethal sushi I've had. I have had sushi that was 1/5 I sent it back to the kitchen. this was just like eating rubbery air, zero taste, nothing good but again it wasn't rancid. If you can't do sushi, what kind of sushi restaurant are you ? 1/5 nothing this bad Overall going to give it a 3/5, the price was low for nyc sushi, maybe it's farmed? Maybe it's frozen? Maybe it's the worst cut, but it's filling and priced low and they sat us right away. $68 for 2 of us and that included a 20% tip. Sushi sandwich (Pizza Roll): This was my favorite roll by far! I loved the sandwich concept of it with the variety of fish packed together by the rice! The flavor of the sauce and fish mixed together made it taste very delicious. Rate 9.5/10. 2. Sexy on the Beach Roll: This roll had a strong and yummy salmon flavor. Although it was simple, it was still good! Rate 7.5/10. 3. Summertime Roll: This roll was mediocre. It lacked snow crab and wasabi mayo, and instead had too much cream cheese. I liked the mango on top though. Rate 6.5/10. 4. Volcano Roll: This roll was very underwhelming and disappointing. Hamachi 34 is a good spot for sushi that will not break the bank, but I would not travel a distance to eat here. Hamachi 34 is doing brisk business, with a full house on a Monday evening and people walking in the door. Delivery people are steadily picking up orders. I ordered their ultra value proposition of three rolls for $18 at dinner, which becomes $15 at lunch. The three rolls I ordered were spicy tuna, salmon skin, and shrimp avocado and added the Flying Dragon Roll of the Chef Special Menu. If you have had high end sushi, Hamachi 34 will impress you for its value proposition. If you are one who does not care about the different levels of tuna fattiness or are a sushi roll person who is not terribly concerned about nigiri or sashimi,then this is the place and it's priced right. The busy house is indicative of how good a value it is. So the details count with sushi and the soy sauce they have is pretty good, but the pickled ginger is on the dry side and the wasabi is far from freshly ground and is barely passable. The restaurant uses decent wooden disposable sticks and napkins. Let me get the surprising worst of the rolls out of the way first: the spicy tuna roll. It did not taste fresh nor did it have the desired texture and consistency. So the spicy tuna roll fell flat for my tastes. The shrimp avocado roll was surprisingly good in contrast, with good texture and freshness. The salmon skin roll was the best of the three, with crispness in texture highlighting its pop in flavor. I have found salmon skin rolls to be a "cannot miss with this" item and Hamachi 34 did not miss. I deliberated over whether to go with the regular Dragon Roll or the Flying Dragon Roll. Owing to their average at best spicy tuna, this put a damper on an otherwise excellent Flying Dragon Roll. The eel is coating the roll and is abundant for those who like eel. There is some sort of crunchy element inside to give a juxtaposed texture. If the spicy tuna were hittin' here, you would have an outstanding Flying Dragon Roll. I did not have anything else on the menu, but these rolls would give any sushi restaurant an opportunity to show what they can do. Perhaps Mondays are not the best for freshness here, but it remains to be seen if Hamachi 34 can improve upon the inconsistent experience next time I visit. Three stars read more

The front of the restaurant was packed with delivery drivers so it was impossible to get inside the restaurant and food was not ready when i arrived (probably because so many people had ordered).
