The Sweet Potato Tempura Roll was HORRIBLE
    Yueer L.

The decoration was amazing and the service is good so I honestly feel bad for leaving this review however I was SO DISAPPOINTED with the food. I can swear I've never eaten such a bad sweet potato roll before ever. The sweet potato was literally HARD TO CHEW like it was NOT FULLY COOKED and the sushi was literally ice cold. This is also the first time I am so certain a food is not fresh. I've never left a bad review for restaurants EVER before so trust me I was really shocked. The ambiance was very relaxing too but the food was just so bad. I was STARVING and I still couldn't enjoy it at the slightest.

Dude this place has THE BEST sushi that I had ever had. The ambience of this restaurant is really cool too, really comfortable for sure. My waitress was extremely pleasant, she was funny and overall just a wonderful experience. Their shrimp tempura rocks hard!

Amazing spot for happy hour conveniently located near Penn station. Super friendly and quick service. I will definitely be returning!!

Loved the variety of options for the sushi available. The sushi was affordable and the protein to rice ratio was very commendable. The sandwich was also very innovative but delicious. The staff were very polite and food came in very quickly. The atmosphere very cozy, I was seated in a booth. Overall, great experience.

Great service. Very friendly staff. Attentive with water refilling and order details. One of the rolls we order was a salmon cucumber. When the rolls came, there came a salmon avocado roll instead of a salmon cucumber. When she introduced each roll, she said salmon cucumber from her memory whilst looking at the salmon avocado and caught that the roll was incorrect. I don't know if she would've remembered if it was busier (there were only 2 occupied tables when we visited), but that attentiveness and memory was impressive. The sushi itself wasn't bad. I wouldn't recommend the raw fish rolls, nigri, or sashimi because the spicy yellowtail roll and salmon cucumber roll were oddly tasteless. Usually there probably is some vinegar-y seasoning in sushi rice that I wouldn't even think to note, but the plain fish rolls were just so tasteless, unlike how the same rolls would taste at other places. The special rolls were good though, probably because they had more sauce. The dragon roll and rainbow rolls we got were good, although the rainbow roll did mostly taste like the snowcrab mayo mix filling, which I don't mind. The Sushi Sandwich Roll was very filling. It had a heavy mayo taste, and the texture was all mush. I feel like some crunch texture would've helped, maybe from some raw veggies. The amount feels like it was two rolls in one, so for the price it's great. I probably would get it again if I was really hungry! The sushi roll pieces were not small, and I like that the filling to rice ratio was like 80-20. I really appreciate them not using a ton of rice and not skimping on the filling. I also like that this place uses a crab and mayo mix in their rolls rather than just a stick of imitation crab. Most places in NYC / the East Coast I see just use an imitation cran stick. Overall, not a bad little sushi restaurant! The interior is cozy, and I'd love to return to try their many other rolls!

This spot is always going viral on social media for how affordable their sushi is and I finally paid them a visit and I agree the hype is real! I really enjoyed their sushi and I haven't seen a spot that has such a great price for crispy rice. Happy hour here is top notch and includes weekends too. I started with a Shirley Temple which was standard and $5. For happy hour bites, I got the Crispy Rice w. Spicy Tuna. Crispy Rice w. Spicy Salmon, and Pork Gyoza. The crispy rice bites are so flavorful and there are 6 in an order. $8 for that is insanely good. The gyoza dumplings were also juicy with a nice fried bottom. As for the sushi, the quality of fish they use is amazing and they don't skimp. The Kani Salad was fresh and the Rainbow Roll and Sex On The Beach Roll both had lots of filling and a good fish to rice ratio. I also tried their Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura. Their tempura is classic and simple, with a nice side of white rice and comes with soup or salad. Service was good. The waiters kept coming to our table to ask if we needed anything or wanted to order more. It's also quite spacious inside. The sushi bar is towards the back and they have one restroom.

A very solid neighborhood sushi restaurant in Murray Hill. Ordered the Hot Girl Roll ($17) and the Godzilla Roll ($16.50). Both were very solid, although I probably would have been fine with just ordering one or the other as I was super stuffed after consuming both. Would come back again in the future.

    Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna(6pcs)

Came here with a friend on a weekday evening, and didn't have to wait! Their happy hour drink and food deals are quite food. We got the spicy tuna crispy rice, which was a good portion but not my favorite crispy rice. The rice was very hard and a bit stale. For our mains, we shared the yellowtail jalapeño roll, salmon avocado, and tiger roll. The rice to fish ratio was CHEFS KISS - better than most fancier sushi places I've been. The flavors weren't anything too special, but great value. Highly recommend for a casual dinner! I also see they have good lunch deals, so I will be returning.

Bit of a rough review I'm afraid. 5/5 decor, friendly staff and available tables at peak time on Friday night. Quick with the tap water which I appreciate 4/5 Only one bathroom but clean and sink outside so you don't spend as much time inside the bathroom. No towels or hand dryer I assume that's an oversight on a busy Friday night. 3/5 house salad is fine, miso soup is fine. Not good not bad just average 2/5 the sushi and sashimi were not good, they weren't actively gooey or rancid, but they were the worst non lethal sushi I've had. I have had sushi that was 1/5 I sent it back to the kitchen. this was just like eating rubbery air, zero taste, nothing good but again it wasn't rancid. If you can't do sushi, what kind of sushi restaurant are you ? 1/5 nothing this bad Overall going to give it a 3/5, the price was low for nyc sushi, maybe it's farmed? Maybe it's frozen? Maybe it's the worst cut, but it's filling and priced low and they sat us right away. $68 for 2 of us and that included a 20% tip. We did not finish the sushi or the sashimi, hopefully someone in the kitchen sent it to a good home.

Sushi was pretty decent. Wife and I stopped by for a snack while we were in midtown NYC. Jimmy was amazing and super attentive. Appreciated his upbeat vibes and attention to our needs . Dimly lit and anime themed but I didn't mind.

Delicious and fresh sushi! Ordered online and it was ready for pickup at the promised time even though they were pretty busy. Cool looking place as well! I forgot to take a picture of the sushi I was so hungry...

Great service with amusing servers at Hamachi 34 in Murray Hill, Manhattan, NYC. Minutes walk from Herald Square and Penn Station. Happy hour daily till 7 pm. Got a Yuzu and Matcha IPA on the happy hour specials. I got the Sapporo and my friend got the yuzu. Sushi, tempura, seaweed salad was super filling.

I really like the sushi here and the interior of the place! It's located in Midtown but towards Kips Bay so not as much foot traffic there. The interior is really well decorated but still gave a cozy atmosphere. Just like the interior, I also like how the sushi was presented! I got their sushi sandwich, sexy on the beach, and tiger roll.

It's not especially big, so you may have a bit of a wait if you frequent right at lunch or in the evening but whatever amount of time you have to wait it will be well worth it. Service is top tier but you come for the food. They have a varied menu with a lot of options so if you're bringing a buddy that isn't up for Katsu, they'll have plenty to choose from. The Katsu is the star and I think what sets this place apart is that they offer Berkshire pork katsu as an option. Arguably some of the best pork, it's great to have the option if you're looking to heighten the experience. I love their pork katsu and go nuts over the chicken katsu curry. It's super crispy, slightly greasy but never off-putting. And it's served with the most delicate and delicious cabbage slaw. I could eat a mountain of this it's so good. Highly recommended.

Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

(There's regular tables on the right hand side and a bar in the back.) The food and drink menu is available through QR codes at the table. We selected 6 dishes and 3 desserts to share. The Ankimo came with three pieces of monkfish liver and scallions in a ponzu wasabi sauce. It was a nice start to the meal, with its creamy texture and rich flavor. The Age Tofu came with three cubes of fried tofu that had a slightly chewy exterior and a pillowy soft interior. The bonito flakes and dashi broth gave it a punch of flavor. It was my first time ever having Mentaiko Pasta, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was creamy and the spiciness of the cod roe sauce was subtle--it kind of creeps up on you after a few bites and gives the dish a little kick. I felt like the cod roe flavor shone through, and the bacon added another dimension to it. The Hotate Carpaccio came with 6 slices of Hokkaido scallops, ikura, and a mustard soy dressing. It was a delicate dish that I enjoyed, especially after the heavier Mentaiko. The Cold Soba Green Tea was my favorite dish. It was so refreshing. All the ingredients went very well together--the green tea noodles had a good bite, the salmon sashimi was very fresh, the ikura added a nice brininess when you pop them, and the dashi broth provided a nice backdrop to the dish. The sashimi in the Kaisen Don was fresh, and came with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, octopus, and ikura. The dessert menu is found at the end of the drinks menu. We got one of each dessert: the sweet potato balls with hojicha ice cream, cheesecake with yuzu sorbet, and black sesame ice cream with red beans. The sweet potato balls were SOOO GOOD--crispy exterior and chewy interior, with just the right touch of sweetness. The hojicha ice cream was so good. We regret not having ordered an extra set of the sweet potato balls. The cheesecake was a little dry, but had these little rice crispies on top that gave a nice textural change. The yuzu sorbet was a good palate cleanser. The black sesame ice cream was rich and creamy, and the red bean sauce added an extra layer of sweetness. Sozai is a great place to share a few dishes. I definitely want to come back to check out the lunch specials.

Many of the clientele are Japanese so we knew we were at an authentic place. We got: - Fried oysters: the batter was light and crispy and oysters piping hot - Vinegared Mackerel w/ Ponzu Sauce: fresh & tangy - Intestines Hotpot: comforting & light despite the fattiness of the intestines - Creamed Mentai Udon: they split it in 2 small bowls for us since we were sharing. Udon had a nice bouncy chew and sauce was not heavy We also got a bottle of sake, and they poured it in a beautiful sake decanter to keep it cold. First time seeing cold sake presented this way which was very cool. We tried Suntory draft beer since that was the only draft they had, which was odd since most Japanese places carry Asahi/Sapporo, definitely not as light as the other two beers I'm used to. Even though I was stuffed by the end, I didn't feel lethargic, everything felt light without compromising flavor. As you step into the restaurant, you immediately feel a sense of formality and strictness. It's also very quiet in the restaurant, and friendly to solo diners, adding on more to the Japan-esque feel. The food is high quality here, but the portions are small, and it is pricey. I would budget to spend around $100 a person here after tip and tax, if you ignore the prices on the menu and try a variety of things. The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan. They have an extensive sake list and they also have the casual cocktail options like lemon drops you would find in Tokyo. The atmosphere really transports you straight into Japan if that is something you are looking for. Expect to pay a premium for small-ish portions, but at the same time very well-made and authentic food.
