Can confidently say this place lives up to the hype. As others have noted, you'll need to enter and walk up a sketchy looking staircase to get to this spot. If you want to eat here there are a few tables, but this is mostly a grab and go spot that's extremely casual - honestly kind of like eating sushi in an industrial factory. I walked up and asked for a menu since I didn't see one posted anywhere, and went with their chef's choice sushi for $37. In retrospect I wish I had sprung for the higher tier one with more pieces, because this was so damn good (and that higher tier option includes toro, my favorite). I waited about 15 minutes or so for my order, and what came out looked like a work of art. Every piece of sushi was melt in your mouth delicious and fresh. The fish to rice ratio was just right to me. I would come back here again and again and again. I wish I lived closer. If you want fresh sushi at a steal, this is the place.

This place has been on my list to try for years and while the fish was super fresh, the overall meal didn't stand out to me. The sushi pieces were so good and fish super fresh. I think where the meal fell short was on the rolls. I ordered the sushi premium set which comes with 10 piece sushi and negitoro roll. I also got a spicy scallop roll. Each sushi piece was flavorful and uni was the best I've ever had before! I'm not usually an uni fan but could've easily had many more of those. For the rolls, there was little fish inside and not as much flavor. If I were to order again, I'd focus just on sushi pieces or sashimi as that is truly where the star of the show was.

Food: This is a hole-in-the-wall sushi spot on the second floor in midtown above a retail shop. I decided to give it a try because of the good reviews online. The sushi was fresh, but I likely won't return because it wasn't anything special. They offer different sets and donburis for lunch and dinner along with a la carte pieces. Sets typically range from $20-$30. Portions were very small and didn't seem worthwhile for the price. I tried the toro uni donburi and sushi set which both come with a salad. The toro and uni were a bit disappointing. Toro pieces were very small and thin; some were even frozen which wasn't enjoyable. The uni was not good at all. The wasabi sprinkled all over the donburi was a bit overpowering. The rice is well seasoned and was cooked well; the nigiri was better than the donburi but still a very small portion and not a great value. Service: Staff were friendly. Ambiance: The place is very run down and messy. There are two tables and a few chairs in a small space to eat there if you want, but most people do takeout/delivery from there; it feels like you're eating in a storage room or warehouse. There are about 10 sushi chefs working in a small tight space behind the counter. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this sushi place and won't be returning.

My friend and I ordered delivery from Sushi 35 West on a Saturday early night. The food came quickly. When we first opened the bag of the delivery we were surprised by how small the bag was but it ended up being a good enough portion of food. We ordered the: -OMAKASE CHEF CHOICE: A pretty pricy order (~$130) but a good portion of sushi. The sushi rice itself was wonderful and perfectly seasoned. The bite of each sushi was ok, a bit slender but not too bad. All slices of fish were fresh and tasty. -EEL AVOCADO(~$12): This roll ended up being unnecessarily in our order since we got filled up by the omakase set. Flavor of the eel was great but the roll itself was a bit thin especially for the price. All in all, a great option for sushi pick up or delivery in the area!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Sushi 35 West yet since I've ordered from here a few times (lunch and dinner sets) and they have never disappointed me. Sushi is one of my favorite foods. I tried other sushi take out locations before, but have not been satisfied compared to Sushi 35 West. The quality of their fish and sushi rice is just fantastic. And despite it being pricey, you genuinely get what you pay for and it's delicious. Have to admit the location and place is a little odd looking, but it's truly a hole in the wall gem. You go up a flight of stairs from a cannabis shop, and there is very limited seating, but they mainly do take out. And if this contributes to reducing the cost, while providing quality sushi then I appreciate the intention!

If you're looking for top-tier sushi without the full sit-down restaurant vibe, this is the spot. You can get incredible cuts -- Toro, Uni, King Salmon, Scallop, you name it -- all for a reasonable price of what you'd pay at an omakase spot. The Food: 5/5 The quality here is unreal for the price point. Everything tastes so fresh and clean, and they really don't skimp on the cuts. It's easily comparable to places like Bondi or other upscale sushi restaurants, but honestly, I think it's even better in some ways because of how fresh everything feels. Like can you spend $135 ,yes, but you also can spend less then $100 and still be satisfied. The Service: 5/5 These people hustle. Even when it's busy, they get orders out in around 20 minutes -- and that's including omakase orders. You can tell the team works hard and really knows their craft. Vibe: 5/5 Fair warning: this place is hard to find the first time. It's kind of tucked away -- you'll have to walk up some stairs past a smoke shop, and it looks a little confusing from the outside. There are maybe three small tables upstairs, but it's not a dine-in kind of place. Once you figure it out, though, it's totally worth it. All in all, if you want fresh, high-quality sushi and don't mind taking it to go -- this is one of the best hidden gems in the city. It's not cheap, but it's absolutely worth every penny for the quality you're getting.

Fresh sushi at a great price, perfect for takeout. Ambience (1/5): Tiny hole-in-the-wall spot with almost no seating, so best to grab and go. (Did not factor this in my overall rating) Food (4/5): Sushi is fresh, generous in portion, and well-prepared. Value (4/5): Excellent quality for the price point. Would give a (3/5) if ordering delivery, since prices are higher. Service (4/5): Quick and straightforward, ideal for takeout orders.

This one's from Sushi 35 West -- their 15-piece nigiri box. $72 before fees, $100 delivered with tip. No miso soup, no roll, no ponzu -- just straight fish. And honestly? That's all you need when it's this good. Three each of torched fluke fin, scallop, chutoro, salmon, and otoro. Generous cuts. Warm, seasoned rice. Just perfect. No complaints. This is the kind of sushi that ruins other sushi. Endorphins. Activated. Is it pricey? Yes. Do I wish it came with a little more -- maybe a roll or some ponzu? Sure. But when the nigiri is god-tier, the rest is noise. Final grade: A More breakdowns on my TikTok: @therawreport

The sushi here is SO good! I found this spot online and read great things about it so figured I would get it for lunch on one of my days in NYC. We ordered ahead and picked it up, and this spot is located up a flight of stairs with basically no seating. I got the lunch combo which came with a small salad, spicy tuna roll, and some nigiri. The quality of the fish was so fresh and flavorful, and all the cuts of nigiri were delicious. I loved the salmon and especially loved the spicy tuna roll - it was so perfect in every way! Even the rice here was the ideal texture and level of seasoned. I wish I could have this every day!

omg i got takeout from here a few days ago and literally cannot stop thinking about this place it's super duper fresh and tender tbh i would not get the ala carte again bc i added on two pieces of negi tuna and it was too chewy and not easy to eat and only 2 small pieces for like $10 extra but the other lunch pack was really good they are also super fast and i saw a bunch of people also ordered the place even though it was a super smal literal hole in the wall place

Amazing experience! The fish was incredibly fresh, and every roll was beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel very welcome. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed -- perfect for both a casual dinner and a special occasion. The menu has a great variety, and everything we tried was delicious. Will definitely be coming back!

For dinner before show, we tried two other viral places. The first was this hard to find sushi spot. It is on the second floor upstairs from the Smoke Shop. Thank you Yelpers who posted pictures of the Smoke Shop because Waze took me to a completely different spot. The stairway and their space is very sketchy (look at pic) but I think that is part of their shtick; high quality sushi in a sketchy location. We ordered ahead on the app and even though I knew it would be sketchy, it was still something to walk up those dingy stairs with a garbage bag sitting at top, turn corner into a barebones stairwell, and pick up order at a McDonald's looking takeout window. But so worth it!! We got the Sushi Premium box and the Toro Toro Roll (what can we say, we love Toro (see Nami Nori review). Cannot really compare toros with NN though because NN torched theirs and also had caviar. But S35 was still very good! Toro in both the negi roll and box were so fatty and yummy! The rest of the sushi pieces were very fresh and tasty!! Very convenient and affordable!! Obviously don't come here for a date night but if you want some convenient alone time with some really good sushi, this is your place!!

Sushi 35 West is truly a hole in the wall as it's on the second floor on top of a cannabis shop- I almost walked by it without realizing it. The sushi is quite tasty though & fresh as well, I tried two basic rolls (the salmon + avocado & the tuna) but next time I have to try their classic toro roll. All in all, I'd go back & order takeout from here for sure or grab a quite bite at the place too (do take note that this place is quite small/not ideal for large groups at all). Enjoy!

Ask the Community - Sushi 35 West

What kind of fish is in the 15 piece nigiri set?

Is this wheelchair accessable? And is there a wheelchair accessible bathroom?

No I don't think so

Do you need to take stairs to get to this place, or do they have an elevator?

Yes, you have to take stairs to get to this tiny take out place. They have a couple small tables in a hallway, but this is primarily a high quality take out place.

It this place allergy friendly for people with shellfish allergy?

It is a hall in a wall sushi place, and they cook in a tiny space. I do not think that this place is not mixing shrimp and other fish on different cooking boards

It's not especially big, so you may have a bit of a wait if you frequent right at lunch or in the evening but whatever amount of time you have to wait it will be well worth it. Service is top tier but you come for the food. They have a varied menu with a lot of options so if you're bringing a buddy that isn't up for Katsu, they'll have plenty to choose from. The Katsu is the star and I think what sets this place apart is that they offer Berkshire pork katsu as an option. Arguably some of the best pork, it's great to have the option if you're looking to heighten the experience. I love their pork katsu and go nuts over the chicken katsu curry. It's super crispy, slightly greasy but never off-putting. And it's served with the most delicate and delicious cabbage slaw. I could eat a mountain of this it's so good. Highly recommended.

Katsu-Hama is about two doors to the Left of Phil's, and has minimal, very discreet signage. I got some tonkatsu...I forget the exact type, but it was essentially the most fatty of the tonkatsu offered. It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

Many of the clientele are Japanese so we knew we were at an authentic place. We got: - Fried oysters: the batter was light and crispy and oysters piping hot - Vinegared Mackerel w/ Ponzu Sauce: fresh & tangy - Intestines Hotpot: comforting & light despite the fattiness of the intestines - Creamed Mentai Udon: they split it in 2 small bowls for us since we were sharing. Udon had a nice bouncy chew and sauce was not heavy We also got a bottle of sake, and they poured it in a beautiful sake decanter to keep it cold. First time seeing cold sake presented this way which was very cool. We tried Suntory draft beer since that was the only draft they had, which was odd since most Japanese places carry Asahi/Sapporo, definitely not as light as the other two beers I'm used to. Even though I was stuffed by the end, I didn't feel lethargic, everything felt light without compromising flavor. I would budget to spend around $100 a person here after tip and tax, if you ignore the prices on the menu and try a variety of things. The tuna from the bone is the most famous dish here, but I was not able to get it as they sell out very fast. But I tried the sashimi and it was high quality -- just that it was not enough food for me. But that makes it more in line with portions back in Japan.
