The Good: We had the Veal Portafoglio (Veal, Mushrooms, Asparagus), and the Chicken Francese. Both were delicious. The staff was attentive, polite, and great at their job. Never waited for water, drinks, food, service, etc. Very nice. The bread was served warm and was really fresh. It's how bread should taste in my opinion and bread that good can be a challenge to find(even in Brooklyn). It came with butter, but I should have asked for extra virgin olive oil. Needs improvement: The salad that came with the meal was a little disappointing as it only contained Iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. That was not on the same level as the rest of the dinner. We had a nice dinner here albeit limited choices for me on the menu. Our server was nice though it would have been nicer of him to tell us that they don't have a particular house red wine and not serve us the most expensive glass they offer :/ Anyway, I ordered a half plate of the mushroom risotto and my bf had the grilled filet of sole. Had the tortoni for dessert (ice cream w/ crushed almonds and a maraschino cherry on top) and a cappuccino. My favorite time of year to go is around Christmas, they display a beautiful gold angel on the wall with wonderful wreaths... it's breathtaking. I hosted an event at Gargiulos Restaurant last weekend. It was a memorial for my brother who passed away suddenly a few months ago and it was a perfect event. The food, service, room and location were all exactly what I was looking for. It was easy to arrange, only 2 phone calls and it was a great value too. The last time I was there was for my brother's 16th birthday around 1975 and it is bigger and more grand but the food is still exceptional. I highly recommend... Everyone that attended was in total agreement that my very picky brother would have approved. THANKS Gargiulo's for helping to make what could have been a somber day much better. We took my dad here on a Saturday night for his birthday. Overall we had an OK experience. Most of the dishes were good, but a little pricey for the location and level of service. We paid restaurant prices for fast food service. The chicken and veal entrees averaged $18.00 and the seafood entrees averaged $22.00. Risotto's averaged $18.00 and the Pasta's averaged $15.00. We shared the Fish salad and the baked clam appetizer which were very good. We also had the hot antipasto which was very good as well. We shared the spaghetti Puttanesca which was very good. We also had the Lasagna; some pieces tasted Metallic and other pieces had no taste. It was not worth eating. We had the shrimp parmigiana, which was good although the sauce was a little bland. We also had The Veal Marsala which was very good especially the Marsala sauce. We also had the Eggplant Rollatini and that was good. The service was mediocre: the waiter was barely there, and we had to look for him when we wanted something, when the dishes were cleared no one removed the crumbs from our tablecloth, and while the other tables had a flower, ours didn't. The wait staff did not pay attention to the details. The wine list was limited. Overall, the food is 4 stars and the service is 2 stars, thereby I gave it 3 stars. read more

I came here a couple weeks ago with some family to meet my great uncle for his birthday. He chose Gargiulo's because he lives in the area and likes coming here. This was my first time here and I wasn't disappointed. We came for lunch around 1 on a Saturday. We were seated right away without reservations cause it was an off hour. It is a fancy and nice restaurant so I can't come in wearing beach clothes. I say this because it is located like on block down from Coney Island. This place is like a hole in the wall joint, but it isn't. It's a catering hall and a restaurant in one. The dining area is very spacious and quite elegant. You are expected to come in dressed nicely with the pants only rule in play. The food was priced just like other italian restaurants to my surprise. The food is the same as any other mediocre Italian restaurant. 3 of the orders were forgotten had to ask twice for others. Going here is always an event for my family, even though it's frequent. Old-school charm with updated style; there is no other restaurant like it. My review is based on service not the food... My office was having an event at the Cyclones Stadium and needed a cake to celebrate a special occasion. I am so disappointed in the fact that there are NO Italian bakeries left in Coney Island (I'm originally from CI and there were at least 2 when I left in 2001). I called the restaurant a few days ago to see if they would be able to accommodate 20 of us for my dads 70 th birthday the woman was very polite and told me someone would get back to me shortly. Later that evening i received a call from Anthony who i think is one of the owners and he said he would be able to accommodate us . I am Italian-American and originally from this neighborhood. In the 35 years I have lived in Manhattan, lots has changed, but not Gargiulo's. It typifies PERFECT Italian-American food. Recommendations: all red sauce pastas, baked clams, veal, antipastos - any old school southern Italian items are great. Nice service at the bar. However, my food was awful. My pasta was supposed to be artichoke with prosciutto. There wasn't a scrap of prosciuotto in it and the manager was telling me that there was. My wife had spaghetti sorrentino and I had chicken parmigiana. Mine was average and the portion was about average, if that. My wife thought that her portion could also have been larger. I read other yelp reviews AFTER dining there and regret that I ordered the poultry. It seems like Gargiulo's specializes in seafood. I could have had this same dish for a third less money at many places in Brooklyn. Everything else about this place was flawless. Been in business since 1907 and under the same ownership for about fifty years. They had a huge dining room done very tastefully. We don't drive in New York, but if we did, they have endless parking and valet service. The waiter was as nice as can be. Every time I needed something, he was there to serve. Some of the most delicious and authentic Italian food in Brooklyn. My favorite is the shrimp risotto, fried calamari and the baked clams but I have tried many a dishes and have loved them all! The dining hall has been redone and modernized making it a great spot for a dinner, a date night out or a small celebration with family and friends. I will be having my wedding reception in their reception hall in back of the restaurant here next year and can't wait! The cocktail room and reception rooms are spacious and gorgeous. The menu options are plentiful and I am confident the food and drink will be amongst the best part of our wedding. We have been there a few times and had my daughters sweet 16 party there. I remember that the food was great, the service, superb and atmosphere fabulous. Well,15 years have gone by and her boyfriend wanted to say "Will you marry me?" in a special place. I suggested he speak to Nino, and set it up. Nino did everything possible to make this a memorable dinner for our families. And it was. Again, food was exceptional, delicious Italian food cooked to order, service surpassed by no other, and a family type atmosphere when he popped the question. I rarely take to yelp to review a restaurant, but I have never felt so awkward or out of place in an establishment in all of my life. I wish I read the reviews prior to going inside. My sister and I were walking along the street and were lured by the pretty outdoor seating and pizza being made outdoors. It was quickly apparent that the hostess did not want to seat us and asked if we had reservations for a nearly empty seating area. After reading some of the reviews, perhaps this was for our attire (which while beach ready, was not sloppy). It also took an excessive amount of time to get served and it seemed as if no one actually wanted to serve us in general. It's apparent a certain crowd frequents this space, and while that is fine for those chosen few, I felt none of that hospitality. I find it interesting that a large number of reviewers feel this negative vibe from this restaurant and perhaps that is something that needs to be addressed. I'm disappointed because this could have been a great place to go while visiting Coney Island (which I do ever summer), but this will be a hard pass from me! read more

We had a very early dinner at Gargiulos and I can tell you that the service by Angelo was very enjoyable, fast, and humorous. He has a great personality and you feel like you have known him for years. The appetizers were great, baked clams and a Ceasar salad,but the dinners were even better. My wife had the 3lb. lobster, broiled,that she described as to be very juicy, and tender, grilled to perfection! I had my favorite, Chicken Scarpariello on the bone with sausage, potatoes, cherry peppers. All I can say is My complements to the chef. For desert try the Tiramisu, it's fantastic. My wife was never a fan of the dessert, but today she couldn't put her fork down. Maybe next time she'll order her own and leave mine alone! Job well done! read more

This evening was so disappointing. I know I know this is a childhood staple. Back in the day the, creme of the creme if you will. However, times have changed and apparently this place has too. Food was terrible. They couldn't even get my stuffed artichoke right. It was basically raw. Breadcrumbs probably thrown on right out of the Progresso container before it was delivered to my table. The leaves were no better. Texture was uncooked. My veal chop lacked flavor and was served alone on a huge plate with no sense of presentation. Oh I happened to forget it was accompanied by a cold potato croquette which looked so out of place. Resembled a tater tot. The hot appetizer was far from appetizing. This place has not remained consistent with the quality of their food, but you know what has , their prices. Just not worth paying those prices for this quality. I do hate to see places like these disappear from Brooklyn, but YTD this place doesn't serve anything other than a good memory. Their dining room was decorated beautifully. The service was okay. What a great "old" style Italian restaurant in the heart of Coney Island. Service is superb, food is excellent. & there is a parking lot across the street. We ordered Fettuccini Alfredo which was excellent and the Italian standard Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti, which was prepared exactly the way I wanted it. I took my wife to Gargiulo's for Valentines Day and what a marvelous time we had together. As always, the staff performed their task perfectly and with cheer. The ambiance was perfect for such an occasion including live music which was appropriate, engaging, and talented. My wife and I were both pleased with our experience even before the food arrived. Speaking of food, the seafood here is incredibly delicious. I took photos of our dishes but they do not give justice to the presentation, aroma, and palette enchanting experience my wife and I had that evening. this man that is supposed to own this business has manners of a pig, yes a pig, his eggplant par looked like it was made 4-7 years ago, first time the waitor brought out the bread it was toasted, i never saw toasted bread in a supposed italian restaurant, the next time the bread was still frozen, now the 3rd tijme it was ok, bad bread but ok...the food was swimming in some kind of oil, like swimming in oil, then he gets nasty and tells us others ate the epp plant parm,,,,well i doubt it for i never saw eggplant parm that was brown in color burned some kind of cheese and no taste,,,,,i sent everything back so did the other ladies,,,,,then i posted on this web page about this supposed italian restaurant that is crap, yes crap..i had to sellect a 1 star to post this review but it is a minus 1 for me read more

Haven't been here in a while and I can see that I wasn't missing anything. Came here on a Saturday night in a party of 6. First they try to mug you of your coats to be checked in at the coat check. Why? To make money. That's not even the problem. We didn't want to cause I had things in my coat pockets that I didn't want to start taking out and my wife was still cold and wanted to keep her coat with her. They look at you like you're weird. I see this coat check is a thing at even other restaurants. Some places lease their coat check booth out to independent people who have to pay rent to the establishment. Therefore, they are aggressively hounding you for your coats for a fee. We ordered appetizers to start. Baked clams, were ok, nothing to brag about, the mixed hot antipasta, stuffed artichoke, and the mozzarella with prosciutto and roasted peppers. I've had better food at a local pizzeria. I ordered a filet mignon but was brought a rib steak that was horrible. Hard to digest. My wife had a veal chop which she said was awful. With our dishes they brought a potato croquet, that was cold on both plates. How or why would they do this is beyond me. Perhaps no oversight in the kitchen. This place has been here a long time and I wish I can say better things about it because it is family run, which I like. But in being truthful, I won't be coming back here again. I have so many fond memories of this restaurant. Gargiulo's has always been cavernous. It was built to match the out-sized personality of the original Coney Island as it opened in 1907. I miss the giant octopus that adorned/clung to the ceiling but the over-friendly staff is still in tact. I used to always smother my cheese tortellini in grated cheese when I was a kid but now I enjoy the baked clams and the fried calamari immensely. It may not be the hip place it used to be but they still try to be really classy and have a dress code. The last time i was here I had a mahi mahi special and it was delicious. I've never had a bad meal there, I've had long waits, but a place so rich with history and paintings and photos gives you plenty to soak up while you wait to be seated or wait for your food. read more
