I traveled the hour and a half back on Wednesday and was greeted warmly by Roman and his staff. After coming here to Royal Seafood, I can confirm that person was correct. Hidden in a little corner shop of Brooklyn, Royal seafood doesn't look like anything flashy. It's a small, hole-in-the wall grocery store focused on foods from Russia. Their most notably food is caviar. The front display case had mostly cured salmon eggs, which varying grades of fish egg depending on what you want to pay for (and from which company). They also have various preparations of smoked salmon and other fish. If you want real sturgeon caviar, you can ask for it by the cashier's counter. They can weigh it out individually for you if you want want to buy a whole can. While it's still expensive, it's the real deal and probably cheaper than other places that sell caviar. Overall, it's a cool hidden gem that any caviar lover should not miss.

So I gathered my courage and stepped through the doors and boy am I glad I did. As you walk inside, you immediately notice the long stainless steel counter where a man stands expertly filleting something as though it's no big deal. On either side of the room, large cases full of ice reveal a plethora of sea creatures. Salmon, Tuna, Octopus, Scallops...Conch. Yes, conch. It's exotic. It's exciting. It makes me want to learn to be a better cook. The first time I came in, an Italian-accented fellow in front of me was buying up calamari, scallops, and shrimp. I immediately pictured a delicious seafood risotto and my mouth started to water. I wasn't that ambitious myself, but walked out of there with a decent sized salmon steak ($7.99/pound the day I went) that took me two days to eat. (Not that this is necessarily desirable with seafood, next time I'll buy a smaller portion). My next trip in I opted for a tuna steak ($11.99/pound). Both times, it was delicious. I'll never want for seafood again. Except for the fact that I'm supposedly cutting my food budget back.
