Roman was extremely friendly and helpful when I bought black caviar here. He offers samples and the…read moreproduct is good and the price is dirt cheap, almost literally unbelievable. How can he offer such a low price? 1. Instead of being a "specialty foods" shop, this is just a shop for the local post-Soviet community. They eat lots of caviar and fish products, so he has higher volume compared to a high end grocery in a fashionable area. It's more of a normal product than a rare specialty. 2. Because he has high volume, he can buy a wholesale tub of black caviar and sell it before it spoils. By comparison, most places sell small vacuum packed portions in metal tins. This approach spares the cost of laying an intermediary for tinning and apportioning. 3. The caviar is unbranded, so there is less marketing cost baked in and no prestige premium. Instead, his reputation among his local customers serves to give comfort that his product is good. So it is no-frills but a fantastic deal. In my case, hackleback (American sturgeon) caviar was sold at $220 a pound. Note that at a specialty shop in Manhattan you can find hackleback for up to $70 an OUNCE. The product was delicious and all my guests were extremely pleased. Even picky eaters who had never tried caviar kept coming back for more. I will say, though the product was fresh and very flavorful, it did not have a perfect "pop." There were pops on many eggs (not all), but the popping was a little lackluster if still present. Small price to pay in my opinion. Roman's shop is an hour away from me by subway, but after my experience, I can't imagine buying caviar anywhere else in the city!

I was bemoaning the lack of seafood in my neighborhood recently, when someone called me out on it…read moreand reminded me that this place exists. So I gathered my courage and stepped through the doors and boy am I glad I did. As you walk inside, you immediately notice the long stainless steel counter where a man stands expertly filleting something as though it's no big deal. On either side of the room, large cases full of ice reveal a plethora of sea creatures. Salmon, Tuna, Octopus, Scallops...Conch. Yes, conch. It's exotic. It's exciting. It makes me want to learn to be a better cook. The first time I came in, an Italian-accented fellow in front of me was buying up calamari, scallops, and shrimp. I immediately pictured a delicious seafood risotto and my mouth started to water. I wasn't that ambitious myself, but walked out of there with a decent sized salmon steak ($7.99/pound the day I went) that took me two days to eat. (Not that this is necessarily desirable with seafood, next time I'll buy a smaller portion). My next trip in I opted for a tuna steak ($11.99/pound). Both times, it was delicious. I'll never want for seafood again. Except for the fact that I'm supposedly cutting my food budget back.

BK Seafood Market was a refreshing find in Bay Ridge. We came for dinner with my wife, parents, and…read moresiblings and ordered a big family-style spread of more than 10 dishes. We had stir-fried snails, jellyfish, Dungeness crab, live steamed fish, braised eggplant with fish fillet, stir-fried cauliflower with preserved meats, coral shrimp, sliced conch with crispy tofu, beef with string beans, seasonal vegetables, and fish maw soup. Everything came out hot, delicious, and well seasoned. The Dungeness crab was a standout, and it was refreshing to enjoy such a wide variety of seafood and traditional dishes. My wife was pleasantly surprised by the entire meal. The interior was nicely done and felt different from many other Chinese restaurants in Brooklyn. Service was attentive, and they seated us in a corner where we could enjoy our family conversation without constant interruption. The food came out very quickly, maybe a little too quickly, but we were fine with it. They were unfortunately out of a few fish and clam options, as well as several wines, but it did not take away from a great dinner. Highly recommended for a family-style Chinese seafood meal in Bay Ridge.

My favorite was their chicken, eggplant and salted fish claypot dish. It's one of my favorite dishes in general and they made it very well. Definitely will come here more often and will rec my family to try this place out for our next family event.

I have been around seafood my entire life and as a food professional it is gratifying to find a family run shop that cares about freshness. Really fresh seafood should smell clean, mild, and reminiscent of the open ocean, completely lacking the pungent, heavy smell that people typically associate with "fishiness". Avenue U Fish Market is clean and creamy smelling, just like right out of the water fresh. I bought soft-shell crabs last weekend that were the best I have ever had in my 60 years. They were lively, plump and most importantly delicious. Angelo personally picked 4 of them for me and my wife. I wanted to let Brooklyn and Rockaway know that it is worth the trip to Avenue U Fish Market. Keep up the great work and shop local. Support a small family run business. Get the Soft Shells while they are available. Thank you Angelo, Adam Smith
