I came here for a large family gathering and we had their party menu. The meal started off strong with fresh bruschetta and tasty bread and butter. Appetizers included fried calamari, steamed mussels, stuffed mushrooms, and a house salad. Everything could've been seasoned more; fortunately, there are salt and pepper shakers set out on each table just for that. The calamari was served with a big bowl of marinara on the side. The calamari were lightly breaded and lightly fried; they were nicely cooked but I would've liked them to be more golden brown. The mussels were nice and plump, but some of the shells were already empty. I did enjoy the cheesy stuffed mushrooms. The salad was a bit overdressed for my tastes, and the veggies were wilted as a result. For entrees, we had a choice of the veal scaloppini, chicken francese, grilled salmon, or eggplant Parmesan. I went with the chicken francese (two chicken cutlets in a lemon sauce), which was disappointing for me. Perhaps with catering to the large party, the kitchen was overwhelmed and quality was sacrificed, because the chicken was soggy on the outside but dry on the inside. Veggies and arancini were served with the entrees, family-style. The arancini looked appetizing, and I enjoyed the light crisp texture of the exterior crust, but ultimately it was a miss because the interior was completely lacking in flavor. We ended the meal with cake and coffee. The cake was ultra moist and had two layers of cream - one chocolate and one vanilla - something for everyone. Service was one of the highlights. The staff worked diligently and the table was elegantly set to provide a nice ambiance. There was also piano music playing in the background which was a nice touch. For hosting a large party, they set up two long tables for everyone to be seated at. This set the tone for an enjoyable, truly family-style meal. I had a marvelous early dinner here. We came right on time when the waiter starts setting up the tables for outside dining. Our waiter came out with warm bread and bruschetta immediately! Yum It was a quick bite so we ordered calamari and pasta. I had the Spaghetti alla Salvi which is served with shrimp and sun dried tomatoes. It was very delicious and appetizing! With fresh Parmesan :) The calamari was also great served with marinara sauce. Our waiter, Manny was more than accommodating and fixed up a lime margarita for me. We were getting acquainted in both English and a little español (I'm a little rough) LOL For dessert, I tried tartufo. Chocolate on the outside, ice cream and cherry on the inside. It wasn't too sweet and definitely can be shared, especially after a filling pasta lunch/dinner! The tables are set nicely and the ambiance is welcoming with some light music in the background. This business has hand sanitizers on each table including the ones that were empty, awaiting guests. I love this virus prevention initiative. read more

First off from reading the reviews I had a pretty good idea of what to expect but I wanted to give this neighborhood gem a shot for myself. Today we were celebrating our 1 year anniversary of homeownership so I made reservations for us. Once getting there I had feeling if we didn't have reservations they would have been an issue tho there were many empty seats. All is well they took our orders, not once offer the special. I didn't judge since it was my first time there. Then not much for drink selections so I ordered wine which came in a small glass. That was fine that was fine. I rocked out anyway. When our food came, I ordered the pepper flakes on the side that never came and our server never came back to the table to see if our order came out. OK if everything is fine if we need anything, my glass was pretty much empty. No one asked if I needed another drink. so we're sitting in there my glasses empty everybody's finished eating. Nobody's coming up to access if you wanted another drink if you need a dessert nothing I'm only sitting there watching all the regulars approach and ingredients very well table next to us they came they read off all today's special and I'm like Humm interesting. Then I act like three or four times for my bill so we literally sat for 30 minutes without a bill. The only thing I enjoyed about this experience is the person that came to our table to play that musical equipment. I don't know the name of the equipment, but he played beautifully And I tipped him. He's the only one in that establishment that deserved a tip. so I am all for supporting everything in my neighborhood, but I must say this was extremely disappointing and then to top things off when the server came with the bill he says oh are you upset? The waiter said that you were upset I guess my face was he said it all that's his guilty conscience. I was so happy to return day with my mother-in-law but now I don't even think I even wanna waste my time. They don't need new customers they have their regulars. My two stars is for the food that's about it and maybe the ambience one for food one for ambience service absolutely sucks disgusting.... keep in mind. I really can't kick, scream, and cry about my overall experience at this place - especially since it served as a last resort on Christmas Eve, but I can definitely b!tch a little bit. One word: WHERE'S MY FOOD?! YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO KILL IT! Okay, so that was more than one word. But that was my biggest gripe with this place; the horrendously lonnnngg wait in between courses AND how incredibly short staffed they were. You know you have a red flag waving when the host comes out with your drink orders. The place was packed, but c'mon - hire more people if you need them! It got worse when I overheard some of our neighboring tables complain about how their order was placed before ours and glare over once we got our food. We asked for everything - water, more napkins, more water, where my sister's order went, the check - it got last Merry and more Grinchy by the time we left. We ordered much; we laughed more; we ate with gusto, and we left almost too tired to think about midnight mass. Salvi - HIRE MORE PEOPLE!!! I went to Salvi's last night for a girls dinner with my mom, sister, cousin, and aunt. This restaurant was our go-to place for celebrations, date nights, or really anytime we wanted a great Italian dinner when we all lived in the area. It's been a few years but as soon as we walked in the door we were treated like family members returning home. The food was great and the service was excellent. Their bruschetta and fresh bread are always outstanding. The linguine with white clam sauce was always my go to and it was even better than I remembered. We shared so many laughs and memories, and the feelings of nostalgia rounded out our wonderful experience. We all agreed to return more often. Thank you to the staff for a magical evening! read more

This restaurant has seen better days. It's an old school Italian place in Marine Park Brooklyn. The best things we tasted were the brushetta house appetizer and two salads . We were charged for soft drinks that came in 6oz glasses, so we went thru them quickly. The pasta fagoli was heavy on the pasta and light on the fagoli although the broth had some flavor. The pappardelle with mushrooms had a 9:1 ratio of pasta to mushrooms. The vegetable pasta was the same. Filet of sole with capers was pleasant and tasty. The service was attentive, but I had to reach for my nitro glycerin when the total bill with tip came to $184 for all these carbs. read more

We tried Salvi's for the first time for a family birthday dinner and had the order delivered. From start to finish the meal was subpar. Both steak dishes came significantly more well done than ordered and the meat was not flavorful at all. The Chicken Francaise sauce was watery. The potatoes were boring and tasteless. The vegetables were boring. The baked clams were good and my husband enjoyed his Zuppa di Pesce, but he was the only one who enjoyed the meal. The prices were high, esp. with the food being mediocre. Luckily, there are other good Italian restaurants nearby because we will never order from here again. read more

Went to Salvi to celebrate a friend's BD. There were 9 of us. Started with appetizers of calamari- not chewy, but not very much taste- mixed plate of shrimp, fried zucchini, stuffed mushrooms and stuffed something. Never really figured out what it was. All were ok, but again, not exceptionally tasty. Entrees included rack of lamb, fish and pork chops. Those who had the lamb seemed very satisfied, as were the fish eaters, but I had the pork chop and not great. Although the size of the chops was not overwhelming as many pork chop servings can be, the chop itself was dry. It needed some type of sauce or something. The accompanying vegetables were good. We ended with desserts of cannoli, tartufo and cheese cake and coffee. All were good. The drinks were done well. Service was fine but could have used some more interaction as to description of choices. All in all, the meal was acceptable but not memorable. read more

I've been to Salvi many times over the past couple of decades. The food has always been consistently good, and the service fantastic. Salvi has that "Old School" style and charm: white table clothes, mirrors, nicely suited waiters, Sinatra playing in the background, and offerings that evoke the image of first generation Italians whipping up a storm in the kitchen. Very comfortable. Prices? Not too bad. My only caveat (which is why I gave them 4 stars instead of five) is that I wonder if they have recently changed chefs. I was last there over the summer, and the food seemed to have slipped a notch. Still good, but clearly not up to par. Maybe it was the chefs night off. I've been coming here for ]20 years, since I was a kid. I have NEVER, repeat NEVER had a bad meal here. I bring my friends as well, and they too enjoy it. I get the same dish every time. Caesar Salad Chicken Parm Side order of Pasta Bolognese Chocolate Cake. The staff there is top notch - attentive - water glasses NEVER remain empty for more than a minute. They really care about you and that's rare in the fast pace of food industry. You can tell the chef cares about what goes on the plate - and that's important too! There are many italian restaurants in Brooklyn, and I still highly recommend Salvi. There are only two that I genuinely enjoy eating at for a fine dining experience, and Salvi is #1. Much better than average Italian food (more Italian than Italian American), a very pleasant atmosphere with great service and an excellent piano player. This restaurant is a real gem. We were quickly seated, served warm bread, and asked for our drink order. The seating is formal, yet the atmosphere is warm and friendly. There were four of us, my cousin, myself, and our husbands. We were celebrating my cousin and my birthdays. The bruschetta was a perfect start, light and flavorful, and not about to compete with the main course. My cousin ordered the filet mignon, a favorite of hers at this restaurant, and clearly enjoyed it. Our husbands each had the rack of lamb that was on special that evening. Both were singing their praises and members of "the clean plate club". I ordered Farfalle with Salmon in a pink sauce. It was delicious. We were having such a good time we went on to cappuccino and aperitifs. All told a delightful evening. The food was excellent, the service was caring and prompt and the atmosphere pleasant. This is what we ordered: -ceasar salad - drowned in heavy dressing -special of the evening - branzini with clams - fish was SO bland, I got exactly 5 oysters and the side dish? a sad plate of steamed veggies which was tasteless and gross -hubby ordered the fluke which was similarly bland and tasteless -homemade cheesecake? - was not a big fan at all. It was lumpy and weird. -EXPENSIVE!!!!!! Why are they charging $25 - 30 per entree? Ugh This is NOT Manhattan or even park slope. I don't know what people are thinking rating this place so high, I was utterly disappointed and will never ever recommend or dine at this establishment ever again. Disgraceful Italian....take y our business elsewhere. If you think I'm over exaggerating then go to Gino's in Bay ridge and come back to me. Our family goes there every New Year's Eve for the last sitting, the party where we eat good food and have a "classy" blast. We also go a few times during the year. The host will bring your drinks because it's family owned and he's showing how much he values you as a customer. So, throw out all your preconceived ideas about how a restaurant should be. On New Year's Eve I met the owner's daughter-in-law in the ladies room and we started talking, after we walked out...still talking...I admired her sequined dress (vintage and gorgeous on her) and she told me her daughter hated it. Then she hugged me and wished me a "Happy New Year." Also I can't believe anyone is screaming about service at an Italian Brooklyn restaurant on Christmas Eve! Of course there would be a looooong wait. I don't know the owners and we only eat there about three times a year, but I'll bet the let most of their staff off on Christmas Eve and the family was serving you. When Jaclyn says there should be a "red flag" because the host served them drinks. That's a clue that they did let staff off, but the host is an owner, I believe. I'm glad you enjoyed the food. It's' great isn't it. But why would you expect full staff on Christmas Eve? I would go here for dinner anytime, bring out of town friends, and go for that special occasion. read more

I just read other reviews complaining about the wait for service. Of course there is a wait as everything is cooked to order. They are very accommodating and will improvise and cook to your request. Very mediocre Italian food. The mozzarella and tomatoe was served ice cold. A simple dish like Chicken Francese was tasteless and dry. The owners sat 24 of us and knew we had 1.5 hours to eat dinner and had to be back in a funeral home by 7. At 7:05 the desert was not on the table. Since it was my sisters funeral we told the owner we had to leave. The time had been clearly told to them before the reservation was made. We were brought the bill which had the charges for the desert for 24 of us which was never sold. The owner refused to take any money off the bill for the desert we paid for. Their response was they could get the desert on the table in five minutes. Did they expect us to bring it to the funeral? What kind of establishment does this to their customers? My parents live in Marine Park and often when my husband and I visit them we eat at Salvi's. There are a number of reasons we go back: 1. we really like the food. It is classic Italian American a notch above the rest; we're never disappointed, 2. the owner and staff are extremely kind, 3. the decor and atmosphere are very nice - special without being stuffy, 4. they have a wonderful pianist who plays on weekends (but not so loudly that we can't easily hold a conversation), and 5. the prices are absolutely fair. My girlfriends and I went to Salvi Friday night, and we loved everything from the warm bread - to - the homemade cheesecake!!!! As soon as we arrived we were greeted by a handsome Italian gentleman, and brought to a comfortable table. The table was set in crisp, white linens, and the dishes warm. I had a great Sunday night dinner here with my family. It is a classic white tablecloth, old-school, Italian-American spot. You're not going to find avant-garde cuisine here but instead well-executed classics. Perfect place to bring older children for a special treat or Grandma & Grampa, or maybe a bit later in the evening for a date night with the wife. On Sunday we found the service and the food to be outstanding. One of us had the rack of lamb special, another had a pasta with meat sauce special, and a third had the Spaghetti Alla Salvi (with shrimp) off the regular menu. The portions were fairly large but we still ate everything. The service was professional and everyone there was friendly, we ended up chatting with the table next to us.
