How the mighty have fallen. Went there this evening for a Mother's Day dinner. It couldn't have been worse. We had a reservation and was still made to wait twenty minutes to be seated despite available tables. We didn't see the first waiter for at least another twenty minutes. A price fixed, somewhat limited menu. Most of us had the pasta and chicken cutlet parmigiana. Came with a 'salad' and potato croquette. We had our pasta after a wait and then...nothing. We got to talking and remembered we were to receive a salad. We hoped it wouldn't come with our entree. It didn't. What we did get was some soft lettuce with olive oil drizzled on it. Pitiful. Our chicken cutlet was a patty and tasted like chicken fingers with a little mozzarella and tomato sauce to hide this fact. Not one of us was able to finish our meal. Not one! I wanted to take the included dessert to go but was voted against. We shouldn't have taken it at all. We ended up being one of the last tables to leave and were being stared down by the bus boys and other waiters. Not our waiter though. We never saw him. The ONLY reason we were among the last to go was because we were always left waiting. The valet was kept waiting as well. Our cars were the last in the lot. I had to retrieve my coat from the coat room as there wasn't an attendant. My son complained to the owner who introduced himself as Anthony. He stated he farms out the work for busy nights like Mother!s Day and that he didn't know what to do. Didn't know what to do? You're the owner, pride yourself for being in business for your be hundred years and you don't know what to do? I know what to do. We won't be back, we won't recommend the place ever again, I'll tell people about my experience, and write this negative review. Sorry for giving it one star. Zero stars wasn't an option. read more

I really enjoyed my meal at this restaurant and hope to return for my next trip to NY as I live in Las Vegas. Our waiters name was Emilio. He was very attentive and kind and took several pictures for us then I didn't catch his name one of the owners spoke to us and was also very nice and I told him we were celebrating my daughter's graduation and that I don't live here and where I live and he gave us a limoncello to celebrate which was really nice and the food was excellent. A few minutes later another one of the I believe he was an Owner also walked by and greeted us as well. I posted some photos below and I will definitely return on my next trip to New York and highly recommend this restaurant. The red sauce is really good. Food was disgusting!!!! Came here for an award ceremony dinner for my son's football league. The salad on the table was subpar, it looked like the olives and string beans were served out of a can. The chicken parm had absolutely no seasoning on it, it tasted like they transferred the chicken breast straight out of the freezer, to the plain unseasoned breadcrumbs and into the oven. Came here to celebrate my birthday a couple of weeks ago. Service was a little odd. The waiter kind of stood over us while we looked at the menus. I asked to see the cocktail list and he asked if I wanted him to recite it for me which I guess is nice? Idk I need to read things. The food was ok. A perfect meeting place when you are coming from Central Jersey and your friends are in Long Island and Brooklyn. Not much has changed here over the years, except no octopus hanging from the ceiling, and I say that in a positive way. Excellent service and the food is still all of the old school favorites. I made an early reservation before a baseball game trying to support a restaurant we have long gone to as a family. Upon walking in, we were ignored and then a waiter looked at my teenage kids in disgust because he said they were wearing gym shorts. I get it, these are your rules, but the way I was spoken to and waved off by a waiter was absolutely disgusting. There is a way to handle things like a gentleman. This will be the last time anyone from my family sets foot in this dying establishment. Went to Gargiulo's for the first time ever last night before heading down to the boardwalk for the fireworks. A sharp-dressed fellow was manning the door and opened it with a flourish. My friend was already at the bar and had asked George (the bartender) to make me a slightly dirty martini with "fancy gin." He made me the most glorious martini with Empress (it's purple!). A woman at the next table ordered one after she saw mine! And it was only $12! The same martini in the City would easily be $18-$20. We were a party of 3 and shared a Caesar, plus each got a separate pasta half-order. Plenty of food! I got the spaghettini with garlic and oil. Huge slabs of yummy garlic and the perfect portion. Friends got the rigatoni with meat sauce and the linguini with clams. Classics, all of them. The interior is elegant and it felt like we had time-traveled with the tuxedoed waiters and the terrazzo floor. And everyone who works here is so kind and witty. read more

The confusing menu items also have no explanation of what you are about to be served. Even though the portions are generous, the taste and value of the food weakens after the first few bites. They do have a gimmick where if they pick your number out of a container then your meal is free. I was here with my mother and we did not get the free meal. Unfortunately, I can not explain how this once Coney Island institution went from having excellent food to just fair food. read more

We were looking for a small function room for a birthday party in Brooklyn, and came upon Gargiulo's, a throwback to a different era, decorated in dark woods and staffed by tuxedo clad waiters. According to their website, Gargiulo's Restaurant was established in 1907 by the Gargiulo family, and was an entertainment venue throughout the heyday of Coney Island. In April 1965, the Russo brothers acquired the restaurant, kept the name and implemented their Neopolitan hospitality and cuisine. We chose the Board Room, a small event room which holds up to 25 people. We thought the room looked great, the service was excellent, and most of the food quite good. A gourmet restaurant? Not so much. An iconic spot for a good meal, certainly. We sampled: Prosciutto, Mozzarella & Roasted Peppers $14.50 Shrimp Cocktail $14.00 Fried Zucchini $10.00 Tre Colore Salad (Arugula, Endive & Radicchio) $10.50 Caesar Salad $11.00 And many entrees. Most of what we sampled was quite good, the Zucchini was tasty but a little soggy. And the Shrimp Cocktail was good, though the shrimp were a little on the shrimpy size! Old school is the game here. I was waiting on line to go to a Cyclones game with my cousin and we both said how we never at here despite it being legendary, so about half way through the game (Seinfeld night) we gave in to hunger (Cyclones park has pretty bad food) and headed over to Gariulos. It was a saturday night around 8 and we had no reservsations but were seated after a very short wait. Being an adult I wear long pants when going to eat in a nice restaurant so there was no issues with dress code which personally i think more restaurants should have. Put a damn pair of pants on people. The service was great and we were quickly given a basket of bread and bread sticks and our water glasses were frequently filled. the decor is really nice. The place is huge. For starters we split an order of baked clams and a seafood salad. The clams were quite good, lots of flavor in the bread crumbs and the clams were plump and tasty without all that excess oil that some places put it in. The seafood salad was bright and lemony and perfect for a muggy August night. For my main I had Chicken Scarpariello. Now my only qualm with the whole dinner was this dish is Chicken (usually on the bone but i went boneless) with sausage,potatoes and hot peppers in a vinegar based sauce. So the waiter asked if i wanted the sausage,potatoes and peppers i was a bit confused and just figured that maybe most of the diners were not Italian and didnt know this. Well when the bill came i saw i was upcharged for all of those things bringing my 24 dollar dish up to about 35. My cousin who had Braciola was asked if he wanted the pasta and also got upcharged. I likely wouldve added all the things anyway but to upcharge for ingredients already supposed to be in the dish in the dish I felt was a bit uncool. The dish however was delicious, spicy and vinegary and garlicky. Another cool touch is the waiter comes at the end and tells you to pick a number between 1-99 and shakes a big shaker full of numbered tiles and picks one out. If you guess right the meal is free (I did not lol) but I liked that. Overall the food was good and thats the main thing even if I wasnt crazy about the upcharges. That was only thing keeping them from the 5th star. read more

I don't know why this restaurant is rated as high as it is because to me the food was a disservice to Italian food. Having been to Italy and experienced an "authentic" experience, the pasta, sauce, and bread service were mid. I ordered the Fettuccine Gargiulo and regretted it upon first bite. Bland, no salt, hospital chicken, ugly, and a complete disgrace to pasta. It was not homemade pasta which is what I would expect in an authentic experience. This beautiful, historic restaurant feels like a step back in time but in the best way possible. The service is attentive, the decor elegant, and the food is everything you'd expect from an old school Italian restaurant in New York. I had the veal special, and it was very flavorful. We also ordered an eggplant appetizer which was good but lacking a bit on seasoning. The Caesar salads were very basic, but passable. Dessert was really nice and the presentation on the sorbets are worth the price. Cannoli was delicious! For the seafood pasta, it was supposed to be "Risotto Pescatore", but I asked the server to make it with angel hair and it was so amazing!!! The eggplant parm was served lasagna style and my fiancé loved it! The atmosphere is great, service was amazing, food absolutely killed it! When we asked for the check, the server asked us to pick a and, after shaking a box of numbers, if it matched, we would only have to pay for drinks, the meal is on them. Went here for Mother's Day dinner . The place is beautiful but that's pretty much it . The service was non existent from entrance . No host at the stand . When someone finally noticed us we were obviously sat . Not sure if anyone had informed the server in our section that they had a new table but it took forever for said server to stop by our table to even get a drink order . What was more perplexing was that there were a handful of staff on the floor but yet zero table presence. The drinks were were not good and honestly the food , oh my goodness the food was so sad and flavorless. I know this place is an institution but my goodness i would be embarrassed to run this restaurant and more so be a chef here . My local pizzeria executes more efficiently. My bill was $300 with tip ( and i tipped over 20%) . I just can't understand what was going on. We were dressed appropriately. I feel that we were kind and not demanding. Got turned away even though I was wearing dress shirt in my short. Restaurants almost empty but still picky over customer dress attire. Not sure it's the best idea to run business in 2022. The restaurant should consider be more relaxed in the dress code attire and the security guard should be nicer on turning people away. He was very rude and should consider other job. What a fantastic evening we had! Outdoor seating was plentiful and there was more than enough social distancing space between tables. The servers sanitized each table between guests and also set up new linens. They were really doing as much as possible to make you feel comfortable. The food was outstanding! Each dish was delicious. The calamari racanati is hands down the best calamari I have ever tasted; an oreganata style preparation that is so flavorful and fresh. I'm not even a fish eater and I would order this every single time. The chicken braccioliettine was a perfect portion and the side of potato croquette and giardiniera roasted vegetables was enough for two people to share. My husband had fettuccine alfredo that was delicious and he devoured it before I could even take a photo. Desserts were excellent as well, tiramisu and a cannoli that were so fresh and tasty. We cannot wait to return, and we would absolutely eat outside again even if it wasn't necessary due to Covid. The outdoor area was beautiful and there was such a refreshing breeze from the beach.
