I went for lunch recently and I was not impressed. Aside from the service and holiday decor, I was extremely underwhelmed. I had the chicken parm, which could have easily been mistaken for a microwave meal. The only good thing about the dish was the sauce. The chicken was soggy and dry. The cheese was rubbery. For $25, I did not think that it was worth the small portion. Other people at my table enjoyed their meals, but unless you are celebrating a special occasion, I would not go to this institution regularly. If you are looking for a spot in a good location with good service, I would go here. read more

Gargiulo's Restaurant is a remnant of days gone by in Brooklyn. It survives because the Russo family owns the property, and because it has a catering facility that pays the bills. I'll start with the positive's first. The dining room is very handsome, and there is a large parking lot. The kitchen at Gargiulo's is unfortunately stuck in second gear. We ordered a Meat and Cheese Antipasto. The Tomato's were not ripe, and the Mozzarella was second rate. Our Fried Calamari was over salted and greasy. The Red Snapper special with fresh Tomato was pretty good, but our Steak was tough and full of fat. We ordered Cannoli's for dessert, but they were nothing special. This is a beautiful Italian restaurant with wonderful service. The bread basket came with several choices of fresh baked bread, sesame breadsticks & crackers. I enjoyed the Linguine Verdi with chicken & mushroom. So flavorful, not soupy or dry, just perfect. My son enjoyed the ravioli, the sauce was just right, not tangy & the noodles not starchy. My fiancé had the Spaghetti Sorrentina & he really savored the 3 meats: filet mignon, prosciutto, & chicken. A must for visiting Coney Island. Came here for a private party and they did a fantastic job! Truly a classy place. The bread and fried calamari were perfect. We were truly blown away by our pasta course! The service was very attentive without being on top of us - sign that they're experienced. However the place is coasting on its past reputation as a venerable red-sauce Italian restaurant. I hadn't been there in decades and found the food middle of the road. The shrimp fra diovolo had excellent sauce but both the linguini and the shrimp were overdone. The pasta was mushy. If you can make a great Spedini ala Romano, you've got my vote - but this was sad. (The old Areo in Bay Ridge (now closed) made the best.) The sauce was watery. Baked clams? Ordinary... which is also why I think Gargiulo's is past its prime. One should want to order dozens of baked clams if they're made right. The best are still made by Dom Peppe's on Lefferts Boulevard in Queens. Everyone else's meals were fine. The prices were reasonable (especially compared to Manhattan), but is it worth the trip? Went to the restaurant for my birthday! Had an excellent meal joined by two of my friends. Everyone was friendly. The service was great and the food too! I loved the seafood salad especially, not many places make it fresh and old school. Everything we had was great and the tortufo was perfect! The waiters sang the birthday song and took pictures. BEST BAKED CLAMS on the old school dining trail in Brooklyn! Gargilius takes the clam so to speak. The dining room here is massive and grand with ceilings that soar a good 30 feet. The room speaks to a hundred years of food memories and some tall tales for sure. We were the first diners and they let us in early as one of our party was elderly. The bread here from Il Fornaretto on 17th Ave.- great choice- this bread does not need to be heated, it is classic and formidable with butter. Ate: Baked clams $13 Zuppa di Pesce $28 Veal Chop $24 Spaghetti Marinara Salad Veggies including zucchini, eggplant and potatoes(yes potatoes) Spummoni Gargiulo's is expensive and has no lunch special, but some items are so special it does not matter. The baked clams to start. After last summer eating at many of the boroughs old school Italian joints, these clams served by the waiter with the juice poured over the clams exhibits an hmmm upon consuming. The perfect breadcrumb to clam ratio, some garlic crunch- just delectable. The veal chop was a little less outstanding, just good, but a little small without the oooh ahhh presentation. The roasted veggies are also perfect.....simple and delish. The spaghetti sauce better than Fiorentino's, but slightly less outstanding than La Palina satisfied. The sad salad- old ice-berg was an embarrassment. The Spummoni was fine. I would come back for the clams and a differnet main, but definitely come back to Gargiulo's for more. read more

This is a 5 star restaurant full circle, Gargulios was recommended to me by my Priest. There is a reason why this restaurant has been here & successful for over 100 years! I had my Wedding reception here, and everything went so perfect with them. I had a Big problem with my cake from a bakery in the city. (Thank God they closed!!) and Gargulios did everything to fix it and make me happy. I loved their old fashioned chairs that were in the downstairs dining room. The owner Nino made sure I got those chairs for my wedding reception. All the staff were kind & knowledgeable on everything. There was nothing they would not do to make the evening perfect! I had my daughter's communion luncheon here. there were about 12/15 of us. Myself and my children are lifelong Vegetarian's and they had no problems in accommodating us on any changes and I must say with a smile as well :) The owner always comes to the tables to say hello. We have also been here several times for lunch & dinner as well. I Love the old world feel, & Ambiance. They have a very Large open kitchen which alone says so much about how they care about the quality of the food. The restaurant reminds me of Italy. They catered our wedding during COVID and were amazing. Everyone was raving about the wedding food, which you just don't hear that often. The calamari recanati was a massive hit. Best catered steak people have ever have. Prices were fair and reasonable based on the quality and quantity. I would never hesitate to work with them on catering basis. The staff treated my family and I like trash, except for the one busboy. This was our 1st and last time here. They only catered to the "regulars". The waiter did not follow up with us once we received our food until we called him over for the check. I asked the busboy who the manager was, once he showed me who he was.. It explained a lot. We were in NY 2 weeks ago and had dinner with our cousins. Since we normally don't go into Brooklyn, this is one place my hubby wanted to take me when we got there, and he made the reservations a month in advance. The restaurant had an nice open feel to it when you walk in before going up the stairs. There were 12 of us and we were seated at a corner table in the back immediately after everyone got there. We ordered 2 each of the Antipasti's items so that there would be enough options for the table. They were sooooo good and the Fish Salad seemed to be a hit for some!! For our entrees, I don't remember what everyone ordered, but some of us had the Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Rigatoni Bolognese, which I also had, but with Angel Hair pasta :-) and our son had the Ravioli. From the very beginning our experience was a poor one. Our waiter seemed very dis-interested in us being there when asked for a table in the back (empty dining room) he was annoyed. The waiter was prompt and brought us drinks quickly that was good. We ordered some appetizers the calamari was tasty but the baked clams were bad just bad first ones they taste I was concerned I was going to get sick. All of the ingredients were lacking in quality they were the cheapest of the cheap the mozzarella was rubbery the Veal Parmesan had no flavor or taste or texture. But the worst of all had to be the minestrone soup: all it was was broth a little bit of tomato and vegetables that was it I thought this was a joke I thought someone was gonna come out with a camera and tell me I've been punk'd. Sadly, I would never go there again and I would strongly suggest try some other restaurants in the area somethings are just best left old school and if that was old school it's good that we live in the present. read more

While I didn't have dinner at the restaurant I definitely feel like their catering is terrible and would not recommend it to anyone. For an $85 price point I think I took maybe 5 total bites of food. Unhealthy, overcooked, and bland. All of the money must have gone to the 15 waiters working to do 3 courses over 4 hours! I figured ordering shrimp would have been a simple route but low and behold it was AWFUL. Great atmosphere in here. Very spacious and open concept. The ceilings are very high and makes for a great experience. The massive parking lot also helps so parking isnt an issue. The meal was decent. The chicken parm was pretty good but the potato veggie platter that came with it was bland. They had these potato croquettes that were not pleasant. Overall I like the ambiance of the place made up for the slightly above avg food. I would come back to try some other items but based on the chick parm and ambiance this is a 4 star place. read more

Last week had lunch with my wife, my daughter and grandson. Wow! Last time I visited was nearly 50 years ago. The food was spectacular, prepared to perfection and service to match. As I learned there has been a change of ownership since my last visit but it was equally memorable. The staff was extremely accommodating particularly with an antsy four year old. I am still upset, 24 hours later on how poorly we were treated by the Staff. We were a party of 9 with a reservation that was made via the phone since our party was so large. When we arrived we were not allowed to enter as 4 of the men were wearing shorts. None of the shorts were gym shorts, but the man at the door still would not let us in. We were never informed when we called to make the reservation for this family celebratory dinner that there was a dress code. All of us in attendance complied with the dress code as the shorts were not gym shorts, even though the man at the door insisted at a glance they were. He never came out to check if they were not the right type of shorts but looked at them through the window at about 20 feet away. The treatment was horrible, embarrassing, and disappointing for an establishment in the hospitality business. I wouldn't go there, I have never been made to feel so unwelcome in a venue. read more

My fellow Yelpers. Don't believe the negative reviews of this long established restaurant. As you are well a where, we live in a time where many people refuse to be told what they can and cannot do. It is so obvious to me, that these negative reviews all stem from being told that they may not come into the restaurant dressed as they are. (There is a ample size sign hanging in the front door explaining their dress code) Having eaten here a number of times, it is obvious why the place is still a busy and thriving Brooklyn landmark. Shame on them for using Yelp to expose their insecurities. Ate there again yesterday in the 100+ degree heat and the food, service, atmosphere and air conditioning was all as expected, perfect. Came here before a concert at the Ford Amphitheater. I'm from Brooklyn and never been here before so I figured it was about time I paid this place a visit. They are VERY, I wouldn't say strict, but keen on the dress code. They have signs outside, 2 at that, about what is allowed inside. My brother was wearing shorts, albeit below the knee, but we still weren't sure if we'd be let in. They said okay, surprisingly. We were the first ones there after 4 on a Friday so for a while we had the whole place to ourselves. Totally old school vibe. Very clean and fancy. 2 well kept saltwater fish tanks in the back. There's an outside area that's a little more casual that serves pizza. Pretty big menu. Small wine by the glass menu but what was on there was great. Our server was Fabio. He was nice but totally spaced out, possibly stoned or drunk, and talked to us throughout our ENTIRE MEAL! I'm talking about standing tableside while we eat every part of our meal and incessantly talking!! Not cool. I think because of this talking and not paying attention that he got some of our order wrong. We ordered the fried mozzarella appetizer. He brought us the grilled portobello mushroom and asparagus appetizer instead. We got to eat both but were only charged for one. The asparagus app was delicious. The mozzarella one was just okay. Needed to be seasoned. I had to put lots of salt on it. I found that to be the theme for the night. My brother ordered the steak medium-rare. It came medium-well. I got the soft-shell crab special for $32. The corn salad it came with was yummy. The crab was bland and not seasoned at all. The best part of the meal was the Limoncello aioli they gave me for the crab. Delicious! They give you a potato croquette with every meal. That was good. The plate on the side of vegetables and potatoes seemed like an afterthought. Were we satisfied with our $157 meal? No. There are plenty of other amazing Italian restaurants in the area. Go to them instead. Would I come here again? Only to try the outside dining area where they serve pizza. On one plus side, the bathrooms were the cleanest bathrooms of any establishment I've ever been to. I'm glad I had the experience but don't think I'll be coming back. Be sure to stay away from the server Fabio from Montenegro. Unless you like servers that constantly touch you and won't shut the hell up. read more

What a traditional Italian restaurant from back in the day!! This place was jammed packed! This restaurant was loaded with Italians in it! They have valet parking. A nice bar area. We arrived early for our reservation, and were seated immediately. They had a prefix menu, and the traditional menu! We chose the traditional menu. I must say, the bread was AMAZING! Fresh! Toasted nicely, with awesome salted butter! Wish I could have made a meal on that!!! We ordered a pan seared fresh mozzarella, with sundried tomatoes and portabello mushrooms! It was excellent. We had pan seared tuna, topped with tomatoes and onions! Soft shell crabs! They were franchese. The only thing, is they seemed to fry them first. So it was too much batter for me. But they were a nice size. 2, to the order. They have sautéed vegetables for the table. An ol' Italian staple, a potatoe croquet!! Service was excellent! One nice thing, the valet parking, offered to hold car, while we attended a show near by after for a 10.00 fee. Thought that was a nice gesture! If you like thick meaty pasta sauces, perfectly cooked al dente fettuccine that was homemade in the kitchen with flavorful yet light cream sauce, fresh artichokes as though it had come from the farm that left you feeling refreshed, and excellent service that's attentive to your every need, then don't come to this place. It's 54° outside, air-conditioning is blasting inside so hard that I need to wear my jacket, my husband has asked for a seltzer water three times yet to no avail, no one has come to refill our regular waters on the table, and every single thing that was plopped down on our table of our over $125 worth of food, tasted like absolutely nothing. Let's start with the appetizers, how do you screw up prosciutto wrapped scallops, I'll tell you how you do it, you leave them in the deep fryer for so long after taking them out of the freezer that they taste like chewed rubber. Cut to what was supposed to be a stuffed artichoke but what really comes out as an artichoke covered in oil soaked breadcrumbs plopped down on yet another plate of oil. Not oil with rosemary, not oil with any accoutrements to it, just a bowl of hot piping oil. The highlight of the evening however, what is the seafood fra diavalo my husband ordered extra spicy that a two-year-old could've eaten, and my beef braciole which needed to cook for over 35 minutes, that just tasted like dry stringy meat with no seasoning no flavor even when I put half of the bowl of Parmesan on top (which the guy forgot to even bring and didn't bring until five minutes after we asked for it, and also didn't bring a spoon for it, and then five minutes later brought the spoon for it) still tasted like nothing. Finally capped off with a gift card that my husband had to take all the way back into the kitchen and stand there and have someone type into the back register because our server didn't know how to ring up e-card even though the restaurant sells them online. He was however, offered the job of doing dishes by another server while he was standing back there though, so that's something. If you're looking for a job, this might be the place for you, but if you're looking for some good Italian, stick to Mulberry Street. read more

A hidden gem. In all these years of visiting Coney Island, I've never gone past Nathan's and I didn't know it was here. This is a good, old school Italian restaurant. Linguini white clam, haven't had it in years, it was just delicious. We had a great time. As a Brooklynite I am ashamed that I haven't been to this place before. It's an old school Brooklyn establishment that has been around for years. They obviously know what they are doing since the place was pretty full on a Thursday night. Nice service, but they did forget a dessert for a freind. Its traditional Italian food that is done well. No thrills or frills. I had the veal marsala which was very delicious, and a freind had seafood risotto which she apparently enjoyed. They have free valet parking accross the street. For apetizer I do suggest the baked calamari which are very flavorful. I didn't have dessert, but someone got cannoli, and it looked really good.
