Meh. Very mediocre food. Food was bland, very heavy with the salt. Steak was nothing special, quite expensive meal for what we got. The whole restaurant needs a facelift. The manager was very nice and polite. Our waitress...took quite a while to order and she offered me parmesan cheese for my pasta, I said yes, she gave me a bit and spun on her heel and walked away. I'm used to telling the serving "when." Not them deciding I've had enough. And no "enjoy your meal," she plopped the cheese down and was gone. Disappointing. read more

There were four of us for dinner and we all enjoyed what we ordered. Wonderful bread and olive oil/balsamic; two choices of very fresh salad or soup (we all had salad). I had lamb; it was great. I thought the gnocchi was a great addition and some very nice al dente root vegetables that were tender and sweet. My only complaint was the waitress. She came to the table and interrupted our conversation. She didn't wait a moment for us to acknowledge her she walked up and INTERRUPTED us. It was very rude but she was very young and had we not been with another couple I would have politely corrected her but I didn't want to embarrass our friends. My husband always takes a while to figure out what he wants and she seemed annoyed that he couldn't hurry up and order. I would definitely go back as the food was very good and the rest of the service was good. Actually, my husband ordered a cocktail that he had never had before and a (different waiter) brought it to the table and had a nice conversation with my husband about how the cocktail was made -- that was awesome and we were pleased at that. I have been highly addicted to Gabriel's lately!!! I go regularly for lunch, only a couple times for dinner, Gabriel's has been super when it comes too the value of a lunch hour! Gabriel's has Awesome Mediterranean gnocchi. It's at a reasonable price (about $15). What's nice also is that they allow pick up orders for those "I'm too tired to go out nights". The gnocchi are really soft & w/a white cream sauce ~Also, I think they use local cherry tomatoes b/c the tomatoes always have good flavor ~not like store bought. read more

This old restaurant is in the middle of Old Town. It was our first time in Eureka and I must say I'm not a fan. The city is dirty and it has a lot of homeless. That's a separate topic. Gabriel's is pretty expensive but doesn't really back up the prices with their food. I got the spaghetti and meatballs and it was some way over sauced to the point my few noodles were floating. We got some apps, too, that were so so and nothing memorable. Not horrible Italian food but for the price I would expect much better. read more

We really wanted to have a good Italian meal, and ate here at the recommendation of our hotel manager. The restaurant was not crowded, but service was extremely slow. In addition, this restaurant sets a record high for rude and insolent service, and a record low for the lack of service. Imagine a server never checking to see if there were problems, never bringing bread or water refills, never clearing the plates on the table -- all simply because a customer had the temerity to question why warm Pelegrino was served over ice without even asking if ice were desired. The meal started with some fairly soft white bread, served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It was good enough to have more during the meal; unfortunately, we never were asked. The salad, consisting of blueberries, walnuts, Gorgonzola, in a balsamic vinaigrette, was good. This was the high point of the meal and the service. After this point, because we questioned the Perrier and asked for a new glass without ice, the server disappeared, except to bring the entree dishes. The entree dishes were the salmon appetizer -- salmon did not taste fresh and had an overly fishy taste. The Manila clams tasted fresh but were ruined by excessive salt. The duck came out with steaming hot risotto, but was so hot that the duck, although somewhat juicy, was overcooked. The skin was not crispy, but had a thick salt coating. When we tried to question the server, she refused to give her name and said any complaints had to be discussed with the manager. We have eaten at many good Italian restaurants -- this is clearly not one. We go out to have an enjoyable experience with good food and service. Came in this year (2020) for Valentine's Day, my partner and I knew it was going to be busy but we were pretty upset by the time we left. We showed up for our RESERVATION 15 minutes early and it wasn't until another 15 minutes after our reservation was set that we were seated. Once we were seated it seemed that only the back waiters were paying attention to our table, we got our waters & bread but not once were we approached by a waiter during the 20 minutes we were sat. Sounds kind of ridiculous but From the perspective we were in, watching tables that were sat AFTER us orders being taken & again, the waiters not even looking at our table once was pretty annoying. We ended up leaving before anyone could talk to us (which was about 45 mins in total) & they didn't seem pretty remorseful when we told them we were leaving due to the lack of service. I work in the service industry I completely empathize with busy, but being apologetic about it and doing your best to make sure EVERY guest is taken care of (not just the ones you know are gonna rack up an expensive bill). Four of us spent the evening in Eureka to break our trip to Bandon, Oregon. We were walking around the old town, passed this restaurant on our way to The Sea Grill. Not having reservations at the Sea Grill, the wait was about 30 minutes and we decided to return to Gabriel's, where seating was immediately available. The first ominous sign that we disregarded was an aroma of old fish that hit us as we entered the door. We did not want to be bad guests to our hosts, so we said nothing. We ordered appetizers: duck confit bruschetta and shrimp and peppers. The duck confit (I make it properly and have had it many times in France) might have been good but for a few things: 1, it was so thin that it might have been cut with a microtome--one could almost read the menu through them if one tried; 2, it was served on a thin slice of brie cheese, which was not a great but not a bad flavor pairing; and 3, it was served with a layer of pear. Now, foie gras and pear is a wonderful pairing, but not so with duck confit, even had the slices been thick enough to taste. The other appetizer was shrimp in a spicy pepper sauce, and it was acceptable. The entries were close to inedible. I ordered the waitress' favorite, the gnocchi. To her credit, she did say that they were not a light style. What was served, however, was not only chewy like poorly prepared octopus, but was not cooked. It was very short of being "al dente". I left about 3/4 of the plate. My wife had the eggplant parmesan. It was mediocre in flavor and texture; it was composed of breaded eggplant with melted cheese (mozzarella?) and devoid of any marinara sauce. The accompanying rigatoni was undercooked and the red sauce was non-descript. Our dining companions had the linguini with clams and ravioli filled with smoked ravioli. The filling was OK, but the pasta was, again, undercooked. More than 1/2 went back to the kitchen. The linguini with clams was barely touched. Of interest was the response of the manager(?) when he came to the table after we had finished. He asked if we wanted boxes for the food, and we thanked him but said "No." Four near complete dishes were being cleared by him and he never asked if there was a problem. We did not care to make a scene; we took our lickings, paid the check, and walked back to the Carter House. I must say that either the people who have rated this restaurant so highly are inexperienced diners or there was a major issue with the kitchen the night that we dined (perhaps ate is a better word) there. On the other hand a few reviews that we have read since returning from this dinner were quite similar to our experience, so I would have to say that the higher rankings may well come from less experienced diners. I do not know. i do know that we have spent many weeks in France and Italy in our 60+ years eating in trattorias and bistros as well as Michelin 3*** restaurants. We appreciate well prepared food at all levels. I say that only because I want to establish some credentials for this review. We had a less than stellar experience and one that left us most discouraged about our decision to not wait at The Sea Grill, where our hosts had eaten many times quite happily. We would not return to this restaurant. To say that it is an Italian restaurant is an insult to a country with superb cuisine. read more

I came with a group from work for lunch for a co-worker's birthday. It was a mess start to finish. We faxed our order ahead of time since we only had an hour. When we got to the table the waitress said, "Who had the cod salad?" No one said anything, so she checked her notes and said my name. I told her I had ordered the salmon salad, she said, "We don't have salmon, we have cod," and plonked it in front of me. Salmon is not cod! They are very different fish! We ordered from a menu they had faxed us the day before. Someone else ordered a pasta dish with salmon and they got salmon! So that was strike one. Strike two was not getting my iced tea until I was halfway through my salad. My friend got the saffron risotto, and it had way too much saffron. This is a powerful spice and it looked like the dumped half the bottle on it. She could barely eat it. At about ten to one (when we all had to be back at work) we asked for the check. The waitress told us it would be twenty minutes! We all gave cash to one person who was going to stay and pay the bill. My friend didn't have cash so we went downstairs to pay. The waitress was there chatting to another waiter at the bar. She looked right through us and went on chatting even after we waived at her. Finally we went up to the bar where the bartender came and asked us how he could help. My friend told him she would like to pay her bill and told him what she'd ordered. He went away then came back and said that it was all on one check so she couldn't pay for it separately. Why, then did it take 20 minutes to get the check! We went upstairs and gave the lady who was waiting a check. When we left, the host asked how our meal was. My friend, who is super nice, said "Fine." A co-worker who was with us said,"Don't lie, yours was horrible!" My friend said,"Well, there was a lot of saffron." The host turned around and walked away without a word. With service like this it is amazing they are still in business. read more

Our absolute favorite Old Town Eureka date spot. I go between the filet steak cooked medium or the smoked chicken ravioli. The best appetizer on the menu is the red pepper prawns. The sauce is just heavenly. Dessert is also a must, creme brulee duh! Excellent service always.. Call to reserve a window seat and you can people watch, that is always interesting haha! read more

Diabolical service - the smug, horrid hostess brought me half a flat pint of beer ("as that's all that's left in the keg.") then she ran off. No offer of a different beer or anything. She was full of haughtiness, as if she was doing us plebes some sort of favor. The antithesis of customer service. My jaw was on the floor at this rudeness. Plus, the food is garbage. I sure wish Tomaso's was still at this location. Midway through the meal, a mentally ill hobo appeared at the window and began gesturing that he'd like some of my food. This went on for over 10 minutes. Think the staff gave a shit? Realistically, I would have given my food to the hobo, but it would be a downgrade from a soup kitchen. 0 stars. For the terrible food and the worst waitstaff I've ever encountered, I think it's the worst restaurant in the county -- and I've lived here for 20 years. Inconsistant at best with a pissed-off atmosphere. If you read over the reviews you will see that this place is a real hit-or-miss proposition. However, as locals who like to eat out with limited choices, we optimistcally thought we'd give it another try. OMG, my partner was served the marche (house) salad that had a living slug slithering among the greens. Now I know that veggies come from gardens full of bugs and even careful cooks could miss something but A TWO-INCH SLUG!? When my friend showed the slug to the waitress, she snatched it from him with a curt 'sorry' and went to the kitchen. After 5 minutes or so, a fellow came out and offered to bring new salads but we had had enough and asked for our check. He said no charge and we left (and finished our dinner at Oberon which was good but understaffed). This place is run by people who all seem angry with each other. Friends have told me they've overheard heated arguments between the staff. We have had good food in the past but will never go there again. Ew! Gives me the willies. read more

If this is truly the best Italian food in Humboldt county, then I feel sorry for the people who live there. I can't believe I ate at the same restaurant as the other reviewers. I had the gnocchi, which tasted like it came out of a box. It was heavy on the flour and way too chewy. My boyfriend ordered the Filet Mignon, which he said was nothing to write home about. I guess we're gluttons for punishment because, after all this, we ordered dessert. I mean, how can you go wrong with Spumoni? It turns out, you can. It was boring and lacking in flavor. I've eaten better from my local supermarket. Needless to say, I'll never go back. Mediocre at best. First and last time here for our hard earned money. The bread in the bread basket was like Wonder bread taste and texture. The Bolognese (spaghetti) had very very little meat in it and was watery and so so flavor. The Moscato D'Asti was flat (it is supposed to be mildly bubbly), and we were there early after opening... could they be serving old wine? They seemed more interested in clearing our table quickly. Was really disappointed in this restaurant but I shouldnt have been surprised given the reviews I read. The service started out mediocre and got worse as the meal progressed. The server didn't know the specials or the soup and lacked a smile. My husband and I get a date about once every couple of months and only went to Gabriel's because brick and fire was booked. My husband got the veal saltimboca and liked it and I got the cod on linguine. Both of our entrees were good not amazing but when we ordered tiramisu for dessert we found we couldn't eat it because it felt like we were drinking a shot there was so much alcohol it burned! I'm pregnant and figured it would be prudent to eat it but overall it was just gross. My husband told the waiter that we didn't like it and it was unenjoyable and the guy just looked at us and left the bill. He became annoyed with us I presume because he never came back and we had to go to another waiter who also gave us attitude and lacked a smile. No thank you for coming in was given or any kind of positive comment. My husband and I have both worked in restaurants and have been appalled by the lack of customer service in humboldt, still not something you get used to. Have eaten here about ten times for group events and regular dinners (not as a personal choice). It is a small restaurant located in the Old Town historical district. Sometimes entrees are okay, but sometimes bland or overdone with only one flavor (like too much lemon or too much oil). Dry, stale tasting brushetta as appetizer. Inconsistent in quality and taste. Mushroom soup from Campbell's for sure, the service was so slow, we had a Xmas party there so I wanted to have a couple glasses of wine to loosen up, ha! Nope the waitress came around I think twice without food in her hand so she was not taking drink orders, I felt like she was just throwing food at us to get us out of there...and would it kill the servers to smile or maybe have a fucken personality ? One of the best examples of Italian food I have ever eaten. I ordered the clam linguine and my date ordered seafood fettuccine, and both were fantastic. I was shocked and impressed at the fact that my meal was made with house-made pasta, fresh and deliciously chewy. With dinner, I tried a glass of a local wine Dogwood white, which complemented the meal perfectly. Even though we were stuffed on the meal, we ended up ordering tiramisu (my personal favorite) and we were not disappointed. On top of that, we had a friendly, attentive server. First impression was good, liked the cozy atmosphere as we walked in. Hostess was snooty, maybe I'm not the type of clientelle she prefers to darken her doorway. We were seated and she asked if would like to start off with drinks. I looked at my friend to take the lead, but obviously that nano-second was too long for her, as she said "I'll be back in a couple of minutes". She never came back or even acknowledged us. About 15-20 minutes later a server came to the table, and the difference in personality was like night and day. What a breath of fresh air. She was pleasant and professional. From there things took a definite upswing. Drinks were ordered and promptly served. The Caesar salad was good, smoked salmon ravioli app. very tasty, though it had too many capers. My friend had the halibut entree and said it was very good. I had the veal which was very tasty. It was stuffed with prosciutto which added to the flavor, but it should have been julienned to make it less chewy, as that took away from the tender veal. Friend said his creme brulee was very good. I had the tiramisu which, while being rich and flavorful, had that previously frozen feel to it. It tasted watered down, as a pre-fab tiramisu would. The waitress also brought us a complimentary apertif and aologized for how long it took our food to arrive, which was very thoughtful, but not needed, as aside from the initial period of being ignored things seemed to flow smoothly. I'm giving it a solid 4 stars because it was an enjoyable evening and my comments about the food are minor issues. The food selection, prices, and service at Gabriel's is about the finest in Eureka. They really take pride in featuring a variety of regions in Italy and have regular special multi-course meals to feature one region per month, with wine flights. Their wine list is excellent. This a family operation in which a multitude of siblings have put their hearts into the business for over a decade. The effort, however, seems effortless. Professional, relaxed, delicious. I give this place a 3 because of the following reasons. First when my wife and I walked in the first thing we noticed was a musty smell and could tell it was most likely from the carpet. The decor was what you would expect in a small Italian eaterie. The server was very nice and helpful. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs, my wife ordered Seafood Pasta. We were given bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar ant that was ok. Our lunch arrived and looked and smelled wonderful. I tried the spaghetti sauce and it was overly sweet and could of used some acid to cut the sugar, the meatballs were ok and the pasta wad perfect. My wife liked her meal except that it was to acidic kind of lemony. The price was right for the meal over all it gets a three read more
