I don't think people in Eureka would know good Italian food if it bit them on the ass! I've tried this place 3 times in hopes I thought it sucked because I ordered the wrong thing, well I just paid 22 dollars for chicken mushroom linguini that was aweful ! Mushroom soup from Campbell's for sure, the service was so slow, we had a Xmas party there so I wanted to have a couple glasses of wine to loosen up, ha! Nope the waitress came around I think twice without food in her hand so she was not taking drink orders, I felt like she was just throwing food at us to get us out of there...and would it kill the servers to smile or maybe have a fucken personality ? They were god aweful and really need to get over themselves......won't be back that's for sure! read more

I wish I'd had the opportunity to eat great food here like many of the other reviewers claim to have had! I really wanted to like this place, as my husband and I are their neighbors and their vent blows great smells right outside our door! However, I cannot remember a worse experience at a restaurant! The waitress we had was incredibly rude; she did not even greet us, she just stood there and stared at us until we ordered. I ordered the fettuccini alfredo (should be hard to screw up, right?) and my husband ordered the saffron risotto. Both were completely inedible!! The alfredo was way oversalted, the pasta was mush and I don't even know what they did to the risotto! The worst part was we were stuck upstairs and our waitress did not come back to check on us for at least 45 minutes, at which point she brought us the bill. The place wasn't even busy! Our food had hardly been touched and she didn't even ask us if it was ok. She just dropped our check and promptly walked away! I was so tempted to not even pay for the food! I will never go back!! Judging from other reviews Gabriel's is usually a very good restaurant, but this time, for me, it was the Dinner From Hell. First the service. We were seated in the upper dining room with about eight tables full of diners, yet there was only one waiter! The waiter, who did try very hard to please everyone, was overwhelmed. He said they were short handed, but it is the responsibility of management to make sure there is adequate service. Call in extra help, pay overtime to keep other servers working late, close off some dining sections, but of course any of these would have cost the restaurant extra money. And now for my dinner. It was a pasta dish with various kinds of seafood. It was also saturated in lemon. I did not want to send it back or I may never have had dinner, so I ate as much of it as I could (about half). But all the lemon make it truly terrible. My wife's dinner, smoked salmon ravioli, was not great but was fairly good, and judging form other reviews most diners were happy with Gabriel's. Well I hate to say but my friend ordered the filet mignon. He was like damn this is the worst steak I've ever had. I being totally surprised made him give me some. It was so bad, seemed like the meat was bad to start with. Then we told the waitress she asked if he wanted something else he nicely declined. Then they left it on the check. I really want to like this place, but they make it so hard. Every few years the memory of the last time fades, and with so few options in Humboldt, I try it again. I don't know how the hire arrogant waitstaff with so little knowledge. If you really know your stuff you can let the service slide a bit, but to be unaware of the menu, what ingredients are AND give really poor untrained service is hard to find....but they continue to find them. Not going into the food, it's so uninspiring at best. I recommend just skipping Italian in Eureka. If you have to have it drive to La Trattoria in Arcata, it's not great, but not so dissappointing. read more

So I tried to order the meatloaf as a replacement but it came out like mush. I give this place a 3 because of the following reasons. First when my wife and I walked in the first thing we noticed was a musty smell and could tell it was most likely from the carpet. The decor was what you would expect in a small Italian eaterie. The server was very nice and helpful. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs, my wife ordered Seafood Pasta. We were given bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar ant that was ok. Our lunch arrived and looked and smelled wonderful. I tried the spaghetti sauce and it was overly sweet and could of used some acid to cut the sugar, the meatballs were ok and the pasta wad perfect. My wife liked her meal except that it was to acidic kind of lemony. The price was right for the meal over all it gets a three read more

Happened across this place looking for something else and was very pleasantly pleased with the deliciously prepared meal we ate. The seafood over pasta struck a great balance of garlic creamy goodness. My dinner guests got some chicken and multi colored peppers over pasta which was good, but not great. Wine list is nice too. My only real criticism is their bread which was a soft crusted white bread rather than a heartily crusted loaf.... Almost wonder bread like and a disappointment. Otherwise great find. read more

My wife and I order the sphagetti and meatball, bowl of chowder and grilled oysters. The chowder was blend and had no flavor. The oysters weren't even grilled. In addition with the blend food the restraint itself needs to be more clean. Dirt and dust could be seen on the staircase rail and fans on the ceiling. read more

Terrible experience, 2 1/2 hours after we were seated we still had no food. At that point I went to the waitress station to ask if our order had gotten lost the waitress didnt even look up at me and I was told that she had no control over the kitchen. I asked to speak to a manager and she waived her hand around and said he was around there somewhere. I waited a moment, she still did not look up from her paperwork to make an attempt to call the manager. I asked if I was supposed to go find him, she said, "look lady, I'm taking care of 50 people by myself, I don't have time to help you." The bill at my table was over $300, for 7 people and I was charged an 18% gratuity which I understand is standard but I do not expect to be treated like this for a guaranteed gratuity. In addition our drinks were not refilled until after our food came (1 soda for 2 1/2 hours), we each had one slice of bread and my nephews order was served incorrectly. When I told the manager of my experience he made some valid excuses for the wait but he never once said he was sorry. There's no love like your first. Sure, there are a lot of Italian restaurants in the greater Eureka area. Some though are better than others. Gabriel's is among the best and is the benchmark against which all others compare. There is however one thing I'd suggest to the owners to keep the momentum going. The quality of the monthly theme dinners has been hit or miss. While we used to have some of our best ever meals on these nights, lately they've been less than impressive. read more

I have been going to Gabe's for years and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! The atmosphere is great and the food is amazing. They have a well stocked bar and every drink i've had there is phenomenal. I have heard people complain that the waitresses are rude, and I have to say while they have always been reserved, they have never once been rude to me. They are a family run business and most of their employees have been there for years. It's a wonderful date spot, and while I recommend making reservations on Fridays and Saturdays, during the week you can usually just walk in. If you're trying to stay on a budget, just skip the drinks, or if you're not very hungry, their soup is always tasty and very affordable. read more

The service is good, but not super friendly. The salads also had a little too much dressing. I had the duck breast and it was really tasty! Gabriel's is a culinary adventure. My family has eaten here numerous times. The service is professional and friendly. The clam chowder is some of the best in the country, and we travel throughout. The entrees are very good size portions and delicious. The tiramisu and affagato are fantastic desserts. The tiramisu will be hard to beat. Drinks at the bar were stiff. The pizza is to die for! Thin and crispy crust with house-made sausage and a plethora of fresh meats (only for 12$)! Veal Linguini had me craving leftovers the next day. Chicken Penne with Pesto was yummy, especially if you love fresh basil. Did not get a chance to try the Spaghetti and Meatballs before my dad scarfed it down, looked delicious though! We came for dinner after HSU graduation ceremonies. The unpretentious facade open to a delightful two floor with balcony experience. We had reservations so we're seated quickly. Although seated by the server's station. There was little extraneous noise ( although the dumb waiter that brought the food from the kitchen to the second floor evoked a discussion on the use of such devices in movies and literature). Our server had a nice balance of friendliness and efficiency. He graciously took our group's picture and then got back to work. I had the grilled chicken Caesar salad and can honestly say it was the best I've ever had. The chicken was warm, juicy and tender; while the lettuce was cool and crisp. The dressing was just right. Completely Disappointed!! My friend and I stopped to have some food. And decided on Gabriel's seeing as the last time I ate there with 2 other friends it was really good! The bar tender was very rude and slow taking our drink order and there were only 3 tables in the restaurant ours being one of them. We ordered 2 drinks the chicken penne pesto and rib eye steak. They both came with salads. When the salads came to the table We started eating and my friend noticed a long blonde or white hair in the salad so I put them both at the edge of the table waiting for him to come back. He was to busy talking to notice and doesn't come clear the plates but brings out the entrees and I said to him my friends salad has a long hair in it! He tells me that no one in the restaurant has blonde or white hair and proceeds to tell me we are all Italian!! I told him I'm Italian as well and he tries to fist pump me UM NO! I said I'll take our bill please I do not want the food! I will pay for our 2 drinks and the salads (even with a hair in it) and he said to me I've seen all kinds of scams? And tries giving me a bill for the entrees? How was I trying to scam offering to pay for the drinks and a salad that has a hair in it that didn't have but 2 bites!? read more

Our motel hostess recommended this place and we had a very pleasant experience. I had the duck breast and Mrs. D. had the fettucinni and clam special. Both were very good. The best aspect of the whole experience was the service. Our server and the bartender were very helpful with the wine selection, and we ended up with a custom mix of Moscato and Red. IGabriel's is located in Old Town near a number of boutiques and specialty stores near the foot of "E" street. Small and well appointed with a small well stocked bar and dining area below and loft opening onto a patio, as nice as any restaurant in North Beach. Usually there is a Pavarotti CD playing quietly in the background. Family owned and operated the owners or one of the owners will likely serve your food or drinks. We've lived in Humboldt County a dozen years or so and have been to Gabriel's on many occasions. Weekday afternoon lunch, weekend dinners and recently a weeknight group (10) dinner. On each occasion the service has been superb, and the food well prepared. The servings, are, in a word, generous. It's not a fast food restaurant and some pasta and chicken dishes take a while to prepare especially using fresh ingredients. Our last visit was with a group of ten and we were seated in the loft. A second party of twelve or so was seated behind us. The food was delicious. Veal, pasta scampi, clams mussels etc. The salad is great with a rich Gorgonzola dressing Olive oil and balsamic dip for the warm bread. The food is sent up to the loft by dumbwaiter so it all arrives together hot and ready to serve. . One of the owners took care of both groups, with out any problem. Well drinks are reasonable and the call liquors, Chopin, Gray Goose, Ketel and premium Scotches, etc. are higher, but pretty much what the neighbors charge. You won't be disappointed. My Partner and I had a lovely meal at Gabriels last night and I had to write a review about the experience. Firstly the atmosphere was great the tables are nicely appointed and the music was at just the right level for ambient Italian sounds, the TV was a bit distracting but overall the setting is beautiful. Secondly our service was great. Nothing was rushed and we were able to sit and have a four course meal as the last table in the place without ever feeling pressured to leave or hurried. Additionally our waiter had great feedback to our questions and was pleasant and cheerful. We started with the Carpaccio and Bruschetta which were both good the Carpaccio being the standout of the two. I did add some balsamic and olive oil to the bruschetta to give it a little kick. Next was the Gnocchi Mediterranean which was a lovely Primi course cooked just right in a lemon pepper cream with fresh cherry tomatos. Onto the Veal Saltimboca which I had and the Lamb Chops in a black fig sauce which she ordered, both divine and paired with a very nice and affordable Saint Joseph Cote du Rhone. My only negative comments about the entrees was that the Artichoke Pie was pretty salty and the lamb just slightly undercooked but given how excellent everything else was those were minor issues. While looking over the menus when we first were seated the tables next to us were discussing dessert and we overheard the raves for the Tiramisu which I had to have mostly because I love it and secondly it is a great litmus for true a Italian Restaurant, in my opinion. It was awesome!!!! Paired with a White Port from Ferreria and espressos with such a rich crema on top I thought I was back in Rome it was a fabulous ending to a wonderful meal. read more

My wife ordered the seafood linguine I ordered up the Alaskan cod hoggie not much difference in price by the way. When my sandwich came I was curious so I removed the top bun to find a total of 3 pieces of fried cod about 1/2 the size of my thumb.. As luck would have it the manager was near by so I asked him if this was the normal amount of fish they put on their $14 hoggie and he said yes.. I am a life long Humboldt resident and this was my first time here. Absolutely delightful!! Everything was perfect. My husband ordered three small plates and I went with the sausage ravioli. I ordered a mixed drink off there winter cocktail specials and my husband ordered two. Also excellently made. The service was quick. The waiter was attentive.
