Nothing too special about Fugu Sushi. Food was mediocre & sushi was alright. I got the Yellowtail roll in my bento and the fish to rice portioning is not that great. Service was great. I just wanted to try a local sushi place.
I ordered 3 rolls, Ginza, Boston and Alaskan. The online ordering process was very simple. When I went to pick it up, I was surprised how impersonal it was. The cashier was inside and my order was placed in this clear drawer. I gave the cash through a slot. The rolls tasted fresh. The portion is small though. For $12, I expected a soup and salad with the entree. No, you have to pick one. I will be sticking to Ninja 86 going forward. For $10, I can have 3 rolls with soup and salad.
Fugu is now open for takeout and delivery during the covid crisis. I was really missing my sushi fix and I ordered the 3 roll lunch special about an hour ago. I got the AK47 roll, shrimp tempura, and California roll. It was very good and fresh. Delivery was fasttttt! Check them out! Thank you Fugu for being open during this time and for being so delicious!
My go-to sushi place! I can't believe this restaraunt only has a 3.5 rating. I've been coming here for the longest. I usually get the teriyaki bento boxes because it offers a variety of things. They're so fulfilling. I also love the mango summer roll (not sure what it's called but there's a picture of it on the menu). It's refreshing! E though it's a special roll so it's more pricey, it feels like there's a lot of pieces to it. Definitely does not leave you feeling like it was a waste of money for the price and quantity. I ordered the lunch 3 rolls with the garden salad. I can tell that it's made with HIGH quality ingredients because of how fresh it is. Fugu is definitely not frugal with the portions. They DON'T just give you a tiny piece of eel in its rolls NOR do they fool customers by giving a load of rice with a lack of "meat". It was my first time trying the fried cheesecake and i go crazy for cheesecakes. To my surprise, the cheesecake part wasn't solid (putting it in the fridge would solve). It was more creamy. When dipped into the whipped cream, the tempura part plus all the flavors just go perfect together. The texture and taste remind me of coconut flakes/ pudding? It was delicious. I would definitely recommend.
The sushi and the rolls are good quality. Love the large platter because it comes with 35 pieces of sushi and 6 rolls of choice. Very affordable. Love this place!
I've been ordering here for about two years now and I must say that their quality does not disappoint. They always make sure their fish is freshly sourced and the quantity is consistent with each order. The salmon and white tuna sashimis are my go to. The thickness of each cut does not disappoint and the salmon has the right amount of marbling. The white tuna is always buttery and I would argue is probably one of their best pieces. As for the rolls, I always go for eel avocado, salmon avocado, spicy white tuna, and shrimp tempura. They do the basics well here and to be honest that's what I come here for. Best believe I've been ordering here during this quarantine every time I get sushi cravings.
We stopped in for lunch while they have the lunch specials! I got a 2 rolls lunch salmon roll and an eel and cucumber roll while my partner got the sashimi lunch which came with 9 pieces of chef's choice. They came with a choice of miso soup or house salad so we both got miso soup. This place is honestly so cheap for that next-level up from grocery store sushi. The fish was fresh and the food was ready pretty quickly after order. Only reason why it wasn't 5 star for me is because it wasn't knock your socks off - there was little eel to cucumber and it was drenched in sauce but the salmon roll was great! There was plenty of salon to rice.
I highly recommend this cafe if you want to have a delicious meal and have a good time. Very friendly and responsive staff. Very fast delivery of any dishes. Insanely delicious food and a pleasant atmosphere. We are delighted We always come to this place for delicious food.
Visit: April 27, 2018 // 4-5pm Stopped in on a Friday afternoon, post lunch hour and the weather outside was cloudy and rainy so my brother and I were looking forward to an early dinner and decided to get some sushi. Place was fairly empty when we walked in. FOOD: From everything we'd ordered, I highly highly recommend their sushi appetizer, Tako Su which is sliced octopus soaked with vinaigrette on top of lemon grass (i think that's what it was). It was so delicious! Not to sour or sweet, the balance was, dare I say, perfect! The octopus also wasn't too firm, it held a nice consistency in terms of texture. The hand rolls were delicious also. I like that their spicy salmon roll has a little bit of tempura mixed into the fish, giving it a nice crunch and texture. I personally didn't taste the sashimi, but my brother said it didn't taste as fresh as he would have liked or expected but it was all still pretty good since he finished the bowl. SERVICE: Waitress was friendly and nice, and we received everything we'd ordered without mistake or issue. However, we left in a rush without realizing the food we had asked to pack wasn't given to us yet and one of the girls ran out and flagged us down which was super nice of her to do. It was our fault completely for forgetting but it was great of them to go out and catch us. Totally appreciate that, so overall, wonderful service! INTERIOR: Spacious, clean and aesthetically minimalist. Booths were also really spacious, and felt more private as the dividers reached the ceiling. So unless you're in a group and happen to be the unfortunate friend hanging off the edge, you won't see the customers directly behind your seat or in front. Obviously to the sides you're visible but I appreciate the depth of the booth's seats. BATHROOM: Two individual bathrooms for each gender. Women's side is tiled white, with a pretty picture of a flower hanging on the wall. There's a railing for you to hold if you need, the toilet is seated rather high so it's useful. It was overall quite clean, and appropriately stocked of proper supplies. No hand dryer, just regular paper towels. PARKING: Conveniently located on Bay Parkway which is hit or miss with parking depending on the day of the week and time of the day. On the side of the street that the restaurant is located, there's metered parking with a 1 hour time limit so be wary. You can choose to go down the residential streets to find parking without paying for a meter but chances of scoring a spot are slim. I enjoyed my first visit and experience at this restaurant, and intend to return if I'm in the area. I'm even willing to go out of my way just to eat the octopus appetizer. I highly recommend you check them out and I hope you have a similarly good experience!
I grabbed the fugu sushi to go after class and a long day, and it hit the spot perfectly. I've been on a serious sushi obsession lately, and even after sitting in the fridge for a few hours, it still tasted like it was made right in front of me. Super fresh, great proportions, and honestly so satisfying. I can't wait to come back and get more. Service was fast as well. read more

I come here frequently to get lunch. However, recently, I noticed that the quality of the sushi has been getting progressively worse. The rolls fall apart too easily. Otherwise, the service is alright and the place is welcoming and comfortable. read more

After giving it another try, I like the fact that they use less rice on their sushi and their foods here taste better than most of the 86 st sushi shops. My favorites include their sweet potato roll, spicy crunchy kani roll, eel avocado roll, shrimp tempura roll, vegetable tempura, kani salad. read more

I came back again and was pleasantly surprised at the consistency of their food. The tempura was delicious as usual. However, the service of one of the waitresses was not so great, hence the 2 stars. She was pretty rude, slamming dishes onto the table without a word. Seemed like she didn't want to be there. We were the only table seated, but the entire restaurant was filled with the loud chatter of her and the sushi chefs. The hostess was however very friendly and kind. Been here twice since I was in the area and craving sushi. The place is pretty dark as you walk in and I did not know what to make of it when I first came here. There is a decent amount of seats in there and the staff was extremely friendly both times that I have been here. I have came here on a weekend both times and I never had to wait for a seat. I have only been here for the sushi which is pretty affordable. Depending on how many rolls you order the wait is a bit long sine they have two people making it and it does take longer if you order a lot more. I think I got 6 rolls and the price came out to be $18 before tips, which is pretty cheap for sushi especially if you randomly have a craving. I would say that the fish isn't the freshest and that it wasn't the besting sushi I ever had in my life but it wasn't the worse. It is affordable and it gets the job done when I had a sushi craving and I was in the neighborhood. read more

I don't understand why this location has such negative reviews because this is literally my go to spot for a quick bite of sushi and Japanese food. I live conveniently close to this spot , so I am always inclined to visit whenever my sushi cravings come around. Although I haven't written a review for this spot before, I have been a loyal customer for about three years now and I have yet to have a bad experience here. Firstly, I absolutely recommend their lunch specials of their sushi rolls and bento boxes. It is a inexpensive price to pay for a good amount of quality heavy food, which is ongoing from 11:30am to 4:00pm. Most of their options come with soup or salad. I usually get the salad because of the sauce that comes with it. It is a generous portion of greens and it tastes good too. Although I don't enjoy the texture of raw food, I always dine in with friends who do order raw sashimi and sushi. By the looks and descriptions that my friends give, it is a fresh and delicious meal. The sashimi comes out with vibrant colors, which is a clear indication that it was just freshly prepared and sliced. After working with poke and raw fish, I can clearly see that their fish is fresh. Not only that, but their fish is all cut in very thick slices, unlike a lot of other sushi spots. As for what I usually get, I mainly order their beef terriyaki, whether it is in a bento box or by itself. When you order the beef terriyaki alone, it comes in a sizzling platter. What I like about it is that it tastes even better than some steaks that I have tried in the city. Not only that, but the servers ask you for your preference in rarity of the meat, unlike other sushi spots. Usually other sushi places just overcook their selection of meat and serve it to you. Here, you can find a large and juicy beef piece that is still sizzling when it is served to you that comes with a few vegetables as well as a bowl of rice. I honestly think that this is the meal that is most worth your money, aside from the lunch specials. For rows, my go to's are the shrimp tempura, eel avocado, and spicy salmon. The service here is friendly and quick. They welcome you with kind smiles and always ensure that they do not keep their customers waiting for too long. This includes taking orders or even completing pick up orders in a timely manner. I also like that the servers are lenient on specific orders. For example, you can sometimes substitute specific rows if it already comes with the dish. Also they have fast free wifi!!!! I love this spot and definitely recommend it to anyone craving some sushi. read more

We ordered here for lunch at my job one day last week. This was my first time ordering from here and my first time having teriyaki chicken and a bento box. I love Japanese salads for the fact that they come with that ginger dressing & theirs was very tasty. For my meal, I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box which comes with rice, California rolls and dumplings (pork dumplings which I gave away since I do not eat pork). The chicken teriyaki was okay and so were the California rolls. We also ordered the fried green tea ice cream which I didn't eat the fried part but the green tea ice cream was so delicious. We ordered the mango cheesecake, which tasted alright. I'm glad I tried it and it wasn't a bad experience. May order again if I'm ever in the mood for Japanese at work! read more

I've been going to Fugu for almost 7 years for any type of occasion. I just like their little booths and interior design overall. The food is always great and prices are low. The only bad news for me was the green tea - they charge 1$ per cup!!! Normally all Japanese restaurants have their tea for free and Fugu had free tea for a long time. I always order sushi rolls or chicken teriyaki - you can never go wrong with these at Fugu. read more
A near by place for when I need a convenient, relatively cheap sushi fix. I've gotten mostly take out from the place, but recently came here for a casual dinner with two friends. Decor in the restaurant is nice for a small place, with a lot of individual booths. For a Friday night, it was surprisingly very quiet though with plenty of open seating. They have always had deals in certain rolls (I remember $2.50 rolls at one point) but seemed to have recently continued to increase in prices ranging from $2.75-$3 which I only discovered the differences on the bill, not exactly all $2.75 as listed on their menus. Can pay about $11 for 3 rolls including tax and tips. Food itself was adequate with okay ingredients, nothing special. You get what you paid for. Service was polite, attentive with refilling tea, but slow with coming out with dishes even with only a few tables - perhaps they're busy with fulfilling take out orders. Pretty much would come here for affordable sushi, but not a place I would go out of my way to return to. read more

Stay away from this place -- I found a STAPLE in my sushi roll! I was choking on it. Did they made my sushi on a dirty counter with loose staples on it?!? That's the only explanation I came up with for how this could have happened. I called the restaurant immediately and was met with an unsurprised female worker. I told her what happened and she nonchalantly said, "Just call Grubhub and they'll give you a refund." What?!? It sounds like this has happened before. After I got my refund the same woman called me back and asked that I return the order so "they can have a meeting with the sushi chefs." Yeah right, they just wanted to make sure I didn't get a free meal. I made sure to leave them a note with the staple taped to a post-it for their said "meeting." read more

I ordered today from Fugu. The Sushi Regular and Tuna Roll that came with it was good. However, I also ordered a Volcano Roll. Any time I've ordered it from any other restaurant, it has tuna or whitefish inside, with eel. Fugu just dipped a California Roll in some batter and fried it. And let me tell you, fried avocado? Gross!! I'm thinking since my food came 40 mins late, they thought they would cut corners because they were busy. Well, I noticed. Not to mention the fact that it's in the "Special Rolls" section on Grubhub and they charge $7.95. NOT good!! read more

This is easily my favorite casual sushi restaurant in New York. The friendly staff, personalized service and superb sushi preparation makes every dining experience wonderful. The food is what you expect from a mid-tier sushi restaurant. Traditional sushi/sashimi menu with nothing remarkably unique. However they prepare the dishes well, with the fish well-cut and rice well-packed. A solid dining experience, if you are looking to have a nice peaceful dining experience. read more

I actually like this place. Only serves sushi, some yakisoba and bento box meals. I ordered a chirashi bowl (13.95) and my friend ordered the sushi deluxe (12.95) (essentially we both ordered sashimi...) Prices for sushi are cheap, and I'll definitely consider delivery since I live so close. Sashimi tastes alright, I can't defend that it's fresh, but some of the flavor is still intact. Salmon is strong, tuna is slick, and the octopus is nice and crunchy. Definitely will try their other sushis. read more
