I don't understand why this place isn't getting more hype - this is the hidden gem of my neighborhood! Omiya on Ave U is my go-to takeout sushi spot and I probably stop by here once a week. I always call ahead and place an order for pickup before I leave my house and it's ready within 15 minutes. The three-roll lunch special with a soup or salad is $13.95. If you pay in cash, it is tax-free. My favorite go-to rolls are the spicy salmon, salmon mango, and shrimp tempura, but instead of the tempura, I got the spicy cooked scallop to try today, which was also quite good! We ordered chef's appetizer (Hawaii island) which was very good actually, I asked the waiter to make it not spicy but it still was spicy for some reason. After we made the order, I saw on the menu that if you order 1 chef appetizer, you can get another one for free. So we asked a waiter if we can have that, she said yes, but she didn't say anything when we were making an order. We wouldn't get it if we didn't ask. Ordered for takeout for a Saturday afternoon at around 12:30. I wanted to try a different spot since our go-to in the area has been going downhill. They currently still don't have indoor dining (as of January 2024). We ordered a few of the 3 roll lunch specials, a salmon lover, and gyoza. Some of the basic rolls we had included a tuna roll, shrimp tempura, salmon skin, white tuna, california, and eel avocado. These kinds of Americanized sushi takeout places are usually hit or miss but this one was a hit! I was impressed with the rolls and the rice to fish ratio. Not every place, especially sushi spots around Brighton and Sheepshead, takes the time to make sure everything is right. I've tried many sushi places in Brooklyn, but the quality of the food here stands out. The rolls are excellent--fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. If you're unsure what to try, I highly recommend the tuna roll. The tuna tasted like it was just pulled from the ocean--so fresh and delicious! Good sushi and good customer service in one place? My most frequented sushi spot on Avenue U, and also definitely higher quality than its neighbors. I've eaten here many times, but it took me eating a whole sashimi platter before finally deciding to tell my Yelp neighbors to order here haha. Sashimi Platter $22/18 pieces: this comes with salmon, yellowtail, tuna, white tuna, and red snapper (this is in order of my taste preference). Umm this is a steal, right? Especially considering how insanely fresh and buttery the fish is. In particular, I love the salmon and yellowtail. Those are must orders! You can order the salmon specifically, they have a sashimi platter for that. Red snapper was my least favorite, has a bit of a weird taste to it that I can't place, but the other two are good, just nowhere near as good as the fresh salmon sashimi Puppy Love $12: this is spicy tuna wrapped in sea bass and you should totally order this. If you pay with cash they give a small discount. I ordered the magic salmon, samurai, and spicy shrimp roll. Samurai is a good mix of eel and salmon. Magic salmon is for the salmon lovers. There was a mix up one time and they corrected my order the next time without a problem. They usually arrive with the order in 30 mins. I mean for $19.95, it's not exactly absurd anyhow. When asked about it the proprietor just casually said "oh for DoorDash- that does not apply." Me: " but you hear me right? One of the best local sushi restaurants in Sheepshead Bay ... and still my favorite. With the explosion of 50% off sushi restaurants in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood over the last decade, it's easy for some sushi restaurants to get left behind and for new ones to take over. However, Omiya has really stood the test of time and is still my go to local sushi restaurant after I first came here in 2011. Although the prices have increased since 2011, and not by much, not much else has. So what separates them from the rest? First, their sushi is just as fresh and delicious as it was when I first came here. I've eaten here well over 50 times and their quality is consistent every time. In addition, their rolls, especially their regular rolls, are HUGE compared to other local 50% sushi restaurants and they are distributed very evenly with rice and fish. It's the 1st thing I really noticed when I first started dining here. As for my favorite regular rolls over the years, they've included the spicy cook scallop and spicy yellowtail rolls, on top of the typical eel avocado, spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls. You can't go wrong with any of these. Second, their menu still offers the largest assortment of appetizers, regular rolls and special rolls I've seen anywhere. To be exact, they offer 28 different appetizers, and that's not to even mention the 31 chef's special appetizers, which are buy 1 get 1 free. They also list 53 different regular rolls at still just $3.00 per roll and 60 house special rolls. Yes, you read that right! And what's even better? Their house special rolls are also buy 1 get 1 free! I have never been to another sushi restaurant that offers buy 1 get 1 free special rolls and that's a major reason I love them. Besides the great sushi, the restaurant is evenly spaced and typically moderately busy inside, so noise is at a minimum. With the seemingly moderate business, some might be deterred to go to the busier restaurants, like Mitoushi or Chikirin on Sheepshead Bay, but don't let the lighter traffic fool you as a lot of customers seem to do takeout. Also, the service has always been excellent and the folks here are very friendly greeting customers as they come in and when they leave. As long as the quality and menu remain, I will definitely be coming back for years to come. read more

I have been coming here for around 3 years now and it's my local go to sushi spot. They have great service and the owners are there almost every night working hard. Pre Covid-19 I would usually dine in because they have a buy one get one chef appetizer special when you dine in. I would usually get the star wars salad (rock shrimp tempura with avocado and green sauce) with the salmon/tuna pizza. However, if you're ordering delivery/takeout they have a chef special where you can buy one special roll and get another one for free. Omiya is the only sushi place I know that has this special. The special makes ordering great sushi very affordable. Looking forward to them reopening indoor dining so I can get the appetizers again. Best sushi in town! It's casual, affordable, and they have the best appetizers. I dine in here very often to enjoy their buy one get one(BOGO) free appetizers. My favorite is the Tuna + Salmon cracker, and the Rock Shrimp. They put a myriad of sauces on top of the crackers which make them taste AMAZING. I always see people order this dish so I'm assuming it's one of their best. Definitely give the crackers a try! Their house special rolls may look a bit pricey at first, but don't forget they're also BOGO!! You pay for one roll(the more expensive one or of equal price) and you can pick the same one or different special roll which you get for free! The service staff is very friendly & always make sure my cup is refilled constantly with tea. They serve alcohol(beer, wine & sake) as well as bubble tea! The Thai iced tea is one of my favorites. I would also recommend stepping out of your comfort zone and try different rolls / appetizers because they have so many options that you're bound to like something. The regular rolls are all priced at $3, which is extremely affordable for being a restaurant in NYC. Finish off your meal with their fried ice cream (I recommend green tea) or Mochi ice cream.
