Ambiance is nice. For appetizer we got the rock n appetizer which was good. Then for entrees we ordered: the dancing eel roll and hubby got the California dinner. His came with soup and I got the salad. I love their salad because of the sauce. I ate some pieces of my husband's roll and they were good. Dancing eel roll was good but a bit sweet and I didn't like it too much. I used to order that a lot before my pregnancy and now I didn't care for it. I also got the green tea tempura ice cream. It was good, but next time I'll should ask them to hold the whipped cream. It made it too sweet and I couldn't taste the green tea ice cream much. Haven't had food here in a while since the neighborhood has a lot more Japanese spots these days, but I ordered lunch here recently, and it's still a solid spot. I got the salmon lunch bento. It came with a California roll, two shu mais, half an orange, salad/miso soup, rice, and the salmon. It's the typical stuff that comes with a bento but the orange was a surprise. It was even cut nicely to make it convenient to eat! I've been a little worried about the sodium level when I eat out cause everything just tastes so salty these days, but the food here was nicely seasoned and well balanced. Doesn't properly advertise ingredients and served me something I was allergic to (pork, which a lot of people also cannot eat due to religious purposes) and still made me pay for it. As someone who also works in food service, kinda shocked at the lack of care for allergies and other peoples diets. Sushi was fine, although having an allergic reaction is not ideal. I went here for lunch with my partner and ordered takeout. The interior was very spacious, and there's a 2nd floor. There is also a smaller, private room with sliding doors & you sit on the floor. They also have a bar. We ordered the eel avocado, salmon, and shrimp tempura rolls, were yummy. The Brooklyn roll, on the other hand, stood out for being much larger than the regular rolls. However, the Brooklyn roll wasn't that good even though it had plenty of filling. We also tried the takoyaki, which was delicious and tasted even better than the rolls. This was the closest place to my boyfriend (now husband)'s house so we visit quite often and order take out. He only started eating raw fish a while ago and is quite picky on places he's willing to try, this place being one of the few he is ok with (certain fish only). The staff is very nice but doesn't have very good common sense...you will see why with the explanation I have below. Their fish are usually fairly fresh and the price is reasonable. There was one occasion that we did a dine-in and was disappointed in the way they seated us. We were in a group of 6 or 7 and my sister's boyfriend was PROPOSING to my sister. They gave us the smallest room on the side. I was feeling so claustrophobic, not even kidding. It was very difficult for my brother-in-law at the time, especially because he is heftier in frame. Not to mention that it was still quite early in the day and the restaurant was practically empty...why couldn't they give us the bigger room or at the very least a more reasonable spot. On another occasion, I saw a group of 15+ people that said they already spoke with someone ahead of time and asked for the 2nd floor. But of course the staff tried to stuff them into another room (the bigger one) which of course did not work out and had to bring them upstairs. Now during the pandemic, I ordered take out a couple times only and the fish wasn't as fresh as they used to be. The salmon was still okay but the baby yellowtail was a no-go. Made a reservation for a room for 14 ppl a few days ahead but when i got there they said there was no reservation. They still gave us a room since it was around 5:30pm and not alot of people. Then after getting seated we made our order the waitress told us our order was coming. But then they told us they made the wrong order and gave to the other room (we were seated first and ordered first), we ordered 2 sushi and sashimi deluxe for 3 So we had to wait longer. From ordering to getting the sushi and sashimi serve it took approx 1-1.5hrs. We had other food served before thst but after we finish the other food the order still wasnt served. I am happy to say that we visited Tenzan today and found the items to be fresh and flavorful. The California roll is still being made without roe, but I am okay with that because their avocado is the same legendary liquicado that we've come to expect. The Miso was well made. The gyoza were properly cooked and smelled great. The spicy tuna hand roll used tuna that wasn't old, which is one of the great sushi downfalls. Everything was fresh, no complaints. They are a little more pricier than other places in Bayparkway, Bensonhurst area, but it really does come with more quality. The pieces of sushi are absolutely plump and full of fish. They have always produced quality food and fresh seafood (fish). This place also has great customer service. I usually always order the following rolls: California, Eel Avocado, Salmon roll, Spicy tuna, Chicken tempura, Salmon skin roll, Boston roll, and the nigiri pieces (various). The California rolls always have SO MUCH avocado, which is great, because sometimes sushi can have too much rice. With all the AYCE sushi places no longer opened for AYCE, it's been a very, very long year. Next best thing, Tenzan with their dinner bento box that comes with sushi or sashimi. I completely forgot how much food they give you. I only finished the miso soup, my Cali rolls, shumai, orange, a nibble of the salmon and, drink. The rest I had to take home. The food here hasn't changed, though everything is now packed in to go containers when dining in, rather than porcelain dishes or whatnots. Tenzan is one of the neighborhood sushi spots around. Inside, you'll see the main dining area and private booths on the side, with doors for a private dining experience. We were seated quickly in the main dining area and had attentive service. The waitress came to check on our table three times before we were ready to order. We ordered the Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe for Three, which came with 15 pieces of sushi, 20 pieces of sashimi and 3 deluxe rolls. Additionally, it came with two miso soups and a salad on the side. We also ordered the Spicy crunchy salmon roll. All of our food came out on a giant wooden boat, placed on our table. The boat filled all four of us up pretty quickly. One person in our group did think that their sashimi was cut smaller than other places. We also had a dozen oysters, but we would not have ordered it if we knew the price beforehand ($54). They kept trying to talk to us in Mandarin when we told them we didn't speak Mandarin. When the bill came, they let us know they charge card users an extra 4%. Called in at 5pm to order pick up and specifically stated pick up for 6:15pm. Arrived on time and was told to wait a few minutes for the food to be packed. Okay. 20 minutes later... food is almost ready. 30 minutes later... food just needs to be packed. Finally, 45 minutes later, got our food and items were missing. Had to wait an additional 10 minutes for everything to be ready. The rice on the sushi pieces were extra thick and fell apart. The rolls were made bad and also fell apart. What happened? First time getting sushi takeout from here and everything was quite good and tasted fresh. Tenzan is a pretty good choice for sushi in Brooklyn. If you're looking for huge pieces of sushi/sashimi or massively wrapped hand rolls. For the price, you definitely get enough food and the quality is slightly above average. We got ourselves a private booth seating where you first have to remove your shoes before entering. So make sure you don't wear those favorite socks with the holes in them. Service was a little off, we had 2 servers for our group and they clearly didn't communicate with each other. They were unsure if we received our food from the other waitress each time. But overall they were very friendly towards us. Tip : Request a booth if you have a large party. There's a light switch for you to call the waitress over. It turns on a red lightbulb to alert them. Stopped by here for dinner on a Tuesday night so it wasn't too busy - romantic ambience and they even had booths where you take off your shoes. I had the salmon special (salmon sashimi, 3 pieces of salmon sushi and one salmon roll) for under $20. The pieces of salmon were generous and it was pretty fresh. We also shared tatsuta age appetizer and it was not what we expected - couldn't really taste the tiny pieces of chicken that were super deep fried. The service was okay - everyone was attentive and refilled our tea constantly. The only thing was they served us a cup of iced water with a dirty stained cup. Have dined in several times and ordered take out recently, and instantly won over by their to go soy sauce trays for you to dip your sushi in (little things matter). Fresh, average priced sushi, with a more treat yoself feel than most. Sashimi pieces are $2 and also double the size, which is nice for your money's worth but not really the way sashimi should be done. This is a very popular spot in Brooklyn for sushi and I can see why - comfy table seating and clean lined semi private dining rooms...where you sit Japanese style. Shoes off and your feet go under the table in an alcove like seating. This is my 100th Yelp review so I picked Tenzan for the honors. Tip #1 - when the waiter or waitress comes to take your order, order everything as best you can. Sometimes waiting for them to return is like waiting on a free refill - you never know when they will return. Ha ha But seriously, it's super busy so I can see why it may take a while for them to return. Someone always does so the good news is that you don't have to rely on one person to wait on you. Even if it's not the same person, flag someone and they will come. Tip #2 - do tell them if you want certain sushi/sashimi plated separately. Restaurants like to play on presentation so it's happened before where they plate everything onto one if you don't specify. Because I did the ordering for my group of 6, I specified what could and could not be plated together. (Allergies) Tip #3 - if you can, make a reservation. Sometimes they're so busy on a given night, you can't tell how long you have to wait for a table. Doesn't matter the group size ... it matters the time you go. Tip #4 - know that if you order a la carte sushi/sashimi pieces, each order is 1 pc. Not two like many other places. But note, their slices are thick cut. Not thin. When you order a dinner box, you can choose a California roll, sashimi, or sushi to fill a compartment. It also comes w/ miso soup or a salad as well as other delicious side offerings - for ex: fresh cut fruit, shrimp dumplings, or gyoza. My fav dish of the night was the "a la carte" sushi/sashimi pieces I ordered off the menu to have them plate as my dinner. I normally would do the Sashimi dinner but this time I was craving very specific pieces so I ordered that way. The scallop (aka hotate) sashimi was excellent. Sweet and fresh, no briny flavor and it went down as smooth as it looks. The other favorite of the night was the salmon. Their salmon sashimi was cut thick so I ordered six pcs to supplement for an order of 10 that we usually order elsewhere. The other outstanding piece of sashimi was the surf clam. It was very fresh and the texture was a bit tougher as expected but not rubbery. Perfection. Finding a sushi place in Brooklyn.....not too hard if you know where to look. The sushi was pretty good. I knocked off a star based on service. When we were seated we were on my given 2 menus for 6 people which was a little annoying. Since only 2 people had been here before we had no idea what to order and we're sharing menus to look over the choices. The atmosphere is nice and they have cute private rooms where you can eat in a more authentic environment, but we hadn't because you have to take off your shoes and there was a huge group of us. Maybe next time! As for food, their rolls are good but in a smaller portions so multiple little things is probably best. A good option is shumai. They have a large selection of rolls which making deciding hard. I had a friend get the shrimp tempura roll. I don't remember the name of mine but it was similar except it had avocado and eel sauce on top which sold me!!! Another option was their lunch special that comes with miso soup. As for drinks, I had a Sapporo beer that paired nicely with my sushi. The total for 6 people was about $100 which was not bad for lunch time.
