This was my second visit to Tonchin, and it definitely won't be my last. The first time I came, I sat at one of the high-top tables in the front. This visit, we were seated in the back at a regular table, and I really enjoyed the extra space and more relaxed atmosphere. The ramen was excellent; rich, flavorful, and exactly what I was craving. Everything came out fresh and beautifully presented. Our waiter, Kenny, was attentive, friendly, and checked in on us throughout the meal without being overbearing. One thing you absolutely have to order is the kimchi mushrooms. They were so good that I'm still thinking about them the next day. Seriously, if Tonchin sold jars of them, I'd keep one stocked in my fridge at all times. Great food, great service, and a beautiful space. Went to Tonchin Brooklyn for dinner on a Friday night and it was good but nothing that i'm writing home about. It took about 45 minutes to get seated. It is pretty dimly lit inside and a little noisy. I got the Tokyo Classic Tonkotsu Ramen and the highlight was the noodles for me. They were perfectly chewy. The steak au poivre ramen is a must order! It was originally a limited edition collab item, but is now on the menu. It is rich and full of umami. The crispy potatoes are super addicting and complement the ramen well. The noodles are bouncy and had a nice chew to them. There are only 5 pieces of beef, but they are very tender and melt in your mouth. It is a bit pricey at $36, but very tasty. It is fairly easy to walk-in, we only had to wait 15 minutes for a table for 2. One thing to note is that the phone service is not very good so it is easy to miss the text that your table is ready. There is also no internet inside the restaurant as well. The madai tartare comes with fluffy, cheesy shokupan bread. This is some of the best ramen I've had in the city. It is packed with flavor, and the toppings are great. However, I do wish the pork was cut a little thicker and charred a little more. To start, I ordered their matcha lemonade, which was super refreshing with a well-balanced matcha flavor. The fingerling potatoes were buttery and flavorful, and we also ordered the curry wings, which were very good. For my main, I had their steak ramen, which was a collaboration they were featuring at the time, and it's probably one of the best bowls of ramen I've ever had. I was just early enough to get here before the lunch crowd did. The line quickly built up at the entrance. To make it simple, I ordered the lunch set. I picked the dashi salad and my favorite Tonkotsu ramen. The salad looked visually appealing and appetizing, with a mix of romaine lettuce, radicchio, and other leafy greens, topped with fresh chives. Walked in as a party of 2 on a Saturday afternoon at around 12:45pm and got seated right away! We started with the Cucumber Salad, which was good! Nothing special, but I really liked the dressing. My friend got the OG Tonkatsu Ramen, which she's ordered before and enjoyed. I got the Smoked Dashi Ramen and surprisingly really enjoyed it! We came for the Cabagges World collab of their steak au poivre ramen and luckily there was no wait on a Thursday night at around 6pm! The steak au poivre ramen exceeded our expectations. We loved the tenderness of the steak, which was well balanced with the thin and crispy frites. The broth was creamy and rich without being too heavy. Overall a solid first collab. In addition we got the half dozen oysters and madri tartare (red snapper) for apps. The oysters were fresh, and we loved the yuzu dressing and perilla leaf that go with it. The tartare came with Japanese milk bread topped with tomato butter and cheese which was a great combo. We also got the smoked dashi ramen, which had a healthy amount of clams and tastefully smoked broth that was well paired with the spicy sauce we got on the side. I also paired the meal with a Toki Highball ($10 for HH). It's nice that they offer happy hour until 7pm even on a Saturday, but it's only $1 discount for most items which isn't that much of a deal. Anyways, the real star of the show is the shaved ice here. Whether you're too full or not, order it! We got the Matcha Shaved Ice ($18) to share and it was perfection. It was a gigantic round snowball of fluffy ice that was thoroughly soaked in matcha flavor. The cream on top gave it a nice creamy sweetness along with bits of red bean. This is easily one of my favorite desserts and I'll be back here for this alone. I walked in early and was seated right away, which was a nice surprise. Happy hour was solid, I had a $5 sake (which was excellent) and a recommendation from the staff led me to the crispy fingerling potatoes. Perfectly crunchy with a bright touch of lemon zest, great for sharing. I followed that with the classic tonkotsu ramen with an extra egg, and it was even better than I remembered. We ate at Tonchin on a Saturday night, and the place was packed! We had a reservation and I would recommend doing that if you want to dine there on a weekend. The place is low lit with candles on the table. Honestly we had a bit of a hard time reading our menus but we managed. For the table, we got the kimchi mushrooms and the potato's. The kimchi mushrooms were very very good. That classic kimchi flavor but soaked into a meaty mushroom. The whole group loved them! Unfortunately, they forgot to bring out the potato's and we only received them after the main courses arrived. They were not impressive though, I would skip on that appetizer. I ordered the Original Tsukemen Dipping Ramen and it was spectacular. I'm still thinking about it a few days later. The noodles are separate from the broth and the broth is hyper concentrated. The slices of chashu were tender and savoury. The various other ingredients (bamboo, seaweed, etc.) all fit together really nicely for the overall dish. My friends both ordered the spicy tan tan ramen which was great too! For dessert we had the matcha kaki gori to share. Portion size was decent (I think a good amount to share for ~4 people). It was really sweet, and while I do like matcha, even for me it was a bit overpowering at times. Not sure I was a big fan of how sugary this was, but I think it was a nice contrast to the heavier/saltier broths from earlier.
