A cute and cozy cafe in Williamsburg you have to check it out! I originally went for the onigiri but arrived too late as they had stopped serving them for the day. I decided to try the bento box instead. I have never seen so much variety in a bento box! The vegetables served were so unique and each bite had a different flavor profile. However, I do wish there was a bit more seasoning. Some items were a bit bland. Would I go back? Yes! But for the Onigiri this time :)

After passing by when I either just ate or had my coffee, I finally ventured inside after one weekday morning. I ordered the egg and cheese sando with pastrami add-on. It did not disappoint. Eggs were fluffy and the pastrami was just the right amount. The flavors balanced each other well. The bread itself was very soft and perfectly cut into two. The space itself is simple but does the job. They have a display of rice balls and other treats. I definitely will make it point to dine in one of these days.

This cafe is a great new addition to the Williamsburg neighborhood. It's owned by the same couple as "Shalom Japan", the restaurant next door (which is also great). My go to order is the matcha with oat milk and a salmon onigiri. YUM! The onigiri are made fresh for each order which I honestly have never experienced before. All of the workers are very kind and the street facing tables have the perfect lighting and ambiance to read or work. I just can't stay away!

Tokidoki is a new aesthetic Japanese daytime (weekdays only) coffee and sando shop concept that I can only assume is affiliated with the stalwart Shalom Japan next door. I tried the egg and cheese sando and the miso soup on the side. The miso soup was rich with nicely tender, thick slabs of daikon and a generous portion of wakame, both of which I appreciated. The sando was not exactly what I was expecting, in that it appeared to be served on sandwich bread rather than milk bread. The omelette was nicely fluffy.

A great selection of Sandos, Onigiri, Bento, and pastry on their first day. I got the delicious Karaage Bento and the wonderful Pastrami, Egg and Cheese Sando

The menu is pretty diverse with various appetizers, sushi, and also ramen/curry so your standard izakaya fare. One of my favorite dishes here has been the chirashi. The fish was very fresh and it's pretty affordable. I've only ever been here in groups of two and I probably would recommend it for smaller groups because the space itself is small and most of the tables are two-seaters if I recall correctly.

It's been open for a few years, so clearly it has a good enough formula to keep the neighborhood happy. I have been here once before, but returned last week after dining several meals at Tomoni in Jackson Heights. Apparently, the owners are friends. Nonetheless, I needed to make the comparison. After my first few bites of their Tora Don and Chirashi Don, it was clear that this restaurant has the better quality seafood. Each slice of sashimi had vibrant colors, clean taste, and the proper texture. Tomoni is not bad, but fall slightly short of this caliber. With that said, there is an even farther gap between their rice quality. Though Tora is very good, Tomoni produces nearly perfect texture and acidity for my taste buds. Other than the best omakase restaurants in NYC, Tomoni shines as one of the best versions of sushi rice in the five boroughs. Service is good and space is cute. If I have a craving for some decent Japanese food, I would drive 20 minutes here for a meal anytime.
