Stop by to try the yakitori after dinner. We order 3 skewers but they sent us the pork instead of beef. I don't eat pork so they have to send me the beef skewer again. Unfortunately, the meat of the beef skewer turns bad and it's not edible. Now I wonder they know the beef is bad and give me pork on purpose instead. Amami in Greenpoint is a cozy Japanese eatery serving Japanese classics. For apps we had the the crispy pork gyoza and juicy chicken karaage. For mains we had the tonkotsu ramen, spicy roll combo (spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, and spicy crunch salmon) as well as the sushi ozara combo with 9 pieces of nigiri and a tuna roll. I love Amani. It's one of my favorite sushi spots in Brookyn, and has never disappointed. The food is excellent and consistent, both in terms of quality and presentation; the staff is friendly and unfailingly professional and accommodating, and the bar is the perfect setting for dining alone or with friends. I've dined here over 20 times, maybe over 30, alone and with various groups of friends, and I've never had an experience that was less than perfect. As someone who's worked in and managed restaurants for nearly 20 years, I know how hard it is to do things at a high level so consistently. I came here with a friend to catch up and split a few rolls. I ordered the miso sour for a cocktail which was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, honestly one of the best drinks I've had in a while. We decided on the white tuna with jalapeno roll, spicy girl roll, and eel roll, which were all delicious and unique. Came here for dinner when there was a fleet of cars and bikes that decided to do burnouts for the duration of the stay at the restaurant. Not sure if that was a regular occurrence or not. Regardless, I don't blame the restaurant. Appetizers Tuna Tartare - it was not bad, but the, what I think is flying fish roe gave it an odd flavor, which I didn't much care for. Short Rib Negimaki - it was VERY bland, like almost no seasoning, I had to dip it in soy sauce for additional flavor. It was almost like eating leeks/veggies with a hint of meat. Eggplant - This was hands down my favorite item on the menu, but I'm a huge fan of eggplant as well. It had an odd slimy texture, which I could have gone without, but the sauce on top was still good. Dinner Sushi - Alaskan King, Tuna Salmon Twister, and Lobster Got Fancy - overall the sushi, just not worth the price I've had much better sushi in NYC for lesser price. Chicken Katsu - what a joke for $28 - this is what single-handedly made me give such a low rating. It was like eating chicken tenders, without flavor... I started to eat the veggie garnish bellow, because it was better than the chicken. I added the suhsi rice thinking for some reason it's a curry and well it wasn't. I'll admit to initially writing off Amami as a run of the mill Japanese restaurant except with upscale decor. Restaurants in northern Brooklyn have to look the part to attract the upwardly mobile hungry and spendy diners in the neighborhood, after all, but my last few visits have me quite impressed. Not only is the food execution five stars all around, the cocktail program here is as good as the dedicated cocktail bars I regularly pay top dollar at. If Freddy is around, you want him making your drinks. He's so dedicated to his craft he'll even make his own strawberry salt for specialty drinks. They have drinks that smoke, drinks served in colorful tiki mugs, and drinks with layered flavor and ingredients. I didn't expect top tier drinks alongside my top tier izakaya eats, but I found it all at Amami. They have an extensive menu and I'd say to try whatever stands out to you, but some of my favorites include purple sweet potato tempura with wasabi mayo, the yellowtail jalapeno roll, and their fantastic takoyaki. Everything is reasonably priced. Service has been overwhelmingly attentive, especially for large groups. There's even a private room in the back for parties up to 20 people, where I threw a birthday party at recently. It may not be making restaurant news headlines, but I have never left Amami dissatisfied. read more

I have ordered the spicy scallop hand roll, sashimi deluxe, sushi and sashimi combo for two, yellowtail scallion roll, bluefin tuna sashimi and everything is hands down, amazing! Their cocktail menu is extensive and very creative. If you like old fashioneds, I would recommend the Japanese old fashioned. If you like Japanese whiskey, I would recommend ordering the Japanese whiskey flight for $28. If you're more of a sake person, there is also a sweet sake and dry sake option. I had been craving japanese food for a while because I miss my time living in Tokyo, and this place blew me away. Quality was amazing and food was fresh. You can taste all the ingredients and how natural they were. The lychee drink was literally half full. I've never seen that before. For the price, it could have been 3/4 full on a small wine glass. Not to mention that it was filled with ice. My bf and I are picky Japanese folk who eat Japanese food all the time. The karaage was seriously a standout dish- it was so delicious!! And the purple sweet potato fries were really unique and veeerry yummy too! Also, the green tea salt was incredible!? Who would have thought?!? Definitely a step above regular sushi and worth the very modest premium you pay. However, they jammed the two sushi rolls I ordered into one container, which caused the a few of the pieces I ordered to completely fall apart. For how nice and esteemed this place is, and for how much I paid, I would have appreciated the sushi in separate containers. I almost feel guilty docking a star for the packaging considering how good the food was especially for the price, but the fact that I had to re-assemble multiple pieces because they didn't spend an extra nickel on a second container was genuinely annoying. Seeing all the positive reviews this restaurant had, really gave me high expectations that were not met during my visit. I arrived with two friends on a Saturday for a late lunch. Upon arrival we were seated very promptly, however, , no one came to take our order for quite some time; We unsuccessfully try to flag someone down but we were overlooked. We all ordered off the lunch menu. I had the Katsu Curry rice and my friends ordered some sushi from the lunch menu. The Chirashi, Sushi and Sashimi were alright but these two dishes were nothing to write home about. The Katsu Curry rice was very bland and the katsu was not crunchy nor was the curry hot, it was lukewarm. For the price we paid I was expecting more for the food and the service. We were realllly impressed with Amami! We stopped by for dinner on a Friday night after making reservations day of. Somehow they still had room for four with seats outside at 7:30pm on one of the first weekends after COVID restrictions lifted. FOOD: okay so we four consider ourselves sushi ENTHUSIASTS. So we were PUMPED to get a res at an omakase spot in BK. Due to work, we had to cancel the omakase res and scramble to find another place for four. And we were quickly about to get a res at Amami- all expecting to "settle" for a Japanese restaurant with sushi (but not omakase our favorite). But when the sushi started coming out, we all were really happy and impressed by the quality of Amami's sushi. The four of us late two XL boats, six + rolls, and left the restaurant with our sushi food babies, very happy. SERVICE: we were seated outside so it was a bit busy but the servers were attentive, always around and very nice. We got our food quickly and efficiently (as well as our drinks) and never went longer than 10-15 mins before we could get the attention of our server. Drinks were also super delicious VERDICT: I would 1000000% recommend. Amami had better quality of sushi than any other state / place we've been this past year.
