Steak Tartare
Jasmine J.

The cutest little restaurant with pretty authentic French food! The Halloween decor inside was well done as well. The beef tartare was the perfect size and plated nicely. The Brussels sprouts had really large serving size which was a pleasant surprise and coated well with a really yummy sauce. I also got the steak frites which was perfectly cooked with yummy fries. I really enjoyed the side salad that complemented the dish really well. Overall I really enjoyed Frenchie and would def come again!

Came here for Saturday lunch and had a great experience. I made a reservation the night before just to be safe. It was a quite busy, but I don't think the wait would be long without a reservation. The greenhouse section was full when I arrived, with about a 15-minute wait, but I decided to sit in the dining room instead -- still beautifully decorated and full of charm. The food didn't disappoint. The steak tartare was flavorful, and the steak was cooked perfectly medium rare. The duck confit as well, with generous portions of tender duck, and the poached eggs were done just right. Service was attentive, with both the host and our server checking in often to make sure everything was going well. Would definitely recommend and come back again to try their sweet breakfasts.

Stopped here for a drink before dinner. Great cocktail list and nice little snacks. The white Negroni wasn't my cup of tea but it was well made. Oysters were delicious and very fresh.

This place has been sitting on my "someday soon" list for a while, and I finally made it. First thing to know: accessibility is not its strong suit. The stairs going in are narrow, the trip to the bathroom downstairs is a single-file adventure, and even the patio has a step down. Just something to keep in mind if that matters for you or your group. The space itself is interesting. Big enough for groups up front, a few smaller tables tucked away in the back, and greenery here and there that makes it feel less "restaurant box" and more alive. It can get chilly depending on where you sit, so maybe bring a layer. There's an open kitchen, which I love--you get a peek at the action (and a whiff of what's coming). Service was fine, not over the top, not checked-out either. Just... solid. Food: I had steak and eggs with potatoes and one of their mocktails. Huge points to them for having a creative zero-alcohol menu--it wasn't just soda or juice slapped in a glass. My guest went for the lobster eggs benedict, and while the lobster portion wasn't massive (maybe four ounces), they said it was worth every bite. For dessert, I got treated to a birthday surprise--a chocolate mousse situation with strawberries--and it was delicious. Now, the not-so-great: when the music goes up, the conversation goes down. Between that and the hum of AC/vents/whatever, it was tough to hear even sitting across the table. And this was at 10 a.m.! So if you're planning a catch-up with someone who struggles with hearing, it might not be the easiest spot. Overall, I'd go back. The food was good, the vibe has character, and even with its quirks, it feels like the kind of place you keep in your rotation.

Came here on a weekday night with the family. The food was incredible and the staff was super nice. There is no kids menu, but the kindly made a butter pasta with chicken for my son. French onion soup, salmon, pasta, chicken and lamb chops were all excellent. It is pricey, even for the South End. They also add a 3% kitchen fee. We would come here again.

Finally got a chance to venture over to Frenchie for brunch recently. The menu was full of so many must haves for us but we settled on the Lobster Benedict, Frenchie toast, Vennienostiere basket and the Assorted Fruit Cup for the baby. Pros: Frenchie toast, instagrammable atmosphere complete with neon lights, and friendly service. Cons: Lobster in the Benedict was a tad rubbery and for the cost, it was a bit disappointing. Finding parking also took as long as our whole dining experience. Pro tip: We found some parking over by Berkeley Street past the Life Alive right on top of the highway overpass. This was basically one of the only places to park that wasn't resident only.

A cute place for a brunch date! We sat in the greenhouse area which was cute, but maybe looks a little bit bigger/nicer in Instagram photos. It's still very nice and air conditioned too. I love that the eggs Benedict come in a croissant, it was delicious. I also tried the duck hash and that was tasty too. And of course, had to get their frozen espresso martini, which was perfect for a hot day.

The lamb appetizer is cooked to perfection. Ask for side of bread to soak up the delicious sauce it comes in.

Frenchie Wine Bistro is an adorable spot. We were in the back room (almost with a sunroom feel) that had the cutest view. This would be a great first date spot! The food was all really, really good. The cheese, while you don't get much of it, was so delicious. The salmon and risotto were also perfectly cooked and really flavorful. I'd highly recommend this place! It's very small, the waitstaff was very nice. We got here early so it wasn't super busy, but with so few tables I can imagine it could be hard to get in.

Frenchie Wine Bistro is an absolute gem in the heart of the South End! From the moment you walk in, the cozy yet chic ambiance draws you in. They even decorated for Halloween which contributed to the fun atmosphere. They had a great playlist going and not too loud. The staff was warm, attentive, and kind. I ordered the nutella crepe with a side of crispy bacon and red potatoes which was out of this world. The fruit on the crepe was fresh and the nutella was rich. The bacon and potatoes were perfection and well seasoned. My friend ordered the eggs benedict with a side of french fries, white toast and avocado which she said was one of the best she's ever had. My other friend ordered the traditional onion soup with a side of french fries - perfect for a fall day and great flavor! As for drinks, we ordered mimosas and raspberry bellinis, they were basic but great. I would definitely come back for another brunch outing or to even try dinner for a date night!

A beautiful French bistro with a hidden oasis is my ideal way to Brunch on a Sunday. It was really easy to reserve a reservation online for a spot with myself and two friends. The host was very friendly and offered me the option to eat outside on the patio or inside. I requested to sit inside the greenhouse garden room and they accommodated to my ask! The menu had so many options but what caught my eye was the mushroom crepe with the bechamel. Our table also ordered smoked salmon Benedict and Frenchie toast. And my latte was delicious and strong. I just loved being in the greenhouse where I felt transported out of the city. It was quite romantic and so lovely. I'd definitely recommend anyone to Frenchie for the experience! I would love to come back and try some more delicious French food paired with a glass of wine.

A local suggested Frenchie for Sunday brunch before we headed home. It's a cute place with outdoor seating and a garden room in the back. With the kitchen in the middle, it was pretty toasty there. We enjoyed the cool air in the garden room. There were maybe eight tables occupied when we arrived at 10:30am. There wasn't much energy or excitement in the place. A Mimosa was a great way to start our meal. For our meal, we started with the Traditional Onion Soup that was served nuclear hot. It was beautifully presented and yummy!. I had read the Eggs Benedict were excellent and they lived up to their reviews. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I hadn't ordered fries with it.

We booked Frenchies for thanksgiving night after seeing good reviews and that they would be open. We were seated right away with our reservation. The ambience was really cute. To start we ordered brussel sprouts and I asked if the bartender could make me a gin fizz, which they did. The brussel sprouts were very interesting with currants and black garlic aioli. The currants added a bright taste to them. For my entree I ordered steak frites with a side of truffle risotto. The steak was cooked medium as I wanted, the risotto had a nice truffle taste and the fries were crispy and delicious. For dessert we ordered a Nutella chocolate mousse. The mousse was very rich and creamy and not too overdone with the Nutella taste. My only complaint is that service was super slow. We did not really see our server much. It did get busy towards the end of our dinner but we waited awhile to get waters refilled and our dessert. I wanted another drink but we were not seen til dessert. I'm sure this is very cute during he day with the greenhouse.

The menu refers to these as "Greek cheese bread" but somehow that doesn't do it justice - these were immensely pillowy and cheesy, with an amazing crust, with homemade honey butter on the side. I could have had just these for dinner and been satisfied. They really nailed the bread. My other favorites: 1. Hipiti: spicy whipped feta with crispy potatoes on the side. I don't do well with spice but I absolutely loved this. 2. Marouli: winter lettuce with the most amazing vinaigrette dressing. My only knock to this is, presentation-wise, they serve it with half of the plate empty and the other half with salad. I don't understand why restaurants do this because - one, it only highlights the smaller portion and two, we're just going to mix the salad all around in the bowl anyway. 3. Boudeto: daily catch in a beautiful tomato broth. For a seafood dish at a restaurant in Back Bay, this was priced at a fairly reasonable $28. The only dish that fell a little flat for me was the tzatziki - needed a bit more seasoning. As it was, I was eating mostly just plain yogurt. The table-side preparation was cool, though. The space is its own visual dinner, there's simply a lot to look at (including a drawing of Poseidon riding a surf board). We got the big table in the back, which was a beautiful glass structure with a whole terrarium underneath. We couldn't stop marveling at it throughout the meal. Our waiter was wonderful - very helpful recommendations, came by to check on us often even though we were pretty far in the back, super patient with our questions. Hard to get reservations but worth it! Don't bother driving / trying to find parking unless you're willing to eat a hefty garage fee, it's Back Bay.

I've also never had anyone tell us they do not like the restaurant once they try our recommendation. It's a small, cozy, dimly lit restaurant located at a corner near MGH. People recently wondered why Boston got nearly entirely shut out by the Michelin people (only 1…read moreone-star was given); among the places that were said to be in the running was Amar, located in a lovely space in the Raffles Hotel. We have been there twice, and I now will put my brief review. The take-home: if Boston, Raffles, and Amar think they deserve a star, they really need to up their game. I will get one thing out of the way very quickly: the food is spectacular and the wine service was excellent; these are not the reason for my comment. The simple truth folks is that a dining experience is not JUST about the food. It's about ambiance--which includes service and atmosphere, and that is where Amar just falls apart. It would be wrong to not recognize that the individual servers were quite nice and attentive. We had an 830 pm seating--hardly late in most cities, though one might suggest that in Boston that is on the later side (it really isn't folks). Regardless, by 1030-11 pm, the dining room was nearly empty on a Saturday night. At that moment, a server came over to us to alert us the kitchen was closing--which was obviously them saying "get out"--but soon thereafter the smell of cleaning fluid filled the air, and we realized there was a person cleaning the tables--with a cleaning cart, complete with mops, brooms, and cleaning fluid in the middle of the dining room. While people were seated and eating. This is a restaurant with a pricey menu and wine list, and I cannot remember a time when dining in a fine restaurant when something like this EVER happened. We found it funny at first, but while trying to eat our dessert and drink our final cocktails the smell of ammonia really ruined the final experience. In the end, once served with the bill, it was not funny. The bill was around $1000 for 4 people including a nice bottle of wine. So: expensive, nice individual service, good food. But the lack of awareness about how diners paying for an expensive meal feel being rushed, and then the utterly ludicrous presence of a cleaning cart in the middle of the dining room while people were still eating (I posted a photo) makes Amar a laughable memory but nowhere I'd go back to.

No, you only gain a clear picture of what a culture is all about when things go sideways, so you can see how everyone comes together to turn things around...or not. Several months ago, I had a less-than satisfactory evening at Grill 23 that was significantly disappointing, both for myself and for several associates who I had invited to celebrate a win. There's no need to dwell on the details, as the goal here is to look through the big piece of glass (the windshield) rather than through the small one (the rearview mirror). Suffice to say that I had no intention of returning and made that clear in written communication. What happened next belongs in a Harvard Business School case study titled "Turning it Around with Excellence." Within relatively short order, I was contacted by Johan Mola, Grill 23's Assistant General Manager. What an impressive young man, one who has clearly benefited from a top-notch upbringing, high-quality professional development and wisdom that he has accumulated through his own intelligence. Johan's communication exuded sincerity and empathy. He was a great listener who never once cut me off. He singlehandedly transformed my frame of mind from one that was slammed shut, to one that was open to giving Grill 23 another chance. It happened that when he reached out, I was in Asia for a month. Over that month, Johan periodically checked in via WhatsApp, just to reassure me that he had no intention of letting the matter go. He was masterful, but it was his authenticity above all that made him so. Fast forward to last night, when I returned to Grill 23 with my wife, hopeful but still apprehensive; I needn't have been. Johan greeted us at the door, effortlessly made us feel at ease, and escorted us to our table. During the meal, he checked in several times, always in an easy, unobtrusive way that just said "I'm here for you guys, whatever it is that you may need." The waiter assigned to us (Garrett) was fantastic, we couldn't have asked for a better person to take care of us. His service was seamless without ever feeling excessive, more like a hospitable friend serving us an incredible dinner at his home. We were also visited by the Director of Operations, Gary Tummings. He made us feel valued and special, it was appreciated. All in all, this was one of the more enjoyable restaurant experiences we've ever had. Of course, the food must be mentioned, because it was flawless! We started with a dozen Cape Cod oysters, the Foie Gras and the Beet Salad, all impeccably presented and delicious. We then welcomed the restaurants two signature steaks, the Porterhouse and the Tomahawk. Both were cooked to perfection (medium rare) and the flavor of each cut was nothing short of world class. The sides (carrots, asparagus and French fries) were all excellent as well, both in preparation and presentation. For dessert we had the coconut cake, which was mouthwatering, and a portion so generous that we had enough for seconds the next day. In short, the fare that we experienced last night was on another level...we absolutely will be back soon. I want to once again thank Assistant General Manager Johan Mola for everything he did to "right the ship" and to provide us with a truly memorable evening. All's well that ends well. Finally, I want to give a shoutout to Philip, the parking valet for the restaurant. We had talked prior and following the first experience and he immediately recognized me over two months later. What sets him apart is that he obviously cares deeply about the restaurant that he works for and the patrons who dine there. A really great, genuine human...I'm grateful for his concern, and my wife appreciated him keeping her dry under an umbrella on a raw and nasty night, all the way to our vehicle! Thank you to all, DC
